I have no idea about what the original musical is but Tick Tick Boom was a phenomenal directorial debut from Miranda so I'm down with whatever he does next

How did I not realise he directed that? That’s a very solid debut.

He was campaigning here and there but the focus of that movie’s release was primarily Jonathan Larson’s legacy and Andrew Garfield’s performance

Did I know that was him?

Honestly I'm curious how he'll translate that stage energy into film. Octet is so intimate, it could either hit really hard or lose something.

If this works though that’ll be exhilarating and especially if he makes other Dave Malloy stuff

Holy shit a Dave Malloy musical being adapted? I’m so so so f****** down. I know Natasha Pierre is impossibly to adapt but that’s my all time musical favorite

Personally, I think Baz Luhrmann is the only guy who could direct an adequately bombastic Great Comet adaptation.

I hate that you might be right

Thought Lin did such an amazing job at Tick Tick Boom so I'm seated. He clearly has a good eye for direction but also knows how to adapt a musical properly knowing how to balance respect for the original work while making changes to make it more suitable for film.

What a rouge choice of musical to adapt to the screen! But how exciting and I can’t wait to see what Lin brings to this, I thought Tick Tick Boom was really good. Always exciting to see a Dave Malloy project. Will be interesting to see how they bring/translate the a Capella aspect of it to the screen. Can’t wait! Here’s to hoping we one day get a Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 adaptation, however tricky that maybe!

I first read this as Ocelot and thought we were getting a Metal Gear musical.

Live adaptation of the revolver twirling on the big screen… pure cinema.

I looked it up, "Octet is an a cappella musical centered on eight internet-obsessed people who meet in a church basement, lock their phones in a box, and share their struggles with digital dependency." I'll pass.

It’s excellent. One of my favorite musicals. Delves into really interesting chronically online territory. Funny and heartbreaking and brilliant because Dave Malloy

Dave Malloy is a less recognized Sondheim, love him so much

jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +21
Knowing Lin is also a chronically online person, I’m very excited to see what he does with this. Tick Tick Boom did not get the recognition it deserved at the time.

COVID. In the Heights suffered from COVID as well as controversy, so it was back to back for him.

jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +4
Yeah, it was a bummer!

ParkerPoseyGuffman Apr 2, 2026 +1
What was the controversy?
1
bindersfull-ofwomen Apr 2, 2026 +3
There was a colorism controversy. Washington Heights is like 50% Afro-Latino, especially 168th up when you leave the Columbia area. People were confused why it looked so differently from the real thing

Oh damn that’s too bad I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know

This was showing by my place just a a few weeks ago. I thought it was a local community theater. I did not know it was supposed to be any sort of deal.

I love the opening song of this show https://youtu.be/feeFdF98FcA?si=pBky1g7aL1ymNQyG

Is this a musical prequel to the Tenet film?

this sounds interesting, really excited to see what lin-manuel does with 'octet.' his unique style will definitely bring something special to it!

This guy has 0 talent, I can say that safely after watching his "songs" in live action Little Mermaid/Mufasa

Bababooey346 Apr 2, 2026 +3
He's one of the most talented musicians alive.

What does Awkwafina's voice have to do with Lin Manuel Miranda?

The worst take lol

Are we still pretending we actually like this guy?
-23
jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +17
What a weird take. Maybe you are? I love this guy! I don’t see any reason to dislike him.

Antique-Dentist-2404 Apr 2, 2026 -20
He's corny af. Hamilton was overrated trash

jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +8
Alright buddy :)

Brawlrteen Apr 2, 2026 -15
He makes “rap” for white folks
-15
jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +5
I wonder if all the original black actors in Hamilton agree with that statement lol
5
Brawlrteen Apr 2, 2026 -9
I mean just his flow for every song is definitely “ hip hop, it started in the park” type shit and very basic. I dont see what the black actors in the show have anything to do with that, theyre just doing thier job following his direction
-9
jdgetrpin Apr 2, 2026 +5
Plenty of black and brown folks love Hamilton, and also love hip hop as a genre. Questlove is a huge fan and even produced the Hamilton mixtape. Your take makes no sense. It’s also ok to dislike something, no need to yell about it.
5
Brawlrteen Apr 2, 2026 -2
I get what youre saying but pit him against any hiphop artist in the last 40 years and its clear he made a sanitized product made to be easily consumed for those unfamiliar with the genre, yeah im ranting but its like an opinion man
-2
jdgetrpin Apr 3, 2026 +3
Why would you, though? He made a Broadway show, it’s insane to want to compare his work to an actual hip hop album unless he was actually trying to sell his work as a hip hop artist. But he’s not, he’s a Broadway songwriter. You need to compare his work to other Broadway shows.

I dont have to pretend, I love LMM. I dont love him as an actor or a singer, but boy can he make some great music, and I really enjoyed Tick Tick Boom.

jdgetrpin Apr 3, 2026 +2
Right? Obsessed with In The Heights and Hamilton music. Anyone who can write the songs in those shows deserves all the accolades in my book.

Dave Malloy? He’s great
