This revival does the impossible: it’s effortlessly funny and refreshing, and Bryan Cranston’s performance is unmissable. They have to make more

I looooove how good Frankie Muniz still is at being so expressive, his faces are comedy gold

I think more than anything they really nailed the writing for the characters! The quesadilla cutaway is 100% something that would have fit into the original.

How he was pulling at his car door in the first episode had me dead.

It’s definitely a fan service revival. Most of it was Easter eggs for people who grew up with it. The OG is one of my favorite shows and I enjoyed it — kind of like going to an actual reunion with lots of old friends — it was charming to catch up but I probably won’t see them again. I’ve seen a lot of critique that it was “too woke” and a victim of the “the Hollywood diversity agenda”. I find these comments so fascinating, given the original had very sweet and funny portrayals of gay characters and plenty of diversity… I mean my god, Malcolm’s best friend is a black, disabled kid in a wheelchair and no one had a problem with “forced diversity” then. I wonder if the people crying about the “woke agenda” in the revival will realize that the show didn’t become more inclusive — it always was — they’ve just grown up to be less tolerant, hateful people.

CockAssed Apr 11, 2026 +144
Every single one of Hal’s friends are black lmao.
144
TheJuliettest Apr 11, 2026 +96
Reese’s best friend is a lesbian, Eric has two dads, Francis’ wife is First Nations - not to mention all the episodes they have about sex, gender, racism, classism, etc. Actually my biggest complaint with the revival is if they were going to have anyone be gay, it should have been Reese - I feel like they hinted he was the entire show.
96
Punchy_flannels8 Apr 11, 2026 +32
The same Reese who tried to get with Cynthia and hated Malcolm’s guts when he stole his girlfriend? Reese being gay would have literally made no sense because we see Malcolm freak out when Cynthia got a bigger chest because he knew what Reese would do and Reese literally tried to go for Cynthia.

welchplug Apr 12, 2026 +20
He should have discovered that he was bi. Dudes obviously a freak.

Just wanna come here and say bi people are freaky, and that's a fact.
5
Motor-Platform-200 Apr 11, 2026 +18
nah making Stevie gay makes the most sense because his actor is flamboyantly gay IRL
18
-BrainMelter- Apr 14, 2026 +4
Actually self inserting an actors personality traits is a bad thing and ruins characters. Its why its called "Acting". Neil Patrick Harris is a perfect example of doing it right.
4
icypioneer Apr 17, 2026 +5
It's not a self insert, it's the writers incorporating the natural strengths of the actor into the character. You get that from Boy Meets World, Star Trek, etc. It's called good writing. Glad to help.
5
Mode-se7en Apr 11, 2026 +124
The non binary thing makes perfect sense from a humour perspective. They’ve been waiting years to finally get a girl and then just when they think they had one, they didn’t. I thought that was brilliant.
124
AxlLight Apr 11, 2026 +44
Yeah, I thought it was the perfect most sensical move and Kelly is honestly such a perfect fit in the cast and the family and their entire relationship with Reese just felt perfectly in place, like it was always there. A great sub IMO for Dewey.
44
Mode-se7en Apr 11, 2026 +8
100%, both her and Leah fit perfectly. My wife and I did wonder if Leah’s name was a nod to the That 90’s Show reboot but it turns out it’s spelt differently so we’re probably thinking too deeply. 🤣

