From first impressions after I finished the first three episodes, I think Michelle Pfieffer nailed it regarding having an older and more jaded/exhausted equivalent of Elle Fanning's personality as her Mom

I noticed. She looks way younger than her age but still doesn’t look 40, which is what her age would have to be if she’d been a young mom to a 19 year old. Regardless, I think she plays the part well, but I have to suspend disbelief she’s traumatized by her own young pregnancy.

Agreed - I guess I'm rationalizing it by... I don't think (though I could be wrong) that she ever references being young. So I'm deciding she's traumatized by her own inability to achieve anything and being an unprepared, poor, single mom. It's not perfect.

My people. I love Michelle generally and her performance was exactly what you want but I also was like “How was a 40 year old not ready for a baby?” It made me think of Scarpetta and Nicole Kidman. (Another actress I respect) At that level, people aren’t going to tell them you can’t play this role. If you’re reading this ladies, we must self-censor.

I agree . She looks like her grandmother . She looks good for her age though but not to have a 20 year old daughter . I like the roommate and the dad . She never should have agreed to the steepest without monthly payments so she could raise her son. They haven’t mentioned her parents age yet . Maybe her mom only supposed to be 55-ish ? It threw me off a little bit then realized Michele Pfeiffer husband is the producer. Series good so far . Hoping for happy ending .

Okay interesting it’s polarizing. I quit reading the book at 20% because the character was so unbelievably stupid I couldn’t deal with it. Saw it was being made into a show and just couldn’t imagine how they were going to make it okay. Gonna watch it right now!

I also can’t stand watching the character make such stupid big life decisions and then play a victim to how hard life is. It only annoys me rather than makes me empathize with her. Then to extort the professor! Yes he’s wrong and a cheater, but she chose to have the baby and not use birth control also. Just dumb shit all around. I love Nick Offerman so I’ll keep watching a few more episodes to see if there is anything to laugh or smile about. So far (two episode in) she comes across as too stupid and selfish to cheer for.
Room mates and her mom and the whole world shouldn’t be expected to roll with her screaming baby because she wants to play mom. It’s annoying because it’s so common and sad that people have kids who can’t handle them.
4
rsqit5 days ago
+2
How is it her dumb decision? He also had sex with her. He’s legally liable to pay for the kid as the father. It’s her decision to have the child. Why exactly are you criticizing her and not him?
2
Namaste415 days ago
-1
It’s her dumb decision because she has no money to raise a kid or child care. She didn’t use birth control and she will be the one getting knocked up, not him. It’s going to affect her life more. She chose to f*** a married man also who is not available. Yes he’s wrong for cheating, but he didn’t want a kid. So in my opinion, legal responsibility or not, I feel like if a woman chooses to keep it from a situation like “f****** around” then they should be responsible for raising it. They both should have been careful about not getting pregnant. If she had gotten pregnant by sperm donor, she would have no one to pay for it. So I feel like this is basically no different when they aren’t in a committed relationship to raise the kid. The one who is going to carry the life changing burden is her, so yes it’s dumb of her to not be more careful and have a kid with no way of supporting it or herself. It’s a fictional show about this kind of drama, but also happens all the time unfortunately. I’m sure since it’s fictional, everything works out fine. In real life…not good choices. Raising a kid isn’t like getting a puppy.
-1
Yestie4 days ago
+2
Jfc he was her professor. He should 1000000% at the very least FEEL responsible. He could have had the birth control talk... insisted on condoms at the bare minimum. Again... hes the PROFESSOR. She is a YOUNG STUDENT.
2
Namaste414 days ago
-1
She’s 19 years old in college with 3 roommates. Do you really think she doesn’t know what birth control is? She didn’t come across as a virgin and she shouldn’t take birth control advice from a man. Wow!
Yes, her body, her choice. Which means she needs to take care of it. Not expect some man to. So every guy she hooks up with is supposed to explain to her about birth control? She wasn’t raped. She chose to have unprotected sex.
And yes, he’s a man who won’t be the one getting pregnant. Professor or not. They both were selfish and irresponsible. He was also married. She’s just as responsible as him and the one who made the choice to have it.

