He also rewrote Killers of the Flower Moon

eidbio Mar 23, 2026 +135
He does a lot of ghostwriting.

WorldEaterYoshi Mar 23, 2026 +171
That makes so much sense because Killers was the best and I love PTA.
171
Iginlas_4head_Crease Mar 24, 2026 -12
To me its one of the worst Scorsese movies. PTA is a little too abstract to me. Much more a fan of Scorsese earlier work like the departed and goodfellas, wolf of Wall Street
-12
Givingtree310 Mar 24, 2026 +217
We live in a world where The Departed and Wolf of Wall Street is now considered Scorsese’s earlier years. I’m tired boss
217
AlterMyStateOfMind Mar 24, 2026 +45
I'm shocked lmao. Like I know they are older films by now but he's been making films since the 70s 😭
45
veryverythrowaway Mar 24, 2026 +11
And he’s done everything! He had a hit family film decades after his gritty seventies movies.
11
AlterMyStateOfMind Mar 24, 2026 +8
Hugo was so good! I hope we get another similar film from him before he retires or passes.
8
gildedbluetrout Mar 24, 2026
God Hugo ruled. That, Avatar and Pina are the only cinematic 3D films that felt essential viewing to me.
0
assumeyouknownothing Mar 24, 2026 +10
Arguably, I would say *Taxi Driver* & *Raging Bull* were hist best films. His entire filmography is excellent. But I believe those two films, the former especially have been the most innovative in cinema
10
AlterMyStateOfMind Mar 24, 2026 +5
I wouldn't even begin to try to decide what his best films are since he has done so many genres and different films but I won't argue that those are probably his most influential.
5
Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Mar 24, 2026 +1
Add Goodfelllas and I’m with you
1
CardAble6193 Mar 24, 2026 +1
if only Matty hire Herrmann and jam 3 or more tracks to mix stuff up , it d be prefect cinema
1
amccune Mar 24, 2026
He’s my favorite director and I still see him as up and down in his catalog. He’s almost streaky? He has good runs and then he has a few bad runs of movies (sorry, for me he’s on a bad runs right now). Big fan of Tax Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas (fav), C***** and the Departed (I consider them a trilogy). Gangs of New York and the Aviator are fun. Really didn’t like Silence or the Irishman. Honestly, haven’t been amazed by anything in a while. I even read Killers of the Flower Moon and wanted to like it, it just didn’t work for me.
0
Iginlas_4head_Crease Mar 24, 2026 +6
Earlier than now. Departed is like 20 years old lol
6
Philoffosy Mar 24, 2026 +13
sure but like usually when people talk about his early works they mean mean streets, alice doesnt live here anymore, taxi driver
13
PropaneSalesTx Mar 24, 2026 +1
One being a remake to boot.
1
MrONegative Mar 24, 2026 +22
What a wild take. Wolf of Wall Street is one of his EARLIER works? And you should look into the perspective KOTFM was from before the rewrite. He might’ve made the film less “fun” for you, but actually saved its meaning and impact.
22
Simmons54321 Mar 24, 2026 +4
His work in the 1970s must be considered pre-early then. Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, whatev
4
Massive_Weiner Mar 24, 2026 +7
Just wait until you watch The Age of Innocence.
7
Old_Butterfly9649 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Scorsese’s earlier work like the departed and wolf of wall street!.LOL.
3
FastThoughtProcessor Mar 24, 2026 +2
I think fot a 3 hour plus film, Killers of Flower Moon was pretty well written, and I did not spot any idras that were too abstract for anyone to understand there. Writing and making movies are two thing, that film was written by PTA but it screamed Martin.
2
MobileAtmosphere775 Mar 24, 2026 +2
God on this subreddit you really can say anything positive about a movie at all and are minutes away from someone replying "actually it was shit"
2
elpajaroquemamais Mar 24, 2026 +2
Lol at the departed being early.
2
Batboy3000 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Wolf is great, but I found Killers’ story to be much more impactful and resonated more with some of the characters, especially Mollie - same with The Irishman. There were moments in Killers that struck me emotionally like the endings of Raging Bull and Last Temptation of Christ
2
pgm123 Mar 24, 2026 +6
The rumor is that's why the credited screen writer didn't do any campaigning for the award.
6
_Vaudeville_ Mar 23, 2026 +142
Top 3 Scorsese in my opinion so no issues with this!
142
multiplebaskets Mar 23, 2026 +10
The Last Waltz is number 1 for me
10
tvcneverdie Mar 24, 2026 +1
That load of booger sugar stuck in Neil Young's nose is one of the most powerful characters in film history
1
-imbe- Mar 23, 2026 +3
I agree
3
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 +66
That is a WILD take. Absolutely wild. It doesn’t make my top ten for him
66
Lord_Doofy Mar 23, 2026 +303
It’s almost as if opinions can be different
303
Lemonjib Mar 23, 2026 +189
WILD.

