Can confirm. I worked in a real estate office starting Jan 2020 through early 2021. Real estate isn’t far off from landlords…they were awful to be around in the early days of Covid.

Can confirm! Worked for a company that owned many large apartment complexes. The place was a case study in cronyism and failing up.

Low T comment: this joke never lands. It’s devastating to the opponent and true but is more commonly repeated toward people either sympathetic to or vulnerable to the joke’s hurtful language.

Maybe, but a lot of Covid deniers are victims of misinformation and poor education on the subject. Yeah, that ‘choice’ does damage to the people around them too, but I would still say they’re a bit more sympathetic than landlords. Landlords know for sure what the f*** they’re doing.

At the same time that trump and his goons are trying to say the southern poverty law center funded all hate groups and racism among the right doesn't actually exist, along with the voting rights act they just destroyed was actually Jim Crow laws and how because conservatives love Clarence Thomas and wish every judge acted like him they are the least racist!

Spythe May 4, 2026 +7
It's because being an honest landlord just doesn't work anymore So it's either greedy pos or corporations I'm renting out my pervious home and with a recent repair i basically broke even the past 4 years I charged 1250 4 years ago and now it's 1400 for a 3/2 single home 1800 sq ft in basically houston Between insurance, property taxes and tenants... shit is pointless

It’s the problem with literally everything. ETA maybe not literally everything but close enough
1
Spythe 5 days ago +2
Yeah pretty much, anything that cost taxes or insurance is a losing game at this point. I broke even WITHOUT a mortgage since its an older paid off home. Pretty sure I actually lost money if I do the full math on every single thing. Just hoping to recoup once we are able to sell it All these industry that require insurance are basically done for normal Americans. It cost way too much, no business actually wants to pay and you're one big repair from losing an entire month of work or going under
2
cracquelature May 4, 2026 +2
I mean, there are plenty, but I just can’t think about them right now at this crucial moment when landlords are teatless in Washington
2

If they're in such dire straits they can sell a few properties. What they didn't get in rent they more than received in property value increases.

These landlords probably jacked up rent enough in the past few years to more than cover those losses. Sounds like they’re crying over an unexpected event that hurt their profits, every other business has to deal with that possibility.
1251
the_Q_spice May 3, 2026 +582
They also likely got significant PPP loans they never repaid. Remember that whole debacle?
582
Krewtan May 3, 2026 +143
Sure that has nothing to do with inflation. F****** podcasters got PPP loans. Basically any business owner got untold millions from the government regardless of how covid affected their business.
143
the_Q_spice May 4, 2026 +41
Has everything to do with inflation. Artificially pumped up the economy by basically subsidizing worker salaries, allowing companies to take massive profits. It’s honestly the main reason Amazon’s delivery model took off, because FedEx dropped them as a delivery contract just prior. Amazon is basically treading water now as far as their delivery fulfillment goes (going to get a \*lot\* worse come September when their volume increases by 50-70% because of both USPS and UPS not delivering their orders anymore BTW). Landlords also claimed a ton of contractors as their “employees”. Basically everyone got a taste of a 20-40% profit margin, and decided \*we want that \*\*always\*\*\*. So as that money disappeared, they kept increasing prices to maintain those \*inflated\* margins. It’s \*literal\* textbook inflation. It’s why Powell or the Fed hasn’t cut rates. Because they have to maintain a slightly higher rate of inflation to prevent hyperinflation or worse: deflation.
41
texash0ldem May 4, 2026 +6
Why is deflation worse?
6
Thisisntalderaan May 4, 2026 +16
It means it's profitable to sit on money and not use it anywhere in the economy.
16
EntrepreneurKooky783 May 4, 2026 -1
If you define profit as more income, sure, but that's a loaded definition. But if you see profit as the utility gained from putting that money to use, a very different picture emerges.
-1
LooseSeal88 May 3, 2026 +66
As somebody who worked in bank fraud at the time, I can tell you countless people who didn't even have a business got them. They just said they had a business and got a loan. Some didn't been have an excuse. Others were like "Oh, I'm opening a barbershop" or what have you and it's like...okay, these aren't business start-up loans. These are loans to pay your existing employees during essential work shutdown...and you have no employees. You don't even have a building from which you operate.
66
Eligius_MS May 4, 2026 +7
Shit was crazy and small businesses that actually needed the help tended to get little to nothing. My business' PPP loan wasn't even enough to cover one payroll for my dozen employees. And I only got that when they expanded the program because the first batch of funding was gone before the bank looked at my application the first day funding was available. Meanwhile large companies were applying for loans for each location they had separately and getting approved because they were large companies and seen as less of a risk ***for a loan guaranteed by the govt.***

