Val Kilmer is so good in this....banger of a film

I love Shane Black’s odd couple buddy films. They’re some of my absolute favorites. Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys — All absolute masterpieces to me.

AnalTyrant Apr 2, 2026 +111
It still blows my mind that the same guy who made those fantastic films somehow also choked so f****** hard on The Predator (2018). It was like he forgot entirely what he was good at, and left it out of that film entirely.

TCRandom Apr 2, 2026 +27
I didn’t realize that was his. Yeah, I agree. I do love Boyd Holbrook, though. I can’t rightly explain why apart from his swagger, which is vaguely similar to say, like, maybe Sam Rockwell. I know that is a ballsy comparison to make, but it’s the best I can do right now. He just has an aura I really enjoy, I guess is what I’m trying to say.

TheTaffyMan Apr 2, 2026 +13
Boyd Holbrook is f****** incredible in Sandman season 1
13
Spagman_Aus Apr 2, 2026 +3
he sure was
3
TCRandom Apr 2, 2026 +7
Justified: City Primeval is nowhere near as good as the previous Justified seasons. However, Boyd Holbrook is a lot of fun in that show. Which is funny, because Walton Goggins is one of the reasons why the regular show was so spectacular, and his character’s name is Boyd Crowder.

DoomguyFemboi Apr 2, 2026 +5
The moment when all those coked up executives realised that I bet one of em literally exploded.
5
TheKeeperOfTheForest Apr 2, 2026 +7
I hung out with Boyd at a camp in utah for a summer back in 2009. I can say for certain he is a class act and an all around good dude. I’m a huge fan of his work because of how awesome he was to the crew that summer.
7
Sojourner_Truth Apr 2, 2026 +3
> Boyd Holbrook He was great in Logan, too.
3
Megavore97 Apr 3, 2026 +2
And the original Narcos show!
2
porkbuttstuff Apr 2, 2026 +2
Great movie
2
AnalTyrant Apr 2, 2026 +1
Oh I get that, he definitely does well with what they give him in that mess of a film. I know I've seen him in one or two other things and he delivers too. The Sam Rockwell comparison is kind of apt, hopefully he has a good long career to shine in like Rockwell has had too.
1
Fuddle Apr 2, 2026 +19
What’s crazier, he was an actor in the original Predator in 1987
19
forkoff77 Apr 2, 2026 +5
And rumor has it he punched up the dialogue for Predator (87)
5
SamKerridge Apr 2, 2026 +2
that’s the only reason he was cast in it
2
unixfool Apr 2, 2026 +2
Oh shit. The “you got time to duck?” guy!
2
KesMonkey Apr 2, 2026 +4
Nope. That's Poncho. Black plays the guy with glasses and jokes, Hawkins.
4
EunuchNinja Apr 2, 2026 +4
I wouldn’t say left it out of the film entirely. Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Jane were a great duo
4
AnalTyrant Apr 2, 2026 +3
Yeah the whole group of military rejects feels like the better part of the script, that's where I think they could have made something pretty solid if they had leaned fully into that. Some of the bits are kinda week, but there's a fair bit of fun dynamics between all those guys, that feels like where Black could shine. The weaponized autism part just feels really out of place, even at the time it seemed pretty tone deaf, and certainly doesn't age well. I wonder if there's enough on the cutting room floor that a solid editor could rework it into something cool.
3
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +3
His recent film, Play Dirty wasn't much of a back to form film either sadly. Fun but forgetable.
3
AnalTyrant Apr 2, 2026 +2
I suppose when you do enough work, not everything is going to be equally as good as everything else. It does feel like he's had more failures in the last decade than ij his earlier years, maybe he just doesn't have "it" anymore.
2
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +2
That happens when you get rich, old and comfortable..
2
Kevbot1000 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Not for Scorsese.
2
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yeah cuz he isnt comfortable yet and thats great for an artist. Also he got fame in his later life unlike Shane Black who hit it big very young with Lethal Weapon.
2
MontyAtWork Apr 2, 2026 +4
What's funny is, I actually love that movie. An early scene had a sign at a school that said "Welcome Back STD's!" And I went "Wait, STDs? Is that a joke??? Wait, is this gonna be a horror comedy Predator??" And proceeded to get *exactly* that, and laughed my ass off the whole time.
4
AnalTyrant Apr 2, 2026 +3
There's a foundation of a great Predator flick in there, but it feels like they tried to merge a second, much shittier, script into the good one and it doesn't work any where near as well. There are parts I like, but it doesn't feel like a Shane Black film to me, especially when that was supposed to be one of the big selling points of the film.
3
DetectiveCastellanos Apr 2, 2026 +2
I agree, it seems to me that everything up until the predator breaks out of the facility is fine, but the rest of the film should have been the predator trying to get to his ship to blow it up, and the protagonists trying to catch him in order to preserve the technology. The autism and the giant predator were really not needed imo
2
ours Apr 2, 2026 +2
I suspect the movie was heavily changed during production. I don't know if it was always a disaster, but there are production pictures of a predator riding an APC. Maybe there was more of his classic buddy style with predators?
2
Maximiliansrh Apr 2, 2026 +2
Weird stuff can happen with ip and studios. Wouldn’t be shocked if someone else really had control. Reminds me of Roth’s borderlands movie during covid. Was obviously just phoned in.
2
bargman Apr 2, 2026 +1
The studio must have taken a massive hand in that one.

