March 27-29 Box Office Recap – 'Project Hail Mary' stays at #1, dropping just 33% and crossing $300M worldwide, becoming Amazon MGM's biggest ever film. 'They Will Kill You' flops with just $4.9M domestically and $8.9M worldwide. 'Dhurandhar 2' becomes the biggest Indian film in North America.

With very little buzz, WB's ***They Will Kill You*** failed to attract action fans. The Top 10 earned a combined $92.5 million over the weekend. That's up 33.6% from last year, when ***A Working Man*** took the #1 spot away from ***Snow White***. Amazon MGM's ***Project Hail Mary*** stayed at #1 with a fantastic $54.1 million this weekend. That represents a drop of just 33%, which is much better than ***Dune: Part Two*** (44%), and it's pretty close to ***The Martian*** (32%). The film's drop is a sign that its great word of mouth ("A" on CinemaScore) is paying off, and the lack of substantial competition also helped it. Through 10 days, the film has amassed a fantastic $163.8 million domestically, becoming the year's highest grossing film. That title is short-lived though; ***Mario*** is coming in a few days to take that crown. It's going to lose IMAX and other PLF screens to that film, but even with that loss, ***Project Hail Mary*** should continue holding well over April. A $280 million domestic total is likely, but don't be surprised if this makes it to $300 million. In second place, Disney/Pixar's ***Hoppers*** eased just 32%, earning $12.1 million this weekend. The film has banked $138.5 million domestically, and should surpass ***Elemental*** by next week. ***Mario*** is very heavy competition though, so we'll see where it can finish based on next week's drop. Debuting in third place, WB's ***They Will Kill You*** flopped with just $4.9 million in 2,778 theaters. That's WB's worst debut since ***The Alto Knights*** ($3.3 million), which came around this point last year. While WB had an incredible year, this marks two box office failures in a row (after ***The Bride!*** earlier this month). It's not a surprise to see the film struggle. WB spent very low on marketing, creating little to no buzz or awareness for the title. It didn't help that the action comedy horror angle meant that the film had to compete with ***Ready or Not 2*** (at one point these titles were supposed to come out on the same weekend). Even though it has recognizable names, none are exactly box office draws, with WB choosing to emphasize producer Andy Muschietti's role. But if ***Him*** proved something, it's that the audience won't fall easily for a producer's name (and even then, Muschietti's name lacks the recognition of Jordan Peele). The only hope was reviews, but the 66% on RT won't move the needle much. According to WB, 36% of the audience was in the 25-34 demographic. While young women were a main target, they represented just 10% of the week's audience. They gave it a weak "B–", which suggests it will fall off quickly. Universal's ***Reminders of Him*** dipped 41% for a $4.7 million weekend. The film has earned $41 million and it's only still a few millions away from overtaking ***Regretting You*** ($48.8 million). In fifth place, ***Dhurandhar: The Revenge*** is showing strong holds compared to other Indian titles. It earned $4.6 million, which is a 54% drop. That's much better than other titles, showing that this sequel is really connecting with audiences. The film has already earned $22.6 million domestically, making it the highest grossing Indian film in North America, finally overtaking ***Baahubali 2*** ($20.1M). After its so-so debut, Searchlight's ***Ready or Not 2*** doesn't appear to show staying power. It dropped a rough 54%, earning $4.1 million. Through 10 days, the film has earned $16.4 million, which is around $4 million below the original through the same point. The film is now guaranteed to finish below the original's gross, looking to finish with around $23 million domestically. After some rough weeks, ***Scream 7*** stabilized, albeit quite late to the game. It eased 39%, adding $2.6 million this weekend. The film has now amassed $118.6 million domestically. Sony's ***Goat*** eased 37%, adding $2.1 million this weekend. This allowed it to cross $100 million domestically, becoming the fourth film of the year to hit that milestone. It still has a little more left, but ***Mario*** will complicate matters. In ninth place, A24's ***Undertone*** dropped 45%, adding $1.6 million. The film has earned a damn great $18.4 million, and it still has a few more millions left in the tank. In tenth place, IFC Films' ***Forbidden Fruits*** flopped with just $1.1 million in 1,525 theaters. That's a very poor $768 per-theater average. With competition on its way, don't expect this to last long in theaters. Focus Features released the documentary ***The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist*** in 786 theaters, but it mustered just $646,020. That's a very weak $822 per-theater average. Universal re-released ***The Mummy Returns*** in 1,430 theaters for its 25th anniversary. But it made just $596,080. That takes its lifetime gross to $202.6 million domestically. #**OVERSEAS** ***Project Hail Mary*** added $54.1 million, allowing it to cross $300 million worldwide on its second frame. That drop is an incredible 5% off from last week, showing word of mouth is also making its way overseas, with some markets