This and scrubs are just proof that the right actors, concept, and writers make all the difference.
445
Dakzoo Apr 10, 2026 +155
The scrubs revival was not something I was excited for. I loved the original and expected the normal retread revival we gotten from so many other shows. But it’s been great. Hearing Malcom is just as good is just so much good news.
155
Wolfram_And_Hart Apr 10, 2026 +54
I’ve honestly not laughed that hard and earnestly in months maybe years.
54
chatapokai Apr 14, 2026 +8
Late to the party, but I lost it when Kelly reveals what Reese was doing when "hanging out" with Hal. Like for one, I did not see that coming, second, it's TOTALLY in line with what the character would have done.
8
According_Camp_4232 Apr 11, 2026 +8
Yooo same here the way i laughed felt like i was watch the original all over again
8
Quixotic_Seal Apr 10, 2026 +16
After that zombie season, I don’t think many people really expected Scrubs to be worthwhile. Give how primed just about everyone was to hate it, the fact it’s garnering praise at all is honestly a testament to how well it’s done.
16
Elpsyth Apr 10, 2026 +10
If they had marketed that season like anything but scrubs, it would have worked. Expectations were too much. They could have done a cougar town and put it in the same universe.
10
FULLsanwhich15 Apr 11, 2026 +5
I watched the “9th” season recently. Going in knowing what to expect and remembering that it’s a spinoff with the same name, it’s honestly enjoyable. I hated it on first watch but I was also expecting Scrubs not Med School.
5
Scoteee Apr 11, 2026 +6
Most recent episode might be one of my favorite emotional ones ever, capitalized on the JD Cox relationship so well and shows how theyve grown as friends and in trust.
6
veilchenblau_39 Apr 10, 2026 +13
Wasn't the will and grace reboot not bad too?  The old sitcoms seem passe because they are old, but it's fun to see that it really is the talent (and not tastes at the time) that make them great.
13
ehtw376 Apr 10, 2026 +7
I wasn’t a big fan of it, but it was worth it alone to see Nick Offerman with Karen… his wife lol. Just like it was in Parks and Rec.
7
SharkFart86 Apr 10, 2026 +7
It wasn’t spectacular but it was way better than most revivals. They at least understood for the most part what worked and why people liked the original. The Frasier revival on the other hand was just bad, which is sad because the original show was so good.

bjorn2bwild Apr 10, 2026 +9

FourEyesAndThighs Apr 10, 2026 +853
I just finished it, and enjoyed it immensely. Some random who definitely never watched the original wrote the review for Variety and it was not kind.
853
No-Simple6306 Apr 10, 2026 +43
So did I, and it really felt like the original. People saying about “nobody wants to see grown adults act like kids” should actually watch it bc that’s the point that they’re each called out for it by the people around them but that’s how it’s always been. Also, clearly they’ve never had their siblings come home when they’re 30 and revert back to being a teenager again, that’s how most people actually are. I loved it!
43
JosssavedmyLife1990 Apr 12, 2026 +8
I just finished watching all 4 episodes and I loved how they wrote all 5 siblings. Jamie's actor was oddly endearing (and what's more is that I could actually picture the actor who played the toddler version to grow up and look like adult Jamie). The way that Christopher Masterson easily jumped back into the role of Francis was awesome. Kelly fit in perfectly. I'm still trying to make up my mind about the actor for Dewey. I don't think anyone could have done it as well as Erik Per Sullivan, but I respect that he didn't want to come back. Bryan Cranston is what really made it special for me. I loved seeing everyone on screen again, but he's a master at his craft and seeing him as Hal again after watching so many of his dramatic roles was just so amazing.
8
No-Simple6306 Apr 12, 2026 +6
Yes!!! I really liked what they did with Dewey personally, characteristically it’s on point and how I’d see him acting grown up, also I think keeping him on a video call was also enough that it didn’t overwrite Erik’s portrayal in the original. Everybody’s arcs and characters were so so on point especially the Krelborn’s lmaoo
6
Icy_Employ4522 Apr 10, 2026 +462
The variety review said it felt like a nostalgia special revival catering to fans of the OG… which Life’s still unfair legit said this is what the new episodes are it never hid that and fans were ok with it. It basically pointed out something we all already knew and criticized it for being what it marketed itself to be. It’s a bunch of word salad nothing review before the series even came out 🙄
462
duaneap Apr 10, 2026 +311
It’s a 25 year old sitcom that ran for like 150 episodes, who else was it going to be for other than the old fans?
311
Lil_Quip Apr 10, 2026 +76
I bet their is a huge part of the audience that only really associate Cranston with Walter White. The juxtaposition between Hal and White is intrguing.
76
berfthegryphon Apr 10, 2026 +22
>audience that only really associate Cranston with Walter White I associate Cranston with all the Power Ranger villains he voiced
22
_CherrySteak_ Apr 10, 2026 +42
Which is ironic because when he was cast as Walter, some people thought he wouldn't be able to pull such a serious role off.

