A Senator who for years had sexually molested young high school boys. 2. Newt Gingrich. He had already left his 1st wife while she was suffering from cancer for young intern. At the time of the Clinton scandal he was cheating on his 2nd wife with another twenty-something intern, having sex with her and lying to his wife and the country about it. 3. Ken Starr. He was fire from Baylor University for covering rapes and sexual assaults by student athletes. Of those 4 men, Bill, Denny, Newt, and Ken, its pretty crazy that as bad as Bill was, he probably ranked 4th in his offenses. What is even more telling is that Republicans could not find a signal moral person to go after Bill and struck out on 3 swings.

I've often wondered how many conservative men are so furiously engaged in the trans debate (which I hate to call a debate when one side is actively medically experimenting on trans prisoners, but here we are) are quite *so* furious about it because the rate of crossdressing among straight, white men is probably a lot higher than we know. The cultural experience of crossdressing, in either sexual or playacting contexts, is old and most often a male experience. If this is an "open secret" in DC...think about all the quiet secrets. So that's my new working hypothesis: Conservative men are so obsessed with trans women because they're all dressing up on the side and don't understand nuance well enough to realize neither issue is actually related. One's a gender expression. One's a kink. But, then again, the sexual appetites and depravity of conservative men all seem focused heavily on perversions of healthy things. Crossdressing where a more comfortable reckoning of what healthy masculinity looks like would probably soothe the same anxiety they're swinging at with the crossdressing. It becomes an attack on trans people because they need to draw a line *to themselves* that leaves them squarely in some narrowly defined 'male' category. As someone who worked on the Hill for a few years, of the number of "open secrets" in DC I witnessed this is really tame.

Doesn't seem like it was an open secret. We would have heard about it long before now. Sure, I believe some people may have known but "open"?? That seems like an exaggeration for clicks. Culture has a way of tightening the leash when someone steps outside its unwritten rules. The moment a person stops performing “normal”, it makes people uneasy; it exposes how much of what we do is just quiet compliance. What if, instead, people lived the life that felt true to them and THAT became the baseline? A lot of what gets labeled as “too much,” “weird,” or “inappropriate” is just someone refusing to shrink themselves to fit a script they never consciously agreed to in the first place.
