Agree and it's one of the best animation I seen so far in a long time from Star Wars.

The animation and art style is some of the best I’ve seen

The voice actor for maul is excellent as well.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be invested in. Maul? I don't care about his goal. He wants... revenge. And to achieve that he does... what exactly? Is the cop supposed to be the protagonist that I should root for? Because I don't care about him at all.
20
j_b_1983 Apr 14, 2026 +1
How does he get his revenge? By killing everyone??? That seems fairly obvious right?
1
kuhpunkt Apr 14, 2026 +9
But revenge against who? Like Palpatine... but what is he doing to achieve that? Like he's trying to convince that girl of something... for some reason. Killing everyone? Why? And again: what should I be invested in? Who should I root for?

Palpatine and Kenobi

Palpatine and Kenobi aren't protagonists in the show.
1
NubOnReddit 4 days ago +1
I meant who he wants revenge on
1
NoPossession9099 Apr 16, 2026 +1
I think the idea is that you are meant to feel a bit of sympathy for Maul. Like not majorly route for him but at least understand his PoV. He clearly wants to take over the crime syndicate and cause infighting so he can pick up the pieces and takeover. Yeah. He wants revenge against Palpatine & Obi-Wan. His hatred for them kept especially Obi kept him alive. He wants an apprentice (Devon), to help defeat Sidious. He knows he cannot do it alone thats why he wanted Ezra.
1
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +2
But I don't have much/any sympathy for Maul and I don't want him to lead a crime syndicate. There is no "Yay, Maul, go get it!" moment in the show for me.
2
NoPossession9099 Apr 16, 2026 +5
It all depends on if you're into the character or not. It seems very highly praised. We do know he becomes the leader of the shadow collective as you see him at the end of Solo. I think the show is pretty bad ass. Especially compared to the bs Disney usually churns out.
5
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026
Well, why should I be into the character? Why should I root for a bad guy who wants to be a criminal? It's not like he's Walter White, where it was easy to root for him for a while. And what about the cop? Should I like him? Because 4 episodes in and I couldn't care less about him.
0
NoPossession9099 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Because he is a cool character idk 🤷‍♂️ I'm not saying you should be into him but loads of villains are liked. Vader, Thanos, Joker ect. I find the cop pretty generic & bland. I mean he's alright, different from the good guys you usually see. But at the end of the day its up to you who you like in a show
3
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +1
Vader and the Joker aren't the protagonists of their own show.
1
NoPossession9099 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Joker had his own movies and the prequels was basically Vader's origin story.
3
NoPossession9099 Apr 16, 2026 +2
What do you think of Eeko the Jedi?
2
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +1
Don't care about him. Why should I? Like... he has no character. What do we know about him?
1
Mookies_Bett Apr 16, 2026 +2
Because he's badass and cool? Why does it have to be more complicated than that? He was cool in CW. He was cool in rebels. And he's cool now. That's literally it. He's a walking Aura farm with interesting powers and a lot of badass dialogue. I'm not really sure what more you need

Something to root for/care about...

So no answer then.

It’s a tragedy. It’s going to end poorly for everyone.

So can you tell me what I should be invested in? Who I should root for?

But that doesn't answer my question.

show is called Maul, if you dont care about him, why watch?
2
kuhpunkt 6 days ago -1
I didn't care much about Andor in the beginning. The show made me care about him. Like how often do I have to ask that question until somebody gives me a proper answer: What should I be invested in? Who should I root for?
-1
gridlinkedgabbleduck 5 days ago +2
That's an interesting and difficult question. When the show revolves around an "antihero" (I think people these days use the term incorrectly however. Tony Soprano, Jax Teller, walter White, and now Maul), I don't root for them. I'm invested in the story, which in this case, I find riveting. I love the side stories in Star Wars that enrich the Star Wars universe. Question, Are you familiar with how Maul has been involved in Star Wars after Episode One?
2
kuhpunkt 5 days ago
But what do you root for? Like what's the engagement? What do you want to happen? And yes, I have followed Maul's story. Didn't watch Clone Wars, but I watched enough videos about that. I watched Rebels.
0
gridlinkedgabbleduck 5 days ago +1
I guess I don't. Maybe Devon. I'm curious if she's going to turn out to become Darth Talon. That's interesting. I'm curious to see Maul's rise to where he was in Solo and then maybe see if this show leads up to his final showdown with Obi Wan. If one needs someone to root for, shows depicting a main character steeped in reverse morality might make it difficult. Since we know where Maul is headed, it's hard to root for him anyway. Well, for me at least. Don't you like watching just for the sake of seeing the story unfold?

