a lot of tech in the space race was dual purpose and reused in testing ICMBs, Russia putting a radio beacon in space was a big warning they could drop a nuke a from space.

I think at this point, with what we know right now, there's no chance we become a space faring race IMO. A space race only makes sense if we can bring those space resources back to orbit to use. Our species is very much stuck on this planet for as long as the resources last.

It is a wiered and annoying world when you're looking for furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, and living through the events of it at the same time (not like the events really ended). US backed regime changes arpund the globe, McCarthyism, Russian occupations, strained relations with China, nuclear proliferation, the fear of atomic annihilation, civil unrest around race, gender, and sexual identity, overbearing nationalism, and authoritarian strong types popping up again.

Looking at the facts: a Country with nuclear weapons will never be invaded, coerced or bullied. Nuclear proliferation is frightening but in a world were at least two psychotic countries are playing "Might makes right" no one should ever blame any country for pursuing nuclear weapons. Sweet words of cooperation and diplomacy will only work as long as the nuclear countries have stable and appeasing leaderships. Warlords who think their nuclear arsenals are power multipliers and a permission to bully others, bear the entire blame for nuclear proliferation. Many countries don't want nuclear weapons but feel forced into pursuing them, just to be left alone in peace. Analogy: many gun owners are not comfortable with having weapons but as long as criminals run around pointing weapons to feel less small, people have to keep a weapon for self defense. Don't want an arms race? Then stop using nuclear weapons as an excuse to bully, invade and kill others.
