Thanks to very limited competition over the weekend, ***Project Hail Mary*** emerged victorious on its second weekend with a fantastic hold, cementing itself as Amazon MGM's highest grossing film. With very little buzz, WB's ***They Will Kill You*** failed to attract action fans.
The Top 10 earned a combined $92.5 million over the weekend. That's up 33.6% from last year, when ***A Working Man*** took the #1 spot away from ***Snow White***.
Amazon MGM's ***Project Hail Mary*** stayed at #1 with a fantastic $54.1 million this weekend. That represents a drop of just 33%, which is much better than ***Dune: Part Two*** (44%), and it's pretty close to ***The Martian*** (32%). The film's drop is a sign that its great word of mouth ("A" on CinemaScore) is paying off, and the lack of substantial competition also helped it.
Through 10 days, the film has amassed a fantastic $163.8 million domestically, becoming the year's highest grossing film. That title is short-lived though; ***Mario*** is coming in a few days to take that crown. It's going to lose IMAX and other PLF screens to that film, but even with that loss, ***Project Hail Mary*** should continue holding well over April. A $280 million domestic total is likely, but don't be surprised if this makes it to $300 million.
In second place, Disney/Pixar's ***Hoppers*** eased just 32%, earning $12.1 million this weekend. The film has banked $138.5 million domestically, and should surpass ***Elemental*** by next week. ***Mario*** is very heavy competition though, so we'll see where it can finish based on next week's drop.
Debuting in third place, WB's ***They Will Kill You*** flopped with just $4.9 million in 2,778 theaters. That's WB's worst debut since ***The Alto Knights*** ($3.3 million), which came around this point last year. While WB had an incredible year, this marks two box office failures in a row (after ***The Bride!*** earlier this month).
It's not a surprise to see the film struggle. WB spent very low on marketing, creating little to no buzz or awareness for the title. It didn't help that the action comedy horror angle meant that the film had to compete with ***Ready or Not 2*** (at one point these titles were supposed to come out on the same weekend). Even though it has recognizable names, none are exactly box office draws, with WB choosing to emphasize producer Andy Muschietti's role. But if ***Him*** proved something, it's that the audience won't fall easily for a producer's name (and even then, Muschietti's name lacks the recognition of Jordan Peele). The only hope was reviews, but the 66% on RT won't move the needle much.
According to WB, 36% of the audience was in the 25-34 demographic. While young women were a main target, they represented just 10% of the week's audience. They gave it a weak "B–", which suggests it will fall off quickly.
Universal's ***Reminders of Him*** dipped 41% for a $4.7 million weekend. The film has earned $41 million and it's only still a few millions away from overtaking ***Regretting You*** ($48.8 million).
In fifth place, ***Dhurandhar: The Revenge*** is showing strong holds compared to other Indian titles. It earned $4.6 million, which is a 54% drop. That's much better than other titles, showing that this sequel is really connecting with audiences. The film has already earned $22.6 million domestically, making it the highest grossing Indian film in North America, finally overtaking ***Baahubali 2*** ($20.1M).
After its so-so debut, Searchlight's ***Ready or Not 2*** doesn't appear to show staying power. It dropped a rough 54%, earning $4.1 million. Through 10 days, the film has earned $16.4 million, which is around $4 million below the original through the same point. The film is now guaranteed to finish below the original's gross, looking to finish with around $23 million domestically.
After some rough weeks, ***Scream 7*** stabilized, albeit quite late to the game. It eased 39%, adding $2.6 million this weekend. The film has now amassed $118.6 million domestically.
Sony's ***Goat*** eased 37%, adding $2.1 million this weekend. This allowed it to cross $100 million domestically, becoming the fourth film of the year to hit that milestone. It still has a little more left, but ***Mario*** will complicate matters.
In ninth place, A24's ***Undertone*** dropped 45%, adding $1.6 million. The film has earned a damn great $18.4 million, and it still has a few more millions left in the tank.
In tenth place, IFC Films' ***Forbidden Fruits*** flopped with just $1.1 million in 1,525 theaters. That's a very poor $768 per-theater average. With competition on its way, don't expect this to last long in theaters.
Focus Features released the documentary ***The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist*** in 786 theaters, but it mustered just $646,020. That's a very weak $822 per-theater average.
