Shit man, I know what you mean. Im a diver and I know a bunch of marine biologists that love the job, but I've also met a bunch of ex-marine biologists that got out of the field because they said it was too depressing.
75
FishermanWaste1268 Mar 31, 2026 +26
you actually know marine biologists with jobs. the ones i know are yoga teachers, public servants and science teachers and a long line tuna fisherman.
26
Missile_Lawnchair Mar 31, 2026 +19
Yeah well I live next to one of the most prominent marine biology institutions in the world so if you're going to meet some it's going to be here.

For scale, this tanker had 5 times the amount of fuel than the Exxon Valdez. And they blew it up...
116
PCho222 Mar 31, 2026 +13
Reading the article and looking up the ship, it appears to be just a regular container ship. Not that fuel oil leaking into the ocean is any better but I'm hopeful it isn't nearly as bad as the Valdez.
13
LobsterConsultant Mar 31, 2026 +12
I think you got your ships in the article mixed up; there's three vessels mentioned in the article. * [*Al Salmi*](https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:5629199/mmsi:447097000/imo:9534793/vessel:AL%20SALMI) (IMO 9534793) which is definitely a Kuwaiti-flagged crude oil tanker, and the one that was damaged and set afire by an Iranian attack. (Fire was extinguished, no apparent leak). * The second vessel was an unnamed Greek-owned container ship that reported being fired on. * The third vessel mentioned was a Liberian-flagged container ship [*Express Rome*](https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:755157/mmsi:636015019/imo:9484936/vessel:EXPRESS%20ROME) (IMO 9484936), which also reported being fired on.
12
TheDwarvenGuy Mar 31, 2026 +75
Reminder that oil spills also have a chance to shut down desalination plants due to contaminated intakes, Iraq tried to intentionally do it during the gulf war
75
IAmLegallyRetarded_ Mar 31, 2026 +67
Wait, isn't the Strait of Ormuz blocked anyway? Why are they loading oil tankers?
67
lastpassonright Mar 31, 2026 +83
Oil wells are not shut off since it causes issues,so the pumping continues. Considering we're a month into this, storage tanks are probably nearly full.
83
Gurrnt Mar 31, 2026 +38
It's the opposite. Minimum levels are kept at higher risk areas for safety. We start up from time to time to keep the pipes happy.

Where are all the people who were saying Iran has no more launchers and cant accurately hit anything yesterday? The cope lately has been absolutely insane. Trump isn’t taking Iran seriously, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to follow suit.
223

Yep, don’t believe in the propaganda here. It’s the same song and dance I heard when we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. New generation, same bullshit. Nothing ever changes.

