**Trump's** Canada trade deal, the USMCA? The one HE made during his last term and called "the largest, fairest, and most balanced trade agreement ever made"? Is that the "rip-off" deal that so badly needs to be replaced?

American here: nor should you.
F*** this a******. F*** this administration in its entirety. And f*** every single person who threw their lot in with it or refused to get off their soap boxes long enough to oppose it.
The only way I could ever see our nations reconciling even *slightly* is if people like Trump, his cabinet, and the sycophants across the legislature and judiciary were marched up to gallows, hooded, and then be made to river dance at the business end of a rope after the doors drop from under their feat.
And even then, they will never again be "normal" because we both know the 130 million moronic, bigoted, and/or lazy bags of shit responsible for this shit show won't even get a social slap on the wrist.

You're right.
American citizens will be getting the side-eye from the rest of the world for a lonnnnnggggg time.
As a Canadian, I don't expect any sort of normalization between our countries in my lifetime. It turns out that we actually *don't* share a lot of the values that we assumed we had in common. At least, not at a national level.
America needs to get her shit together, and eat a whole fuckload of humble pie in the process.

I’ve come to that realization as well. Even the so called normal Americans still believe they live in the greatest country in the world (whatever that means). Canadians and most other citizens of other countries would be hanging their heads in shame if we were in their shoes.

Have you thought this through? There are alternative markets for our exports. We have natural resources that the Americans desperately need (that’s called leverage). The resources we import can be sourced elsewhere as well.

Are you planning to repeal your own tariffs? Remember the whole point of the problem is that Canada has historically had high tariffs on American imports and then threw a fit when America started doing their own tariffs.
Americans have a right to be angry with Trump's admin. Canadians don't. Either reduce your own tariffs or stop claiming America is doing something wrong when they do the same thing.

You mean the USMCA that Trump negotiated in his first term that at the time was "the bestest biggliest trade deal to ever trade deal" and now somehow is absolutely terrible.
How do Americans keep falling for this? This retconning of American and world history to be whatever Trump wants it to be at the moment. It's baffling how people can forget something that happened only a few years ago. Then again they forget what Trump said and did a few days / weeks ago.

What tariffs on US goods, specifically, should Canada repeal?
Under NAFTA and the CUSMA, 99% of US goods were tariff free. The only exceptions were eggs, milk products, and poultry, which had high tariffs once an import quota was reached in order to prevent the US from dumping products into Canada. Imports from the US rarely had those tariffs charged because so few US products follow the food regulations.Canadian farmers have to follow. Canadians do not want American substandard food.
For a while Canada did have a 25% tariff on all US goods last year, in retaliation for Trump's insane tariff spree. Most of those have been cancelled with the exception of those on aluminum and steel. Again, in retaliation for ongoing tariffs set by the US.
As for "Canadians don't have the right to be angry with the Trump admin", you can f*** right off with that nonsense. From insults to our political leaders, threats of invading our country, and funding/support of Maple MAGA groups looking to tear the country apart, Canadians have every right to hate the Trump admin and the US.
41
Kindly_Professor54331 day ago
+15
Prior to 2025, the average effective tariff rate between the US and Canada on both sides of the trade relationship was close to 0. They still remain among the lowest in the world due to the conditions of USMCA.
The supposed premise of the tariffs on Canada was about border security and fentanyl, not tariff retaliation. Although the administration doesn’t even have a consistent narrative.

Stop lying.
The tariffs were initially put because of the "fentanyl crisis coming from Canada". Except that this was a crock of bullshit, as the amount of fentanyl coming from Canada was minimal.
After this, they changed the goalpost and starting complaining about our tariffs, putting up a bunch of lies and omissions as reasons. Our dairy quotas are quota-based, saying they're at 300% is not true as said-quota is basically never reached and just there to prevent a larger economy from dumping their c**** dairy on our market.. That statement that we don't allow american banks in Canada? Another lie. They just have to follow Canadian law.

Without this we'd have the moron politicization of "Canada is ripping us off". Oh shit this dude, forgot he existed.
You know what the fun part is? No we don't have to rework the existing deal. You got a meeting to renew the existing one, get out of it or spend the remainder of your short time left in office drafting half an agreement.
Balls in your court bro. Let us know. Day by day Canadians see America as more of TV show (ref: Jersey Shore) than a partner or ally. It's stinging a little but we will be alright, when we reach the right balance, where we are not dependent or interlink aggressively with another nation.
Alberta will probably give favourable pricing for the heavy crude you guy refine, but all the other benefits, those are going away and probably not coming back. It not going to be overtly punishing to the USA, Trump can laugh that off, I am sure there will be some points where having the old relation would make things go ALOT smoother. I guess we will see how it goes. :o
8
Kindly_Professor54331 day ago
+3
Even if they decide to not renew the agreement, it could expire in nearly a decade. That’s more than enough time for the next administration to change everything back. If they want to withdraw from USMCA, they need congressional approval and make sure that no more than a few Republicans vote against it.
