Looking for medieval-1800's movie/tv scenes with English with a Spanish accent

Posted by sono2351

I'm trying to find example of scenes from movies and tv with a medieval English speaker, with a Spanish accent. Could be anywhere from 1300's to 1700-early 1800's-ish. Especially if the character is military, or a soldier, general, something like that. I thought to look at Sharpe, and am looking at some scenes from that and Hornblower. I know I've seen a lot, and as soon as I get a suggestion I'll be like, oh yeah, of course. Anyone have any suggestions? Scenes or characters with that accent, notable? From that era?

Captain Alatriste (the Viggo Mortensen movie) might scratch that itch a bit, since it is literally Spanish soldiers in that era. Also check the 1973 Three Musketeers and its sequels, some of the guards and nobles have very obvious Spanish accents. Not exactly “English speaker with Spanish accent” but the Spanish officer in Master and Commander has that vibe in the brief scenes we get of him.

Someone else suggested those Three Musketeers movies and I couldn't believe that I hadn't thought of it, right off hahha. Thanks. Yeah I'll give Master and Commander a rewatch. Captain Alatriste. Nice. Added to the list.

Inigo Montoya from Princess Bride is probably the most famous one - he's got that perfect Spanish accent and fits your timeline as a swordsman.

Is this a bit just to see how many of us say Inigo Montoya?

Not at all. I just know I've seen so many movies, or TV shows, with that character, but I can't, for the life of me, think of any of them. And I've been on such a Western kick, the last year or so, that I'm only seeing those characters.

That was the first one I thought of, and Hornblower. Have already been finding, and rewatching, those scenes.

You might want to check out The Mask of Zorro. Antonio Banderas leans into the accent a bit and it’s set in that late 1700s/early 1800s vibe you’re talking about.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age primarily deals with England's war against Spain and their Armada. There are two notable Spanish characters in the movie: one speaks in English and the other in Spanish.

this is a super niche request, but have you checked out "The Three Musketeers" adaptations? there are some that feature characters with Spanish accents, and they often have military themes. also, "The Spanish Princess" has some good interactions in that time period which could be what you're looking for.

The recent version of Shogun might. I know there’s Portuguese, I just can’t remember if anyone speaks Spanish.

Not Spanish, English with a Spanish accent.

Ah, right. A lot of the dialogue is in English though.

The 13th Warrior 1492 Conquest of Paradise. Isn't it a little bit insane that both trailers happen to have the same trailer voice guy and theme song??

There are certainly a number of pirate movies that feature Spanish characters. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has Javier Bardem playing Captain Salazar.
