I was reflecting on this line earlier last month when I had some Arby's, it's crazy how memorable and impactful a single, thoughtless throwaway line could be in a show as popular and influential as the Simpsons. This episode is approaching 30 years old and that line still comes to mind when I think of Arby's .. and the writers could have chosen (read: punished) ANY fast food restaurant. I imagine Arby's sales took a hit because of the association

Same. There's an Arby's by me that's been closed for years and I always think of this line when I drive by it. Also, Seinfeld's "Feels like an Arby's night."

I have never heard about it. I've just checked up, his name is David McKenna, and his IMDB page doesn't confirm it, there is just Lord of the Flies on it.
Lox Pratt who played Jack here plays Draco Malfoy though. I saw him in promo materials for the nu-Potter show.

As in, he needed a double kidney transplant, and they each donated one? Or like, he has a kidney from each of his parents stuffed and mounted above the fireplace? The level of "interesting" varies by what he's doing with their kidneys.

But the whole point of Lord of the Flies is that anyone’s morals will decay to tribalism in the absence of enforced societal rules.

96
crossedstavesApr 6, 2026

More about the nature of the education of privileged British schoolboys than anything else. It chooses a very specific group of people to strand on the island for a reason. They are not a representative group of humanity. They are a group specifically indoctrinated with very strong hierarchical structures and obedience. The most fundamental source of their morality is duty to institutions, they are not truly supposed to be moral agents themselves.
You obey a teacher not because you have decided they are a trustworthy and someone you respect but because they have been bestowed authority by an institution.
You do what you're told because otherwise you will get a caning or whatever.
Their morality did not disappear when they became stranded, they didn't actually have it to begin with. Obedient children to grow up to be obedient soldiers don't need to be making moral judgments on their own.
17
ArthurBeaApr 6, 2026
+32
Hm. I see what you’re saying. But I think when Golding wrote it, he took for granted “normal” childhood for his generation. Which would include a lot of behaviors, actions and beliefs we don’t tolerate today. Things we now understand are traumatic, things we now understand are linked to anti-social behavior.
32
monstrinhotronApr 6, 2026
+11
Yeah back then there would have been a lot of trauma from WW2 still around as well as instituionalised cruelty in schools because. Well. Sadism and tradition seems to be the only real answers.
11
ArziltheImpApr 6, 2026
+2
Childhood trauma from war generation issues was part of the social commentary of the book.
Also the moral deterioration stems from Jack being about status and trying to be dominant. He wants to be the king but doesn’t want to do the ugly stuff that comes with it. And as he leads the hunters, they get easy success (making a plan and upholding a social hierarchy is a lot less flashy than bringing meat) making people want to be part of the glory.
So I would argue the deterioration of the society is a result of who Jack is more, than society just doing it by itself.
It’s more “everyone can do evil, but it takes someone evil to get the ball rolling” than just “society is doomed to fail because everyone is default evil”. So I think showing that Jack is this way not because of himself, but his upbringing and Ralph is good because his parents raised him with more care, kind of strengthens the core message.

It was a subversion of a trope at the time where English boys would get stranded on an island and build a whole civilization there. The author of the book was a schoolteacher basically going “yeah that’s not how my kids would act if they were stranded on an island”
27
CranyxApr 6, 2026
+8
What's funny is that the "trope" essentially comes from Robinson Crusoe, which is based on the real story of Alexander Selkirk. The "humans will find a way to survive" narrative is rooted in reality. Otherwise civilization would never have arrived

Lord of the Flies was written as a subversion of the, at the time, hugely popular genre of British Schoolboys "civilising" the wild.
Unlike the Tongans (who also had experience in such environments) a bunch of the boys in LotF come from public (read private) school and are full of entitlement and find themselves free of any adult scrutiny and are able to full enleash their worst tendancies for the first time.
As a Brit I picture in my head the likes of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jacob Reese Mogg, Nigel Farage, George Osbourne and Ian Duncan Smith as children in a similar situation and LotF seems pretty accurate.

Behavioral economics is wrong all the time though. We can argue about scale, but you can’t argue that for 99% of human history, we survived by cooperating, not competing. You don’t survive an ice age with “rugged individualism.”

I’ve said it time and time again, but no matter what people think, in direct, dire situations humans can surprise you. Not to say we’re ALWAYS kind and communal but there’s more cases of total disaster where people band together than turn into feral monsters.
And before people say COVID, 1) that got unfortunately politicized by idiots and 2) it wasn’t direct in the sense that one could easily see the effects. No I’m not denying COVID, just saying it looks to an untrained eye like a regular respiratory illness so people didn’t respond to it like the emergency it was.

So I watched this. It’s one of my favorite books so I had to check it out as soon as I could.
It was fantastic. I am so excited that it’s coming to Netflix so I can watch it again.

Saw this a few months ago and the cinematography is outstanding.
just as heart wrenching as you remember the book from childhood.
i think it could have been 1-2 episodes longer but definitely would recommend watching.

Ahh yes, another adaptation of a story by an alcoholic teacher who hated the students at the all boys school he worked at.

I remember seeing a long clip a few months ago and kid actors looked great the setting looked great but the directing with the camera and camera work was f****** shocking. All these stupid angles and shaky came, also seemed to go in and out of focus

I know this sounds pathetic but this is the only movie adaptation where I’ve actually read the book 😂

Nope. I'm still traumatized from seeing this as a kid and as a parent of sons this age? Not happening.

Wait, so this is a different lord of the flies adaptation than the one that came out a month ago?

Isn’t it the same one? It was a BBC production (with an Australian company also onboard), and Netflix got the US rights for streaming

I think I’ll watch this just to see the new Draco Malfoy actor at work. And maybe it’ll encourage me to finally read the book (I’m not sure how I haven’t yet, honestly)

Thought it was brilliant. Sometimes tough to watch but for great reasons. Acting was out of this world.

What sucks is the story it’s based on is a bunch of kids who banded together to survive on an island. They developed a leadership structure, they voted, they worked together, and it was only because of that that they survived. This show is his going to disrespect that story and add to the toxic narrative that people are inherently monsters without civilization as a structure (it’s actually the opposite and that’s why our species of human survived up until this point where, wouldn’t you know it, civilization is leading to us destroying each other and the planet we live on. Yay.)
