He’s a riddle wrapped in a hamster wheel.

kycolonel Apr 5, 2026 +35
We know how the entertainment industry treats children in the US.
35
hzhrt15 Apr 6, 2026 +2
It’s just as much the parents fault as the industry. Plenty of child actors had normal lives and turned out decent because their parents protected them.

Terrible_Tell3115 Apr 6, 2026 +11
He also probably knew Frankie had gone MAGA.

> In an interview with The Guardian, star Jane Kaczmarek, who played Per Sullivan’s on-screen mother, said the retired actor is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’”

Money isn’t everything
564
Motochenzia Apr 5, 2026 +670
When you have money already.
670
Technical_Heat5215 Apr 5, 2026 +228
That’s the point. He’s got money to make himself comfortable. Doesn’t need anymore.
228
Motochenzia Apr 5, 2026 +98
Yeah but that statement loses it point knowing his rich. Like a male pornstar saying “sex isn’t everything”. Lmfao

dumbass_sempervirens Apr 5, 2026 +74
Money isn't everything, but it sure makes everything easier to get.
74
barbarkbarkov Apr 5, 2026 +49
Money isn’t everything, but it is when you don’t have any.

NotUniqueWorkAccount Apr 5, 2026 +6
Money's the root of all evil, til you have it.

reverend-mayhem Apr 5, 2026 +9
Money isn’t everything, but it’s a lot of everything.
9
Equivalent-Rate-6218 Apr 5, 2026 +6
Money is everything because it doesn't betray you, allows you to enjoy what life has to offer, and can make you feel even better if you decide to donate it to someone in need. It's quite honestly the best happy pill on earth.
6
Rygar201 Apr 5, 2026 +29
No, to him it's work lol
29
MagicHarmony Apr 5, 2026 +9
No it doesn't, he has money and the other actors do as well, do you really think Bryan Cranston needs the money at this point in his career? He does it because he enjoys it, as for the actor who had played Dewey he just prefers to spend his time elsewhere rather than acting.
9
The_Lapsed_Pacifist Apr 5, 2026 +8
Quite right. The money lets people do what they want to do. He doesn’t want to do it, more power to him and by the same token Cranston can pick and choose his roles.
8
simonhunterhawk Apr 5, 2026 +2
Wealthy actors/musicians/etc who worked for their money are some of the only super wealthy people I can get behind because you can see the actual work they put into it. Once you get to billionaire status or exploiting the charts to stay on top of the with new releases to ensure nobody else gets a piece of the pie, then it’s an issue. Why be mad at the guy who sacrificed part of his childhood and gets to live comfortably and do whatever he wants, harming nobody, when we have plenty of people whose names we know actively making everyone else in the country poorer and do nothing about them?
2
Sw4nR0ns0n Apr 5, 2026 +18
I disagree… He has enough wealth to live comfortably and he knows it, he’s not worried about hoarding anymore than he needs good on him.
18
rnobgyn Apr 6, 2026 +1
I think a rich person denying buckets of money QUITE exemplifies “money isn’t everything.” He already has money covered so now is chasing a more fulfilling life. He wants everything, not just money and fame.
1
rednaxthecreature Apr 5, 2026 +2
How do we know he is Rich though? He has left the public eye for decades we don't know shit about him.
2
Daimakku1 Apr 5, 2026 +176
Only people with lots of money could afford to "study Dickens" and not whatever could afford them a livelihood.
176
rlikesbikes Apr 5, 2026 +210
Yes. He earned money when he was a child. Now as an adult he gets to do what he wants. It’s a luxury that we’d all love to have, but he earned it.
210
ClassicT4 Apr 5, 2026 +55
If only all child actors/performers could be so lucky.
55
katikaboom Apr 5, 2026 +28
Yeah, he must have had parents that were more concerned about his future than theirs, that's not the typical experience for child actors. Good for him
28
wrosecrans Apr 5, 2026 +6
Yeah. The hit rate for "enjoys studying Dickens" vs "turned out to be a massive dickhead who enjoys meth" with child stars is pretty bad. For the ones who have a good support system and good instincts to manage the fame, it can be f****** awesome. Kids only work a few hours a day, get most of the fun of being a star without having to worry about paying the bills, etc. And you can pop out of Hollywood at 18 with literally millions of dollars sitting in a bank account that you can retire off of the day you become an adult if it is well managed so it really may not matter if you aren't super qualified to go into the normal workforce and you can pursue whatever you want. For the other probably 2/3 of kids, it's a nightmare. Stage parent