Sartres_Roommate Apr 2, 2026 +1

yeahiateit Apr 3, 2026 +1
Play Dirty sucked too.
1
Conscious_Test_7954 Apr 2, 2026 +24
A controversial one but Iron-Man 3 is probably one of my favourite Marvel films
24
Monkeywrench08 Apr 2, 2026 +6
I kinda hate the Mandarin twist but overall it was great.
6
jeremiah256 Apr 2, 2026 +10
MCUs subsequent use of Sir Ben Kingsley has raised my opinion of the movie IMHO. Was annoyed at the twist initially, but watching it now? Love the twist.
10
Wes_Warhammer666 Apr 2, 2026 +6
Same. Trevor returning in Shang Chi was one of my favorite things about that film and I love the whole damn thing. Seriously marvel Shang Chi 2 when?
6
udat42 Apr 2, 2026 +5
He’s equally excellent in WonderMan. Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
5
Cold_Fog Apr 2, 2026 +6
WonderMan is the best thing that's come out of the MCU in a long time
6
jeremiah256 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Hear hear!
1
KaJaHa Apr 2, 2026 +4
Nah, Iron Man 3 is legitimately a great movie
4
nerdtypething Apr 2, 2026 +1
it’s also a great christmas movie.
1
dreamcast4 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Best description of im3 is its a great movie with some very bad ideas
1
lordofhousestewart Apr 2, 2026 +6
Last Boy Scout
6
Dreigatron Apr 2, 2026 +4
Don't forget *The Last Boy Scout*. He didn't direct it, but you can see his fingerprints all over it.
4
One-Feedback678 Apr 2, 2026 +3
It's my favourite trope in movies. It's always just so much fun. Get two great actors and play off their chemistry. It's a formula that works.
3
pigeonwiggle Apr 2, 2026 +3
Iron Man 3 - at least the parts with Rhodey, some of the best parts of that movie.
3
bargman Apr 2, 2026 +2
The second half of Iron Man 3 is a buddy cop movie. He also wrote Die Hard 2.5 aka The Last Boy Scout.
2
SpoonBendingChampion Apr 2, 2026 +2
No idea those were all Shane Black. Long Kiss is one of my sleeper favorites.
2
SeismicRipFart Apr 2, 2026 +1
I expected to hate Play Dirty solely because of Wahlberg. But honestly nah it had every bit of that Shane black touch you could hope for, and I ended up really enjoying it to my own surprise.
1
Blue_Eyed_Devi Apr 2, 2026 +1
Don’t he also write the Last Boy Scout?
1
mpg111 Apr 2, 2026 +45
And Michelle Monaghan is so hot in this...

We talkin’ bout Valley Kilmers right now?
6
Kalabula Apr 2, 2026 +1
I saw it once. Couldn’t really get into it. But I really like The Nice Guys. So maybe I’ll try it again.
1
krazyjakee Apr 2, 2026 +1
f*** cancer
1
ArchDucky Apr 2, 2026 +1
Val Kilmer was good in everything. Hell in Heat he had that weird look of a man that's killed too many people.
1
24framespersecond Apr 2, 2026 +309
The film that got Robert Downey Jr the Iron Man role.
309
odd42Thomas Apr 2, 2026 +131
And Shane Black the Iron Man 3 movie
131
Missile_Lawnchair Apr 2, 2026 +105
And Val Kilmer the role of Iceman in Top Gun 2. They'd have never considered him otherwise.
105
SilverMetalist Apr 2, 2026 +16
Hahaha

