Marshalls

Posted by Zokar49111

I’ve watched every episode so far and I’ve got to say that this is just a bad tv show. I enjoyed Yellowstone, and like millions of others I eagerly awaited Marshalls. But except for the scenery it has very few Yellowstone vibes. I would be ok with that if it was just a good cop show, but it’s not even that. The writing and acting are just awful. People are calling it NCIS Bozeman, but it doesn’t even cut it as another CBS procedural.

Why do people keep spelling Marshals as Marshalls? Why not just go big and spell it Marshalllllls?

Years of spending cuts to education, and the fact that there used to be a department store chain called Marshall's, which was stylized without the apostrophe.

I gave up on Yellowstone because for me it seemed to degenerate into Costner looking off in the distance saying something like - Every man has a moment when he reaches his limit. You gotta know yours. And the plots seemed to involve his family doing illegal things, yet trying to talk about integrity and saving the valley from evil land developers. Can't garner empathy for shitty people. And something like the first three seasons weren't even filmed in Montana lol. All that to say Marshalls is off the list, thanks OP.

Dropped out mid Episode 2.

I thought this was going to have something to do with a show about retail employees working at a d******* department store.

I said in another comment; this show is a a pretty generic western cop show, but it's saddled with following Kayce as a main character. And Kayce is a wet noodle of a character. He's boring. I don't know what else to call it. He's a boring character with blandly generic character traits such as a 'war badass veteran cowboy man' and 'he has a son too and his wife is dead.' And the actor, the character, and the show do nothing interesting with any of that. Nothing interesting was really done with any of that all the way back in Yellowstone tbf. It's a recurring problem. What made Yellowstone a fun show, was that the entire Dutton family dynamic was pure insanity. Dutton Senior was an insane b******. Beth is a psycho b****. Rip is so deep in Stockholm he doesn't have a syndrome, he has an entire personality! Jamie is a mess. It's hard to say if I feel sorry for how shitty he's treated by his insane family members, or if I think he deserves it for being so spineless. None of these people are healthy. None of them are 'good' people, but damn if they aren't entertaining. This show is crystallized dysfunction and I watched it avidly just to see what wild crazy thing happens next. None of that applies to Kayce Dutton. Kayce Dutton is boring. He was so boring even Yellowstone seemed to realize he was boring and I feel like after season 3 he was barely in the last two seasons of Yellowstone which were all about the actually interesting characters and Kayce was just sort of there. And this show is okay at its best as a cop procedural show. 10 episodes isn't much. It teases some personal dramas in the secondary characters it doesn't really explore that much. Kayce is there and he's the same wet noodle he was before and the end result is that the show just isn't that good.

haven't watched it and have no plans to, but curious... do the writers understand that US Marshalls have a very specific set of duties and are not general law enforcement?

opal_lanterns Apr 10, 2026 +6
From what I’ve seen, they treat “Marshal” like a cowboy badge that lets you do literally anything. It’s Fantasy Federal Cops. Honestly, you’d rage-quit if jurisdiction accuracy matters.

ranhalt Apr 10, 2026 +3
I think the writers know it’s spelled Marshals.

Underwater_Karma Apr 11, 2026 +3
Did you watch Yellowstone? They treated "Livestock Enforcement" like SWAT and private army combined with a state paycheck Sheridan just writes whatever nonsense pops into his head, and he's not even consistent with his own BS. Picking at that scab is not how to watch his shows

RentalGore Apr 10, 2026 +6
No, and they also don’t deputize people by giving them a badge…it’s not 1875.

jumaccin Apr 10, 2026 +6
It’s a taylor Sheridan show so he just writes whatever propaganda is hot at the time. He also loves to add in the random hot girl to date his character

warlocktx Apr 10, 2026 +3
the only things I've seen from him are Hell or High Water and Wind River, which both were pretty good. Everything he's written for TV sounds like western soap operas

Lord0fHats Apr 10, 2026 +7
They basically are. Except for Landman. Landman is just oil company propaganda disguised as a TV show.

Those and Sicario are his best pieces of work. Mayor of Kingstown is more in line with those than most of his other stuff if you want a tv show in their vein.