Because I'm trying to have a conversation? What's so hard about answering a question about a TV show when we're on a TV sublistnook? But you can't do that... instead you insult me. Awesome. What a great person you are.

You're supposed to be invested that in the end the both have a common enemy, they both either want the empire gone or away from their business. It's a show about the aftermath of the birth of the empire and who it fucked everyone up. Mind you this is common from an Andor and clone wars fan so take it as if you will. Its fun to see how maul might be getting his new apprentice or at least be able to corrupt the padawan how he tried with Ahsoka. In the end we know how Maul story ends and I can't wait to see him f*** up or get fucked by the empire or by his hubris.
1
kuhpunkt Apr 18, 2026 -1
But I don't care about those characters... and I kinda dislike Maul, because he's a bad guy who wants to do bad things. I'm not even conflicted like I am with somebody like Walter White in Breaking Bad. On Andor they made me like Luthen and Cassian and Mon. They had noble goals. At times they made me even root for Dedra, because she's a great character. I get none of that from Maul. >Its fun to see how maul might be getting his new apprentice or at least be able to corrupt the padawan how he tried with Ahsoka. And why does he want a new apprentice? What's his goal? What's the point?

Ok brother it seems like you are looking for something else, Maul's story is about revenge and stubborness, refusal to learn/move on, he will never be a good guy or an option slightly better then the empire, not even an anti-hero. If you don't like maul as a character then you might want to skip the show mate. I don't feel that Maul is is a character with arcs/stories comparable to Walter or Andor and neither of these with eachother for that matter, it seems you pulled those names out of your ass cause "peak kino". Breaking bad is about greed, ego, hubris and not knowing when to stop, Andor is a story of how a rebellion is born even in a character who attempted accept the oppression they were in and to play by their rules only to find their own sense of righteousness and spark of rebellion. Don't know why you would bring them up with Maul. You might want rewatch those to get their point across and learn how to use these materials to compare the correctly other pieces of media.

And that again doesn't answer my question. >If you don't like maul as a character then you might want to skip the show mate. I don't feel that Maul is is a character with arcs/stories comparable to Walter or Andor and neither of these with eachother for that matter, it seems you pulled those names out of your ass cause "peak kino". I didn't pull anything out of my ass. I named a few characters, because that's what the whole thing is about. Why are you like this? >Breaking bad is about greed, ego, hubris and not knowing when to stop, Andor is a story of how a rebellion is born even in a character who attempted accept the oppression they were in and to play by their rules only to find their own sense of righteousness and spark of rebellion. Don't know why you would bring them up with Maul. You might want rewatch those to get their point across and learn how to use these materials to compare the correctly other pieces of media. Yes, Breaking Bad is about ego and all that stuff... but I was INVESTED, because the characters were interesting. I had somebody to root for and care about. Who should I root for in Maul? What should I be invested in? Is that question so hard to answer?

The show just isn't for you, and that's ok...

And another reply without answering the question. Like... how hard is to just say: "Hello, I'm Radical Ice. I like the show, because I'm invested in XYZ... I root for character XYZ and I hope they achieve their goal, because of reason XYZ."
0
Radical_Ice 4 days ago +1
It's a TV show, people shouldn't need to tell you who you should be invested in. That is something you should actually think about and decide for yourself. No one should tell you how to think or feel.... Do you like maul? Do you like daki? Do you like Devon? Do you like Lawson? Do you like the criminal underworld of Star wars? Do you like the dynamic between daki and Devon? Do you like the dynamic between maul and Devon, and her possible switch to the dark side? Do you like the father son dynamic with Lawson and his kid? There is a whole list of characters and stories that you can decide for yourself if they resonate with you. I like the character maul and I am interested in his rise to infamy in the criminal underworld. I think that is a cool untapped premise we haven't really seen. I'm also interested in the dynamic of daki and Devon. Will Devon switch to the dark side and possibly become Darth talon? What is going to happen to daki that ultimately leads to her corruption? Maybe it doesn't go that route but I'm genuinely interested in their story while also seeing maul just being an absolute savage. Those are the characters I like the most and I'm genuinely curious to see where their story goes.

Aside from the visuals, voice acting, and tone, this show is what The Book of Boba Fett should have been. I appreciate that they don’t sanitize Maul for people who need someone to “root” for. It’s closer to something like The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, or even Succession, where we’re following despicable, deeply flawed characters. It isn’t neutered for those who need a traditional hero to root for. It’s a crime boss story about criminals doing bad things to anyone who opposes them.

