Not to mention the many showrunners that came and left. I think that's the main reason OC was canceled. No one wanted to stick with it. The writing was on the wall. The show had a strong fan base. NBC was probably tired of trying to find someone to stay with the show and have a vision of where it should go next.

I think that, with the binging model, they think people want seasons they can go through quickly and feel satisfied. They're afraid of viewers dropping off. Besides, for the price of 24 episodes, they can have 3 shows with 8 episodes. That's triple the value! (no, it's not that 1:1 in cost, but still). I interviewed for the last season of The Goldbergs, and my jaw dropped when they told me the schedule.

It makes sense to adapt to the binging model, but it's weird that they don't realize that the binging makes you forget faster. I remember better a TV show that I watched in 24 weeks than one that I watched 8 episodes of in one week. I would expect that the fix would be to create TV shows that are made to be released in 8 episodes burst (the same way a lot of 24 episodes season were kinda 12+12 for a mid season break) but not to have to wait a full calendar year for the next episode either.

To be fair, the Browns won an NFL championship like two years before the Super Bowl became a thing and four years before the Jets won it. Neither has won anything of note since. The Jets having a Super Bowl title and the Browns not is partially a result of the Jets peaking 58 years ago and the Browns peaking 62 years ago. Hardly bragging rights.

I’ve thought about this when I see clips from new shows. It was a big deal when Cragen was on the scene of a case. That always meant that things were really tense, or really political and they needed the captain on the scene to run interference. Now Olivia is just on the scene at almost every case.

Her character is too attached to her work and svu has been understaffed and underfunded since season 1. Thats my take on it, but yeah he charwcter does some silly stuff that i wouldnt expect a captain at her age to do (like running after, tackling and arresting people).

To be fair this season has had a fair amount of character development for the main cast, with the overarching storyline obviously about police corruption and the chief of police wanting to coverup some crime and wanting to get rid of Benson because Benson bad despite the fact that she's canonically been involved with the NYPD for almost 30 years. At least we get 20 episodes a season.

It always becomes self aggrandizing hot air filler with kidnappings and near deaths for the main cast every other week. No I don't care if his wife might really leave him this time. I want to GET BACK TO THE MURDER!

If it's going to be about a detective, they need to be interesting. And since there's no way of knowing ahead of time what's going to instantly strike millions of viewers as interesting, better go ahead and make them eccentric. But then we need to pair them with a normal sidekick. You know what? The normal one can maybe be a cop, the eccentric one better just be a "police consultant." Coming this fall (and *every* fall) on NBC (and *every* network).

That applies to any kind of short story drama. I gave up on ER back in the day when the time dedicated to relationships felt about twice as long as the time dedicated to patients. Season 7 or 8. But I guess the former is easier to write and make than the latter.

Stabler's family was already several levels of messy back in SVU. They took it to 11 in Organized Crime. Everyone is crazy, an a******, or a combo. Also, the first season had some supervillain shit.

And what was crazy was that during the 2nd season, they serialized it *with* Law & Order SVU, so you had watch both episodes back-to-back each week to get the story. Something like 45 episodes spread over a season. It killed SVU for me, I didn't have a desire to watch until a couple of year later where someone told they switched back to the "one and done" format because people hated the serialization.

Same thing happened to me, and I came back to SVU this season to see the cast being completely shaken up (although the new Dectives are not _bad_, and they did realize that the shakeup was awful and brought back Giddish midway through the season).

On the most recent season, i think it was, the season aired exclusively on Peacock, but had crossovers with SVU and I think L&O classic as well, and them *did* get to air on NBC eventually, but I think during the *next* season of SVU or something crazy like that. It's like they wanted to punish people for trying to watch the shows together, while also making certain plot points make no sense at all if you *didn't.* The people in charge of Peacock and Paramount+ act like they *just* found out what streaming services are.

There was an L&O crossover with SVU this year, and the had the courtesy to put a the top "This is part 1 of a 2-part" explaining you'll need to see the other show. What SVU did this year was have two endings for the premiere episode. One was standalone for Peacock, the other one lead into the premiere the of Organized Crime on linear, which was repurposing episodes that already streamed. It was odd because it messed with the timeline as to when the shows took place.

A few different overlapping cases usually. The main mob boss in Season 1 got all of his mob related charges dropped, but had a human trafficking one lingering that the SVU squad worked on. There was another situation where there was over lap with an elaborate street drug operation... stuff like that.

It was good in some ways. I really like watching Elliot do undercover work, but the writing was all over the place. One season they outed Elliot as an undercover cop on TV, the next season he was right back in it as if it never happened.  And they keep trying to ship Elliot and Benson. I mean, they're supposed to be a sibling like relationship, stop forcing it man

Ya it's definitely narrative driven but it's also just very over the top drama. I find it more akin to a comedy than an actual "drama" with how over the top the characters are. It's like they are all trying to match Stabler's attitude but when everyone is trying to match that same manic energy you end up with a weird cast of characters. I"d argue the villains were borderline cartoony in their portrayal especially with the whole series starting off with his wife being murdered via an explosive that was met for him but then there is some weird dark past about her that he didn't know about if I am recalling it correctly, just made the whole series feel campy.

