That's what Mali's government liked about them in the first place

Heartbreaking to see the airport closed and humanitarian planes damaged. This kind of instability only makes it harder for aid to reach the millions of Malians who are already facing a severe food crisis.

Not true at all. The big media is mostly owned by a hand full of people / companies. There is definitely a lot of wagging the dog going on! To start a grass roots movement of interest, or to make things go viral on social media...be the spark!

Its astonishing that at a time when islamic terrorism has been reduced to a shell of itself in the middle east, it's basically on the verge of taking over entire countries in the Sahel. And these juntas have built way too much legitimacy on anti "colonial" nonsense to ask for help like saved the country with Operation Serval.

That's what they wanted after all. F*** 'em. Let them figure their own shit by themselves like they wanted.

Kick out the western French colonizers for their pursuit of economic imperialism based on unfair resource extraction set up by the previous and naturally corrupt government. Proceed to invite the f****** Russian Afrika Corps to take their place for security, but unfortunetely they are only good at removing gold from countries, not Islamist militants. Shabloimps, oh well, everyone in charge has got their bag, just a question of how much the max takeoff weight of their plane is, and how quickly that airport gets surrounded.

Probably not AQ, if only because the fall of Mali and the creation of another terrorist state would be terrible for everybody involved

The "government" is a military junta that took power in a nationalist coup, kicked out France, and immediately proceeded to sell out to Russia. They're not well-liked by anyone, but the AU (and the West) tolerates them, if only to stop JNIM. The FLA are bog-standard moderate rebels fighting for Azawad. They're not Islamist, but they don't mind working with JNIM either. On the other hand, though, they're rumored to have been backed by Ukraine, and are certainly effective at fighting the Russians and the junta, so... JNIM is literal AQ. Unlike HTS, there's no signs of them ever having moderated, and they're as transnational jihadist as they go. So unless FLA is really going to step up their game and part ways (unlikely, IMO), we might be seeing significant territorial control (including several major cities already) by jihadists again, which would be absolutely awful for not only Mali, but for the region and its many small states who are vulnerable to insecurity.
