They really said it feels like a reunion special instead of a reboot. LIKE THIS IS A REUNION SPECIAL??

Kitchen_Article_699 Apr 9, 2026 +27
Exactly, like… that’s literally the ideal? Just call it a limited reunion event and lean into the chaos for three tight episodes, done.

"This Mario game feels more like a platformer than a turn-based JRPG."

> Composed of just four 30-minute episodes, “Life’s Still Unfair” feels more like a reunion special bursting with cameos than an actual reboot. The complaint is that there is not much substance to the show beyond memberberries.

I think its a perfectly fair criticism, just like saying that its enjoyable despite of that is a valid counterpoint

Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?

During life or death situations urine is necessary, in very small amounts

All this needs to have is fan service and nostalgia. I have a hard time believing anybody who is going to watch this is expecting or wants anything other than that. Not everything has to be prestige television.
16
turbobuddah Apr 10, 2026 +7
In my opinion it was a very well done love letter to the fans and cast

esoteric_plumbus Apr 11, 2026 +5
Idk I mean I never really watched king of the hill until the reboot and that really modernized the show, and I was able to pick off without having known all the nods, it stands alone pretty well. I looked it so much I went back and watched the whole show, and then the reboot again. And I wouldn't describe it as just fan service and nostalgia, like ofc it brought the old stuff back but I thought it actually felt like it's own thing. Like if you took away the nods it would still have substance with the general plot and stuff. I've only seen Malcolm episodes here or there two, so if it leans to heavily on just being "remember this" from the old series then it might come across bland for me since I don't know them. I haven't seen it so obviously that's not my actual opinion, it's just that I do sorta expect it to be more than just nostalgia bait

Kinahant Apr 11, 2026 +2
As a fan, I don’t want a reboot or spin off. The fans it had years ago are obviously a lot older and most of the generation probably don’t care for it other than the reunion which I had been excited about.

People latch onto emotional impact more than logical impact. We can let it drive our thinking, choices, and daily life: which is such a backwards way for society to be. Nowadays: you’ll absolutely get more clicks if you just type “braindead” for a response, instead of giving a thought-out critique of *why* it deserves a bad review.
3
AngelofVerdun Apr 9, 2026 +58
Ain't reading Variety, but...no show is necessary, necessity is not a qualifier for how good or bad something is 🤷‍♂️
58
bfilippe Apr 9, 2026 +13
The subtext underneath "unnecessary" is likely a mid, stale reboot that doesn't justify its existence.
13
notches123 Apr 9, 2026 +5
Fortunately, it doesn't need to justify its existence so these opinions are even more unnecessary.
5
bfilippe Apr 9, 2026
I agree with this sentiment because all the crew get paid. Good for the economy regardless.

TBoarder Apr 9, 2026 +8
The reviews I've seen are *seriously* all over the place. Some are saying that it's comfortable and nostalgic, some are saying it's deeply uncomfortable, some are saying that they came up with a great reason for the return, some are saying it's pointless. I can see reviewers having differing opinions, but this is just weird.

New_Cockroach_505 Apr 10, 2026 +8
I thought it was fantastic and like the show had never stopped. Doesn’t mean it’s flawless, the original show had ups and downs too but it still felt as unhinged and weird and that’s largely what I’ve always loved about it. It’s summed up perfectly by the “previous on” being a montage of just weird shit with no context.
8
AppropriateWin3923 Apr 11, 2026 -1
I hated it. Big fan of the original series. It was weird and kind of depressing. While the actors did a good job, the writing of the characters was off. The plot was nonsense, and the jokes weren’t good. In fact it felt more like it was trying to be a weird drama than the goofy but smart comedy that made the original series popular. I can’t understand how anyone who was a fan of the original would like this.

liftgeekrepeat Apr 11, 2026 +2
Huge fan of the original, thought it was very well done and very funny. Don't overthink it chief
2
AppropriateWin3923 Apr 11, 2026 +1
I’m not overthinking it, pal. In my opinion, it wasn’t funny at all. And the characters, tone of the show, almost nothing matched the original. They massacred my boy.

