I wouldn't even begin to try to decide what his best films are since he has done so many genres and different films but I won't argue that those are probably his most influential.

He’s my favorite director and I still see him as up and down in his catalog. He’s almost streaky? He has good runs and then he has a few bad runs of movies (sorry, for me he’s on a bad runs right now).
Big fan of Tax Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas (fav), C***** and the Departed (I consider them a trilogy). Gangs of New York and the Aviator are fun. Really didn’t like Silence or the Irishman. Honestly, haven’t been amazed by anything in a while.
I even read Killers of the Flower Moon and wanted to like it, it just didn’t work for me.

Loose and unfocused describes most of his films, even his greatest. That’s kind of his thing. He even said *The Departed* was his first film with a plot. Usually the structure is a bit “this happened and then this happened and then this happened…” with a tighter focus on the characters rather than an overarching story.

I mean...fair enough, hah. As I take a gander, *Killers* (or any movie in my rough top 10) could quickly fall out if I liked it just a bit less.
I need to revisit some that I haven't seen for an odd decade or so, but a quick and dirty list (which certainly has its own hot takes) might be:
*Taxi Driver*
*The Age of Innocence*
*Goodfellas*
*Silence*
*Killers of the Flower Moon*
*Raging Bull*
*After Hours*
*The Last Temptation of Christ*
*Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore*
*The Irishman*
And you know, I'm probably more liable to throw on *The Departed* or *The Wolf of Wall Street* than many of these. Point being that it's a tough top 10. Still have to see *Who's That Knocking,* *Boxcar Bertha*, *New York, New York*, and *Kundun.*

I loved how it was realized. It’s one of the funniest films I’ve ever seen, overflowing with the feebleness of being human. The inescapable desire everyone has to be liked and cherished. Taking enemy lands but more concerned with your older wife cucking you. I adored it.
The sniper didn’t even bother me because Plunket sniped a French general and his aide in the early 1800s using the Baker rifle. All Ridley did was have a character strap his eyeglass to his rifle. Barely period inaccurate, completely acceptable for a fictionalized account of a life, for me anyway

It’s one of Ridley’s greatest achievements. It makes me laugh and cry. The closing monologue from Josephine beyond the grave is remarkable. Their push and pull power dynamic is hilarious and overflowing with life. The sequence where they stay up all night arguing, flipping the power dynamic back and forth is unbelievably funny and tender. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen and it being reviled makes me feel even more certain that it’s his late career Blade Runner. The Counselor is another totally misunderstood master work from his late career. If he’s being trashy and/or funny, it seems that very few people get it, but I am one! Loved seeing GDT coming out in support of The Counselor as one of his favorite films this century. When Ridley passes, one or two decades from now, his career will be reevaluated with more warmth and understanding

Agree it's extremely funny which seemed to go over a lot of people's heads. And legitimately one of the greatest visual achievements I've ever seen, like Barry Lyndon tier. With Blade Runner the original cut was significantly diminished which explains it but even the theatrical cut was great here.
To be fair it did get in the 60's on metacritic so there were some positive reviews but the user reviews were so overwhelmingly negative and I was blindsided by it. Especially since it was for very dumb reasons (no French accents, not enough battle scenes) and a bunch of military history dorks coming out of the woodwork to nitpick the historical accuracy and complain that it made Napoleon "look bad".

I doubt he earns that much doing his own movies so he's likely doing ghost writing on the side to earn a living

He earns millions from his own films lol

Sure, but I imagine he likely lives a fairly expensive life. 3-10 million per film (assuming this number is even accurate) he makes every 5 years isn't like a WHOLE lot of money if you're living a rich lifestyle.
I don't think someone like Anderson is going to just doctor scripts uncredited just for the heck of it.

Oh he’s DEFINITELY getting paid for rewrites, but I wouldn’t imagine more than 1 million max per script, but he’s probably made 15-30 million from his own productions

I am somehow doubtful of that number. Are we discussing across his career or per production? We're not even sure how much he gets in royalties, especially for a film like OBAA which allegedly did not earn a profit

Thats a wild combo. PTA rewriting a Scorsese script is like getting a remix from a different GOAT. Would kill to read both drafts.

Scorsese has not been a writer on the majority of his movies, including this one.

Paul Thomas Anderson did start as a pseudo Scorsese clone of sorts. Boogie Nights is a film like Goodfellas that swaps out Gangster/Mob industry excess for Adult Entertainment industry excess. He owes a lot of his filmography style to Scorsese in a way. As do many people. There is a reason he's still one of the most important and influential American filmmakers outside Steven Spielberg and 70s Francis Ford Coppola.

PTA was equally part Scorsese part Robert Altman when he started.

Boogie Nights bears a striking resemblance to Goodfellas. The story structure, camera work, use of music, etc. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s definitely its own movie, but it’s really remarkable how similar those movies are in so many ways.

I think you’re right, I need to rewatch that movie.
And you know what, now that you mention it, Altman really isn’t brought up that often anymore. He used to be such a big deal when I was younger, seems like he’s mostly forgotten now, not sure why.

Boogie Nights and PTA as a whole is much much more like Robert Altman mixed with Johnathan Demme than anything Scorsese ever made.

It's so Goodfellas. More than Altman, it's Goodfellas.

Boogie Nights is blatant homage of Goodfellas (the one short opening scene is basically telling you that already) but the rest of his movies I don't see much Scorcese influence in them tbh.