Calling it a "WILD take" is literally mocking it.
34
babypunching101 Mar 23, 2026 +11
Calling it wild i simply saying it's uncommon or unusual. Given Scorsese's resume, that's a pretty reasonable claim.
11
ArryPotta Mar 23, 2026 +1
How soft are you?
1
arul20 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Yer a HARD man ArryPotta
3
fetusswami Mar 23, 2026 -4
Bud, please check who I am replying to.
-4
arul20 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Calling opinions stupid is not the same as respecting them. Or is this part of the new timeline we're on now?
2
MrBigChest Mar 23, 2026 -16
Opinions obviously very from person to person but I also think it’s a bit of an overreaction to put his most recent movie on such a high pedestal considering how recently it came out compared to how long and prolific of a career Marty has had.
-16
theonewhoknock_s Mar 23, 2026 +19
Who cares? I can put whatever I want in my top 3,5 etc. Watch me say Hugo is the best Scorsese film.
19
RobertJ93 Mar 24, 2026 +2
W-I-L-D.
2
subjectmatterexport Mar 24, 2026 +2
I would also like to state my completely subjective opinion that Wild Wild West was Scorsese’s best
2
deadspacekillers Mar 24, 2026 +1
Honestly I f****** love Hugo.
1
jerrrrremy Mar 24, 2026 +1
Hugo is f****** amazing and anyone who says otherwise hasn't seen it.
1
Lord_Doofy Mar 23, 2026 +5
It’s not a debate about which movie is his best, it’s just a guy saying which one he personally enjoyed the most. Not everything needs to be ranked on an objective scale
5
NephewChaps Mar 23, 2026 +5
Silence is my favorite Scorsese film and I don't give a single f*** to what anyone thinks about it
5
sexmath Mar 23, 2026 -7
In my subjective opinion, it is objectively a bad film.
-7
escoemartinez Mar 23, 2026 +1
Agree. with the subject matter it would have fared better as a TV show instead we got a rushed ending to glance over the atrocities that took place.
1
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 -54
They can but in this case it’s an important and under told story and unfortunately not Scorsese’s best. I can’t see a reasonable way to rank it above Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Departed, C*****, etc
-54
Lord_Doofy Mar 23, 2026 +33
They personally enjoyed it more than those movies, is that a good enough reason for you?
33
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 -16
Yeah of course. I’m just trying to discuss. Jesus
-16
airjunkie Mar 23, 2026 +6
I don't think calling someone else's take wild then saying the film isn't even in your top ten without any form of analysis is really a form of reasonable discussion
6
smallbluetext Mar 24, 2026 +2
People are downvoting your opinion and acting better than you for supporting another guys opinion. Its two opinions folks. Classic reddit.
2
AimToJump Mar 23, 2026 -7
It’s almost as if you can’t discuss criticism on a default sub. U/lord_doofy 🫵 suck
-7
AFellowCanadianGuy Mar 23, 2026 -24
Someone saying 1+1=4 doesn’t make it correct
-24
stankyconstitution Mar 23, 2026 +18
These are movies, not numbers :)
18
Lord_Doofy Mar 23, 2026 +7
While that is true, I don’t see how that’s relevant to the conversation whatsoever
7
Ericzzz Mar 23, 2026 +7
Lily Gladstone’s performance in Killers is one of the best in Scorsese’s entire body of work. I would have no problem placing it in contention with any of those movies, if only for Gladstone’s work.
7
smallbluetext Mar 24, 2026 +1
I really didnt get that from the movie. She wasnt bad im not saying that. Just a lot of her being comatose and bedridden acting which is minimal to me.
1
Stingray88 Mar 23, 2026 -1
I gotta be honest, her performance didn’t really do much for me. I didn’t hate it by any means but I don’t really get the high praise either.
-1
raimibonn Mar 23, 2026 +4
Taste is very much subjective. For example, I don't really care about *The Departed*.
4
likekoolaid Mar 23, 2026
couldn’t be me. my taste is domjective and the departed rules
0
ThePhunkyPharaoh Mar 23, 2026 +1
Hot Rod is in my top 5 movies of all time. I know it is not an objectively good movie, but I love it. Not everything is based on Letterbox reviews. People love some movies that I don’t like and hate movies that I love, there’s no reason to be found
1
pgm123 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Cool beans
1
Troyabedinthemornin Mar 23, 2026 +1
No mention of after hours? Casual. /s
1
AWholeLottaRed Mar 23, 2026 +39
It’s a fantastic film. It’s not personally in my top 3 but it’s not that wild.
39
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 +16
I think it would have been fantastic with tighter editing. It had such an important story and all the elements but it was loose and unfocused and really plodding
16
BlueVelvetFrank Mar 23, 2026 +21
Easily could’ve cut a half hour.
21
Kind_Resort_9535 Mar 23, 2026 +11
Same with the Irishman
11
KingUnderpants728 Mar 23, 2026 +9
I agree. Really liked the story but the run time killed it for me. I love Scorsese and am a big movie guy, but the last 45 min felt like 2 hours to me. Really drug at the end.
9
HenryDorsettCase47 Mar 23, 2026 +3