actually increasing from the second weekend. The best markets are the UK ($20.1M), China ($19M), Australia ($10.2M), South Korea ($8.7M), Germany ($8.7M), Mexico ($6.6M), France ($5.6M), Japan ($5.1M), Brazil ($3.2M), Italy ($3.2M), Netherlands ($2.5M), Saudi Arabia ($2.3M), Poland ($2.1M), Taiwan ($2.1M), United Arab Estimates ($1.7M), Sweden ($1.5M), Norway ($1.4M), Switzerland ($1.4M), Denmark ($1.3M), Colombia ($1.2M), Hong Kong ($1.2M), New Zealand ($1.2M), Philippines ($1.2M), Czech Republic ($1.1M), Peru ($1.1M), and Belgium ($1M). There are no more major markets left to open, and ***Mario*** is tracking for some big numbers this week. Nevertheless, ***Project Hail Mary*** is well positioned for a healthy run through April. $500 million is pretty much assured, and it could get very close to $600 million if it can survive that film. ***Hoppers*** added $24.8 million overseas, taking its worldwide total to $297.9 million. It debuted in Australia with $2 million, which marks the best debut for a Disney/Pixar original since ***Zootopia***. It has shown very good legs in China ($16.8M), Mexico ($13M), France ($9.5M), Japan ($9M). Once again, ***Mario*** is coming in to steal some family audiences, so we'll see how it holds this week. ***Reminders of Him*** added $4.9 million overseas, taking its worldwide total to $69.6 million. Its best market remains Germany with $6.7 million. ***They Will Kill You*** debuted with a weak $4 million overseas, for an underwhelming $8.9 million worldwide launch. It had very poor debuts in France ($598K), the UK ($418K), Germany ($270K), Mexico ($218K), Italy ($215K), Spain ($198K), Brazil ($149K), Australia ($135K), Holland ($110K), Colombia ($92K), Poland ($91K), and Switzerland ($65K). The budget was $20 million, so it's not gonna be a big loss, but it still marks a financial failure. ***Ready or Not*** added $2.9 million overseas, for a $23.6 million worldwide total. Its best market debut was Phillippines ($500K) and Mexico ($400K), but the latter was a bit weak. The best markets are the UK ($1.8M), Australia ($700K). Philippines ($500K), Mexico ($400K), Brazil ($400K), Malaysia ($400K), Colombia ($300K) and Netherland ($300K). It still has yet to debut in big markets like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea and Japan. With $3.7 million overseas, ***Scream 7*** has finally crossed $200 million worldwide. #**FILMS THAT ENDED THEIR RUN THIS WEEK** None. #**THIS WEEKEND** After a very good performance in March, the April box office is set to debut with a bang. That's thanks to ***The Super Mario Galaxy Movie***, the sequel to the 2023 hit. Most of the cast is back, and they are joined by Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Donald Glover (Yoshi), Brie Larson (Rosalina) and Glen Powell (Fox McCloud). Given the high popularity of the games and the prior film, this is pretty much guaranteed to perform damn well at the box office, and cementing $1 billion worldwide. The question now is how high it can go. Also opening this week, there's A24's ***The Drama***, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The film follows a couple days before their wedding, when the bride reveals an truth that shakes the groom. A24 has mounted a very effective marketing campaign, keeping the "secret"... well, as a secret. That should lead to some curiosity among audiences to find out what it is. #**STREAMING DATA** Chart's been missing for the past weeks due to time constraints, but it should be back up now. Figures for the week of March 16 to March 22: No. | Movie | Year | Studio | Weeks in Top 10 | Views | Runtime | Hours Viewed ----------|----------|:--------:|:--------:|:--------:|:--------:|:--------:|:--------: 1 | *Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man* | 2026 | Netflix | 1 | 25,300,000 | 1:54 | 48,100,000 2 | *War Machine* | 2026 | Netflix | 3 | 18,000,000 | 1:49 | 32,700,000 3 | *Made in Korea* | 2026 | Netflix | 2 | 6,700,000 | 1:53 | 12,700,000 4 | *Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere* | 2026 | Netflix | 2 | 6,300,000 | 1:31 | 9,500,000 5 | *KPop Demon Hunters* | 2025 | Netflix | 40 | 5,400,000 | 1:40 | 9,000,000 6 | *Gaslit By My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story* | 2026 | Netflix | 1 | 5,200,000 | 1:28 | 7,700,000 7 | *Nobody 2* | 2025 | Universal | 1 | 4,900,000 | 1:29 | 7,200,000 8 | *27 Dresses* | 2008 | 20th Century Fox | 1 | 3,900,000 | 1:51 | 7,300,000 9 | *Border 2* | 2026 | AA Films | 1 | 3,300,000 | 3:22 | 11,100,000 10 | *Double Jeopardy* | 1999 | Paramount | 2 | 3,300,000 | 1:46 | 5,800,000 To the surprise of no one, ***Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man*** debuted with a very solid 25.3 million hours. Not quite close to what ***The Rip*** or ***War Machine*** made in their first week, but it wasn't expected to match those figures. Speaking of ***War Machine***, the film continues showing staying power. On its third week, it went to second place with 18 million views. That means that across the first three weeks, the film has already accumulated a fantastic 101.7 million views. Through the same point, ***The Rip*** had made 96.6 million views, which showcases how much of a surprise ***War Machine*** is. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ If you're interested in following the box office, come join us in r/BoxOffice.

