Looking for Crime gone wrong movies.

Posted by JohnFarnham

Looking for suggestions for this type of movie "normal people try to do crime and everything goes wrong" for example: * Fargo * A Simple Plan * Double Indemnity * The Man Who Wasn't There * I, Tonya * Before the Devil Knows Your Dead * Shallow Grave More movies like this please, something something, word count.

Reservoir Dogs

estheredna Apr 3, 2026 +65
LA Confidential I feel like it's kind of forgotten today, and having Kevin Spacey in a big role doen't help, but DAMN is this a good movie. 9 Oscar noms won 2.
65
Superb_Plum_627 Apr 3, 2026 +2
I think the question is about movies where amateurs attempt crime. But yes, "L.A. Confidential" is great and deserves not to be forgotten.
2
hnglmkrnglbrry Apr 3, 2026 +4
Don't think it counts because the story isn't told through the eyes of the criminals but rather the police trying to catch them. And their crimes don't actually go wrong they just get caught as they try and tie up loose ends. Otherwise literally every movie where criminals are arrested would count. Reservoir Dogs is told almost entirely through the eyes of the criminals and in fact even Tim Roth's character becomes a criminal during the crime gone wrong. An example of crime gone wrong would be Heat. First armored truck robbery goes wrong when Waingro kills one guard so they have to drop them all. Then it goes wrong again when Waingro drops breadcrumbs that lead to the bank shootout.
4
estheredna Apr 3, 2026 +8
That would be nice but no. The cops did it. LA Confidential is a hate letter to the murderous, corrupt, evil LAPD.
8
hnglmkrnglbrry Apr 3, 2026 +7
Yes. As told through the eyes of the only 3 un-hateable members of the LAPD who did not knowingly take part in any of the murder or corruption. It's not a crime gone wrong film. Even at the very end Exley calls Dudley "Rollo Tomassi" (aka the one who gets away with it) because he's about to get away with running heroin, girls, blackmailing public officials, wanton murder, and conspiracy. Nothing actually goes wrong in the commission of the crime. Exley actually has to break the law to stop him from getting away with it entirely. LA Confidential is about how crime goes right.

Don’t know if I’d call that crew regular people. Great movie though.

"Snatch" has a bit and is always a classic
104
hnglmkrnglbrry Apr 3, 2026 +51
Snatch is like 9 different crimes all going wrong simultaneously. Stealing diamonds, gambling, fixing fights, selling stolen goods, robbing bookies, recovering stolen diamonds, and killing Pikeys all go terribly wrong.

I'd argue Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is even more so.
19
boot2skull Apr 3, 2026 +3
I like Snatch, but I saw Lock, Stock first and I’ve always enjoyed it more. Also, a good crime gone wrong movie.

Any of Guy Ritchie’s early-ish stuff - Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Rocknrolla. Those are all about more or less regular people who get in over their heads. No Country for Old Men is a great one, too. The Way of the Gun is decent. It could be better, but it kinda feels like it’s trying to be a Tarantino movie, but doesn’t quite make it.

“Small Time Crooks” by Woody Allen both fits your criteria PERFECTLY, while also kinda being the exact opposite of what you are asking for. It’s unfortunate that it’s a Woody Allen movie in ways everyone understands, because the cast is outstanding. Tracey Ullman and Elaine May both give outstanding performances. If you decide to watch it, DO NOT look up anything about it, you need to go in cold.

Foreign stuff good? You want Gonin. Five broke guys decide to try and rob and scam the yakuza. It does not go according to plan naturally. Basically evolves into a horror film for the five afterwards. *Not* for the faint of heart, some violent onscreen SA and plenty of other disturbing imagery, but very good and very what you asked for.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which is the first entry in Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy (you may be familiar with its middle entry, Oldboy) is the epitome of this. Fair warning it’s one of the most brutal watches I’ve ever had, not because it’s ultraviolent (it’s not really) but because of the sheer bleakness of what happens.