Its akin to double dipping. Rent has trippled since 2016 in almost every city across america. They definitely got their money back. And almost everyone I knew still paid rent because every state provided unemployment. Everyone knew if they didnt pay mortgage/rent that they were expected to backpay at a later date so they kept paying with unemployment. We're putting tax money to everything except benefiting people under 55.
71
SowingSalt May 4, 2026 +6
I blame high rent on NIMBYs, landlords wouldn't have the excuse if there were more homes.
6
Low_Pickle_112 May 3, 2026 +118
These are the same people who always say they deserve more of the working class's money because they "took a risk". But when risk shows up, they come crying and bawling for a handout from the government, with the working class's tax dollars. Parasitic and hypocritical.
118
FuggyGlasses May 4, 2026 +18
They also benefited from $46.5 billion in federal emergency rental assistance, which the Eviction Lab at Princeton University found in April was largely targeted to areas where landlords filed the most evictions before the pandemic. They benefit through and through.  And I'm pretty sure whoever on the suit will show up in the loan forgiveness program
18

Landlords choose to make a living on other people's lives but expect to be protected from the cost of life happening. Just total spoiled brat mindset.

Please my landlord in 2020 was still increasing rent *during* covid, she wasn’t about to let a little global pandemic stop her from getting that bag. I guess she figured since I was frontline healthcare that I was still getting paid so why not?

Dude owns 240 units. F*** that guy. These types of people own huge amounts of property and (I would argue illegally) collude with other mega landlords/companies to raise prices through algorithmic rent pricing software. Their entire business model is taking advantage of people and making life worse for them.

These parasitic assholes don’t deserve shit.  They didn’t lose work, they just didn’t earn as much income on their investment, but jacked prices up in Covid’s wake.  Debt is outstripping GDP with no end of inflation in sight and they are a huge part of the problem why people can’t afford housing.   F*** these vultures and ticks.

You occasionally watch movies, or play video games, or read books, where there's some disaster and yet there's that one guy who is still worried about money, who is still trying to get a little more green even as aliens are invading or whatever. And you think, how unrealistic, how stupid to include such a character simply for the sake of drama or advancing the plot. Covid killed millions of people, it was the disaster. And parasites like this, all they could think about was making it worse for their own gain. They wanted to evict people on to the streets during a global disaster. These are not reasonable people, not in good times nor bad, and it is high time civilization has a long and hard discussion about the institution of landlording. We've got a landlord as president right now, and how's that working out? They're not going to get any better.
19
Rev-Dr-Slimeass May 3, 2026 +43
Most governments exist to provide services for people. You work, pay taxes, and generate revenue. In return, the government protects you. The US government is a machine designed to extract wealth and give it to those who are already wealthy. I generally think people who are proud to be Americans are stupid.
43
acuet May 3, 2026 +13
Umm…..there were tax relief programs and PPP loans for ‘Business Owners’ such as this. A study was finally completed, because we didn’t have a situation like this big in some time, that in 2023 setup a Federal Insurance program for those owners. What more do they need at this point given most of those people will get money meanwhile renters and home owners that also took losses will not.
13
Better-Context2246 May 3, 2026 +6
So should every business that suffered losses during Covid sue the government? What about small business owners that were affected by decreased traffic. Should we do an investigation and verify how much actual traffic came in any business? This is a ridiculous lawsuit.

Another taxpayer giveaway. The biggest winners are going to be corporate landlords like his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. There’s a strong force majour argument for renters, and the US is presumed immune especially when it evokes emergency powers. And yet, here’s Trump negotiating a windfall using our treasury.

Liberal Democrat here I run a low cost rental apartment complex. I charge still today 650.00 for a one bedroom unit I pay for water power and internet access I have mostly older (plus 65) men most are tradesmen living on minimum wage social security. I had one younger guy that did not pay a single penny of rent for a year while living there ( rent free). He moved in while awaiting a large workers compensation settlement. He received it three months before the no eviction order was ended. He received $300k. He owed me $8,000.00 as soon as that check hit his bank account he spent $100K on a class c motor home. Now. To run an apartment I have bills I have to cover I still worked through the pandemic. If I didn’t I would not have been able to cover my payments. He scammed me as well as work comp because of government actions at the least the government can do is repay me. Not all landlords are scum bags most of the scumbags are commercial real estate owners

greystripes9 6 days ago +2
That’s what I have heard during that time. A pretty successful realtor said he wished he had not owned any rentals at all. He could not even ask them to pay the rent because it would be harassment or get the tenants to apply for rent help because that was also considered harassment. The people who scammed were the educated types who knew how to game the system.

Capitalize the gains, socialize the losses. It’s neither capitalism nor socialism, but some twisted combo that only benefits the rich.

I am not sure why so much hate. My husband is a landlord, we had a small building in manhattan 5 stories commercial, had mortgage on it, so once covid came all the tenants stopped paying any rent, they stayed in business partially( took advance of the situation )for almost 2 years no rent but mortgage, taxes all other bills never stopped so my husband could not afford that building anymore and bank took it(we had this building for 20 years). A lot of small landlords lost everything during covid ( a lot of people did) !
