Who is doing the purging, Delcy Rodriguez, who was sanctioned for corruption by Trump and many other countries a few years ago? I can’t get past the paywall.
441
Kosmicon Apr 18, 2026 +433
The article is claiming Delcy, the former vice president is purging Maduros supporters and die hards. "In the three months since Mr. Maduro’s capture, Ms. Rodríguez has changed 17 ministers, replaced military commanders and installed new diplomats. She has also overseen the detention of at least three businessmen tied to Mr. Maduro, fired several of his relatives and cut off most of his family from oil contracts." Goes on to say that she's installing her own supporters and clients.

maddprof Apr 18, 2026 +178
Yah isn’t she supposedly as bad as maduro in the first place?
178
xanas263 Apr 18, 2026 +311
She was his 2nd in command, this is just her removing his supporters and replacing them with her own.

Yeah, they’re doing great, because the secret to defeating fascism is totally just installing another fascist

A woman now controls most of Venezuela's assets. That's a big win for gender equality! The gender pay gap is decreasing too.

Lol what a weird take from this situation.

Sounds like you want a spin: The Regime has technically changed. There ya go.

Supposedly not since she actually has governing skills and helped bringing the economy back from complete collapse. And Venezuelans are somewhat optimistic from the change and there's reporting of improvements. https://www.economist.com/briefing/2026/04/16/venezuela-is-not-the-triumph-donald-trump-claims-but-its-improving

She’s as bad with no skills - source in laws in Venezuela

My wife is venezualan and has family there and they are all afraid to say anything about the current government... I dont think there is this level of optimism you are describing. Where did you hear that?

Draining the swamp so you can replace it with your own swamp is all the rage these days.
48
LaconicLacedaemonian Apr 18, 2026 -3
It's a fetid pool of their own construction, not a swamp.

Bespoke swamp.

NotAnotherEmpire Apr 18, 2026 +7
Zero legitimacy gangster regime (no fair elections for a decade), there's no insurance besides taking out rivals before they purge you.
7
hiricinee Apr 18, 2026 +4
Im still wondering if this was a big inside/outside job by Delcy to assist the US in deposing Maduro and assuming the leadership. Bonus points if she doesnt plan to rig the next election.
4
jorgepolak Apr 18, 2026 +5
When Putin took power, he declared was on the corrupt oligarchs that captured the country after the Soviet Union dissolved. He succeeded, and replaced them with his KGB buddies as the new oligarchs.
5
Away-Lead-3855 Apr 18, 2026
As anyone in her current situation would, yeah? Thanks much for the summary!

Jaded-Kangaroo569 Apr 18, 2026 +215
She’s not purging Maduro supporters. She’s purging those who might oppose her and replacing them with loyalist. She’s not anti-corruption or pro-democracy. She pro Delcy.

1994yankeesfan Apr 18, 2026 +32
That’s what you do when you become dictator. See *The Great Purge* or *The Night of the Long Knives*

The yanks suck! The angels shall rise again!
1
1994yankeesfan Apr 18, 2026 +53
Not surprised. It was always clear that this was more of a palace coup. Now she’s in charge, and is solidifying her position. Out with the old crooked tinpot dictator, in with the new. Rinse and repeat.
53
Unhappy-Alps5471 Apr 18, 2026
Does that mean though that US companies are now able to get to Venezuelan oil?
0
Momoselfie Apr 19, 2026 +1
I don't know how much the US even wants the type of oil that comes out of Venezuela.
1
Unhappy-Alps5471 Apr 19, 2026 +1
Wasn’t that the whole reason for the kidnapping in the first place?
1
cheesaremorgia Apr 18, 2026
Sure but it’s going to take major investments.

Harmonic_Flatulence Apr 18, 2026 +30
>In their places, she has appointed her own loyalists or championed businessmen beholden to her, while opening the doors to American oil and mining investors. Yeah, she is just changing things so that she can reap all the benefits of being in charge. One corrupt leader for another....
30
robot_ankles Apr 18, 2026 +6
Do we have to keep saying "corrupt leader" when discussing world leaders? It's like saying "wet fish."

What's the status on Diosdado Cabello (Interior Minister) and Vladimir Padrino López (Defense Minister)? They have more power than Rodriguez.