Oh look another shitty variety article

Hunter042005 Apr 11, 2026
No this one is extremely fair the whole thing was painfully dull with some shitty writing

All TV shows are unnecessary but some are fun to watch. Ain’t reading this dumbass article.

Autumn-Addict Apr 11, 2026 +2
Exactly

Equivalent-Sport163 Apr 10, 2026 +6
Just finished watching it and it was great, still had the laughs, the heartfelt moments and felt just like the show we had 20 years ago, as someone who’s 31 and grew up watching it it was just the kind of episodes I needed
6
the____can Apr 9, 2026 +9
is [variety.com](http://variety.com) necessary? i think its not.
9
AMA_requester Apr 9, 2026 +6
The entire marketing of the series was it was a miniseries reunion, it's not a reboot that's sticking around.
6
turbobuddah Apr 10, 2026 +3
I loved it, Hal stole the show as per usual, but it was one of the better reunion miniseries I've seen
3
Sweaty-End-6774 Apr 9, 2026 +5
I can’t believe so many incompetent people have jobs. It literally is a reunion, this isn’t a reboot. That’s why it feels like that.
5
travio Apr 9, 2026 +7
Are any reboots necessary? They are just nostalgia cash grabs.
7
boomosaur Apr 9, 2026 +6
So this is current journalism eh?
6
No_Homework_1185 Apr 11, 2026 +2
That article is what’s unnecessary; the show was great
2
rahgeenah Apr 11, 2026 +2
I loved this show growing up and I thought the reboot was actually great! Same kind of comedy and shenanigans. Out of all the reboots lately this is successful in my eyes.

Sufficient-Beyond848 Apr 11, 2026 +2
Complaining that you received exactly what was described to you is next level bitching.

I don’t care
6
Akuma_nb Apr 9, 2026 +3
This review was bad but others I read were good. Seems especially popular among actual fans of the show (who it was made it).
3
No-Entertainer-1870 Apr 10, 2026 +1
For whom it was made for yes. Real fans. The show is so good and stuck to its style/roots. Very impressive and entertaining

Danny8806 Apr 9, 2026 +4
Screw these miserable spoiled critics who are clearly dead inside.
4
Chataboutgames Apr 9, 2026 +6
Genuinely unhinged reaction not someone not liking the Malcolm in the Middle reunion lol
6
ElectricPeterTork Apr 9, 2026 +6
They may be overreacting, but let's be fair, critics generally are miserable, spoiled, and clearly dead inside.
6
Chataboutgames Apr 9, 2026 +5
This is honestly so dumb. Critics write positive reviews all the time. It's just that people don't generally piss their pants the way they do when a critic disagrees with them. No one says "proof that critics have a heart!" when a billion of them write positive reviews of Shrinking.
5
Gysus12 Apr 10, 2026 +2
This “review” was a lie I’m on second episode, and this is a continuation of the character we left off at the finale. It’s more Malcolm in the middle and I’m loving it.
2
Historical-Bug-4265 Apr 10, 2026 +1
Thats because it wasn't a reboot and never was....it was always ment to be 4ep to catch up with everyone do that party and thats it....honestly I would love to know more about his kid collage life how his kid changes (in a good way being with the fam) but non of this will happen because it WASNT A REBOOT NOR EVER WAS......now if they done 8 to 12ep looking to score a second then it would be a reboot....but nope jist one of them hey let's all get together do a little reunion and thats al she wrote

queefwellington3 Apr 10, 2026 +1

F***, millennials just can't get enough of their nostalgia media.

Steel_Reserver Apr 12, 2026
You guys have enough goy slop to consume, don’t blame us for trying to bring back a little decent content. They ruined it anyways.