Iran is the strongest enemy the US has directly fought since WW2. They are far more capable of hitting back than Vietnam was at the time of the Vietnam war or North Korea in the Korean war. The United States going to war with Iran was the last attempt at maintaining colonialist rule across the Middle East, and with the inevitable loss, US hegemony across the globe will never be the same.
6
ImjustANewSneaker Mar 31, 2026 +8
….. this isn’t true in any form or fashion. They might not even be top 3. Iran just has the ability to fight asymmetrically effectively which is fairly new. What we’re seeing is a symptom of globalism.
8
MisterTylenol Mar 31, 2026 +9
Alright, name the top 3 then.
9
ImjustANewSneaker Mar 31, 2026 -8
Iraq X2, Vietnam, Korea
-8
Background_Effort942 Mar 31, 2026 +11
Iraq stronger than Iran in 2026? Not according to the numbers and also way too early to tell how they would respond to a ground invasion. This war is not well thought through.
11
ImjustANewSneaker Mar 31, 2026 -1
Iraq developed their military more for an actual land war. Iran’s money goes mostly into asymmetrical warfare because it’s extremely effective and they don’t really have to worry about a ground invasion because it’s unlikely. If they didn’t end up being by the biggest oil choke point they would be fried.
-1
Background_Effort942 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Based on 2026 reports, Iran’s military is significantly larger and more advanced threat than Iraq’s was in 2003, with approximately 570,000 active-duty troops and 350,000 reserves, compared to Iraq's \~432,000 in 2003. A ground invasion of Iran is significantly more difficult than the 2003 Iraq invasion due to its 4x larger size, rugged mountain ranges (Zagros/Alborz), and central deserts acting as a natural fortress.
3
iPcFc Mar 31, 2026 -6
You're high as f*** if you think Iran is the strongest enemy the United States faced since World War 2. Vietnam literally killed 50k US soldiers during the Vietnam War, much higher than the Korean War. The recency bias in this comment is appalling.
-6
Skeeter_206 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Let's see what happens if the US sends 100k soldiers into Iran you f****** loony toon
1
iPcFc Mar 31, 2026
And do you have concrete proof that the US will send 100k troops to Iran or this is just your f****** idiotic imagination? Do you even understand the logistics needed to send a division to another theatre let alone five division worth? No wonder the US is going to shit, you can't even use your common f****** sense clown. Go f****** spend your time reading and studying instead of playing shooter games. This is what happens when you play shooter games and all of a sudden you think you f****** know how war operates.
0
Skeeter_206 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Are you mad that the US is losing this war or are you just an angry person in general?
2
iPcFc Mar 31, 2026
No I'm mad with stupid idiots who does not have a clue how war works because they live in their own bubble like you. You sound so f****** silly with every comments you make that you make that orange guy competent on his job if both of you stand side by side.
0
Skeeter_206 Mar 31, 2026 +2
So you're saying a ground invasion in Iran will go well? Okay, get back to me in 3 months and we'll see who's the f****** idiot
2
SnooRegrets6428 Mar 31, 2026 +13
Iran just got a fresh shipment from Russia
13
redredgreengreen1 Mar 31, 2026 +21
Is anyone actually saying that lol. We're 3 weeks, MINIMUM, before launchers get scarce. Not going to be a fun 3 weeks for oil tankers...
21
Ok-Ingenuity9499 Mar 31, 2026 +45
Shahed drones can be launched from the ground by a single operator, from the back of a pickup, a fishing boat, etc. Iran has stockpiles of drones/missiles underground as well as outside their borders that they can bring in later. They are not going to run short on launchers that just isn't the limiting factor in this conflict and in the new era of drone warfare. They've been preparing for this for a long time.
45
redredgreengreen1 Mar 31, 2026 +6
Ahh, missed this was a drone strike, thought it was missile. Yeah, drones remain a problem.
6
hoffsta Mar 31, 2026 +21
Yes. Go on Facebook and engage in a political page or two, soon your feed will be filled with right wing content, and you’ll see masses of morons in the comments sections who are absolutely convinced the US is winning the shit out of everything Iran related. Hoards of them.
21
Mr_HandSmall Mar 31, 2026 +11
Yep and in 10 or 15 years those same morons will claim they never supported the war - just like what happened with the Iraq war
11
Skeeter_206 Mar 31, 2026 +4
It's going to be 6 months to a year from now when the true impact of this loss shows it's face.
4
Careful-Calendar8922 Mar 31, 2026 +5
The pulled out of the ass “1/3rd of their launchers disabled and 1/3rd buried,” nonsense when Iran hasn’t even been using many missiles is driving me up the wall. Even if it were true, most Iranian strikes aren’t using missile launchers of any kind. It’s so obvious that they just parrot whatever was said on Fox News.
5
redredgreengreen1 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Well, to be fair, that statistic was for missiles, not launchers. Which, on the other hand, is a useless statistic since the missile count isn't important here lol.

I’m hoping one outcome is: no one over the age of 55 can hold office. Or pick a year. They don’t seem to give two shits about destroying the world for the rest of us. Make them accountable to their mistakes.
5
joshrealer Mar 31, 2026 -5
I don’t care for this cope. The reason politics is favourable to old people is because young people don’t vote and old people vote religiously. And most young males supported Trump anyway over Harris. If you want politics to be favourable to you, go out and vote. Democracy is a responsibility more than a privilege.
-5
Northern_Grouse Mar 31, 2026 +5
I want the decisions made by my leadership, to affect my leadership. Nowhere in my statement did I say “ I want my leadership to do things favorable to me”. I want accountability. I want consequences for poor choices.

Iran held hostage for four hundred and forty something days, and the day Regan was sworn into office they were freed. They tanked Carter's presidency surgically, and they're going to hold out on this *at least* until the midterms.  What remains to be seen is (a) whether they will make it so painful for Trump that they end up extracting major concessions, and (b) whether they're willing to drag it out until November 2028 just to punish Republicans further and ensure they don't win the presidency again.  Perhaps one of the most interesting things about the situation is that Russia supports Iran, but Russia and Iran want different regimes in the US. At any rate, I personally welcome Iran's attempt at US regime change. At least in this case they're trying to get rid of our worst. Can't say we did the same for them when we meddled in their politics.
6
Equivalent-Eye-2782 Mar 31, 2026 +1
I said because of the environmental impact
1
Kagenlim Mar 31, 2026 -6
A regime change in the US would plunge the world into a full blown ww3. We are talking about at least a billion if not more deaths A regime change in Iran on the other hand would stabilise the region as Hamas and Hezbollah loses their main benefactor and even now, Hamas is threatening to disavow Iran because of their actions rn (yes I know I don't believe it too)
-6
TrontRaznik Mar 31, 2026 +4
It's funny you say that when the US is currently the most destabilizing force in the world and especially the Middle East.  Nevertheless, you misunderstand what "regime change" means. Regime change can come about through manipulation of the democratic process, it doesn't have to be a forceful overthrow. While the phrase often has violent connotations, it doesn't always, and I meant it in the way I described.
4
Kagenlim Mar 31, 2026 -10
Destabilising? The US is the reason why there's no war in south east Asia as a revanchist china is trying to size territory in the SCS and more. It should be noted that stabilising is exactly what this op is too, Iran has conducted both a cold and hot war against the entire gulf region which is why gulf countries pressured the US to strike to begin with And that's still bad? Why are you trying to defend an unfair electrical rigging?
-10
TrontRaznik Mar 31, 2026 +8
This is laughable propaganda. We are now in a war that is escalating rapidly and threatening a world recession because Trump was manipulated by Netanyahu and a cadre of idiot advisors. There is no win condition, the Iranian regime will continue as a Hydra with new heads, and they will do everything they can now to actually get a nuclear weapon, and not Israel's bullshit 30 years of being one month away from a nuclear weapon.  The repercussions of this will be felt for decades if not centuries, and it will almost certainly inspire terrorist attacks in the US and EU.  If anything good comes of this, it will be the blowback on Trump. And you, propagandist, if you are merely a useful idiot, remember that when you read the news of a terrorist attack on US soil, and remember that you supported it. And at that time, be sure too to notice that Trump's war accomplished nothing but needless American bloodshed.
8
Kagenlim Mar 31, 2026 -3
How is it propaganda? China is constantly encroaching on SEA territory and the US is what ASEAN chose to counter their military in the SCS. Also low-key, you sound like a conspiracy theoriest lmao, nothing you said make sense If those terror attacks do happen, it'll only force Europe to enter the war, which is exactly opposite to what Iran wants And if you are not a propagandist, remember, pax Americana is why the world is at peace for this long. Without it, be ready to die in a trench because that's what'll happen
-3