It can only be better, watching it now but I dnf’d the book so early, it was terrible.
EDIT: YOU GUYS ITS SO MUCH BETTER. They changed all the parts where she was just an unbelievable numbskull, it was SUCH a hard read. They took out the part where she hadn’t even considered childcare until after the baby was born and called around, shocked to find out it was expensive and that parents sign up for wait lists before their kids are born (NO. FORESIGHT.). And in the book she accepted $15,000 up front, that’s it, for the NDA and is somehow surprised that it doesn’t go very far, realizing much later that they probably would’ve paid much more if she’d asked (compared to the trust fund in the show, which shows she actually is thinking ahead for the baby). AND THAT SHE HADNT HEARD OF O******* AT ALL. What rock did book Margo live under. God I hated that book. This show rules though.

Just finished the book and watched the first 3 episodes. It mostly sticks to it. Seems like Nicole Kidman is playing an original character based on a couple of characters from the novel. Jinx’s storyline and his relationship with Shayanne have the biggest changes with Shayanne being more antagonistic towards Jinx in the series and Jinx not knowing about the pregnancy till he gets out of rehab.

The story isn’t about her being pregnant. It’s about her being a struggling single mom. The show is a pretty slow burn anyway and doesn’t get to the Only Fans stuff until the end of the third episode giving enough time to set up her money struggles. Having her pregnant for 3 episodes would do nothing to build to that. It’s based off the book which does gloss over her pregnancy as well since it’s about her money struggles.
15

I'm aware of the show's concept, I simply don't think it would have hurt to have at least one or two more episodes of her dealing with the pregnancy itself and becoming increasingly more ostracized. Not a big deal, I'm loving the show either way.

There is no portrayal of the site so far to even speak of.
**There is nothing to portray as harmful or harmless SO FAR.** What about that is unclear? She herself doesn’t know much about what it is or how to use it. All she knows is it’s a website that exists, her father’s colleague was/is using it to make money, and people do sexual things on there (but she doesn’t yet know what kind of sexual things aside from d*** ratings.. bc she only knows what her friend has told her).
In the last 10 minutes of the episode she signs up for an account.
There is nothing to show SO FAR about the harmful impact it can/will have on her life (which the book shows, and the tv series will likely depict as well). >!She literally almost loses custody of her child over it in the book, and ultimately closes her O******* account because of the consequences it is having on her life as she becomes successful at it.!<
2

I was referring specifically to the way the site was initially framed, as shown in the scenes where she researches other creators and makes an account. Since you're refusing to acknowledge that as valid, you're not worth talking to any further.

I had a baby at 18 (senior year of high school) and there’s so many memories just flooding back lol. The constant daydreaming about what I might have been if I didn’t go right from child to parent, if I got to use my scholarship, all the way down to how my mom acted which was a really complicated tug of war between anger at the situation I put myself in and grief for what her daughter didn’t even realize she’s already lost.
It was the first time in my life I was constantly surrounded by another person, but I felt so alone going through it. Now as a mother of an almost 18 year old, I can completely understand Michelle Pfeiffers character. 100%.

So what!?! You only want to see stories about characters YOU deem as moral? That's so odd. You ain't hangin out with this chick, it's a character in a show. Plus, she wasn't the married one in the affair and she didn't plan to get preggers. Life is not easy for all. She's admirable for doing anything to provide for her child. Her father didn't even do that for her. A young woman who is trying to provide better for her kid than her parents did for her is not some sort of villain.

Ew just NO - we do not need a show that supports covering for a known predator at the expense of future victims. This is so gross and not nearly as empowering as they pretend it is. If that man has a predilection towards young, naive victims and has children in his home, we cannot assume that his boundary ends at “college freshman”. There are a lot of things about this show that are well written and relatable (my mom was a teenage mother), but why in this timeline we’re currently in are we cool with her taking money and signing NDAs to protect a groomer?
Really hope the show corrects this in the future (I have not read the book)

Watched one episode, the writing is subpar and unrealistic, but where it really fails is that it’s simply not funny.

Tried it, didn't grab me after like 30min. It wasn't bad just a tad slow and maybe not interesting stuff for a dude right away I dunno

How is it that people are enjoying this? The acting feels so forced. So forced! Its a mix between Fannings bad acting and a script that sounds like it was written by chat gpt. Looks like im about to get fucked by a robot? Wow. Witty? Jesus this is so bad. Im a connoisseur of the best content, and this sure AF ain't it.