Loose and unfocused describes most of his films, even his greatest. That’s kind of his thing. He even said *The Departed* was his first film with a plot. Usually the structure is a bit “this happened and then this happened and then this happened…” with a tighter focus on the characters rather than an overarching story.
3
BestShaunaEU Mar 23, 2026 +9
I find that Goodfellas and Raging Bull are both rather tight
9
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 24, 2026 +1
What I mean is he could trim easily 30-45 minutes off Killers and not would make the movie a lot better.
1
PG4PM Mar 23, 2026 +2
Every Scorsese movie ever
2
othersbeforeus Mar 23, 2026 +12
It’s WILD that someone else can like a movie more than you. WIIIIIIILLLLLLDDDDDD
12
Hajile_S Mar 23, 2026 +5
Honestly, that’s a wilder take.
5
ArryPotta Mar 23, 2026 +3
It wasn't great.
3
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 +1
What’s your top ten for him?
1
Hajile_S Mar 23, 2026 +3
I mean...fair enough, hah. As I take a gander, *Killers* (or any movie in my rough top 10) could quickly fall out if I liked it just a bit less. I need to revisit some that I haven't seen for an odd decade or so, but a quick and dirty list (which certainly has its own hot takes) might be: *Taxi Driver* *The Age of Innocence* *Goodfellas* *Silence* *Killers of the Flower Moon* *Raging Bull* *After Hours* *The Last Temptation of Christ* *Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore* *The Irishman* And you know, I'm probably more liable to throw on *The Departed* or *The Wolf of Wall Street* than many of these. Point being that it's a tough top 10. Still have to see *Who's That Knocking,* *Boxcar Bertha*, *New York, New York*, and *Kundun.*
3
KendalBoy Mar 23, 2026 +7
Where is C*****?
7
Hajile_S Mar 23, 2026 +2
Hanging right outside of there. Honestly I did that one pretty dirty by watching it on a plane. Definitely deserves a rewatch.
2
KendalBoy Mar 23, 2026 +6
You’re in for a treat! Sharon Stone is so incredible, it might lead you to watch her in Muse next, and wonder if it’s a true story.
6
hoopleheaddd Mar 23, 2026 +5
I’ll give you credit for including After Hours but having Silence and the Irishman and no C***** is a wild take.
5
NephewChaps Mar 23, 2026 +1
I think having C***** over The Irishman, and specially over Silence, is the real wild take
1
prosfromdover Mar 23, 2026 +2
Kundun is top three for me.
2
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 24, 2026 +1
If you swap good fellas and age if innocence and killers with the departed that’s nearly my list
1
wintermute000 Mar 24, 2026 +1
You forgot about the king of comedy
1
thabasedwoodie Mar 23, 2026 +6
Gatekeeping an opinion is the wildest take of them all lmao. Hell, looking at my letterboxd it’s one of the 3 Scorsese flicks I’ve given 5 stars so f*** off old man.
6
ArryPotta Mar 23, 2026 -2
Movie was boring as f***. Why do you care that someone disagrees with someone? Someone shares an opinion. Someone shares a different opinion. Reddit: How dare you gatekeep opinions!!! Maybe it's just two people having a f****** conversation online, and they don't need your useless peanut gallery comments. Either add to their conversation, or shut it. You could have literally just included the second sentence, and your comment would have been valuable.
-2
Blursed_Pencil Mar 24, 2026 +5
I kinda feel like you are more upset than any of the people you are talking about
5
ArryPotta Mar 25, 2026 +1
When did I claim anyone else was upset and imply I wasn't? I said this stupid premise that offering counter opinions to people is not gatekeeping opinions, and ya, it annoys the f*** out of me.
1
thabasedwoodie Mar 23, 2026 +2
Yikes. Grass is right outside but I see you’re already shucking corn on this march evening.
2
ArryPotta Mar 24, 2026 -2
Soft.
-2
cire1184 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Wild. Absolutely wild.
1
Known-Exam-9820 Mar 24, 2026 +1
It’s an incredibly powerful film but lacks the action of his more populist works. The funeral scene is one of the most beautiful depictions of death put to film. I almost ugly cried in the theater
1
FistThePooper6969 Mar 23, 2026 -3
Growing up is realizing how bad a lot of people’s tastes are
-3
JasonABCDEF Mar 23, 2026
Top three? Are you young and just experiencing recency bias? Like have you seen raging bull, taxi driver, Goodfellas?
0
_Vaudeville_ Mar 24, 2026 +5
Yep I’ve seen them all and watched Scorsese films for ages. I just think Killers and the Irishman both touched on something so powerful when it comes to our own mortality that his other films haven’t.
5
JasonABCDEF Mar 24, 2026 +2
Ok I actually think The Irishman might be a top three for me.
2
Continental_op_xx Mar 23, 2026 -4
To its detriment. The book was exquisite; the movie, a slog.
-4
YoungKeys Mar 23, 2026 +37
iirc both Leo DiCaprio and Scorsese didn’t want to do a white savior film, so they reached out to PTA to rewrite it
37
RegularOrMenthol Mar 23, 2026 +10
I’m pretty sure the rewrite was still mainly Eric Roth. PTA may have done some small stuff at the end, but Roth has talked about how he did the whole restructuring of the movie with Scorcese and DiCaprio.