Universal re-released ***The Mummy Returns*** in 1,430 theaters for its 25th anniversary. But it made just $596,080. That takes its lifetime gross to $202.6 million domestically.

***Project Hail Mary*** added $54.1 million, allowing it to cross $300 million worldwide on its second frame. That drop is an incredible 5% off from last week, showing word of mouth is also making its way overseas, with some markets actually increasing from the second weekend. The best markets are the UK ($20.1M), China ($19M), Australia ($10.2M), South Korea ($8.7M), Germany ($8.7M), Mexico ($6.6M), France ($5.6M), Japan ($5.1M), Brazil ($3.2M), Italy ($3.2M), Netherlands ($2.5M), Saudi Arabia ($2.3M), Poland ($2.1M), Taiwan ($2.1M), United Arab Estimates ($1.7M), Sweden ($1.5M), Norway ($1.4M), Switzerland ($1.4M), Denmark ($1.3M), Colombia ($1.2M), Hong Kong ($1.2M), New Zealand ($1.2M), Philippines ($1.2M), Czech Republic ($1.1M), Peru ($1.1M), and Belgium ($1M).
There are no more major markets left to open, and ***Mario*** is tracking for some big numbers this week. Nevertheless, ***Project Hail Mary*** is well positioned for a healthy run through April. $500 million is pretty much assured, and it could get very close to $600 million if it can survive that film.
***Hoppers*** added $24.8 million overseas, taking its worldwide total to $297.9 million. It debuted in Australia with $2 million, which marks the best debut for a Disney/Pixar original since ***Zootopia***. It has shown very good legs in China ($16.8M), Mexico ($13M), France ($9.5M), Japan ($9M). Once again, ***Mario*** is coming in to steal some family audiences, so we'll see how it holds this week.
***Reminders of Him*** added $4.9 million overseas, taking its worldwide total to $69.6 million. Its best market remains Germany with $6.7 million.
***They Will Kill You*** debuted with a weak $4 million overseas, for an underwhelming $8.9 million worldwide launch. It had very poor debuts in France ($598K), the UK ($418K), Germany ($270K), Mexico ($218K), Italy ($215K), Spain ($198K), Brazil ($149K), Australia ($135K), Holland ($110K), Colombia ($92K), Poland ($91K), and Switzerland ($65K). The budget was $20 million, so it's not gonna be a big loss, but it still marks a financial failure.
***Ready or Not*** added $2.9 million overseas, for a $23.6 million worldwide total. Its best market debut was Phillippines ($500K) and Mexico ($400K), but the latter was a bit weak. The best markets are the UK ($1.8M), Australia ($700K). Philippines ($500K), Mexico ($400K), Brazil ($400K), Malaysia ($400K), Colombia ($300K) and Netherland ($300K). It still has yet to debut in big markets like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea and Japan.
With $3.7 million overseas, ***Scream 7*** has finally crossed $200 million worldwide.
#**FILMS THAT ENDED THEIR RUN THIS WEEK**
None.
#**THIS WEEKEND**
After a very good performance in March, the April box office is set to debut with a bang.
That's thanks to ***The Super Mario Galaxy Movie***, the sequel to the 2023 hit. Most of the cast is back, and they are joined by Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Donald Glover (Yoshi), Brie Larson (Rosalina) and Glen Powell (Fox McCloud). Given the high popularity of the games and the prior film, this is pretty much guaranteed to perform damn well at the box office, and cementing $1 billion worldwide. The question now is how high it can go.
Also opening this week, there's A24's ***The Drama***, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The film follows a couple days before their wedding, when the bride reveals an truth that shakes the groom. A24 has mounted a very effective marketing campaign, keeping the "secret"... well, as a secret. That should lead to some curiosity among audiences to find out what it is.

To the surprise of no one, ***Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man*** debuted with a very solid 25.3 million hours. Not quite close to what ***The Rip*** or ***War Machine*** made in their first week, but it wasn't expected to match those figures.
Speaking of ***War Machine***, the film continues showing staying power. On its third week, it went to second place with 18 million views. That means that across the first three weeks, the film has already accumulated a fantastic 101.7 million views. Through the same point, ***The Rip*** had made 96.6 million views, which showcases how much of a surprise ***War Machine*** is.
