I don't understand these talks. What changed from a year and a half ago? They're just stalling for time again.

The first negotiation between Israel and Lebanon in 30 years happened not too long ago. Lebanon doesn't recognize Israel as a country still so they refuse negotiations.

At some point they have to just accept that Israel is not going anywhere and have the capability to stop anyone in the vicinity from making them move. Is this still going to continue even a hundred years from now (assuming both countries still exist)?

Almost all Arab countries signed on to the Arab Peace initiative - an agreement to recognize Israel in exchange for Palestinian statehood. That is a completely reasonable demand. The alternative is leaving them under the current military regime, where they live in de facto bantustans. Anyone who knows anything about the dystopia that is the Israeli rule over the West Bank knows is absolutely insane.

There is a Palestinian state already, it's called Jordan.

> Lebanon doesn't recognize Israel as a country If they don't hurry up and stabilise their own territory, they won't be a country much longer themselves. The naked landgrab from Israel has little reason to stop. Soon enough, it might be fair to speak of the Beirut government, rather than Lebanon. Its been known for a while they can't easily break the political and military influece of Hezbollah. But by now, it seems they will lose considerable territory over it.

When people stop using smartphones and Europe develops a substitute to the arrow system it might happen.

The only significant changes are around the funding. Hezbollah still has money coming in from their drug smuggling and human trafficking networks but the IRGC money is more limited now. There's also the aid from from the gulf, europe, US, etc that was supposed to go to the Lebanese government which might have more stipulations on it regarding their inaction towards keeping their crazies in line. But you're probably right and they're just stalling for time. The Lebanese government will commit to dealing with hezbollah and then do nothing for another 20 years.

So not getting an airport named after him?

I’m guessing if given the choice of not being assasinated vs having an airport named after him, he’d lean towards staying alive.

Id rather be remembered personally. If I was to die right now and Eilat airport were to change to my name, I'd consider it

TL;DR for anyone else who didn't know of him Former PM of Lebanon that was assassinated. Various groups have blamed: * Syria * Israel * Hezbollah

A UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon convicted Hezbollah operative Salim Ayyash in absentia in 2020 for premeditated murder, with two others (Hassan Merhi and Hussein Oneissi) convicted on appeal in 2022 as accomplices. No evidence linked Hezbollah leadership or Syria directly, though early suspicions pointed to Syrian involvement. Hariri opposed Syrian influence in Lebanon; his death sparked the Cedar Revolution, forcing Syrian troop withdrawal by April 2005. Hezbollah denied responsibility, blaming Israel instead.

I get that Netanyahu is terrible. But he is the head of Israel right now, as shitty as that is. It is the responsibility of the Lebanese leader to talk to him. If his goal is peace.

I doubt Netanyahu cares. Hezbollah is the true power in Lebanon

They have been losing to the Lebanese government and army for the past year. They don't have the support of the other religious groups anymore. I recommend looking at more recent polls.

And the Lebanese are quasi-hostages. As long as Iran couldn’t focus on its proxies the Lebanese government thought they had a shot of removing them.  Iran has turned one eye back to its proxies and the Lebanese government is scared again.   The best thing that can happen to the region is for the US to start bombing and scattering Iranian leadership; right now they’re meeting in the open, communicating, and strategizing.

The FIFA Peace laureate is doing a tremendous job. ‘Well nobody is speaking. So it’s quiet. That’s peace. Now let’s talk about the peace I negotiated in Iran…” "Iran immediately shut down President Donald Trump’s claim that it had “agreed to everything” the United States demanded, including handing over its enriched uranium." "Instead, Iran’s foreign ministry said on Friday afternoon that its uranium was not going anywhere."
