If you loved the books growing up and are ready to learn about Laura Ingalls Wilder read the book Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser. This detailed biography does a great job about the real highs and lows of Laura's life in the context of American history, and explaining how the books came to be (with the help of her daughter Rose).

I'm reading through it now, it's really interesting!

I'm intrigued by this show but I certainly have apprehensions. As a Minnesotan, Laura Ingalls Wilder certainly looms large in my consciousness. We'd talk about her in school and there are historical markers all over the region. The show might be cool way to see some of my local history. On the other hand, it's all set on the backdrop of manifest destiny. The story is set shortly after the incredibly violent Dakota War of 1862 and Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote some really problematic stuff about Indians. There is a lot of darkness happening in the background of this idyllic pioneer story. I hope the show doesn't sweep all of that under the rug.

Small thing, but why isn’t Mary blonde? In every book there was always something from Laura about how jealous she was of Mary’s blonde hair and how hers was just plain brown. I hate when they can’t even do something that simple!

No one is going to greenlight a family friendly project to release in 2026 that has a hair discrimination subplot. 95% of the audience won't notice or care either way (positively or negatively), and the 5% who do care will mostly have a strong, vocal, negative reaction. It's a needless controversy with very little benefit. Part of adapting old books means dropping elements that haven't aged well unless they're absolutely essential to the theme of the overall work. Lots of casually racist, sexist, or antisemitic subplots or minor characters get dropped or reimagined in modern adaptations of canonical Western classics like Shakespeare, Dickens, Brontë, etc

It's almost funny how any adaptation refuses to give Pa his proper beard.

They consider that a Little House? God damn mansion compared to the dirt and twig crack shack from the original.

Why isn't Jack being played by a bulldog? I don't know if I can suspend my disbelief that far.

Ok-Progress-2925 Apr 14, 2026 +2
With all the changes to bulldogs over the years to make them more “conformed to imaginary standards” they probably couldn’t find one athlete enough to perform all the stunts

You sent me down a rabbit hole. Check out this Time article from 2015: [The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder, One of America's First Libertarians ](https://time.com/3848967/laura-ingalls-wilder-is-back/) From her Wikipedia page > Wilder has been referred to by some as one of America's first libertarians.[62](https://time.com/3848967/laura-ingalls-wilder-is-back/ ) She was a long-time Democrat, but became dismayed with Roosevelt's New Deal and what she and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, saw as Americans' increasing dependence on the federal government. Wilder grew disenchanted with her party and resented government agents who came to farms like hers and grilled farmers about the number of acres they were planting. She’d be way into the trad wife thing today advocating for raw milk etc. The original show was already in that “family friendly/religious to vaguely religious” category of shows like 7th Heaven, Touched by an Angel, and Walker Texas Ranger (relatively).

Don’t forget Highway to Heaven.

That would match the original. Michael Landon was a deeply religious man, and had full creative control over the original series, so it had the family's religion almost as a central theme. The original books also had some religious themes, just not as front and center. It'll be interesting to see how much they lean into it, or which direction they lean, with his remake.

They seriously better not. If Ma doesn’t get an abortion by the end of season one, I’m gonna flip.

ShlungusGod69 Apr 13, 2026 -6
Is that a bad thing? I could point to the same few groups that every other Netflix show panders to. I forgot this is Listnook though, so family and religion are le bad.

worksnake Apr 13, 2026 +11
Evangelicalism is what the thread OP mentioned, not religion. And yes, Evangelicalism is unironically le bad, on or off listnook.

Starring Baba Yaga.

Just “Little House” with a subtitle each season seems like the obvious option to me, but I suspect they’re trading on nostalgia for the original series more-so than intending to faithfully adapt the books.

In real life they did go back to Wisconsin for a few years after leaving Kansas so maybe they’ll do it next season (probably not lol, tbh Big Wood probably doesn’t have enough plot to sustain a season)

If it’s not California scrub oak savanna, it’s not authentic Midwestern historical fiction.

Ugh this makes me so disappointed. I was looking forward to the series being like the books. This seems nothing like the books and gives me cheesy Hallmark movie vibes. I feel like it's just a modern take on the original tv show...not like the books. How hard is it to give the actors accurate historical hair styles and costumes? Why is Carrie not there? Why do they look so clean? Why is Mary brunette? Why can't Pa have an actual beard? Making them be best friends with Native Americans almost seems more offensive to me. Like they're just going to pretend that all the racist stuff didn't happen?

finally someone remembered how to color grade!

AevnNoram Apr 13, 2026 +1
Don't know if they're trying to be autobiographical or true to the books. If it's the first it makes sense there's no Carrie yet. If the second, the baby should be there

At first glance it's hard to get into the 'feel' of what I remember the old show as. It's a little too bright pretty and clean. We'll see what it actually looks like at full release.

I mean, the show from the 70's was extremely bright and clean.
