I was reflecting on this line earlier last month when I had some Arby's, it's crazy how memorable and impactful a single, thoughtless throwaway line could be in a show as popular and influential as the Simpsons. This episode is approaching 30 years old and that line still comes to mind when I think of Arby's .. and the writers could have chosen (read: punished) ANY fast food restaurant. I imagine Arby's sales took a hit because of the association
12
Darmok47 Apr 6, 2026 +3
Same. There's an Arby's by me that's been closed for years and I always think of this line when I drive by it. Also, Seinfeld's "Feels like an Arby's night."
3
FriendlyFriendster Apr 6, 2026 +7
People do crazy things on TV. Like eat at Arby's.
7

Pitching an idea here: one of the kids packed some of his mother's jars instead of his "bugs jar" (where he keeps bugs as a hobby) by accident - his mother is a "toxicologist"...see what I'm getting at?

It was generally okay. A few perfomances were great, I liked Piggy's actor the most, I hope he is going to get some career. Cinematography was amazing, but some people told it was too artsy.
366

Hard to get type cast as Piggy
4
SellaraAB Apr 6, 2026 +8
The only artsy aspect that kind of didn’t work for me was the excessive montages of closeups of all the kid’s faces. It was cool sometimes, but they did it too much.
8
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Apr 6, 2026 +26
I can already kinda see how some people might not like the cinematography, but I think I'll like it in the sense that it'll make the story feel like a demented fever dream (through the perspective of the kids)

It wasn't weirder than Harry Morgan (James Remar) playing the pig's head in They Will Kill You.
4
AbroadTiny7226 Apr 6, 2026 +9
I liked it up until the end of episode 3. I wont spoil anything, but I thought the filming of that scene was incredibly confusing for people who have not already read the book. I had to look up what happened. Never a fan of needing to consult outside sources to understand a scene.
9
Hollacaine Apr 6, 2026 +4
Yeah they could definitely have made that a bit clearer, especially for a key moment in the story.
4
-Greis- Apr 6, 2026 +15
Kid who played Piggy got cast in Harry Potter too. This was his first roll. Interesting fact: He has a kidney from each of his parents.

> Kid who played Piggy got cast in Harry Potter I have never heard about it. I've just checked up, his name is David McKenna, and his IMDB page doesn't confirm it, there is just Lord of the Flies on it. Lox Pratt who played Jack here plays Draco Malfoy though. I saw him in promo materials for the nu-Potter show.
24
Chris238 Apr 6, 2026 +2
As I was watching it I thought “damn he would make a great Draco malfoy” I was so happy when I looked up the actor later and he was already cast as him haha
2
ArtIsDumb Apr 6, 2026 +10
As in, he needed a double kidney transplant, and they each donated one? Or like, he has a kidney from each of his parents stuffed and mounted above the fireplace? The level of "interesting" varies by what he's doing with their kidneys.
10
TGrumms Apr 6, 2026 +7
Who did he get cast as in Harry Potter? I know the actor who plays Jack is Malfoy, and I had read that Piggy’s actor will be in the new Narnia movie, but I wasn’t aware he was also cast in Harry Potter
7
mikewheelerfan Apr 6, 2026 +5
I think they’re confusing Piggy’s actor with Jack’s actor, who is playing Draco
5
colemang1992 Apr 6, 2026 +2
The direction was awful imo, took away from some good performances
2
harshnoisebestnoise Apr 6, 2026 +151
Yeah it’s f****** wicked. BBC really knock it out the park when they get this sort of IP. Beautiful stuff
151
TheOncomingBrows Apr 6, 2026 +100
Thought they kind of missed the point a bit though by giving all the children backstories that explained their behaviour.
100
harshnoisebestnoise Apr 6, 2026 +42
Probably trying to create more social commentary, which I know is already a huge point of it, but nowadays people love the relationism of childhood trauma.
42
religiousrights Apr 6, 2026 +96
But the whole point of Lord of the Flies is that anyone’s morals will decay to tribalism in the absence of enforced societal rules. If you want to change a classic story to be more “trendy” just call it Yellowjackets or whatever.
96
crossedstaves Apr 6, 2026 +17
More about the nature of the education of privileged British schoolboys than anything else. It chooses a very specific group of people to strand on the island for a reason. They are not a representative group of humanity. They are a group specifically indoctrinated with very strong hierarchical structures and obedience. The most fundamental source of their morality is duty to institutions, they are not truly supposed to be moral agents themselves. You obey a teacher not because you have decided they are a trustworthy and someone you respect but because they have been bestowed authority by an institution. You do what you're told because otherwise you will get a caning or whatever. Their morality did not disappear when they became stranded, they didn't actually have it to begin with. Obedient children to grow up to be obedient soldiers don't need to be making moral judgments on their own.
17
ArthurBea Apr 6, 2026 +32
Hm. I see what you’re saying. But I think when Golding wrote it, he took for granted “normal” childhood for his generation. Which would include a lot of behaviors, actions and beliefs we don’t tolerate today. Things we now understand are traumatic, things we now understand are linked to anti-social behavior.
32
monstrinhotron Apr 6, 2026 +11
Yeah back then there would have been a lot of trauma from WW2 still around as well as instituionalised cruelty in schools because. Well. Sadism and tradition seems to be the only real answers.
11
ArziltheImp Apr 6, 2026 +2
Childhood trauma from war generation issues was part of the social commentary of the book. Also the moral deterioration stems from Jack being about status and trying to be dominant. He wants to be the king but doesn’t want to do the ugly stuff that comes with it. And as he leads the hunters, they get easy success (making a plan and upholding a social hierarchy is a lot less flashy than bringing meat) making people want to be part of the glory. So I would argue the deterioration of the society is a result of who Jack is more, than society just doing it by itself. It’s more “everyone can do evil, but it takes someone evil to get the ball rolling” than just “society is doomed to fail because everyone is default evil”. So I think showing that Jack is this way not because of himself, but his upbringing and Ralph is good because his parents raised him with more care, kind of strengthens the core message.