klsi832 Apr 2, 2026 +96
Is she a looker? Oh, man. She opens the door, she's got nothing on but the radio. Invites me to sit down, sits on my lap, fires up a spliff. Geez, really?!? No. Idiot.
96
Pharmie2013 Apr 2, 2026 +70
Still gay? Me? No. I’m knee deep in p****. I just like the name so much I can’t get rid of it.
70
graveybrains Apr 2, 2026 +11
Captain fuckin magic!
11
hhaattrriicckk Apr 2, 2026 +444
vk - "If you look up the word 'idiot' in the dictionary do you know what you find?" rdj - "a picture of me?' vk - "No, the definition of the word 'idiot', which you are"
444
Jipptomilly Apr 2, 2026 +118
You can say "f******" on the Internet.
118
hhaattrriicckk Apr 2, 2026 +39
Is there a f*** in there? I wrote that from memory and I haven't seen the movie in ages.
39
AWaffleofDivinty Apr 2, 2026 +67
There is, he says "which you f****** are"
67
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +37
Might seem silly correcting him on a random swear word in the dialogue but there is a rythm to it that wont be completed without it. The way he says "which you F****** are" makes it memorable.
37
TCRandom Apr 2, 2026 +4
I mean, you’re not wrong. But some people don’t like using that word. If they self-edited by writing f*ck but not the actual word, then I’d understand your point, ya know?
4
canadiancarlin Apr 2, 2026 +1
Not OP but I actually enjoy using the edited versions of swears sometimes. There's a comedic element, like how it's somehow funnier to hear the bleep in a movie than the uncensored version. Gives the word a further sense of being out of place and unexpected.
1
TCRandom Apr 2, 2026 +4
Yeah, that’s a fair point
4
Altersreality Apr 2, 2026 +128
Great scene, but this isn't even one of the best in the film. The corpse phone conversation has me laughing every time.
128
King_Fantastic1 Apr 2, 2026 +36
No, *my* question; *I* get to go first!
36
jayhawk_dvd Apr 2, 2026 +3
"Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on a corpse?!" To this day the only use of pluperfect I've seen in media and it's perfect.
3
Altersreality Apr 2, 2026
💀💀

babyjaceismycopilot Apr 2, 2026 +6
The pee on the body scene is my absolute favorite of any movie.
6
Traditional-Mode3425 Apr 2, 2026 +112
That whole “who taught you math?” bit is peak Shane Black: viciously funny and somehow weirdly sweet. Makes me wish RDJ and Val had done a whole buddy-cop trilogy together.
112
turkshead Apr 2, 2026 +15
TBF 17% doesn't sound like that much even you just say it like that
15
Sportsman180 Apr 2, 2026 +45
Even worse, it's a Ruger SP101 .357. Five round cylinder. 20% chance.
45
Whalesurgeon Apr 2, 2026 +4
I always thought a six-shooter had the least amount of rounds
4
PleasantThoughts Apr 2, 2026 +106
Val Kilmer in this movie is maybe the coolest guy to ever exist.
106
banjofitzgerald Apr 2, 2026 +49
In any movie this works lol. Tombstone, Top Gun, etc
49
rsqit Apr 2, 2026 +19
Willow.
19
DustFunk Apr 2, 2026 +8
Yeah he carries Willow, steals the show in Tombstone, and is an entire aura in The Saint, the perfect anti foil in Top Gun, he was one hell of a character actor.
8
Rabid_Dingo Apr 2, 2026 +2
The Saint was a great film!
2
TerminatorReborn Apr 2, 2026 +28
Doc Holiday is the coolest in any movie

Val Kilmer is maybe the coolest guy to ever exist.
11
Jet-Let4606 Apr 2, 2026 +1
On screen maybe. He was supposedly a diva in real life but mellowed out in his old age.
1
Barry_Vigoda Apr 2, 2026 +2
Bruce Willis in the Last Boyscout is the coolest personally.
2
shotgunogsy Apr 2, 2026 +52
This is why I'm not that mad about RDJ winning for Oppenheimer; he deserved something for ripping this and A Scanner Darkly off back to back.
52
AkhilArtha Apr 2, 2026 +14
How did you forget 'Tropic Thunder'?
14
shotgunogsy Apr 2, 2026 +9
Good shout. Let’s call it a holy trinity then

