During the 18th century, French presence in Africa was limited to four towns and very far from Mali. Are you really equating 2026 russian actions to three centuries old French colonial actions ? Genius argument here.

Would probably be an ideal outcome if the Islamists and Russian mercenaries mutually annihilated each other, leaving less people to terrorize Malian and Ukrainian civilians.

Yeah i'm with you in that boat. The better outcome for Mali was keeping the French around to do the job. But they kick them out and now, this is the result. Make stupid choices receive stupid prizes.

Well, thing isn't working like this, more like Russian mercenaries suspect your village cooperate with islamists then slaughter your village, and when islamists come they suspect your village cooperate with military and Russian mercenaries then slaughter your village again

I don’t like the Russians, but I do feel for Malian civilians. While there’s Azawad for the Tuareg, the southern part is being threatened by JNIM who are Al-Qaeda’s franchise in the Sahel. Maybe there’s a Jolani figure in there to be a somewhat “normal” Islamist government, but it’s more likely that it would be a transnational Taliban-esque regime across Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and other states.

Yeah , we (France) can’t let them though: that’s mostly where all of our terror attacks were trained before joining ISIS. So up to another coup and another 5,000 soldiers on the ground (which was our largest solo operation this century).

Things going to shit (moreso than before, at least) is not unexpected, but the breathtaking incompetence and cruelty all around is something to behold. Maybe the smoothbrain dictator did the French a favour, no need to stick ones coq anywhere near the place.

Not really but it was kinda predictable.  One of the few things that kept the country somewhat running was the foreign presence cooperating both with the Malian government and with the local independentists while hunting down the local djihadists. But the limits were often blurry and the malian were frustrated by the status quo and the military junta that toppled the government exploited the frustration to make France (and all country involved in the MINUSMA in the end because they all left, Denmark left by saying a diplomatic f*** off and cut everything) as the scapegoat. The Malian central government was unable to retake the mostly Tuareg populated city of Kidal without the French and the Chadian and was unable to offer a proper administration and military force to run it fairly by themselves for ~10 years. By removing the French buffer between the central government and the Tuaregs and by adding the Russian method being violence as a common solution, it was merely a matter of time before everything fall apart. And to add insults to the injury, the Ukrainians openly supported the Tuareg just for the fun of hunting down Russian assets. Won't be surprised to hear that Gao would be next.

not sure who to root for here, Ruzzians (they are of the worst kind too, ex-Wagner), or the rebels (who are Jihadists and Al-Qaeda, at least in part). I guess its the innocents and non-combatants that suffer, as always.

Not exactly a sports game here. You don’t have to “root for” anyone here. Russians are horrible walking war crime and crimes against humanity generators, Mali dictatorship ain’t much better and Islamists are, well…Islamists. Only ones decent in region were French who kept Islamists and various Tuareg factions in check. Meanwhile Malians decided that French are evil colonialists and were quite happy about coup , expulsion of French troops (after they saved Malian asses) and Russian arrival so they can deal with their own mess now

The forces fighting the Malian government is very diverse. In addition to radical Islamist forces, the group in the north, than have taken the city of Kidal, are the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), an ethnic Taureg seperatist group that have been fighting the central government for years. While not explicitly Islamist themselves, this is one of many coordinated operations with Islamists.

Last time the Tauregs managed a coordinated effort with the Islamists the alliance immedietly broke apart and they had to ask the goverment for help. Looks like they learnt nothing in 10 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azawad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Gao

It’s so weird when Listnookors say this sort of thing. In what world do you root for f****** Al-Qaeda taking over a country?
36
DavidlikesPeace 1 day ago +30
In the same world where Russians massacre civilians from Bucha to Aleppo to Mali The world is complex. But one important real fact is secular dictatorships can be as vicious as any theocracy. And Russian supported regimes are among the worst. It’s not a choice I’d ever want to face. We should pity any civilians are caught between such a rock and a hard place.

So when are you having the high levels with Al Qaeda and Ru about civilians? oh and the Mali government, as they wanted to make sure they were no neo-colonials

“Pragmatically speaking” their local issues do not extend to just Mali, but to the entire Sahel. They’re also quite formally partnered with similar groups in North Africa and of course Arabia. Just because they are not directly going after the West doesn’t make it any less of a problem when they decide to go after Western partners. That’s not even getting into humanitarian concerns, or the high likelihood of a future shift to focus outwards once they entrench. Net positive or not, Mali is not contributing much of anything to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Certainly not enough to justify unironically rooting for Islamic Terrorists to take over.

Fundamentalist Islam is a bigger threat to the west as whole than Russia.

Fantastic. They are proving that Russia is not invincible and the Russian war in Ukraine is sapping even the strength and resources from Russian mercenaries. Sooner or later, African and other countries will realize Russia is weak now and they certainly should take advantage of a weak Russia.