Looks like we all need need to buy another paper straw to offset the environment degradation from this!
16
the-es Mar 31, 2026 +7
Every time there's some meaningful environmental discussion someone has to cry about "mah straws".  Maybe we can drink beverages from the cup like a big boy and just skip straws altogether?
7
Laractinium Mar 31, 2026 +8
As someone who hasn't used a straw since the 1990s: The straw comments are good, as they are constant reminders how the average human gets blamed for everything, while rich people do whatever they want. And it shows that whatever a single human does FOR the environment, no one can compensate in their lifetime, what those rich assholes cause every single day.
8
ZuAusHierDa Mar 31, 2026 +3
The former Green vice chancellor of Germany once said it perfectly: this is the privatisation of politics. To have really impactful change politics has to change the systemic problems instead of saying your private lifestyle is the problem.
3
the-es Mar 31, 2026 -1
Blaming everything on someone else isn't going to work. I mean fine let's create more plastic waste or not recycle, that'll show billionaires I guess. Solid logic.
-1
Laractinium Mar 31, 2026 +1
If anyone would be serious about plastic waste, if we take that as an example, there would be laws about packaging (sorry, if that word is not the correct one). Like take coke bottles, they are thick plastic, around double the plastic of any other plastic bottles and they are produced in billion quantities ever day. Forcing that company to make their bottles thinner would already prevent more plastic waste than pretty much anything else without inflicting anyones life. Or take those 1cm content in 20cm big plastic packaging.. also would prevent so many tons of waste every day if companies would be forced to use reasonable size packaging. Next amazon with their big boxes for tiniest stuff. And the list could go on endlessly. But yet people get told it's their straws that cause so much waste and problems - and the average human gets more ridiculous laws that have an 0.000000000whatever influx on the environment, whatever prevents to finally fight the reason for all that waste. And if you still blame it on the average human, well... have fun being angry at people instead of the ones who cause all that. Btw. where I live, plastic gets either recycled (what is possible) and the rest get's burned and turned into energy. Normal waste also get's turned into energy, bio waste (or kitchen waste or whatever it is called) get's turned into fertilizer/humus. And so on, so everything that makes sense is already done here and the straw banning is f****** useless.
1
the-es Mar 31, 2026 +1
You raise great examples and I agree that regulators should be more strict with environmental regulations. The trouble is, you need the public to demand regulations. Instead, you have people hyperventilating about straws 🤣.  I'm all for tackling inequality and yes I think a lot of the billionaires are a net negative on society BUT people love to rationalize their own shitty behavior. It's not my fault my drive an inefficient car, eat meat, drink coffee, etc ... the billionaires made me do it. Personal responsibility is a thing.
1
Laractinium Mar 31, 2026 +1
You're right that a lot of people use the straw example as kind of an excuse to do nothing at all. It's a bit hard to distinct those people from others who do everything in their power to leave an as small as possible impact on environment, but then get told the straws are the problem. Of course you lose people fighting FOR environment, if you restrict them more and more, while you don't demand producers to change things. I mean for example that we can't "tell" producers of stuff, that we want less plastic, if all the options and all the other products are the same amount of waste material and the same kind of packaging. Give me something in a recycable container and one in a not recycable one and I choose the better option. And I'm so sure many people would do the same. About responsibility, yeah it's absolutely a thing and everyone should try to minimize the impact. Most people just feel completely helpless and cheated, if they worsen their quality of life for tiniest impact, while they read that Taylor Swift takes a plane to cross the street (exaggerated, ofc). Or when they read that hundreds of politicians used private jets to meet at an environment related meeting instead of using video calls or whatever.
1

People with disabilities or mobility issues need straws, and non-plastic straws have their problems too, like paper is a choking hazard.