The first season, even into season 2 was fairly stand alone in the L&O world and was pretty good, then it started crossing over with svu a bunch and regular L&O sometimes, I couldn't keep up anymore by season 3.

It's basically about Stabler being the cop on the edge/plays by his own rules/working with a death wish super cop that leads of team of young, diverse, plucky, good looking millennials. Complete with the IT chick that is s***/goth and the wild and crazy "from the streetzzz" latino who also plays by his own rules. They work to take down the season bad guy. Theres a new bad guy every season. Its really shitty acted and written and overall just a lame cash grab at trying to get as much out of the "Stabler" character before Meloni got too old. It was also a reason for them to try and tease the whole "Benson and Stabler" love plot that somehow got shoehorned into the series after the fact that Stablers wife was killed by a mob kingpin that opened up his life for Benson to swoop in and act like they were always in love. It really is a shame how badly written these shows got; for a while Law and Order/SVU was some top tier TV.

the director commentary on the dvds says Meloni would do nudity in scenes that didnxt call for it in the script, like everyone would set up the shots and everything and then he'd just drop trou and hang dong during like a conversation about Beecher's kids or something, and everyone just kind of went with it.

It's absolutely riveting. I've watched it twice all the way through, and the first time was like 10 years ago. Just understand its age, but also understand it did a lot of shit before anyone else on TV. It's crazy, fun, and as /u/thatisnotmyknob said, 'shakesperian gay prison soap-opera' is pretty apt.

Really disappointed with this, the constant show runner changes didn't help, but there was a great show here with bags of potential. Great to have Stabler back and both Bell and Jet were great additions to the franchise.

It is a good concept for a show, and when it worked, it was very good... but there are only so many times you can have Stabler go undercover before it starts to get pretty silly. Also the show kinda jumped the shark a little bit when the otherwise pretty grounded season 1 villain has a literal super villain plot to close out his story. Kind of a jump the shark moment TBH. I did like the Albanian and Dirty cop stories, but the later stuff just felt like repeating beats and spinning wheels.

SVU has a special place on my TV set. Nothing on? SVU goes on and boom! there goes 3 hours easy! That Liv Benson is a legend! I kind of half enjoy the format of the show no matter how dumb it can be. Something tragic happens, SVU go on the hunt usually involving a big name TV or film start (or ones you didn't know before they were famous). In between accusing literally every person they get near, and the odd witty pun, there's a short bit of time to debate the social dilemma of the current crime with the team (the 'I can't believe yada yada' moment, thus spelling it out to the audience). She looks it, and she acts like a badass.

Well the original was off the air for a good 12 years Criminal Intent ended in 2011 (although does have a canadian adaption going on) Trial by Fire, LA, True Crime, UK, all cancelled after 1 season 2 more shows either scrapped or stuck in development hell (Hate Crime and For The Defense)

I was surprised when I was watching the last season on Peacock and someone dropped the F-bomb. Then a few more cuss words and someone with their head blown off. I had no idea it had moved networks. The show seemed grittier and more realistic at that point (well, as realistic as a cop TV show can get.)

I'm in no way surprised by the news, merely in how long it has taken to officially confirm it. They cut the episode count for season 5 and stuck it on Peacock, Ainsley Seiger bowed out partway in, Meloni took on another TV gig last year so it seemed he was sure it was done. This show never seemed to know what it was trying to be, they went through about half a dozen showrunners and it seems every one had their own vision for it, so tone would shift wildly. Characters would come and go, plots would fizzle out. Sometimes it seemed they were working towards finally getting Liv and Elliot together, then they'd barely be on speaking terms next time they crossed paths. When it was good, it was good, but it was a mess.

When the show was announced, I never dreamed that it would turn into an undercover show. I *liked* the show, but half of the appeal was seeing Stabler return… and 70% of the time he wasn’t getting to be Stabler.

One of the Season 2 villains holds the city hostage by taking control of the power grid and as part of his demands makes Stabler confess on camera to the assembled media about all the people he has killed in the line of duty. How the f*** he kept getting undercover after that was baffling.

I actually loved the direction S5 took. It was like an R-Rated Law & Order series and had 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos so it looked and sounded incredible. Kind of a shame for them to pull the plug on this to go back to the PG-13 1080p SVU.

Unfortunate but not surprised. It was not a crime of the week show and that really hurt the linear following but that’s what made it a great show. Seasons 1&2 especially were a wonderfully rejuvenated, high energy take on Law & Order. Ilene Chaiken. the show runner at the time got it right and Meloni still has the juice as Stabler.

I still follow Med and Fire, but it feels like more than anything constant NBC budget cuts are what’s damaging the shows. It’s hard to write coherent, interesting stories when you have to ALWAYS be writing in reasons for half of the cast to not be on the show and only ever have access to a random assortment of characters.