puts a ton of stress on the kid, kid is the family breadwinner so paying the bills is on them. Kids get pushed into material they aren't remotely mature enough to handle, and a bunch of the ones who are good at it have super vivid imaginations so their body feels like they are traumatically _living_ the crazy drama scenes they are stuck in over and over again doing a million takes. You turn 18 and your parents have mismanaged the money. The theoretical custodial account went all-in on crypto scams and NFT's so you are 18, you aren't cute any more, and you are broke, and you never went to real school and you are kinda unqualified for normal jobs. We can all think of a couple of young actors who wound up going down that kind of road. For the ones who "make it out," I think it's super easy to imagine they want some distance from the job they had as a little kid, even if it wasn't like traumatic. Ironically, the ones who had the worst time are probably proportionally more likely to stay in acting because it's the only skill on their resume and they don't have other options. When I was in elementary school, I played baseball. One of those things my parents signed me up for. I wasn't any good at it, but just pretend I was magically a superstar 10 year old baseball player and made money at it. How many of us would really want to be stuck playing in the peewee baseball league that our dad signed us up for when we were 10? At age 25? 35? Forever? Eventually most people would want to move one from what they did in elementary school before they had any real agency.
6
Prudent-Pressure2146 Apr 5, 2026 +28
Are we rooting for everyone to have had a bad time? Like what is this
28
jtjstock Apr 5, 2026 +24
I read it as a lament at how many other child actors are robbed by their greedy parents.
24
Prudent-Pressure2146 Apr 5, 2026 +5
It just reads a bit Debbie downer to me. We know how many kids are robbed and by all accounts this is a nice tale of someone who got out. Plus the whole thread is weirdly bitter, stuff like ‘he must be really privileged to study dickens’ etc.
5
jtjstock Apr 5, 2026 +5
Fair points, some of the posters are definitely jealous. And while it does seem nice that he can do as he wishes now, he really did earn it, the whole prospect of child actors seems more like abuse than a career. Let them be.
5
ijoinedtosay Apr 5, 2026 +8
How could that be your conclusion?
8
Prudent-Pressure2146 Apr 5, 2026 +4
It’s just a bizarre non sequitur. By all accounts he had a great time and ducked out while the going was good, and quite right too imo
4
AusGeno Apr 5, 2026 +9
Yes, and the poster wished the same for all child actors.
9
Henry_in_Space Apr 5, 2026 +6
Omg dude quit being so whiny. He’s a f****** adult. He’s allowed to say no. It’s a complete sentence. He’s not into acting anymore and doesn’t owe us shit. Get over it and yourself.
6
Aron_Wolff Apr 5, 2026 +15
nah I broke as shit an studied Dickens.
15
Ok_Insurance_505 Apr 5, 2026 +7

7

3
[deleted] Apr 5, 2026 +10
“study dickens” means a post graduate position not that he’s just reading novels. lots of poor people become researchers and academics
10
DraculasDog Apr 5, 2026 +8
Maybe he’s really studying the effect Dickens had on Lady Franklin and he’s really doing occult studies to find John Franklin’s body?
8
Constant-Sandwich-88 Apr 5, 2026 +9
Maybe the most sane thing a child actor has ever done with f*** you money.
9
ahawk99 Apr 5, 2026 +2
Then write an opera about it
2
here_for_the_lols Apr 5, 2026 +3
I have no concept of how much money a child would have made for multiple seasons on a successful sitcom. Any one have any idea?
3
b15d1ck Apr 5, 2026 +3
child actors on a successful network show like Malcolm in the Middle were earning $10,000–$20,000 per episode in the early seasons, growing to perhaps $30,000–$50,000 by the final seasons.
3
amuday Apr 5, 2026 +16
I played tee-ball as a kid then eventually made it to pitching machine. My baseball career began and ended before I was an adult, much like Erik Per Sullivan’s acting career. If by some miracle I was getting residual little league money, enough to live comfortably and study my interests and they offered me “buckets of money” to uproot my life and start playing baseball again, it’d be an easy no.
16
barbarkbarkov Apr 5, 2026 +2
Only when you already have money… which he does from being in Malcolm in The Middle.
2
xeoron Apr 5, 2026 +1
It does help pay for school
1
p_garnish15 Apr 5, 2026 +3
True, but it’s Harvard. In all likelihood, he’s paying for his degree because he has money; people with out money overwhelmingly go to Harvard for free/extremely favorable fees.
3

