Kremlin says it’s defending against ‘piracy’ after reports Russian frigate escorting tankers through English Channel — Novaya Gazeta Europe
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Russia had “the right … to defend its interests” against what he termed “piracy”, in response to British reports that a Russian warship had escorted sanctioned tankers through the English Channel.

Russia Why won’t you let me drag my anchors over your under sea cable lines and cause millions in Damages and claim it was a accident for the 15th time

Bruce_Sato Apr 9, 2026 +20
The Russians were attempting to or did deploy their un-crewed mini subs which can operate undetected whilst cutting lines far from the mother ship. it's a real problem.

FantasticOwl5057 Apr 9, 2026 +132
Ah yes, the notoriously pirate infested waters of the English Channel.  Russia is a cancer on the ass of the world

..japanese torpedo boats though might lurk in the Channel! :D

I mean, it's true though? [The UK navy and army can now board and attack Russian tankers in the English Channel](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/mar/25/uk-armed-forces-authorised-to-board-russia-tankers-shadow-fleet), alongside several incidents of this happening for example during Operation Southern Spear on January 7th, and [threats from the US regarding Russian tankers heading for Cuba](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/20/cuba-crisis-fuel-tankers-russia-oil-gas-energy-us-trump.html)

Sanctioned by the crown? I believe those are privateers, not pirates!

But is this operation special as well?

Extremely special, of course.

Any country's navy/coast guard can board a vessel flying a false flag. If the Russian ships were flying Russian flags instead of false-flagging their vessels as falsely belonging to other countries they wouldn't have a problem with being boarded. Russia is violating international law by intentionally flying false flags in an effort to get around sanctions.

Kolbin8tor Apr 9, 2026 +20
Those aren’t pirates, matey

ExcitingSentence8296 Apr 9, 2026 -28
We all know what the Kremlin insinuated with "piracy" and "pirates" lol, don't be naive now
-28
PatientRoutine8291 Apr 9, 2026 +14
If russia wouldnt be running fleets flying false flags and changing flags and registration while at sea (not allowed, anywhere by anyone) this wouldnt be an issue. Stop defending russian bending of words and their definitions, thats half their goal with their information wars.
14
Gigi_Langostino Apr 9, 2026 +6
Yeah, running a false flag is far closer to piracy than boarding an illegal vessel in your territorial waters.
6
ButterscotchTop194 Apr 9, 2026 +5
That's the point, Russia is talking shit again. No need to defend them.
5
Thurak0 Apr 9, 2026 +7
> However, the Telegraph noted that the Royal Navy is yet to intercept a single Russian-linked ship.
7
ExcitingSentence8296 Apr 9, 2026 -25
Doesn't mean they aren't allowed to nor that they won't use that power, which is exactly why Russia is escorting said fleet :P
-25
Gigi_Langostino Apr 9, 2026 +8
The article is talking about vessels flying a false flag. They have always been able to board those within their territorial waters. Furthermore, if the Russian Navy interferes with such operations, they will lose the presumption of innocent passage and can be excluded from the territorial waters of the UK.
8
Ferelwing Apr 9, 2026 +5
Remind me again whether or not it's "piracy" to run a false flag or to change "flags" while out in the waters? As far as I know, it's illegal to fake where you're coming from, and only "pirates" would do so. So doesn't that make the Russian's the "pirates"?
5
FantasticOwl5057 Apr 9, 2026 +5
You mean the Russian tankers flying false flags? Those Russian tankers?
5
Gigi_Langostino Apr 9, 2026 +7
The UK armed forces and law enforcement have always been able to board any vessel flying a false flag in Britain's territorial waters. Literally the only thing that's changed is Russia is running tankers under false flags.
7
Expensive_Plastic186 Apr 9, 2026 +1
As is in their own rights to do so.

Time to resurrect privateering

Give it time until Ukraine has drones in position. Now that they know where this frigate operates...

Those Russian e****** get everywhere including the White House

Possible_End_5272 Apr 9, 2026 +5
Just tail the tanker for a while, eventually the frigate will have to turn back for repairs, or to stock up on Vodka and condoms.
5
spetulia_goth Apr 9, 2026 +5
let's set the Cornish and Welsh on them, go full piracy and buccaneer. trumps fucked the new world order so let's just have fun.
5
kombiwombi Apr 10, 2026 +2
These are oil tankers. They'd sell for quite a sum if we hoisted the jolly roger on them. The sailors are underpaid, they'd probably help.
2
GabettiXCV Apr 9, 2026 +6
...So they're defending themselves against themselves?

Would just a be a shame if Ukraine happened to have some of their sea drones lurking around the English Channel.
3

Maybe they are expecting japanese torpedoboats to attack them?

Funnily enough Drake's Drum is still kept at Buckland Abbey. He promised to return and defend England if it was sounded again.

Yeah the modern English Channel is known for pirates. /s just in case, because this is Listnook after all.
1

The insinuation from the Russians is that the British state itself are the pirates.
5
km3r Apr 9, 2026 +1
Not that the UK is doing this at all, but according to the pro-Iran bots, it's totally okay if the UK extorts tolls or blocks the English channel.
