High and Low is my favorite, has some truly electric sequences

High And Low has more naturalistic acting; the samurai films have a lot of theatre conventions that look strange to western eyes.

not if you’re familiar with theater or opera?

While Ikiru is my favourite, I think general consensus will be starting with Seven Samurai, it's a great movie. I'm slowly getting though this filmography myself and I think Yojimbo fits this weeks movie challenge theme.

My only hesitation is that Seven Samurai is the peak. But if you've got one shot, it's the one to take. I started my boyfriend with it, then, hilariously, followed up with a theatrical screening of The Idiot.

Of those Seven Samurai probably. If you can find it streaming, maybe Yojimbo instead as a start because it's 1.5 hrs shorter and very accessible.

I just watched Seven Samurai on HBO two days ago. They have most of these movies ready to go.

Ran is phenomenal but pretty deep end kurosawa. But check it out eventually!

Strongly recommend this movie as it was the best movie I saw for the first time last year. Absolutely stunning to look at. But I would definitely watch some other Kurosawa movies first and then see him get in his bag for Ran.

Personally I think Hidden Fortress, especially if you are interested in how George Lucas ripped it off for Star Wars

Did not know this

I’ve gotta chime in here to clarify: “Ripped it off” is a weirdly accusatory way to describe the relationship between The Hidden Fortress and Star Wars. George Lucas was heavily inspired by Japanese Samurai films and Akira Kurosawa in general. Many elements of the plot of the original Star Wars is lifted from Hidden Fortress but it’s hardly a ‘rip-off’. George has also never been less than upfront about how big of an influence Kurosawa was on him. Anyway I would probably recommend you watch Seven Samurai first. It’s THE Kurosawa film. It’s been remade or reimagined countless times in film and television. Outside of the actual ‘remakes’, scenes and moments from the film are constantly homaged in other media. You can see the DNA of Seven Samurai in films like Ocean’s Eleven, LOTR The Two Towers, A Bug’s Life, and of course Star Wars. Just to give an example of how widely it’s referenced, if you’ve seen Mad Max Fury Road you might recall a scene where Max and the other protagonists are stuck in some thick fog and realise there’s a small band of villains almost upon them. Max heads off alone into the fog to deal with them, and the camera stays with the rest of the group as they wait anxiously. After a short while Max returns out of the fog, clearly having beaten the villains. This scene is almost a cliche in many ways, but this scene and every similar scene like it which you might have seen, is basically a direct homage to a similar scene in Seven Samurai. And that’s just one example of the kind of widespread influence the film has had.

Ikiru is my favorite, but The Seven Samurai is amazing.

Throne of Blood. It’s his version of MacBeth

As an intro? Seven Samurai.

HBO max usually has a few of his movies if you happen to have that you can avoid commercials. I really liked High and Low and it was the first one I watched … but I’m not a samurai-type movie super fan

Seven Samurai is a universal all timer. High & Low is a personal fave.

I am currently doing this with Ozu at my Temple in NYC. One film a month. We just watched Good Morning last week

Rashomon was my first. I watched it in a film narrative class in college and it blew me away. It’s a wild fever dream But Seven Samurai is the probably the better choice. Great acting, plot, action, everything.

Wrong-Nobody-1772 Mar 24, 2026 +2
my favourite is high and low, genuinely incredible

lufaneXIII Mar 23, 2026 +2
If you can, skip the list and watch Yojimbo first. If you can’t, Rashomon and Seven Samurai are my reccs

I've seen a lot of people mention yojimbo and where to watch it so i'll try to find a service to watch it

Andrroid Mar 23, 2026 +1
HBO Max or Criterion Channel

tycho_nova Mar 24, 2026 +1
HBO Max has a pretty good Kurosawa collection, including Yojimbo

babyjaceismycopilot Mar 23, 2026 +1
All of them. You're going to realize a lot of other movies are inspired by all of these movies.

Rashomon and Seven Samurai are both extremely influential movies, if you watch either of them you will suddenly recognize how insanely many other movies/shows have borrowed from them.

Watch some of his actual films first, but if you want a pretty spot on homage to Kurosawa you should watch Tornado that came out last year. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCW7OoSp0bI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCW7OoSp0bI)

Kagemusha! It's in color, brilliant bloody color. Coppola helped produce. Lots of guns and blood and kick ass samurai attitude.

maeldwyn Mar 23, 2026 +1
Of course you MUST watch Seven Samurai but Rashomon is a masterpiece of storytelling and might also be a good place to start.

High and low would be the best introduction

Seven Samurai is really good, it was my first Kurosawa. It's pretty long, but he makes good use of the time. The story feels like it has time to breathe and it really draws you in so you can feel the stakes.

Seven Samurai is his biggest crowd pleaser even though it's long. But I would start with Rashomon (his first international hit) and work your way chronologically. You can skip The Idiot and I Live in Fear if you wish, but they're all great movies. If they're not streaming, check your local library, or sign up for Criterion.

Lonnie_Shelton Mar 24, 2026 +1
Kanopy is a streaming service that is free with a library card. Recently watched Rashomon on it. I would start with Seven Samurai or Rashomon.

Lots of good advice in the comments, but my advice is just to start somewhere and be prepared to rewatch over and over again. Maybe I'm slow but I found so much more each time I watched Kurosawa movies.

Seven Samurai is the first one I watch. So I suggest that one, but I love all of his movies

Yojimbo and Sanjuro should not be slept on

Other than the ‘one scene’ in Ran, I thought it was boring as hell and it gave me migraine. That’s all I got