Not sure who decided to release Ready or Not 2, Forbidden Fruits and They Will Kill You so close together. They all seem to fit a similar lane and I want to see all of them but I can’t justify going to the movies three times this close together!

I’ve watched all in the last week lol Ready or not 2 was the best, go for that one if you have to pick

Alpha-Trion Mar 30, 2026 +15
Ready or Not 2 was awesome.
15
SirGaylordSteambath Mar 30, 2026 +12
You can tell they waited until the script was solid
12
booksandteacv Mar 31, 2026 +3
I saw both They Will Kill You and Ready or Not 2 recently. I would be very unsurprised if it was later revealed that one script poached from the other, especially since both movies heavily revolve around a pair of estranged sisters.
3
SirGaylordSteambath Mar 31, 2026 +2
Yeah I noticed the similarities too, my guess was the write saw the first and worked from there
2
booksandteacv Mar 31, 2026
My theory right now is that the writers of TWKY were shopping the script around, and the production company who made Ready or Not saw it and asked RON's writers to write a sequel with a similar premise. The writers of RON have openly said that they weren't considering writing a sequel until they were asked to. And that would also explain why RON2 had its released date moved forward by a month - they wanted to beat the other movie to the theatre.

SirGaylordSteambath Mar 31, 2026 +2
I watched a podcast with the main actress in it and she specifically said the script was collaborative and they didn’t go ahead until they had one they were all satisfied with. She lists off several story beats that never made it to the screen, so I’m pretty sure the writers didn’t plagiarise

ThrowingChicken Mar 30, 2026 +4
Where does Forbidden Fruit fit in the mix? I’ve already seen the other two.
4
SirGaylordSteambath Mar 30, 2026
Third, it was funny but didn’t quite have the production value of the other two

They Will Kill You is not what you think it is, I promise you. Had a blast.

Why not just watch them all in a day. Make a day at the movies and hop around the theater. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have a day job lol

Weekends are a thing ;) But I understand, I too don't understand why they released such similar (at least, based on the trailers) so close to eachother.

Ryan the king of box office Gosling.

mikeyfreshh Mar 30, 2026 +65
I think it's really hard to tie box office performance to star power at this point. The Fall Guy was a huge flop despite also starring Gosling
65
DoughnutOwn8928 Mar 31, 2026 +15
Yeah I forgot tha even happened lol. 'Barbie' though
15
Cha0tic_Engine Mar 31, 2026 +1
The Fall Guy was one of those insanely stupid budget movies. There was no reason at all to give that movie a 130million budget. It would've done just fine, if it had half of that.
1
mikeyfreshh Mar 31, 2026 +2
I think that budget got artificially inflated by COVID
2
Slurm11 Mar 30, 2026 -7
The Fall Guy was also verrrrrry mediocre
-7
hoopaholik91 Mar 31, 2026 +26
Then use The Nice Guys. Gosling AND Crowe. Great movie. No money

The Fall Guy was fantastic.