I agree, felt very underwhelming. Was very excited but left ultimately disappointed. The pacing was awful and it felt extremely slow. Was all in on the slow burn but the pqayoff was ultimately very underwhelming.

Hopefully netflix didn't do the underpaying for solid public content again
3
monstrinhotron Apr 6, 2026 +13
Really good. Best version i've seen. Takes a few liberties by focusing each episode on a single character but keeps all the themes and plot points intact. Can get quite trippy in a good way. I did wonder if one character was supposed to be colour blind as his episode was most red/green weird.
13
DictatorSalad Apr 6, 2026 +11
It was incredible and gross and frustrating and sad. I loved it but I don't think I'd do a rewatch, unless I had several feel good movies lined up after.
11
donkey2471 Apr 6, 2026 +14
Depends if you’re in to the artsy style of filmmaking. Is very good show but if you’re not into that style of film you’ll probs not enjoy it as much. Acting and the cinematography are the stand outs.
14
King-Of-Throwaways Apr 6, 2026 +10
In the very least, the artsy style is a nice change from the norm. People who complain about the homogenised, muddy mid-tone look of modern shows should watch it to see some striking colour choices.
10
cocopopped Apr 6, 2026 +3
It was decent enough. Quite trippy/shoegazy for the average viewer. It got quite a bit of coverage for a while in the buildup but then all hype disappeared after it was aired, so I think a lot of people thought it was shit.
3
basedcvrp Apr 6, 2026 +3
It’s got a bit of an abstract art house style, child actor performances were great. I enjoyed it.
3
GnomeNot Apr 6, 2026 +6
I watched it. It’s really good. I read the book a long time ago, and from what I recall it’s very accurate to the book. I really enjoyed it and will probably rewatch it at some point.
6
dstrom21 Apr 6, 2026 +2
Definitely on the artsey side as others have mentioned. Only 4 episodes, each centering on an individual character. Relatively faithful to the novel. Very solid performances by all involved. I enjoyed it.

16
niamhellen Apr 6, 2026 +15
Sooo talented, he really made me feel for his character despite being the antagonist. He did an incredible job "masking" his vulnerability and fear with bravado.

I haven’t seen this show, but it sounds like he will be an absolutely perfect Draco Malfoy

In fairness to the author, I believe the book was meant to be a critique of the culture of English boarding schools rather than one of human nature in general.

