Hungary calling Russia a security challenge while still keeping it as a partner is basically the whole balancing act in one sentence. The more interesting part is whether they actually stop using EU vetoes as leverage. That would be a real shift.

Orban himself lifted the veto for the Ukraine loan during his last days in office.

To earn some bonus points with the new administration probably. That doesn't mean that the new administration can't or won't block new resolutions designed against Russia. They most likely won't, but who even knows

He lifted is so negotiations for EU money start from a worse position for Tisza nothing else.

etplayer03 May 11, 2026 +2
Sounds logical as well. Could still imagine it's to earn some bonus points for his likely prosecution

At worst he will flee to the US, and this "gesture" does not help in that case for him, Orbán wants to rule over Hungary no matter what happens to the country he did this only to worsen the negotiation position for EU money thats all.

Orbán has a negative balance of points with the new administration.

They will. Orbán was Putin's lapdog. Magyar is not. He is very pro-EU and pro-NATO. He also visited Ukraine and Bucha in particular, which left a deep impression on him. He is a good person who loves his country and he shares the thousand year old vision of our first king, Saint Stephen: Hungary belongs to the West, to Europe and not to Asia.

Hungary is completely dependent on Russia for energy, fully decoupling in a way that doesn't destroy the country will be a years-, possibly decades-long process.

They already have!

Since our oil refinery in Százhalombatta is made specifically for Russian crude oil we don't really have a choice. You can't change everything overnight. Also the foreign minister knows what she is talking about, she wrote the book titled **Power, Energy, and the New Russian Imperialism**

Yeah, they want c**** Russian oil, shocker.

Other landlocked countries have been able to wean off the Russian supply, no excuse

MareC0gnitum May 11, 2026 +33
Yes, but not immediately. Please do not forget that he has to repair 16 years of Orbán and 37 years of post-Communist corruption. We can't cut our main oil and gas supply right now, just because Orbán is out of the picture.

I don't think I understand your point. "Wean off" implies it takes time, but you're saying that they should end the partnership immediately?
13
Remote-Regular-990 May 11, 2026 +1
What the FM says implies there isn't the will to end the dependency on the pipeline and that they want to continue "the partnership". What else would that mean? It's definitely not the only option for Hungary edit: Czechia for example cut off the dependency on the same pipeline more than a year ago

I get what you're saying now. But it seems like she does want to end the dependency, just not cut ties entirely yet. I could see why it doesnt read that like. But this sounds like the right direction to me: “Russia will remain a partner but the relationship cannot be based on a one-sided dependency.” Separating from Russia is one of the major defining goals of this new leadership though right? Hopefully that means this is actually a step toward truly separating.

NOPE! :) Ending the dependency does not mean ending the partnership, and continuing the partnership does not mean staying dependent!

Not our problem, sorryyyy!

Hungarian here. Orbán's government has made it impossible for Hungary to abandon Russian gas and oil for the next few years at least. We simply have no other sources for these two very important resources. You can't realistically expect our country to immediately cut our main oil supply just because Orbán is out of the picture. Magyar is pro-EU, pro-NATO and has good relations with Zelensky. But we need to maintain a pragmatic diplomatic relation with Russia until we can diversify our supply lines.

Friendly_Soil6617 May 11, 2026 +8
Thanks for the explanation. But I remember the European Commission saying that there is plenty of oil in the EU and that Hungary and Slovakia could quite easily stop relying on Russian oil. That was about six months or a year ago. Of course, it would be more expensive that way. But I’m sure the russians will raise their prices on you anyway. They always use their oil and gas as a weapon.

Urals and Brent crude need different tehnologies to refine. Hungary is only set up to process Urals, ie Russian oil in sufficient quantities for the time being. Hopefully not for much longer.
10
Justintime4u2bu1 May 11, 2026 +3
Then when Russia increases the price, Hungary can go to the EU, the invisible hand of the market at work.
3
MareC0gnitum May 11, 2026 +4
And how will that oil and gas in the EU will reach Hungary? There are no pipelines to transport the resources and Hungary has no seaports. This is more complicated than it seems, we cannot rush this. Magyar has no love for Russia or Putin, but we can't support our economy without their oil and gas right now. The new Energy Minister, István Kapitány said that one of his top priorities will be to diversify our supply sources so we are not reliant on a single provider. But that will take time.

Friendly_Soil6617 May 12, 2026 +3
Well, it’s understandable that after so many years under Orbán’s mafia-like regime, people have high expectations for Hungary. I wish Hungary and the Hungarian people every success, and let’s hope for the best.

Thank you! We are still getting used to the fact that Orbán is not the PM anymore. Honestly, I still can't believe it. It is like waking up from a vivid nightmare. Magyar's government will be formed officially on Wednesday and then the real heavynliftimg can start. We are all expecting at least three things in the first 100 days: - normalize relations with the EU and its members and with Ukraine - fulfill all the legislative conditions set by the EU so we can finally receive the EU funds that were held back because of Orbán - investigating all oligarchs, propagandists and corrupt politicians from the past 20 years and holding everyone accountable who was responsible for Orbán's abuse of power This is the bare minimum we are expecting right now and this was all promised by Magyar. The new government is comprised of the best Hungary can offer. István Kapitány, the Energy Minister was the global vice CEO of Shell, Anita Orbán, the foreign minister was a top diplomat, Zsolt Hegedűs, the Health Minister is a an internationally renown orthopedic surgeon. This is a historic opportunity for Hungary.

If they don't wean off Russia, they will learn the hard way unfortunately

zizou00 May 11, 2026 +13
It has been literally 2 days. He's not blowing up his country's fuel security day 2 of being in office, that'd be chaos.

Ok-Anxiety8171 May 11, 2026 -4
Do they have Russia near their borders? No, they won't learn. At least from their words, it seems they want to become the India of the EU

dead97531 May 11, 2026 +6
No we don't want to be "India of the EU" Since our oil refinery in Százhalombatta is made specifically for Russian crude oil we don't really have a choice. You can't change everything overnight. Also the foreign minister knows what she is talking about, she wrote the book titled **Power, Energy, and the New Russian Imperialism**

you all have no problem supporting pakistan when it tries to invade India or conducts terror attacks and bomblasts but India is supposed to bend over backwards for your cause that even you cant follow since eww is one of the biggest consumers of russian oil and gas

Well, the world is still dealing with the US, despite the threat it clearly poses to everyone, even penguins.

Wait, did you expect that everything can do a heel turn overnight? I'm glad if TISZA government will be close to undoing Orbán's 16 years shitshow by the end of their term. The term which officially began 2 hours and 22 minutes ago.