Episode 3 or 4 kind of has that with “Evil Hal”
5
shady8x Apr 10, 2026 +6
Knowing how Hollywood likes to operate? There was a pretty good chance they would make huge changes to attract a younger audience no matter how much it pissed of all the old fans... and then the old fans would refuse to watch it and no one else would care. So glad that didn't happen with this one.
6
TwoDiamondsInMyHands Apr 10, 2026 +63
Why u have to say the show is 25 years old, I didn’t need that negativity today lol
63
drawnverybadly Apr 10, 2026 +12
Lol I still remember watching the season premier live, I thought it was a perfectly fine sitcom until the final scene where the bully accidentally hits Stevie in the wheelchair, that's when I knew we had something special 😂
12
son_of_atlantis Apr 11, 2026 +6
"That doesn't solve everything, Stevie!" The way he tipped over his wheelchair after Tristan turned down Malcolm's proposal was hilarious.

It’s also a limited run revival. It’s not like they have to pull in new people for a new series run. This could only have been for fans.
5
[deleted] Apr 10, 2026 +22
I grew up with the show. Watched it every day as a teenager. The whole connection I had with this show is why I got into Breaking Bad in the first place. "Hey look, its Hal, this show should be good..." I couldnt believe how seamless the revival felt. It was great. I laughed out loud several times at the end of the first episode. They were all 100% back in character, nothing phoned in. Cranston especially, damn that guy is good.
22
ShupGlitto Apr 10, 2026 +13
Conversely, the Scrubs revival works regardless of whether you've watched the original 8 (canonical) seasons.
13
grahamulax Apr 10, 2026 +6
I’ve been scared to slap that one on
6
FeloniousStunk Apr 10, 2026 +7

7
Zoombini22 Apr 10, 2026 +54
Increasingly in this age of remakes, reboots, and revivals I think its ok for some reviewers to not accept the premise of something on face value. Like, no, you do not have to accept the idea of a Moana remake in order to be "unbiased"... it is reasonable for your review to evaluate or criticize the concept as well as the end result. I think this is no problem if you look at reviews as art analysis rather than a product recommendation machine. What you would want from the machine is consistent criteria that maps neatly onto your own preferences. What you want from human art analysis is about someone who acknowledges their own perspective ("bias") and speaks clearly from that perspective. I think its totally ok to have differing reviews from those who are welcoming of a nostalgia-heavy piece of art and from those who are fresh to the series, or a skeptic.
54
coatimundos Apr 10, 2026 +49
I don’t think the Moana remake of literally the same story less than 10 years after the original story is equivalent to a show continuing after 20 years with a new story.
49
ShupGlitto Apr 10, 2026 +15
OK, fine. Then use one of these other examples: * The Brady Bunch * The Love Boat * Punky Brewster * Night Court * Full House * Kids in the Hall * Roseanne * Red Dwarf * Murphy Brown * Mystery Science Theater 3000 * Saved by the Bell * Mad About You * Frasier * Boy Meets World * Mr. Show with Bob and David * Mad TV * Sex and the City * Will & Grace * That ’70s Show * Whose Line Is It Anyway? * The Brothers García * Scrubs * Reno 911! * That’s So Raven * Arrested Development * Corner Gas * The Comeback * iCarly * Party Down All of them received revivals.