Shawnj2 Apr 6, 2026 +27
It was a subversion of a trope at the time where English boys would get stranded on an island and build a whole civilization there. The author of the book was a schoolteacher basically going “yeah that’s not how my kids would act if they were stranded on an island”
27
Cranyx Apr 6, 2026 +8
What's funny is that the "trope" essentially comes from Robinson Crusoe, which is based on the real story of Alexander Selkirk. The "humans will find a way to survive" narrative is rooted in reality. Otherwise civilization would never have arrived
8
king_wrass Apr 6, 2026 +18
And the Tongan boys were much older. 13-19 instead of 6-12.
18
erwan Apr 6, 2026 +14
Maybe, unfortunately it was used as an illustration that humans are wild animals, individualistic by nature unless they get tamed by "civilisation".
14
Poop-Sandwich Apr 7, 2026 +3
Holy shit the lack of reading comprehension. This wasn’t the point of it at all.
3
oswaldluckyrabbiy Apr 6, 2026 +93
Lord of the Flies was written as a subversion of the, at the time, hugely popular genre of British Schoolboys "civilising" the wild. Unlike the Tongans (who also had experience in such environments) a bunch of the boys in LotF come from public (read private) school and are full of entitlement and find themselves free of any adult scrutiny and are able to full enleash their worst tendancies for the first time. As a Brit I picture in my head the likes of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jacob Reese Mogg, Nigel Farage, George Osbourne and Ian Duncan Smith as children in a similar situation and LotF seems pretty accurate.
93
deligonca Apr 6, 2026 +14
They were older, already close friends and there were only six of them. It is easy to cooperate and empathize in small groups, at least that is what behavioral economics tells us.
14
NakedJaked Apr 7, 2026 +3
Behavioral economics is wrong all the time though. We can argue about scale, but you can’t argue that for 99% of human history, we survived by cooperating, not competing. You don’t survive an ice age with “rugged individualism.”
3
crimson777 Apr 6, 2026 +20
I’ve said it time and time again, but no matter what people think, in direct, dire situations humans can surprise you. Not to say we’re ALWAYS kind and communal but there’s more cases of total disaster where people band together than turn into feral monsters. And before people say COVID, 1) that got unfortunately politicized by idiots and 2) it wasn’t direct in the sense that one could easily see the effects. No I’m not denying COVID, just saying it looks to an untrained eye like a regular respiratory illness so people didn’t respond to it like the emergency it was.

Saw this earlier in the year. Fantastic adaptation with decent acting from the kids and great cinematography.
3
bfsfan101 Apr 6, 2026 +3
This was much better than I expected, given I had to study the book in school and so had no real interest in the TV version. It's fairly faithful to the story but finds some interesting ways to do it visually. Some people found it too weird but I liked how nightmarish it gets in the last two episodes. It genuinely feels like a fight for survival. Plus, most of the kids are great actors.

It was honestly better than I expected. Piggy is fantastic. Also, I kept saying to myself that the actor who plays Jack would have been a fantastic Malfoy . . . and sure enough, that kid actually IS playing Draco Malfoy in the new Harry Potter series! I'm pretty certain he's going to be a shoo-in for the part. 💯

I remember seeing a long clip a few months ago and kid actors looked great the setting looked great but the directing with the camera and camera work was f****** shocking. All these stupid angles and shaky came, also seemed to go in and out of focus

I know this sounds pathetic but this is the only movie adaptation where I’ve actually read the book 😂

Nope. I'm still traumatized from seeing this as a kid and as a parent of sons this age? Not happening.

Wait, so this is a different lord of the flies adaptation than the one that came out a month ago?

Isn’t it the same one? It was a BBC production (with an Australian company also onboard), and Netflix got the US rights for streaming

I think I’ll watch this just to see the new Draco Malfoy actor at work. And maybe it’ll encourage me to finally read the book (I’m not sure how I haven’t yet, honestly)

Thought it was brilliant. Sometimes tough to watch but for great reasons. Acting was out of this world.

Back when they were kids, they got onto an island and beat the shit out of each other for real. None of this battle bus slurp juice business.

The true story or the one fabricated by the depressed alcoholic?

Being a chubby kid growing up, f*** this book.

confused_hulk Apr 6, 2026 +1
What sucks is the story it’s based on is a bunch of kids who banded together to survive on an island. They developed a leadership structure, they voted, they worked together, and it was only because of that that they survived. This show is his going to disrespect that story and add to the toxic narrative that people are inherently monsters without civilization as a structure (it’s actually the opposite and that’s why our species of human survived up until this point where, wouldn’t you know it, civilization is leading to us destroying each other and the planet we live on. Yay.)