Was it a masterpiece? No, but I don't think it was mediocre either.
3
dodeca_negative Mar 31, 2026 -6
I mean I got a friend to go with me to PHM only because they love Gosling. And we both left disappointed. So, lesson learned I guess.
-6
Orleanian Mar 31, 2026 +11
You have to be the first person I've heard of that was dissapointed by Project Hail Mary.
11
dodeca_negative Mar 31, 2026 -3
Yep I know. Found it forcibly cute, way too reliant on montages, overstuffed with jokes. At the same time it underplayed one of the book’s key plot points and storytelling devices (>!Grace’s amnesia!<) to such a degree that it was pointless to include. But to each their own I guess.
-3
jthoning Mar 31, 2026 +2
I fully agree with this. It almost feels like they movie had a checklist of plot points from the book that they had to check off. Also seeing that the directors made the lego movie mead everything click for me, the humor was very lego movie and felt like it was from 2015, and it just didn't work super well for me.

Dr_Mantis_Teabaggin Mar 30, 2026 +22
Why is his name Ryan Gosling if he’s a grown-ass man? Shouldn’t it be Ryan Goose?

That said, the box office is not a guarantee of quality. One Battle After Another didn’t have huge box office numbers, yet it’s a perfect masterpiece and a serious contender for the title of the best film of the 21st century.
-23
TwunnySeven Mar 31, 2026 +10
it's a good film but I don't understand why people hype it up like this so much. I don't even think it was the top movie of the year, much less the century
10
Fenrirr Mar 30, 2026 +3
I loved OBAO, but it is not a serious contender, especially considering we got another 74 years of films before the word "best" can start getting thrown around. One could argue it's not even PTAs best film this century.
3
Keviticas Mar 30, 2026 -13
I saw it and it wasn't even good. One battle after another was forgettable Oscar bait junk. The most 6/10 movie of all time
-13
mikeyfreshh Mar 30, 2026 +1
It's a stoner action comedy. I wouldn't exactly call that Oscar bait
1
Keviticas Mar 30, 2026 -2
I wouldn't call it at all a comedy, and the action is mostly underwhelming, and the story and characters are awful. Leo taking his role seriously is what makes it Oscar bait
-2
guff1988 Mar 31, 2026 +1
You got a bone to pick and I feel that but I respectfully disagree.
1
weareallpatriots Mar 31, 2026
Yeah, I gave it a 6 out of the theater too, but more like 5-5.5 in retrospect. Licorice Pizza was better and I barely remember that one.

stephen1547 Mar 30, 2026 +1
What a garbage take.

I really thought Leo would stop with the Oscar after he won one for the Revenant. No luck I guess.

"Turn your brain off / turn your head off" has to be one of the laziest ways to review a movie and should be banned from this sublistnook. "Just go into a coma, suffer brain damage, develop a mental deficiency" Thats not a review or stating why you liked a movie

In the Aussie box office, I was firmly expecting Hoppers to knock Project Hail Mary from top spot this weekend, but it wasn't even close. Project Hail Mary in the Australian box office dropped just -10% in its second weekend to hold off Hoppers for top spot which opened at $1.7m vs PHM's $5.5m second weekend. We also had Dhurandhar: The Revenge holding crazy good for an Indian release, dropping -55% when they normally drop 80-90% weekend 2 as Indian cinema tends to be massively frontloaded in Australia. Hoppers opening to only $1.7m makes it the 5th lowest opening for Pixar in Australia, only beating out Coco (2017/1.6m), Elemental (2023/1.5m), Toy Story (1995/$1m) and Elio (2025/$700k) and if you adjust for inflation it gets worse with it being the third lowest opening for them. All is not lost though, we are going into school holidays this week, so all the family movies should get a big boost but they are also going head to head with the new Super Mario movie... soooo good luck Pixar.

Project Hail Mary really did a number on the box office! It's wild seeing how it outperformed expectations, especially with 'They Will Kill You' not making much noise. Also, Dhurandhar 2's success is a testament to the growing love for Indian cinema in North America. 🎬