9
hstheay Apr 10, 2026 +6
One last thing…
6
Zoombini22 Apr 10, 2026 +27
I agree, but that wasn't my point at all. My point was that its ok for reviewers to have opinions about the premise of a work and whether it should have been made or not. Moana is just an extreme example where most people reject the premise.
27
No-Simple6306 Apr 10, 2026 +4
Variety was bigoted towards Sinners so I feel like this was inevitable from them towards this show from the start
4
BroughtBagLunchSmart Apr 10, 2026 +6
We just finished the first episode. Solid the whole time and then the last 5 minutes are hysterical.
6
Difficult_Mix_3620 Apr 10, 2026 +66
I just binge watched it all and it is absolutely amazing. If they were to do a full revival, I think it may be the only show that could completely capture its old magic.
66
Quixotic_Seal Apr 10, 2026 +12
Eh, there have absolutely been revivals that recaptured the spark of the original run. MST3K’s various revivals have been great and hell, Scrubs is airing right now and is being widely complimented for genuinely feeling like just a new season. But the elephant in the room with successful revivals has to be Doctor Who. The revival in 2005 spawned 10 seasons of television that are widely loved by fans before the quality began to slide; and even then it’s now one of the longest running Sci-Fi shows in history and considered a cornerstone for the BBC. It was so successful, that I think for many it doesn’t even really register that it *was* a revival.
12
Icy_Contact4325 Apr 10, 2026 +288
4 episodes just wasn’t enough
288
Rryann Apr 10, 2026 +180
I think it was just enough. Don’t get me wrong, it was so good. I’d love to see 20 more episodes of it, at the same quality. But no one can say it overstayed its welcome. That being said, I hope this leads to a spinoff series. It kind of seems like they set it up a bit with Malcolm’s daughter.
180
bendy_rabbit Apr 10, 2026 +47
They should go the Psych route and just do movies or specials every couple of years
47
WishAbedWasBatman Apr 12, 2026 +5
That is an excellent idea!!
5
No-Simple6306 Apr 10, 2026 +56
Malcolm’s daughter worked really well, >!I was concerned when she start to have fourth wall break too !< but it actually made it even better
56
ProphetPenguin Apr 10, 2026 +33
Yeah frankly I could get down with just Leah and maybe Kelly's exploits with the other members of the family popping in and out intermittently.
33
JimothyJollyphant Apr 10, 2026 +6
Make it a modern answer to Freaks & Geeks within the Malcolmverse
6
Traditional-Money851 Apr 10, 2026 +5
They did a good job with casting Leah. She could pass as Frankie’s actual daughter. And she nailed his mannerisms
5
CreativeFraud Apr 10, 2026 +48
It's only 4 episodes?! Dang
48
atwistedsmile Apr 10, 2026 +85
My understanding is that they wanted to do it as a movie but were told that it would work better as a mini series on streaming. So it's essentially a 2 hour movie, that was then split into 4 episodes. I've not had chance to watch it yet myself to confirm for definite though.
85
AndNowAStoryAboutMe Apr 10, 2026 +34
Oh, that's definitely what it was. But the placement of the stops and starts are weirdly perfect.
34
Devil-Hunter-Jax Apr 10, 2026 +5
Yup, that's what Frankie Muniz has said in interviews that I've watched him doing.
5
NoirPochette Apr 10, 2026 +508
I watched it. It felt just like a continuation in the same spirit. Kind of wish there was more.
508
thefalseidol Apr 10, 2026 +198
That's how you keep the magic though. It's bittersweet but if they set out to make 24 more episodes it wouldn't have the juice
198
FixedFun1 Apr 10, 2026 +111
Watching it, I can say they are setting it up for more episodes. But if this is all we get then I'm fine. Though we still need more Walter White dreams of Hal.
111
Phoam_ Apr 10, 2026 +47
Frankie Muniz said it never was something to "test the waters" but was supposed to be a one and done movie which then turned into a 4 episodes show.
47
Afraid-Department-35 Apr 11, 2026 +7
The director Linwood said the same thing, he has not intentions of making anymore episodes. Aside from not having the desire to make more he also mentioned it was hell to get everyone scheduled because of Frankie and Bryan, they both have a bunch of stuff in the works and finding time to make a full fledged season just doesn’t seem like its possible.
7
Phoam_ Apr 11, 2026 +6
Yeah Frankie mentionned having a really tight schedule between racing and filming on the Inside of You podcast. Best case scenario would be a show focused on Leah and having the OG cast be part of specific episodes the way characters like Ida or Richie were, but as the dad it would be weird for Frankie to not be heavily involved, and that would probably mean pausing his racing career for that and judging by how he considers himself way more of a racer than an actor, I highly doubt it’s in his plans
6
Pump_and_Magdump Apr 10, 2026 +44
Yeah, I'm hoping this gets taken as a proof of concept that leads to a full new season at least. But these four episodes are held a lot better than nothing. I want more but I have no reason to complain if I don't get more.
44
ImpossibleGuardian Apr 10, 2026 +30
Or they could do a miniseries every few years set around different family events or holidays. Probably a lot easier to write and film - I think they filmed the new one in about a month. Only thing is you might miss out a bit on the general slice of life episodes which were a big part of the original.
30
Pump_and_Magdump Apr 10, 2026 +7
Yeah, that works good too. Either way I'm just glad to have more.
7
ImpossibleGuardian Apr 10, 2026 +5
Likewise - they've done a great job recapturing the tone of the original despite how long it's been.
5
Stormblessed_Photog Apr 10, 2026 +6
I have to agree. I'd be okay if this is all we got, but I'd be shocked if we didn't get more just because of how much focus they put on developing Leah and Kelly's characters.
6
CygnusSong Apr 10, 2026 +16
I’ve been enjoying the Scrubs revival for the same reason. It’s a good thing when the people making a revival understand and respect the reasons why the original was beloved
16
joecb91 Apr 10, 2026 +8
The reboot for King of the Hill fits here too
8
BadPumpkin87 Apr 10, 2026 +48
Binged all 4 episodes and I want more. Would love it if they turned this into a full on series again. The only thing that really seemed off was Dewey not being physically present and through the laptop. Weird that they gave him a pass for being too busy but ripped into Malcolm for dodging them.
48
bendy_rabbit Apr 10, 2026 +44
It felt like they clearly wrote it so the original actor could do it and not be on set but he still said no. I thought the new Dewey was still great but if they had to get a new actor they should have had him be in person some
44
Bubba1234562 Apr 11, 2026 +13
Nah Dewey tried despite being busy. Malcom went essentially no contact
13
JenovaCelestia Apr 11, 2026 +11
Dewey was actually attempting to still be in his family’s orbit *despite* work. But Malcolm made every attempt to do the exact opposite. Plus, it was hinted/stated that Dewey *does* show up in person when he can whereas Malcolm legit just never did.
11
WzrdKelly10 Apr 10, 2026 +93
Just sped through those 4 episodes and I loved it. They did a great job of giving us the evolution of all these characters 20 years later while still giving every single quality piece of nostalgia from the original show. There’s a good bit of self reflective emotional beats but it doesn’t take away from the comedy at all. SPOILER: They kinda ended it with a hint of maybe there could be a full reboot and I really need that.
93
DamageOdd3078 Apr 10, 2026 +27
Yes! It made me so excited! The new additions were great. Leah and Kelly are so perfect for the family.
27
dagobahs Apr 10, 2026 +37
Leah breaking the fourth wall like Malcolm is so awesome.
37
RedofPaw Apr 10, 2026 +137
First Scrubs, now this? What other comedy series could return?
137
Radical_Unicorn Apr 10, 2026 +36
My Name is Earl needs a proper conclusion. I know the show’s creator has since shared online how it ended, but if they are going around reviving shows, it would be a great opportunity to actually see it.
36
MasterLawlzReborn Apr 11, 2026 +5
I'd love for that to happen but I don't think it had the broad appeal that Malcolm or Scrubs had to get the funding for it