True, but it sure is *something*.

The little Dickens really living the dickensian life.
1
Impressive_Ask9978 Apr 6, 2026 +1
Yeah, but he's like 35 and going to school to study 1 writer, bit weird. Seems like an autistic thing.

Studying Dickens orphans is exactly what Dewey should be dewing.
4
MasterOfManyWorlds Apr 5, 2026 +589
I'm happy for him that he is doing what he wants to do, but sad because I always thought Dewey was the best part of the show.
589
PlusSizeRussianModel Apr 5, 2026 +125
The new Dewey seems like perfect casting, at least. It’s one of the few times I’m glad they recast, so that they could keep Dewey instead of writing him off.
125
markydsade Apr 5, 2026 +78
Better to recast than say that Dewey died from a library accident where he was crushed by falling stacks in the Dickens section.
78
MasterOfManyWorlds Apr 5, 2026 +5
Yeah I'm glad they recast as well
5
polish_miracle Apr 5, 2026 +135
I agree, and Hal is a very close second
135
MasterOfManyWorlds Apr 5, 2026 +95
Hal and Dewey building the lego city together is one of the best episodes.
95
heyheyitsandre Apr 5, 2026 +14
The best is when they set up all the dominos and Hal wants to knock them down and Dewey just puts them away without knocking them over lol
14

Hal and Dewey together are gold
12
ontheweed Apr 5, 2026 +1
The character is still on the show
1
beardedweirdoin104 Apr 5, 2026 +319
I’d love for part of the plot of the show to be that Dewey hires a look alike to pose as him for family meetings-and none of his family notices it’s not him.
319
bord_de_lac Apr 5, 2026 +133
Oh my god, this would be an incredible storyline. It gets revealed through a letter from the real Dewey at the end, and then Malcolm absolutely loses his mind because he didn’t think of doing that. Would be completely in line with the tone of the original run.
133
NOT-packers-fan2022 Apr 5, 2026 +35

Nope! [Cranston said he was actively attending](https://ew.com/bryan-cranston-why-erik-per-sullivan-turned-down-malcolm-in-the-middle-revival-11753047) last year. > "He's actually going to Harvard," Cranston explained. I think you guys have to cite stuff that says it’s been 10 years since we cited a current article saying he was there lol
4
frotmonkey Apr 5, 2026 +7
You assume it’s his first? Or that he hasn’t changed majors. I’m sure he has the ability to take his time and deeply learn the material. Everyone learns at a different pace and some, while slower in the start, become some brilliant people because of their focus.
7
ifuckedyourmilkshake Apr 6, 2026 +3
They did say "degrees." If you're going part time a master's could take upwards of 4 years and if you're doing a phd part time during coursework that could take another 3 years before diss writing starts. Seven years of course work plus 3 for quals and diss? Makes sense to me.

Unrelated Just introduced my 13 year old son to Malcom in the middle curious if it'd be too dated for him while explaining "being from a chaotic household with 6 kids I related a lot to Malcom in the middle or Rosanne etc." I've had to rip him away from it several times since. He's been binge watching any free time he has.
43
28DLdiditbetter Apr 5, 2026 +21
Malcolm In The Middle is one of those rare shows from the 2000s that feels absolutely 2000s but at the same time, doesn’t feel dated

2
redditoryoubroughter Apr 5, 2026 +110
Based on all the trailers I've seen, their version of "Dewey" only seems to be included in Zoom calls, so I have a feeling they greatly reduced his character as a consequence of Per Sullivan not returning.
110
Kindly-Tax-4998 Apr 5, 2026 +10
Him and Reese are keying what I assume to be Malcom’s car in the trailer.