KamiNoItte 5 days ago +2
This. Was thinking in ep.2 this should have been how boba acted in bobf. Instead we just get “I’m a crime lord” lots of tell and no show. (And those f****** scooter brats, f****** please)

Okay Dave Filoni
32
Simple_Stick_2081 Apr 14, 2026 +6
tbh filoni knows how to write actual characters instead of just making cartoon villains in black robes
6
mildmichigan Apr 14, 2026 +11
Anytime Dave Filoni is the sole writer on a project, the character writing suffers. Comparing the writing team on Rebels to his solo episodes of Mandalorian & Ahsoka and its like night & day
11
Ok_History_7808 Apr 14, 2026 +6
Funny you say that when the entirety of Maul Shadow Lord so far is a cartoon villain in black robes who is constantly aura farming. The animation is good but the writing is ass and it feels like they are trying to force it to make Maul look cool
6
GrubHanser Apr 14, 2026 +12
The last 2 episodes were very solid. I am sold now.

I watched E1. It bored me.

TheArchitect_7 Apr 14, 2026 +8
Same. I don’t really get the over-the-top praise for the animation. It looks like action figures. After watching stuff like Arcane and Spiderverse, this animation style is trash. I don’t get it.
8
greenufo333 Apr 17, 2026 +5
Spiderverse is a movie with a budget of near 200 million and arcane has a budget of 250 million. Some of you really are morons
5
TheArchitect_7 Apr 17, 2026 +3
Arcane S1 was $80M. But yeah, you right, this League of Legends Netflix show could afford its animation because it’s one of the biggest IPs of one of the biggest companies in the world, unlike Star Wars, which is relatively unknown and held by this little indie shop called Disney.
3
greenufo333 Apr 17, 2026 +2
So every starwars show should have a 200 million budget? Should Lego starwars should have a billion dollar budget? The animation is fantastic in maul: shadowlord. Quit your bitchin
2
Connect-Plenty1650 Apr 14, 2026 +9
The animation is fine. But I don't watch animation for the animation, The story was bland. Nothing you've not seen hundred times before. Seasoned with dialogue that was probably written by some form of generation. It was noticeably bad. Every single phrase felt worn out. Smells like "content" instead of a serious show.
9
Eiden58 Apr 19, 2026 +1
It needs to be the highest budget and most advanced animation ever to look good? lol

SportNo5271 4 days ago +1
If you can make it to episode 4, you'll change your mind

Logondo Apr 14, 2026 +9
I’m good. I’m kinda Star Wars’d out. Darth Maul was good in the Clone Wars but his story is told.
9
Important-Daikon-670 Apr 16, 2026 +2
Literally. Why can’t they just do someone like darth bane or someone like that?
2
jawaismyhomeboy Apr 14, 2026 +5
Yeah the show is really really good. My favorite SW thing since Andor and I would say it's building up to be Andor level.
5
dravenonred Apr 14, 2026 +1
Andor was able to make the empire *actually scary* while showing their POV (the Thanos protagonist treatment) If Shadow Lord can do the same for Maul they'll be cooking.
1
jawaismyhomeboy Apr 14, 2026 +2
They definitely do that in Maul. I don’t want to spoil anything but the setup is great.
2
JazzmatazZ4 Apr 14, 2026 -2
Every time there's a new Star Wars it's always apparently the greatest thing ever.
-2
j_b_1983 Apr 14, 2026 +6
you've never heard that from me. Most of the Disney Star Wars shows stink. I'm not even a big fan of the Clone Wars. (bring on the hate)
6
HomicidalTeddybear Apr 17, 2026
Honestly I tried so very hard to like it. Like, I gave it my all. But I think it's finally convinced me I just flat out don't like animation. No shade to people who do, more power to you. Wish I did. It left me flat from episode one, entirely unconnected to ANY of it, despite wanting to be, and just meh. I appreciate the art, I've got no emotional attachment to the format at all. Zero, nothing, nada. Shame really.
0
AgentQV 6 days ago +1
That is a bold statement. No shade whatsoever, but is there any animated thing you do like? Like a pixar movie, disney renaissance or whatnot? I am genuinely curious. I like the show fine but there’s plenty of better animated stuff out there.
1
LaaaFerrari Apr 17, 2026
It’s very good, ignore any of the main SW sublistnooks, including the more “casual” discussion like r/saltierthancrait, they just regurgitate the same bullshit for anything modern Star Wars claiming the series is bad, but it isn’t by any means if you can think for yourself.

Alastor3 6 days ago -1
Beside the like first 3 seasons of clone wars, every other animated shows of star wars have been peak star wars in the last decade (beside Andor)