DrumpfPutin2024 Apr 11, 2026 +1
This article is unnecessary
1
Hunter042005 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Which is an extremely fair statement the show felt like a dry lifeless version of the original show focusing on new characters drawing attention away from the original cast it ended up feeling like a pilot to a show we might not even get and just some extremely weird writing decisions

Ok-Chapter-6107 Apr 11, 2026 +1
I dont really care I just enjoyed it, still very stupid but very enjoyable. Hope they make more.
1
Exotic-Management363 Apr 12, 2026 +1
Well! It wasn’t the Bachelor but hey…that’s necessary.
1
MisterFlyer2019 Apr 13, 2026 +1
I just thought it is was not engaging and not funny. I went into it with optimism. I made myself watch the four episodes but I regretted it all the way.
1
AtMeMa Apr 13, 2026 +1
...I liked it. Thought it was funny and that the writers cared about the original. I'd love to see more
1
Chataboutgames Apr 9, 2026 +2
Never in history has a show been “necessary.” Such a stupid criticism.
2
No-Entertainer-1870 Apr 10, 2026 -1
This is genuinely an unhinged comment about critics disliking a show.
-1
jpk613 Apr 10, 2026 -5
I watched the first episode. It’s unnecessary.
-5
LetMeOverThinkThat Apr 10, 2026 +3
I enjoyed it so it’s necessary.
3
Significant-Nerve421 Apr 9, 2026 +1
It's necessary. I don't care lol I'm just happy to see the gang back together but hey I'm just a millennial. I don't even watch TV but I'll be watching this just for the nostalgia.
1
BENDERISGREAT3 Apr 10, 2026 +1
The new characters are going to ruin the serie
1
spmahn Apr 9, 2026
This will end up being just like Mario Galaxy, critics will eviscerate it, fans of the property will love it and say the critics don’t know what they’re talking about. Quite frankly it shouldn’t matter what a critics opinion is, and if a critics opinion impacts your enjoyment of something one way or the other that’s a you problem. What I do take issue with is the tired “It’s meant to be for the fans / it’s made for kids / it’s just a silly comedy, it’s not meant to be Spielberg or The Godfather” argument. Something could be any one of those things while also being good, those two ideas are not mutually exclusive.

I’m 15 minutes into the new season and it’s soooo bad 😭 like so bad
-1
jpk613 Apr 10, 2026 -2
Yeah watched the first episode and it stinks
-2
Steel_Reserver Apr 10, 2026 -2
I was severely disappointed that it was woke. Did they really need to have a non-binary child and then make Stevie gay? If it wasn’t for that, I may be would’ve watched past the first episode, but I was already in annoyed by the non-binary thing that once I saw Stevie, he was gay. I just shut it off. The original show was so good and some of the original fox TV shows, and what made them good was they were a little bit unapologetically funny. Definitely disappointing.
-2
staroyster Apr 11, 2026
Yea it's crazy we can't have anything good today!
0
Steel_Reserver Apr 12, 2026
Yup, they always have to ruin it with the erosion of moral fiber and woke perversion.
0
stangAce20 Apr 11, 2026 -1
I liked it, Brian Cranston was awesome especially in the second episode when he’s “talking to himself” Thought it was a bit predictable with the way Hollywood is these days that they had to make at least one character in the show randomly gay though.
-1
Novel-Locksmith5905 Apr 11, 2026 -1
I've only seen the first episode and don't think I'll be able to finish the rest. The series is one of my favourites of all time. Family is there for eachother, family loves eachother, they get in some trouble, they get mad, there's a simple but fun plot. What was that first episode? That was horrible. This pilot wouldn't be picked up without the nostalgia, and it's not even good at that. Dewey is barely in it, they gave more lines to the daughter who isn't even born during the show than they did to anyone else. Hal is so over acting it hurts. The only character I liked was Rees. I'm so disappointed right now. I've been looking forward to this for months.
