Nothing new. These two countries should be put on a blacklist.

Yeah only thing surprising about this story is the use of the word "secret"
149
Optimoprimo Mar 31, 2026 +16
Yeah I was gonna say. Not so secret.
16
scorpyo72 Mar 31, 2026 +18
Open secret - like Kristi and Cory, and Tulsi being a Russian asset.
18
Slimmanoman Mar 31, 2026 +22
But integrate them again if they oust their pro Russia government? And what happens if France or Germany elects a right wing/pro Russia government ? It'd be better to have a eu that works without having to change members every national election

Wonderful-Humor6102 Mar 31, 2026 +3
EU countries should work on temp ban of their citizens crossing borders until they are aligned on their agenda
3
-Ny- Mar 31, 2026
They pretty much have been.

FauxBroJoe Mar 31, 2026 +127
Secret? It couldn't have been more obvious unless Orban and Fico literally tattooed "Kremlin back channel" on their foreheads.

swimmityswim Mar 31, 2026 +24
Sounds more like a tramp stamp idea

Put it on the ballot, make it clear, vote in Orban be expelled from EU/NATO
158
asdhjasdhlkjashdhgf Mar 31, 2026 +50
no, expel russian tankies from EU and NATO, which implicit means expelling tanky Orbán.

ianjm Mar 31, 2026 +4
Very interested to see how this plays in Hungary. I am sure Orban's base probably thinks it's a good thing, but it might push a few undecideds away from Fidez, who knows.
4
SparksMKII Mar 31, 2026 +55
This is probably public secret #1 in the EU that everyone already knew
55
Heizard Mar 31, 2026 +44
That could be said about all right wingers in Europe. I'm yet to meet IRL that is opposed to Russia, they all sympathetic as minimum and mostly because they share homophobic and racist views.

Moderate-Extremism Mar 31, 2026 +12
They need the Kremlin funding, there was a solid decade where Putin was keeping those parties alive, then 2016 happened and it was like he was pushing on an opening door, with billionaires funding the far right with open checkbooks.
12
UnResponsible_Ice Apr 1, 2026 -5
This is not true at all. Anyone who thinks and talks like this is further promoting the bipartition of people and therefore promoting the desires of Kremlin. You must not have met a lot of people IRL ig.

Epic_Baldwin Apr 1, 2026 +8
Fidesz, Hungary. Smer, Slovakia. Front National, France. Vox, Spain. PVV, Netherlands. Vlaams Belang, Belgium. AFD, Germany. They all have Russian ties. Pls add parties I don't know/forgot about.

Reform, UK. Their former head of Reform Wales, [Nathan Gill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Gill) is currently doing time for taking Russian bribes.

smsmkiwi Mar 31, 2026 +108
Expel them from the EU.

W31337 Mar 31, 2026 +48
This. Should be strict rules about back channels.

pittaxx Apr 1, 2026 +3
Putin would love seeing EU being disassembled and being able to take full control of countries in the middle of Europe. Hungary and Slovakia are nuisances, but they aren't doing any real damage in the big picture of things, and having them as members is still a net benefit for the EU. You just have to keep in mind that you shouldn't share sensitive things with them. And remember that their opinions are bought.
3
VegasKL Mar 31, 2026 +5
You'd think they'd have a probation ability to suspend their voting or certain trade agreements or intelligence sharing (if they do that). But I guess the EU position is to try to maintain the status quo as to not alienate and further push them into Russia's bosom.
5
NCC_1701E Mar 31, 2026 +6
Not everyone living here is complicit in the stuff our braindead leadership is doing. Idk how in Hungary, but Slovakia has a strong opposition, and Fico is holding his pack of clowns that passes as government by a very thin thread. His popularity among people isn't as big as it may look like, and it seems like he will be out by the next election. Not to mention that he is currently under police investigation for high treason, so things are moving.
6
dano1066 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Shouldn’t vote for them so
1
pppjurac Mar 31, 2026 +16
How about NO. This is all Russia, USA and other right wing nuts want. Divide and Conquer by fragmenting EU. We will wait out on election and see what is to be done.
16
Red_Dox Mar 31, 2026 +15
The election will have Orban win since he stacked the system now for 16 years. Even if the other dude wins, not sure he will actually change things for the better. But yeah, guess we can wait a few weeks more. But once Orban stays in charge, EU should pull the rug once and for all. And quick, instead of delaying things further.

Misericorde2222 Mar 31, 2026 -4
Ukraine and europe cant wait for elections

Sure they can.

They should deport you dumbass
-9
protostar71 Mar 31, 2026 +6
Don't like people calling out your government for being Russian bootlickers? Vote them out. Problem solved.
6
kokotek1235 Apr 1, 2026 -1
Do your research they will be voted out in next elections i’am 80% sure
-1
protostar71 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Oh good, over a year from now? Until then, this is the government Slovakia voted for, Europe and NATO should be able to protect themselves from them collaborating with Russia.
2
kokotek1235 Apr 1, 2026 -1
Iam sure you talking on Listnook can do more 😬

Question(s) does the EU have treason laws and/or can national laws be used?
4
jideru Apr 1, 2026 +1
No, those are country specific
1
janktraillover Mar 31, 2026 +6
Good to have some confirmation. Hopefully Hungarian voters get to hear it soon.
6
AuggieNorth Mar 31, 2026 +4
It was kind of naive of the creators of the EU to assume that no member states would ever go rogue, so there was no need to create a strong system to punish or even expel members who go off the reservation.
4
dotBombAU Apr 1, 2026 +2
It was a lot smaller back then with far less integration. At the time no one saw the EU becoming this behemoth.
2
AuggieNorth Apr 1, 2026 +2
Sure, but after admitting so many small Eastern European countries with very different political roots and histories than the West, they should have been worried about the direction some might go, and have a system in place to deal with it. They were hopelessly naive about the supposed end of history with triumph of democracy.
2
sasheenka Apr 1, 2026 +2
It could easily happen in a big Western European country. Marine Le Pen could have won in France, AfD support is growing in Germany… both are financed by Russia.
2
Ithalan Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah, admitting the eastern european EU members is not the problem. The threat is present to some degree in every EU nation.

Putin can't let go of his Cold War f*****. The little gimp. Sadly that means everyone else needs to go back to Cold War levels of rigorous counter-intelligence measures.
3
Trashy_Cappy Apr 1, 2026 +3
if they weren't already being assumed to be backchannels, several someone's should be fired.

Having evidence is a good thing, even if we all ‘knew’.

Wait, this is supposed to be surprising? Granted, not the area of the world that I’m a CL for, but this is kind of like saying “wheels are more efficient for movement than squares”

For fairly obvious values of "secret" I guess.

The surprise is why we're still tolerating them.
2
Rymbegla Mar 31, 2026 +2
Create an EU 2.0 and do not invite Hungary and Slovakia. Move all important decisions to EU 2.0 and let the old EU fade away.

I was just reading earlier about how Netanyahu traveled to Hungary and they refused to enforce the ICC warrant on him for war crimes and are now pulling out of the Rome Statute, now this? Interesting

Secret? Really? The most obvious secret ever? Did anyone ever think anything else? It’s as obvious as Trump being a paedophile and child rapist.
1

Oh nooooooo, Trump will now have egg in his face with his recent full endorsement of Orban and stuff. /s