Idk why I was ever scared of it not being good. Mike Judge is a S tier when it comes to his projects. The Beavis and Butthead show revival was awesome

It's fantastic! I'm surprised how well they captured the vibe of the original. Honestly almost feels like the show never ended Even the new characters are great and the Gen Z characters have never felt like a parody or overwrought

I had to take a moment on the couch to compose myself after that episode. It was phenomenal. I hope John C. McGliney gets some recognition for his performance on that episode.

The Scrubs revival does a great job of capturing the vibe of the original series.  It genuinely feels like just another season of the show. I do miss the absent old characters and it did take a few episodes, but the new characters are growing on me.

splitcroof92 Apr 10, 2026 +5
Scrubs episode 1 and 2 are gut punching and amazing. After that it's more silly again. But overall it literally feels like they never stopped. It's the exact same amazing tone of the previous seasons.

Quixotic_Seal Apr 10, 2026 +5
It’s quite good, yes. It does have some rough spots, I found the couple of episodes after the two-part premiere to be middling and it took a bit to warm up to the interns, but it picked up and the last two IMO are up there with some of the strongest entries of the original IMO(complete with some heartbreaking moments). The chemistry between the old cast is still very much there and the heart of the show, and the writing is solid. There hasn’t been a single point where it felt like anything but a legitimate and worthwhile continuation of the series, and I can only hope for another season.

It is expertly written with real consideration of adult themes. I'm on the last episode and I'm honestly blown away by how dense it is. Still thinking about, "Don't unpack it, burn it" being used as a throwaway line. My god.

chrosTV Apr 10, 2026 +34
Absolutely, I'm actually confused by some people claiming it's just c**** nostalgia, it really tries to do something meaningful with the growth of its characters.