16
Mofolegend2 Apr 2, 2026 +71
Super under appreciated movie. RDJ and Val are so good in this
71
vincoug Apr 2, 2026 +19
This and The Nice Guys really deserved to be bigger hits.
19
Major_Ad138 Apr 2, 2026 +16
Their chemistry is off the charts.
16
Malkovtheclown Apr 2, 2026 +22
Dont think its under appreciated. It was one of the big ones that got RDJ back in the mainstream.
22
Dunkelz Apr 2, 2026 +21
It grossed $15mil worldwide. While it showed he still had talent/could still deliver, calling it "one of the big ones" just isn't true.
21
graveybrains Apr 2, 2026 +2
Is this your first experience with a cult film?
2
Dunkelz Apr 2, 2026 +10
What makes you think that? The first Iron Man came out in 2008, I don't think KKBB got to cult status to the point of elevating RDJ within 2-3 yeas.
10
Microwave1213 Apr 2, 2026 +5
RDJ spent a decade at the peak of the Hollywood A-list and yet the vast majority of people have still never even heard of this movie. It’s very clear under appreciated and I really don’t understand what’s so difficult about that concept to you
5
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +18
People on listnook love to use that word for every movie slightly outside the mainstream.
18
Thoraxe474 Apr 2, 2026 +21
Super underappreciated comment
21
NATHAN4U007 Apr 2, 2026 +14
Is it just me or does anyone else not get the hype behind this comment?

it’s definitely achieved cult status.
2
Yokai_Mob Apr 2, 2026 +13
RIP Val Kilmer. One of my favorite actors ever
13
Qyzyk Apr 2, 2026 +23
There's a moment in the blooper reel which involves this scene. It's right after RDJ hits the fake orderly in the face. The orderly curses "F***" as he holds his face and starts walking. Kilmer quickly adlibs "That's what they're gonna do to you in prison!"
23
Spagman_Aus Apr 2, 2026 +3
holy shit 😂
3
TeslaProphet Apr 2, 2026 +26
Love that movie. Had it on DVD and brought it to a Comic Convention because Val Kilmer was going to be there. I asked him to sign it, and he might have been high or drunk but he said “SURE! Right over Robert’s head!”, and proceeded to scribble over RDJ’re face. It was…….odd.
26
Yesterday_Is_Now Apr 2, 2026 -4
Maybe bitter that RDJ went on to be a blockbuster superstar and he stayed in mostly smaller productions?
-4
580_farm Apr 2, 2026 +10
Doesn't that suck? I just hit you for no reason.
10
Witty-Athlete9524 Apr 2, 2026 +24
Eight? Who taught you math! The chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer is lightning in a bottle. Shane Black’s writing at its best.
24
LyleTheAdonis Apr 2, 2026 +15
I remember watching this and being so excited for RDJ’s comeback and to see what he’d do next. Wild that it turned into the MCU.
15
thewidowgorey Apr 2, 2026 +6
I'd love to see this with an audience. This movie was so funny
6
graveybrains Apr 2, 2026 +5
"Anyway, that's ambiguous" is my favorite line in that whole damn movie 😂
5
Significant-Self5907 Apr 2, 2026 +4
One of my holiday favorites, & the cast is brilliant.
4
Safe_Competition_526 Apr 2, 2026 +5
that scene is such a classic example of black's sharp dialogue and quirky tone. it really sets the mood for the whole film.

One of the funniest scenes in the Shane Black filmography. The subversion is so so good!! It had me dying of laughter, who knew maths was that funny.
3
TravisKOP Apr 2, 2026 +3
Their chemistry is incredible in this
3
Blue_Eyed_Devi Apr 2, 2026 +3
This was when Downey couldn’t get hired, or insured, for anything because of his past legal troubles and unreliability due to drug use. Shane Black stuck his neck out for him and it paid off as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a fantastic movie. And shit worked out for Downey.
3
Mudbone71 Apr 2, 2026 +4
I was the only one in the movie theater watching this. I was crying with laughter the entire time. One of my all time favorite movies. My soon to be wife had the exact same experience. I didn't know her then, but when she told me when we met, I knew she was a keeper.

That whole setup is peak Shane Black, the fast banter makes the dumb question land way harder. Downey and Kilmer sell it because they both sound like they’re one insult away from a fight.

Love Shane Black's directing style. He excels in buddy cop type comedies like this, Nice Guys and Iron Man 3 to name a few.

Punker1234 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Completely underrated film. Kilmer is just insanely good in this movie and RDJ is just as fun to watch as well. Highly recommend a watch.

I did one of those [animated type things](https://youtu.be/d6IkAQTUCps?si=YP_EVnrOGfrhD10C) when that was trendy for this scene in Macromedia Flash. Favorite for all of my buddies. What a beautiful time.

This was a great movie but if you haven't seen it, this is like a huge amount of spoilers lol.
1
Commercial_Lobster47 Apr 2, 2026 +1
I've watched this scene probably 17 times and I only just realized Val is genuinely trying to help him - he's not being a d***, he's doing that thing where someone who's actually competent makes fun of you *while* teaching you. That's the whole movie in one exchange.
