'Massive operation': Canadian driller, shipper enlisted to help tap Greenland oil
The promotional video shows a small creek trickling through a mossy patch in an otherwise brown, barren landscape, icebergs looming just offshore.

Greenland keeps getting discussed like a prize instead of a place with actual people

Do you want oil on your pizza, or people?

Most of Greenland is empty, so it's just a reality.

Alcogel Mar 29, 2026 +13
The people of Greenland has decided to halt all oil exploration licenses, empty or not, so it’s just a reality.

How many people are on your property? Be a shame if someone seized it

If oil and rare minerals ever become profitable in Greenland, there should be strict requirements to hire and train Greenlanders. It could create real prospects, a diversified economy with well-paid jobs, instead of continued reliance on fishing and Danish block grants. Saying this as a Dane who cares a lot about Greenland and it's people.

Guess we all know now why US is interested in seizing Greenland from Denmark

Old_Soc Mar 29, 2026 +41
They are only interested in resources. All this bullshit they are doing around the globe is for resources.

seXJ69 Mar 29, 2026 +11
It's mostly to distract from the Trumpstein files. The ones where Agolf Von Shitzenpantz raped and killed kids.

Lets see. Attack Venezuela, steal oil and gold Attack Iran, oil involved Threatens to Annex Greenland, which now has oil Threatens to Annex Canada and funding Alberta separatist movement, oil involved

the issue is, people arent even against selling their ressources, their fair price is just not "fair" enough for the us

Y8ser Mar 29, 2026 +1
No all this bullshit is about Trump and his buddies adding to their wealth and to distract from the Epstein files.

Old_Soc Mar 29, 2026 +1
I wonder if the people are going to turn against the Trump regime and all of a sudden Iran is the "good guy"
1
Y8ser Mar 29, 2026 +4
Definitely not the good guys for sure, but they didn't start the war. Had Trump not blown up the nuclear agreement that the Obama administration negotiated, the world probably wouldn't be in this mess at all.

Two things can be bad at the same time, sometimes even more than two.

I mean who the hell wants American healthcare to begin with?

I'm sorry, but the 7th word in your sentence was redacted so I don't know what you're talking about. /s

This has been known since day 1.

This will be challenging, drilling is one thing that will need exceptional engineering, but shipping, thats another story alone.

Professional_Deer464 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Which Greenland banned in 2021. EDIT: This is based off of a license that predates the policy.

phoenix25 Mar 29, 2026 +2
> The land Greenland Energy plans to drill in is under licences belonging to its joint-venture partner, U.K.-based 80 Mile PLC, that predate the 2021 policy, so they are still valid.

Native peoples and locals have historically been displaced or marginalized when valuable resources are found on their lands. The exception would be when oil was discovered in middle eastern monarchies.

This strategic island keeps on increasing in value.

Rymbegla Mar 29, 2026 +1
Peter Thiel who has strong influence on DT want to build his dream city Praxis on Greenland. Maybe DT was offered the role as king - resources is just bonus.

CupEcstatic2721 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Perhaps Trump will have to accept that Greenland won't belong to the US. If there is oil there his offer will simply not be beneficial for Greenland
1
Irr3l3ph4nt Mar 29, 2026 +3
The oil isn't the American primary interest in Greenland. It's control over both ends of the NW passage that they want. That way Canada loses all leverage to control the passage since the US could just theoretically close it.
3
CupEcstatic2721 Mar 29, 2026 -6
I never said that was their interest, you basically explained why the Canadians are doing this. What I meant was if Greenland becomes powerful thanks to oil money, there will be no point for them to join the US
-6
Irr3l3ph4nt Mar 29, 2026 +5
I would counterargue, as a Canadian, that we have a substantial oil production, a G7 economy, allies all over the globe, and they're still trying us, meeting with our separatists and trying to foment pro-american movements.
5
CupEcstatic2721 Mar 29, 2026
I agree, but in this case it will be harder to do. I think it’s no coincidence that Canadian firms were chosen when there is a likelihood that the US might get bogged down in a military conflict with Iran
0
Irr3l3ph4nt Mar 29, 2026 +5
The fact that they chose a Canadian firm has way more to do with social acceptability and sending a message to the US that China is not going to be the principal interlocutor here, as they like to pretend.
5
CupEcstatic2721 Mar 29, 2026 +1
So, Canadian firms are basically the lesser of two evils that Trump can live with to leave Greenland alone

Thurak0 Mar 29, 2026 +1
What a world this has become... Greenland needs to consider if they find/drill for oil even if it means that the USA might invade them in the future.
1
CupEcstatic2721 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Essentially, yes. I don't know how appropriate it is here, but an analogy with the immune system and a tumor comes to mind: if the immune response exists but is weak it will actually promote tumor growth, if the immune response is strong it is capable of inhibiting tumor growth. I believe Greenland is hoping that the oil won’t just be another lure for a US invasion but will instead provide them with the means to fend off such attempts.

Zestyclose_Nature_13 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Can we at least please move past oil as a transportation fuel already. I don’t know how much longer I can check my emotions when it comes to the big truck, tiny p**** energy that has taken over our highways

Tapping Greenlands oil? Doesn't sound very renewable or green

Is it a yuge operation.

Trump won't be happy about this development.
