Might be worth asking the bomber what year he thinks it is.

We have still have occasional car bombs, this isn’t out of the ordinary. It’s more out of the ordinary that it’s getting so much news coverage.

No one seems to care when it’s in the likes of Lurgan, Derry or Strabanistan. Guess Lurgan is technically east of the Bann but it’s the exception.

Like I know us Americans are self-absorbed about our own politics but...the Good Friday Agreement was near 30 years ago. How the hell is that still happening?

Apparently not. Just wondering why. I mean yes NI is still a small Catholic island in a sea of Anglicans and still subservient to the British crown, so I guess there are those. But as I understood it the IRA was all but dead and the British government was a hell of a lot less shitty to Northern Ireland than they were in Thatcher's or Blair's day.

Particular_Milk9555May 2, 2026

NI is not an island, it’s 6 counties in the northeast of the island of Ireland. The provisional IRA decommissioned and their political wing is currently the largest party but there are some who view them entering constitutional politics as a betrayal. We live mostly in peace but there are still occasional minor car bombs and shootings but it’s relatively contained.

So feel like I should explain some things. As others already told you, the comment about an island is metaphorical. Yes Americans are by and largely inept in geography, but I can find each piece of the UK reasonably well, thanks.
Perhaps not so well on other things, though. I did get it backwards on religion in NI- But for a bit of a reason. One of the reasons for the Troubles was conflict between Catholic separatists and Protestants wishing to remain in the UK. For some reason my brain short circuited and I processed that as "NI was predominately Catholic as opposed to the Republic of Ireland" and that was a factor. That was obviously a mistake and I should know better, given I was raised Catholic myself and heard the stories of St Patrick (Pádhraig) from childhood. I'll own it, I was stupid there.
My main reason for shock and surprise was other posters commenting that car bombings in Ireland were still a "common" thing- and that shocked me. Those bombings during the troubles were components of a guerilla war that as far as I knew ended in 2005 when the IRA effectively de-militarized themselves. For a first-world country to still have cars blowing up on public streets enough for people to remark about it in such blase terms is strange enough. To be happening so long after (as far as I knew) that conflict was long over was astonishing.
Oh and this wasn't part of the reason for my comments earlier but went and looked it up out of curiosity. At least as of the most recent census in 2021 Catholics are actually the largest Christian sect in the counties. Source: https://www.nisra.gov.uk/publications/census-2021-main-statistics-religion-tables Not really relevant, just an interesting fact.

Lmao, they meant a metaphorical island, as in they are Catholics surrounded by Anglicans.
6
Particular_Milk9555May 2, 2026
+4
But that’s even more incorrect?
1. Ireland may be majority Catholic but the 6 counties (NI) are not
2. Scotland and Wales are Celts, not Anglicans
4
OldAccountIsGlitchedMay 2, 2026

Anglican means the Anglican church. Aka the church of England and its many offshoots. Of course it's still incorrect because there are plenty of Presbyterians (a branch of Calvinism) in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

What a remarkably stupid comment. The "real IRA" and other splinter groups that still do bombings in Ireland today broke off from the Provisional IRA because they didn't accept the good Friday agreement. That was in 1998, 28 years ago. They're not gonna be spring chickens in the big year of 2026.
I'm going to guess you're literally 14 because your 60s are hardly the age of dropping dead.

If these were American cops I'd agree this is a patsy.
No idea how Irish cops operate.
The article provides no information on how this man was connected to the event - maybe a passing mention of CCTV footage but nothing else.
I'd want transparency, and live in the frame it an American context - so I'm inclined to agree this is a patsy until proven otherwise.
And while most folks don't suffer a severe mental decline by 66, I would certainly expect less tech literacy at that age.