I think every woman who has undergone a vaginal ultrasound had very similar thoughts about it.

Nope, they are easier than an exam. Her comment was way over reacting and ridiculous in my opinion. Bad writing! And this isn’t the dark ages. Everyone has an epidural unless they choose not to.

Weird to say it’s bad writing just because you find it unrelatable . Most of us don’t enjoy having doctors shove probes up our hoo ha. Especially not when we were 19, alone, and had no idea what to expect.
FYI there are plenty of reasons why an epidural may not be possible, even when it’s wanted. That line seemed a bit basic but at the same time, it felt in character for the mom to be uninformed and dramatic.

By 19, she has been to the gyno a few times. And having sex consists of a lot more shoving stuff up the hooha than a sonogram probe gently inserted. Not sure what your dr does, but I’d find a different one if it’s that traumatic. So she’s fine with unprotected sex and the possible consequences ( STDs and pregnancy) but a Dr visit is that shocking and scary. Yes, I stick with bad writing by making women seem so stupid and fragile.

I never used the words traumatic, shocking, or scary. Implying that because someone enjoys sex (which is pleasurable, natural, and fun) they should have zero qualms about rigid medical tools being inserted into their body is asinine at best. I guess I’m stupid and fragile too, since I enjoy sex and I don’t enjoy transvaginal ultrasounds. F*** off
1
Namaste416 days ago
Wow! So defensive and angry lol.
I also never used the word ENJOY, when having Gyno exams. I see you are unable to hear someone else’s opinion on a show or experience at the Dr. So yes, you seem too fragile for these conversations apparently too. Have a nice day.
My point was, it’s not that big of a deal.
Not enjoyable or shocking and terrible. They over dramatized it in my opinion.
I also don’t ENJOY going to the grocery store, dentist, tax office, mechanic …blah blah blah , but it’s a necessity and I accept it. It’s life. I’m not a drama queen that whines about shit like that. Or cusses someone out who has a different opinion. Grow up and get a grip. This isn’t that important lol

I hear your opinion and I’m just letting you know it sucks and you should maybe consider that for some people that is a big deal and for this character, it was a big deal. You could scrutinize any part of this show but you’re choosing her very normal behavior at the gynecologist.

Agree to the Namaste person lol. Extremely bad writing and unrealistic scenario even giving the contex and age of 19. It is some adaptation from a book but jeez. All that money for nice set designs and actors…

It is sad how cheating is constantly normalized and overlooked. How can I "feel" for her character when she is choosing to have an affair with a man she knows is married. Is there no moral integrity on her part? This is constantly glamorized in films and it is sick. Not even a focus on her feeling guilty or bad or sorrowful in the show. Gross.

This show is hot garbage. Michelle Pfeiffer would have been 50 when she had Margo, who is a college student and likely supposed to be 19 or 20. And why is a married “professor” having unprotected sex with students? He’s not concerned about stds? And how could they call that guy mid 30s? He looks 50. It’s incredibly hard to believe that someone that looks like Elle fanning would sleep with that guy. He has zero appeal. I see a bunch of women’s names attached to this, but this really feels like a male fantasy of what adorable but emotionally damaged college students with low self esteem are like. This show is infuriating.

> And how could they call that guy mid 30s? He looks 50.
So in a show where a woman in her late 20s plays a 19 year old, and a woman in her late 60s plays a woman in her 40s, you choose to complain about… a man in his mid-30s playing a man in his mid-30s…

Weird, I have almost the exact same reaction as you, except I would call it a *female* fantasy of being a hot, carefree college student ("so relatable, I'm a hot mess that picks bad men too!") who experiences hardship but with all the hard edges sanded off (for instance, her drug addict absentee father turns out to be... a guy that cleans the house obsessively and loves taking care of the baby).

I watched it last night. It’s more twee than I thought it would be and I’m hoping the show and the characters find their groove a bit more. Some of the acting was over the top ridiculous. I had to look away at some of Michelle Pfieffer’s arm acting moments.

To be honest, I was expecting that. It felt in keeping with the tone of the show, which was to be frank and unsentimental about the effects of pregnancy on the body. Same with the movie Knocked Up.