AndNowAStoryAboutMe Apr 10, 2026 +21
Saving the "Am I wrong?" Schpiel for the ending was smart. It's such an empathy moment that I think it will dodge the Anti-Woke bullshit. But time will tell.
21
Gasparde Apr 10, 2026 +21
If this kind of representation is still considered woke, then there's absolutely no winning these people over anymore - it's truly simply existing that's the enemy for these people then.

Nothing can escape the anti-woke brigade. They need their outrage for their grift.

It was a lot more emotional than I expected. I actually started to tear up a bit during Hal's video tribute.

Impressed how well they integrated the new sibling and we didn’t see much of Jamie but he had a distinct energy that I think worked. I could’ve used more Dewey but I think he was used well

SpaceEdgesBestfriend Apr 10, 2026 +36
It felt like a four episode pilot for a reboot - and I’m sold. the actor who plays Kelly is a scene stealer, both the Kelly and Jamie additions are compelling. Malcom’s daughter, his girlfriend and even the Cooper character all have insane growth potential. All of the dynamics are still fantastic and blend seamlessly with the new characters. Especially the Kelly / Reese dynamic, the idea that Reese finally met his match is great. It’s laugh out loud funny, engaging and heartwarming without losing any of the spirit of the original. Entire cast, including the supporting characters are on point. Dewey’s actor swap was also seamless. All I could think while watching this was “send this pilot to series immediately” I could watch another 6 season run of this version. Literally no reason to stop at 4 episodes unless the cast isn’t game because the audience will be.

Ashamann2 Apr 11, 2026 +11
I could see a spinoff being possible, but it doesn't seem like most of the actors want to return to it in that capacity. Even the filming for this series had to work around Muniz's Nascar schedule and combined with Cranston's continued popularity is probably the practical reason they're only really in the same scene twice.
11
Icy_Gold3994 Apr 11, 2026 +5
I’m also sold. I would watch the new series if they keep the quality, cast, witty writing and humor of this reboot. I hope Hulu sees that there are various people interested in seeing more of this!
5
Bonzai_Tree Apr 10, 2026 +14
I love to see it. My wife had never seen the OG show so we've been watching it together. It holds up phenomenally well. Glad to hear that the spinoff/remake is good so that we can watch it when we're done.

typehyDro Apr 10, 2026 +12
I’m not surprised, it brings back that nostalgia… same with Scrubs and King of the Hill… imagine they did Seinfeld when they get released from prison
12

I saw a recent video of the cast all together talking about different scenes, favorite episodes, it seemed more like a family remembering good times rather than a cast of actors working on a project. They loved being with eachother that's what made the show great

A show has never made me cry and laugh in the same scene like this has. This was a masterpiece of comedy. My inner child is definitely happy - I didn’t know it going in, but I really needed to watch and hear some of the things.

I'm watching it now. Watched the original and loved it. This feels like a natural continuation in the best way. They've nailed it. This and Scrubs prove that with the right people and motivation a revival can work.

Im watching now & Im loving every second of it!!! Love all the characters. Lois & Hal are aged like fine wine such Babes!! I am only on second episode & praying a season 2 comes out lol 😆 🙏

SkyShark03191 Apr 10, 2026 +7
It was alright. Felt like they were trying to cram too much in but Lois and Malcolm’s talk more than made up for the finale back in the day. I really enjoyed that. Kelly was awesome, able to tangle with Reese being the youngest shows a badass lol. Stevie… that was unexpected haha. Still, it was great seeing everyone again and having a proper send off to those who aren’t with us anymore was excellent.

disgaea36 Apr 10, 2026 +6
Loved seeing so many cast members returning and seeing the baby siblings all grown up bringing rhay same family dynamic charm to the screen. I hope we get more but happy we got anything. Now if they could only release the dang series on blu ray or dvd for us 😤.  Also found it hilarious that dewy went from having an egg to being this like playboy over seas haha

It was very well done, Malcolm being mentally pent up and spinning this whole lie was just as insane and in character as I expected. It also reinforced something that's been in my head since forever, Bryan Cranston is an absolute monster of an actor, what a fuckin talent. Also I liked how well Jamie and Kelly were done, both of their personalities made sense.
6
Affectionate-Race105 Apr 10, 2026 +4
It felt refreshing watching this. I had little expectations but the chemistry among the cast was still there.. praying for a continuance tbh. Has the potential to be the best in these dark tv times.