SquadPoopy Apr 10, 2026 +4
The best way I’ve heard his shows described is prestige TV for old conservatives who watched an episode of The Wire during a free HBO weekend and liked the aesthetic of quality TV but not the questions it made them ask.

taylor Sheridan has no involvement with this show

he's the EP

vancouverliving420 Apr 11, 2026 +2
they give those away as vanity credits all the time
2
FX114 Apr 10, 2026 -3
That can just mean he developed the show with no active involvement once it actually went into production.
-3
vancouverliving420 Apr 11, 2026 +1
apparently he didnt even do that he just told paramount he was okay with them making the show

FX114 Apr 11, 2026 +4
If it's a spinoff using the world and characters he did make, that technically counts as development.
4
Madreese Apr 10, 2026 +4
He's listed as an executive producer of it.

mike10dude Apr 10, 2026 +3
He is still not supposed to have any sort of involvement with it They sometimes just hand that credit over to people when they use characters that they created I remember people saying that josh whedon would also have that on the new buffy if it happened too

A Taylor Sheridan show is bad? I'm shocked.

A listnookor thinks a Taylor Sheridan show is bad? Shocking!

How truly bad is a tv show for someone that enjoyed Yellowstone to say it's bad? Holy shit.

ComputerDecent463 Apr 10, 2026 -1
There are a lot worse shows out there than Yellowstone. I think because this is Listnook people have to just hate the show because they perceive it to be right wing. If you actually watched you would see that John constantly takes shots at Republicans and then if you actually watched the finale, that’s about as woke as can be with what happens with the ranch. Minneapolis would be proud.

MaritimeRedditor Apr 10, 2026 +8
It started out with great promise and just went ass. And this isn't a right vs left political thing. The show was just stupid.

A lot of the problem was the people back when S1 was new saying that Yellowstone represented their ideals. Which like those people shut up about that as the show went on, but that there were people who praised the show and characters as their moral heroes colored a lot of how other people reacted to the show. And to be fair I can make a lot of complaints about the many implications of plot points Sheridan puts in many of his shows, but it seems obvious to me that Yellowstone was a show about an insanely dysfunctional family led by an abusive a****** who is not a role model was always what Yellowstone was. Some people just suck at media literacy and saw a show that seemed like it was casting Amon Bundy as a hero and praised it for that even though that's not at all what it's about.

I get why it’s not landing for some people, especially if they were expecting more Yellowstone energy. Ranch life, hidden dead bodies, politics, family drama... But, I actually kind of like that it’s doing its own thing… the relationship with his son feels more featured. And, the focus on the reserve and the coworker dynamics adds a layer that typical procedurals don’t really have. It’s definitely not perfect, nor my favourite show... but the negative outpouring is kinda shocking to me. Perhaps my expectations for it were lower ?

It is Seal Team in Montana but Luke Grimes is no David Boreanaz.

Yeah, I watched ten minutes of the pilot and tapped out really quick. Taylor Sheridan's shows are a guilty pleasure of mine and as hokey as they can be, the production value is always decent and the shows have a distinct feel about them. Marshalls didn't have that; like you said, outside of the scenery, it's just a bland CBS procedural. Question for those still watching though: are Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty being given anything to do? I liked them a lot in Yellowstone and their inclusion is why I gave Marshalls a shot to begin with.

Just another shoot'em up cop show. Not one of Sheridan's best

I haven't watched anything else he's been in that I know of, but the actor that plays the leader of the team may be the worst actor I've ever seen.

it doesn't really bother me, I just watch this background noise

Couldn't make it through the first episode. I'm so sick and tired of unnatural forced exposition dialogues. "hey buddy, remember we were navy seals?", "Yo bud, you always were the best shot in the navy seals, where we served together", "mate, i quit the navy seals so i wont have to shoot anybody", "this is X, he was a hot shot in the navy seals, where we served together"

I watched the first episode and it wasn't great. I didn't watch Yellowstone or any of the other shows in that universe though. I like Arielle Kebbel so I gave it a shot but not worth adding it to my list.