Nothing-Is-Real-Here Mar 23, 2026 +24
Nah OBAA didn't need anything cut. Also since when are they getting way too long? This is PTA's first almost 3 hour film since Magnolia which was his 3rd feature over 25 years ago.
24
FrameworkisDigimon Mar 23, 2026 -1
A film doesn't have to be over three hours to be too long.
-1
Nothing-Is-Real-Here Mar 23, 2026 +4
Yes, but OP is clearly implying that nearing 3 hours to over 3 is the case.
4
VitaminTea Mar 23, 2026 +6
What should have been cut?
6
YoungKeys Mar 23, 2026 +8
They didn’t want to do the “white savior” film trope in the screenplay and film. That has nothing to do with the ethnicity of the writer, but a specific film trope they wanted to avoid in the content of the film.
8
WorldEaterYoshi Mar 23, 2026 -1
Stop recycling internet opinions. If you're complaining about a movie being too long then you just don't like watching movies. "Can I have a little less please?" Seriously dumb take.
-1
orwll Mar 24, 2026 +1
> If you're complaining about a movie being too long then you just don't like watching movies. This is the easily worst take in a thread of questionable takes
1
Covverkin Mar 23, 2026
Lol wtf? You’re saying if someone doesn’t want to watch a lengthy movie, they don’t like movies?
0
WorldEaterYoshi Mar 23, 2026 -2
That's exactly what I'm saying. You could split the movie up if you have to but saying that artists are full of themselves for making their movies longer is ironically very entitled. If you don't want to give up the time, shut your mouth and just don't show up like a normal person.
-2
Covverkin Mar 23, 2026 +3
So every artist who makes a long movie does so without any sort of self-indulgence and a viewer who doesn’t like every long movie should just get bent, right?
3
tulkunking Mar 23, 2026 +4
I thought the movie was better than the book
4
QueefBeefCletus Mar 24, 2026 +1
Between Irishman and Killers I hope someone tells Scorsese to keep it under 2 hours from now on. They don't have the freight train momentum his older flicks like C***** had to justify the length.
1
Inthehead35 Mar 24, 2026 -1
Really, damn, movie still wasn't good
-1
Early-Piano2647 Mar 24, 2026
That explains why it was so good! Thank god he didn’t hire Tony Kushner.
0
BlastMyLoad Mar 23, 2026 -2
Oof. I really disliked that movie
-2
PalmTreeMonkey Mar 23, 2026 +295
When do y’all think we’ll see this in theatres? 2027?
295
SteveBorden Mar 23, 2026 +139
Very hopefully December this year but given how long Scorsese’s post production takes now probably 2027
139
64BitRatchet Mar 23, 2026 +74
Definitely not December, it'd be going up against both Dune and Avengers, let alone Jumanji and Werewulf. It'd have a hard time getting screens.
74
Marsuello Mar 23, 2026 +3
Wait…we’re getting another Jumanji?? I actually have loved the reboots so this makes me very excited
3
64BitRatchet Mar 23, 2026 +4
Yup, it releases the weekend before Dunesday, same cast and director as well.
4
Marsuello Mar 24, 2026 +1
This has me overjoyed
1
ChaseChaserChased Mar 24, 2026 +1
It was delayed... till... December 25th.
1
jonmuller Mar 23, 2026 +18
That wouldn't matter at all for a film like this. Just depends if it's ready in time.
18
64BitRatchet Mar 23, 2026 +36
Not having screens wouldn't matter? It'd likely be the 5th or 6th choice for most theaters over the holidays.
36
jonmuller Mar 23, 2026 +26
This is an Oscar player and releasing it in limited release in December and expanding in January is typical of these types of films.
26
64BitRatchet Mar 23, 2026 +11
That could work definitely, but a wide release in December is definitely a no-go this year.
11
AztecHoodlum Mar 23, 2026 +12
Ain’t no way in hell this December. It just started shooting last month. I’m betting it shoots for at least another two months. That leaves him half a year for editing. Both him and Thelma are both well into their eighties and have taken their time editing the last few films now. This is definitely going to be a 2027 film.
12
jerryspringles Mar 23, 2026 +3
lol they are currently filming it… absurd to think that would come out this year. No “lengthy” post production needed
3
pgm123 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Given the length of time from first photo to movie release for Killers of the Flower Moon, I'm going to say 18 months (maybe more like 20)