All this seems fake and weird. I saw a video on YouTube with them all sitting around watching old clips from the show, it felt very forced ,seems like they have no chemistry now a days. I'll still watch the new show though, hoping for the best. However I still can't look at Christopher Matheson without being reminded of his brother Danny and his crimes.

When I hear stories like this I’m always like good for them. How wonderful it must be to find a comfort and happiness with what you’re doing in life that even loads of money can’t persuade you out of. Edit to say. It’d be nice if more of us didn’t have to worry about money when crafting our lives.

10

I don't see any bitterness. Wait, I searched and found exactly one comment you could categorize as bitter. Is this the thing where you pretend people are thinking one way so that you can sound like the voice of reason for everyone to upvote?
3
DrAlWazzy Apr 6, 2026 +6
Weird that a show this big wouldn’t offer direct deposit as a payment option.

I’m rewatching the series as I didn’t watch it religiously and man it is amazing and he is one of my fave characters.
2
JustASt0nesThrowaway Apr 6, 2026 +2
It would be the most Dewey thing ever if the writers hedged their bets that Erik Sullivan eventually comes around. They could play it off in the early episodes like Dewey was dead. And I mean, Malcolm and his family keep saying he’s dead and what a tragedy it is. Only, they never really explain how Dewey died (also very Dewey). Then, if/when Sullivan does agree to come back as Dewey, the writers have an easy pivot: Dewey shows up to the Malcolm household one Christmas - his wife and two children in tow - and his family is SHOOK. What they had forgotten (because: Dewey) is that Dewey graduated college, got married, had a baby and accepted a job in another state. In other words, Dewey was not in fact dead. Suffice it to say, Malcolm and his family quickly move on, forgetting about the whole ordeal altogether.

“Multi-millionaire chooses not to work” Breathtaking journalism here
5
rjactor24 Apr 5, 2026 +15
Is he really a multi millionaire though? Most of his money he made like 20+ years ago when he was a kid
15
kookdang Apr 5, 2026 +9
He could be through the magic of compound interest if his parents put the money in trust.
9
BrookieMonster504 Apr 5, 2026 +7
With being on a network show with parents that didn't need to spend his money I would think he's pretty set
7
rjactor24 Apr 5, 2026 +7
As long as he had good parents yeah he’s set, but unfortunately a lot of these actors are used and abused by their parents/the system
7
BrookieMonster504 Apr 5, 2026 +6
No his parents were pretty great and obviously kept him as normal as possible
6
Horror_Response_1991 Apr 5, 2026 +3

151 episodes on a worldwide syndicated show before the streaming era? He's doing just fine. The Friend's stars still make $20 million each from residuals. They famously had one of the best deals in TV and a much more popular show, but he's probably been paid out quite a bit.

Stop acting like you know how much he’s worth

That’s fair. When you have the main Star stating he does not even remember filming the show originally, for those that do, perhaps it’s not worth it for them.

Hes cleared that up.... it wasn't concussion or amnesia he just stated he doesn't remember specific scenes bc he was filming alot of things at one time...

Right! And I’m very much looking forward to it again 10-15 years from now concerning this show.

Wait what? Who are you referring to?

When he got older it was clear he wasn’t a great actor 😆 Happens a lot when a child grows up in their role. Carl in The Walking Dead was just terrible

Not everyone relates to familial toxicity in a positive way. I wouldn't come back for that show either.

gotta imagine he or his parents were very financially responsible with his money and whatever royalties he still gets from the original show to where he can afford to not need to take this deal or carry on with acting. that or he really just that adamant about not acting

He was very young when he started acting and it sounds like as he grew up and had a chance to do different things, he realized it wasn’t what he had the most passion for.

He’s still dreaming about that dirt bike he found…. Him with six arms and enjoying the cookie

I dont mind. Recent photos of Eric dont look like Dewey should look. Instead, the new guy they got looks much more like a grown up Dewey.

dude knew what he wanted out of life, and TV wasn't it. Frankly, I can respect that. Dude's happy where he is.