Sometimes the most that you can hope for is that the thieves trip over each other's dicks while they are busy robbing. This seems to be one of those times. Those who are being cast out will have to console themselves while eating jamón ibérico in their luxury condos in Barrio Salamanca Madrid. At least there are hundreds of political prisoners that have been verifiably set free. The last I heard there were still quite a few remaining, roughly 500.
7
sadacal Apr 18, 2026 +4
Don't worry they will fill those prisons right back up with more political prisoners as people start protesting her regime.
4
Anthemic_Fartnoises Apr 18, 2026 +21
Does our wonderful President know about this?! He wanted to liberate the people of Venezuela from a brutal dictatorship- I remember him saying that! There’s no way he would go to the trouble of removing the leader of another country only to have another dictator take over. And definitely wouldn’t allow this just because the new regime starts letting American businesses exploit their country. That would be terrible and hasn’t happened before because it’s so against our expressed values. Certainly our Most American President wouldn’t be the first!!
21
xX609s-hartXx Apr 18, 2026 +14
He got his "Maduro captured!" headlines, that's enough of a victory for him.
14
Affectionate_Oven_77 Apr 18, 2026 +17
It has nothing to do with Maduro. This has always been about getting Exxon and friends their Venezuelan oil. There’s a reason they gave tens of millions of dollars for his election campaign.
17
chaos0xomega Apr 18, 2026 +11
Thing is they dont really want it. Theres no stability or long term future in venezuela currently, nor is it possible for them to operate there profitably. Theyre basically waiting on the us govt to give them a handout to invest into the necessary modernization.
11
Ok-Blood4340 Apr 18, 2026 +1
There *wasn’t* a way for them to operate in Venezuela profitably, at $50 a barrel. But how does $80+ a barrel and a more sympathetic regime change that calculus? If only Exxon had some windfall profits from a sudden jump in export price to cover their future capex.
1
Independent_Lie_7324 Apr 19, 2026 +1
This is all being dictated by the Presidents men. Take a look at history, puppet regimes as long as the toe a few key lines, get to stay in power.

They are? So the generals just walked away from their power base?
1
Independent_Lie_7324 Apr 19, 2026 +2
I’m guessing the CIA is dictating all this. She was given an offer she couldn’t refuse.

What about that Diosdado Caballo guy
2
kharvel0 Apr 18, 2026 +2
A couple of things to note: 1) The Iranian leadership has been following the events in Venezuela with keen interest. What happened in Venezuela almost exactly tracks what happened in Iran in the 1950s when the CIA engineered the coup d’état of the Mossadegh government. The only difference was that Mossadegh was popular in Iran. 2) If the events in Venezuela are not handled carefully, it may become another Iran in a few decades, similar to what happened in 1979. Instead of a Muslim theocracy, we may have something similar to Cuba. Time will tell.

>Now, the people who kept him in power are being purged gradually and inconspicuously. Some have been fired or detained, and others are anxiously looking over their shoulders, worried they might be next. >Oligarchs close to Mr. Maduro’s family have been snatched from their homes. His political allies have been summarily removed from their posts. His relatives have been sidelined from business deals and barred from media appearances. This is a good thing. The oligarchs who kept Maduro in power are pure evil.

Ragnaroq314 Apr 18, 2026 -17
Nooooo this is Listnook. Trump was involved so this is actually as bad as it can possibly get! You must support the horrific regimes and leaders who brutalize their people because Orangeman bad
-17
Available_Finger_513 Apr 18, 2026 +11
Why do you people argue with yourselves? Is it because you are only capable of arguing with a moron?
11
Ok_Roll4145 Apr 18, 2026 +4
Wasn’t Delcy Maduro’s second in command? How is she any better? Sounds like she’s just following trumps process of installing loyal sycophants. There hasn’t been a “regime change”. We kidnapped one guy lol
4
chaos0xomega Apr 18, 2026 +1
Yeah, arguably Delcy is worse, she was believed to be the one who actually organized and ran the "Cartel de los Soles" scheme that Maduro is in prison for.
1
imk Apr 18, 2026 +1
And Diosdado Cabello is still wandering around Caracas free as a bird.

Let's see if they finally learn their lesson. I recall arguing with people on Facebook when Chavez came into power and Venezuelans defended him saying he was going to change things. I told them exactly what would happen, and they told me I didn't know shit because I don't live there.  I know I'll be downvoted and I don't give a shit. I want my "I told you so" moment. Maybe some of them will see this.  And yes, we are in a similar boat in the US. My fellow Americans had to find out the hard way too. Let's see if we learn our lesson this time too.
-6
some_black_water Apr 18, 2026 +21
Not disagreeing with you, but did you travel in time? Chavez came into power in the 90s. Facebook was founded in 2004.
21
ioannsukhariev Apr 18, 2026 +7
also acting like you could use facebook as a general forum in its early days is hilarious. i'm sure there were many english speaking venezuelans debating politics on the internet 20 years ago.

On a side note, plenty of overseas Iranians are also dreaming of a similar utopia. I would not have believed any of the stuff online, had I not personally known one such Iranian.
1
Bakedfresh420 Apr 18, 2026
There’s a reason they’re using the term Purge, like Stalin she’s just asserting her power and solidifying her control, especially with Maduro not dead.