1
Emperor-Octavian Mar 23, 2026 +6
For sure. He always takes like a year post production. Hoping since this is (presumably) a smaller movie it might not take as long though
6
homelander_30 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Late 2027
2
ElectricalDark8280 Mar 24, 2026 +1
We’re taking about a film that nobody has seen and has no release date?!? F***, I’m out of here
1
TripleThreatTua Mar 23, 2026 +226
Supposedly he also did an uncredited rewrite on Killers of the Flower Moon
226
AztecHoodlum Mar 23, 2026 +112
Yes. PTA himself confirmed this
112
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 +61
And Napoleon. He’s on a tear of ghost writing for the world’s greatest filmmakers
61
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 +10
Ghost writing mucus that end up being mid? What must they have been before
10
CountJohn12 Mar 23, 2026 +28
The humor in it is very PTA. All the cuckold stuff and the things Napoleon yells when he's frustrated sound like Daniel Plainview or Reynolds Woodcock.
28
FlintOwl Mar 24, 2026 +8
"Destiny has brought me this lamb chop" was so obviously written by Mr. I drink your milkshake
8
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 -13
I’m sorry to go against the grain, but I think Napoleon is one of the greatest films ever made
-13
Foxtrot434 Mar 24, 2026 +4
Abel Gance was a hell of a filmmaker.
4
HoneyBucketsOfOats Mar 23, 2026 +6
I wanted to love it but it was just so poorly realized. Also the f****** sniper just killed it for me.
6
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 -3
I loved how it was realized. It’s one of the funniest films I’ve ever seen, overflowing with the feebleness of being human. The inescapable desire everyone has to be liked and cherished. Taking enemy lands but more concerned with your older wife cucking you. I adored it. The sniper didn’t even bother me because Plunket sniped a French general and his aide in the early 1800s using the Baker rifle. All Ridley did was have a character strap his eyeglass to his rifle. Barely period inaccurate, completely acceptable for a fictionalized account of a life, for me anyway
-3
woemcats Mar 23, 2026 +1
Should I watch the theatrical or the Apple TV edit?
1
Natural-Strike-3215 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Nah napoleon was actually awful
2
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026
Not to me.
0
Natural-Strike-3215 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I'm Glad you enjoyed it.
1
CountJohn12 Mar 23, 2026 -2
Correct opinion, found someone else finally
-2
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 +2
It’s one of Ridley’s greatest achievements. It makes me laugh and cry. The closing monologue from Josephine beyond the grave is remarkable. Their push and pull power dynamic is hilarious and overflowing with life. The sequence where they stay up all night arguing, flipping the power dynamic back and forth is unbelievably funny and tender. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen and it being reviled makes me feel even more certain that it’s his late career Blade Runner. The Counselor is another totally misunderstood master work from his late career. If he’s being trashy and/or funny, it seems that very few people get it, but I am one! Loved seeing GDT coming out in support of The Counselor as one of his favorite films this century. When Ridley passes, one or two decades from now, his career will be reevaluated with more warmth and understanding
2
CountJohn12 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Agree it's extremely funny which seemed to go over a lot of people's heads. And legitimately one of the greatest visual achievements I've ever seen, like Barry Lyndon tier. With Blade Runner the original cut was significantly diminished which explains it but even the theatrical cut was great here. To be fair it did get in the 60's on metacritic so there were some positive reviews but the user reviews were so overwhelmingly negative and I was blindsided by it. Especially since it was for very dumb reasons (no French accents, not enough battle scenes) and a bunch of military history dorks coming out of the woodwork to nitpick the historical accuracy and complain that it made Napoleon "look bad".