Excellent_Hope8134 Apr 10, 2026 +4
I just finished it. I wished it was maybe 6-7 episodes, but it was fun to see everyone again. Such great memories and laughs watching the original series. It was also slightly depressing because I’m the same age as Malcolm/ Frankie and the rest of the core siblings and everyone looked so old with gray hair (but they looked good) and I look like I’m in my late 20’s with no gray hair. Any way my point is that it made me realize “damn I’m old now” but it a very good and fortunate way! If you’ve never seen the original series then I suggest you watch it. It hits different watching as late 30’s adult now. Great reunion series

The non-binary sibling is such a good addition to the cast. They have a fun antagonism with the brothers and their big monologue in the final episode was beautiful.

JessePinkmanHairySex Apr 10, 2026 +11
I liked, and Leah was a good character. But I think Dewey, Jamie, and the other daughter was kinda meh. Don't get me wrong, I know we can't get the same y2k punk vibes from the 2000's today, but somehow it felt like too much gen z for me. I don't know, maybe it's just too colorful or perfect... like a netflix show. Anyways, it was good.
11
JamJarre Apr 10, 2026 +15
Yeah that's a thing that I wish they'd addressed - the new glossy look for everything. Money issues were always such a big deal for the family and it was refreshing in a world of sitcom families living in mansions.  I guess maybe things were better now that Dewey was rich but I wished they'd even given some lip service to it. Even if he was giving them money they had to raise Jamie and Kelly from babies to adults which is not c****.  Lois throwing all that money at a party? The house being immaculate and having a ton of money for DIY projects? Lois not working double shifts at the Lucky Aide? That part just didn't feel right. It felt very Netflix shiny
15
MasterLawlzReborn Apr 11, 2026 +11
To be fair, they no longer have a ton of kids in the house so them keeping the place cleaner and having more money didn't seem too weird to me
11
lucylucylove Apr 11, 2026 +3
Exactly hahaha they only have one kid at home now. Waaaaay cheaper and cleaner
3
WishAbedWasBatman Apr 12, 2026 +6
I thought it was hilarious to see how nice their house was when they finally had 0 boys in it. Like proof that those boys were terrorists and once they were gone, Lois and Hal finally had the time, energy, and money for nice things. I clocked that right away and my partner and I were both cracking up after we saw how beautiful the house was.

iliandroid Apr 14, 2026 +3
I came away from the show feeling genuinely let down, which is saying a lot considering *Malcolm in the Middle* has always been my favorite comedy series of all time. Right off the bat, the most glaring issue is the push toward modern political messaging. It feels unnecessary and out of place. It’s hard to imagine this approach attracting new viewers - the show is short, slow, and not particularly engaging - and it’s even harder to believe it would resonate with longtime fans. Instead, it ends up taking away from what originally made the show so enjoyable. Certain character choices were where it really lost me. The inclusion of things like t>!he “non-binary daughter” already!< felt forced, but the direction taken >!with Stevie’s character!< stood out even more. It came across as overdone and distracting, as if multiple ideas were being stacked onto one character without much thought for coherence. On top of that, the plot itself just wasn’t compelling. Stretching such a simple story across four episodes made it drag, and it quickly became tedious. By the third episode, I was only watching out of obligation rather than interest. It simply wasn’t entertaining. The heavy reliance on nostalgia didn’t help either. Instead of feeling like a natural continuation, it felt manufactured. Bringing back old characters seemed more like a checklist than a meaningful decision. For instance, >!having Gretchen or Francis’s former military school classmates show up at Hal and Lois’s anniversary !!Another odd detail was Malcolm’s child. The character’s age didn’t seem to line up at all with the actress or the dialogue, which made it unnecessarily confusing.!< Overall, while there were a few mildly amusing moments, they were far from enough to carry the show. It ended up feeling dull, forced, and inconsistent. For me, it was a huge disappointment, and I wouldn’t recommend these new episodes. If anything, it put a dent in the nostalgia I had for the original.
