I can only remember one other scene from Roseanne. This one really landed.
The other was when one of the guys is describing rolling sticks of butter in sugar and eating it by hand. Called it "shame sticks." Absolutely wrecked kid me and became a core memory somehow.

I hate to break it to you - but "shame sticks" is from According to Jim.
Because I also remember that and always thought they were missing out on adding cinnamon to the sugar.

Holy shit, you're right! It was the neighbor dude!
A joke by Mitch Hurwitz on Dan Harmon's podcast has popped in my head and now I'm sharing:
"Can you do a Jim Belushi impression, Mitch?"
"No, but I can do a bad *John* Belushi impression. So, yes."

I agree! It was family bonding time but every other family was watching the same thing you were so we all had something in common. I remember we would watch tv shows and it was the main topic of conversation the next day at work.

Weirdly enough, this was a precursor to the current disconnected, but meme-ified culture we have today. Those shared moments nationwide were basically all of us experiencing memes in the purest sense. Now everything is so fractured and insulated. I often wonder about my kid's future through this lense... Connecting and bonding with people over shows/music/games/movies was a major part of how I made friends throughout my adolescence, and I'm not sure if he'll have that in the same way, but maybe we really just connected over shared interests, sense of humor, perspective, etc... and everything else just followed naturally because there were only a few dozen channels.

This was honestly a comedically brilliant scene. Also, the fact it involved only one actor on camera just impresses me so much more. She does deserve massive credit, too, though. This scene is a good case for "laugh tracks".
(Yes, I know it's a studio audience. Laugh tracks basically don't exist anymore.)
If this scene was done in dead silence, it just wouldn't have been funny. Hearing the audience react as she escalates the conversation elevates the joke. Having the pauses between the declarations lets the joke breathe and it's filled in with laughter and then the payoff hits.
You *could* do this scene without the laughter, but it would have to be written and timed and paced differently, and it probably wouldn't have been so funny. That's why those dumb "look how awful this show is when you cut out the laugh track" clips are stupid; of course not, the jokes and the acting is playing to a live audience and you can't just take that out and expect it to work.
(Archie Bunker meeting Sammy Davis Jr. in All In The Family is another good example of the audience's laughter enhancing the joke.)
Any time some dipshit listnookor talks about "I don't need a bunch of braying idiots to tell me when to laugh" I just think about how wrong and joyless they are. And how they apparently hate stand-up comedians.
38
The_Game_Needed_MeApr 18, 2026
+7
That's really well said. It's just a different medium than the way comedy without a live audience is. Like how theatre/film adaptations of the same material are very different in their timing and presentation.
7
BaelornApr 18, 2026
+5
Listnook only complains about laugh tracks in shows they don’t like. Shows like IT Crowd get a pass on here because it’s a very “Listnook” show.

JaccountApr 18, 2026

Eh, I think it's more that there's also bad example of using laugh tracks, such as overuse or using them to prop up weaker material.

Had no clue he had anything to do with Roseanne. After watching this, he’s all over this.

Laurie can deliver lines/scenes unlike anyone else! My favorite Roseanne moments always involved her!
•this “dad’s dead” scene
•leaving her abusive boyfriend Fisher
•hiding in the tub when they all got high and asking “IS THIS THE SINK? AM I SHRINKING?!”
•her drunk and falling down “boy there’s all kinds of gravity in here”
•even in the worst season when they won the l****** and she bows to the prince like he’s going to knight her or something 😂
I still quote her from Big Bang Theory as Sheldon’s mom “I’m sorry. Did I start that sentence with ‘if it pleases your royal highness’?”

This and gravity pockets.

Laurie Metcalf absolutely earned that Emmy. The way she delivered “Dad’s dead” felt so raw and real—it didn’t feel scripted at all. That kind of performance sticks with you.

Man, I miss the old Roseanne show. So much better before she went off the deep end, then they rebooted with that soulless monstrosity.

Then you obviously have never dealt with a death in your family - particularly one of someone you were incredibly close to. The deeper the grief goes the more absurd the stuff around you becomes. You reach a point where you break out laughing or you break down completely.

“You didn’t find this funny so I will make a completely absurd assumption about your life”