I doubt he earns that much doing his own movies so he's likely doing ghost writing on the side to earn a living
-1
RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 +23
He earns millions from his own films lol
23
Nothing-Is-Real-Here Mar 23, 2026 +4
Sure, but I imagine he likely lives a fairly expensive life. 3-10 million per film (assuming this number is even accurate) he makes every 5 years isn't like a WHOLE lot of money if you're living a rich lifestyle. I don't think someone like Anderson is going to just doctor scripts uncredited just for the heck of it.

RobertHarmon Mar 23, 2026 +7
Oh he’s DEFINITELY getting paid for rewrites, but I wouldn’t imagine more than 1 million max per script, but he’s probably made 15-30 million from his own productions
7
Nothing-Is-Real-Here Mar 23, 2026 -1
I am somehow doubtful of that number. Are we discussing across his career or per production? We're not even sure how much he gets in royalties, especially for a film like OBAA which allegedly did not earn a profit

You should be. We’re discussing the unknown personal finances of a stranger

A rewrite has never been more publicized

Winning an Oscar is not going to reverse that trend

Thats a wild combo. PTA rewriting a Scorsese script is like getting a remix from a different GOAT. Would kill to read both drafts.

uglylittledogboy Mar 24, 2026 +9
Scorsese has not been a writer on the majority of his movies, including this one.

Paul Thomas Anderson did start as a pseudo Scorsese clone of sorts. Boogie Nights is a film like Goodfellas that swaps out Gangster/Mob industry excess for Adult Entertainment industry excess. He owes a lot of his filmography style to Scorsese in a way. As do many people. There is a reason he's still one of the most important and influential American filmmakers outside Steven Spielberg and 70s Francis Ford Coppola.

harry_powell Mar 23, 2026 +37
PTA was equally part Scorsese part Robert Altman when he started.

rube_X_cube Mar 23, 2026 +61
Boogie Nights bears a striking resemblance to Goodfellas. The story structure, camera work, use of music, etc. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s definitely its own movie, but it’s really remarkable how similar those movies are in so many ways.

Odd_Peanut_5666 Mar 23, 2026 +9
goodfellas with a decent sprinkle of altman’s nashville

rube_X_cube Mar 24, 2026 +4
I think you’re right, I need to rewatch that movie. And you know what, now that you mention it, Altman really isn’t brought up that often anymore. He used to be such a big deal when I was younger, seems like he’s mostly forgotten now, not sure why.

The last scene in *Boogie Nights* is a direct homage to *Raging Bull*
23
dapala1 Mar 23, 2026 +3
Boogie Nights completely copied the pacing of Goodfellas.

CountJohn12 Mar 23, 2026 +4
I think his more recent feels a lot more Kubrick or Robert Altman than Scorsese
4
CosmicEveStardust Mar 23, 2026 +2
Boogie Nights and PTA as a whole is much much more like Robert Altman mixed with Johnathan Demme than anything Scorsese ever made.

kpeds45 Mar 23, 2026 +4
It's so Goodfellas. More than Altman, it's Goodfellas.
4
TerminatorReborn Mar 24, 2026 +1
Boogie Nights is blatant homage of Goodfellas (the one short opening scene is basically telling you that already) but the rest of his movies I don't see much Scorcese influence in them tbh.

This picture is gonna be one of those pictures they use for all news related to this movie just like they did with that one picture for Killers of the Flower Moon.

At this point PTA is singlehandedly ghost writing late period Scorsese
