Shorts become disabled if watch history is off. I disabled my watch history because I did not want YubTube recommending me any content. The only tab active on my app is Subscriptions; this way I only see content I subscribe to. Shorts are on my Subscriptions tab but only Shorts from channels I subscribe to.
Edit: I mean the tab labeled Shorts in the app will not show content. If you search for something or subscribe to a channel, you will see Shorts.

History search borders on unusable. I would say 95% or so of videos do actually stay in my history - though not all of them! I know it's not just deleted videos, too, because sometimes I find them by using my browser history and those videos are definitely real.
Bigger problem for me is the history search seems like it's trying to be ~Smart~, so it only finds videos like 3 out of 4 times. I can type in the exact video title in quotes and it still won't pop up. Often this is the worst for really old history, multiple years back, but it's not much better for new videos either.
Google has destroyed their products.

Also keep hitting the not interested button whenever shorts pop up. I only have them suggested on the mobile app when out and about as well as in certain related videos that on browser that almost never pop up anyways. Shorts dont do it for me when I want to enjoy the content and learn something. I think Ive enjoyed one artist's short videos cause they're a gas (and they usually wind up comped into one video anyways).

For a lot of people, YouTube is the only app with short form video that they can’t just delete. I got rid of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, but I still get stuck scrolling endlessly on shorts. It’s annoying because I don’t really love doing it, but it does suck you in. But I actually use YouTube otherwise so I’m kinda stuck.
And I’m a fully grown adult. Albeit with ADHD, but still. I probably have your average amount of self-control for an adult when it comes to being able to shut off addictive content. I can only imagine how much worse it would be for kids and teens.

[It's real gross](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-granted-patent-for-ai-llm-bot-dead-paused-accounts-2026-2)
>The company was granted a patent in late December that outlines how a large language model can "simulate" a person's social media activity, such as responding to content posted by real people.
>"The language model may be used for simulating the user when the user is absent from the social networking system, for example, when the user takes a long break or if the user is deceased," the patent says.
>To fill that void, Meta would essentially create a digital clone of your social media presence, training a model on "user-specific" data — including historical platform activity, such as comments, likes, or content — to understand how you would (or rather, did) behave.
>That clone can then respond to other people's content by liking and commenting, or responding to DMs. For influencers or creators who make their livelihoods on Meta's platforms and need to take a break from social media, such a tool could be useful.
f*** all of this. Even if your just taking a digital break.....like hiking for a week. you'd still have some weird ass digital clone posting and responding as "you"
>"We have no plans to move forward with this example," a spokesperson for Meta told Business Insider.

Point being, they have no clue how actual, normal, well-adjusted humans operate, think and feel, nor do they have an interest in understanding it, unless it can make them more money. In a verdict delivered on Wednesday to Judge Carolyn Kuhl, the panel of jurors found Meta and Google intentionally built addictive social media platforms that harmed the mental health of a 20-year old woman, known as Kaley.
The jury's finding will likely influence hundreds of similar cases now winding their way through the US courts.
Lawyers for Meta argued that while Kaley had suffered in her life, her use of Instagram - which Meta owns along with Facebook and WhatsApp - did not cause or meaningfully contribute to those struggles.

You know, as someone with adhd, I KNEW to stay away from tiktok
THEN instagram and youtube started doing short form video and I became absolutely addicted
And it’s SOOOO much worse that these companies did it this way, of directly integrating it within their existing platform, because it had DECADES of data to mine from in order to perfectly nail what my interests and hobbies were to precisely show me content that would get me hooked.
They should allow us to turn it off god damn it, i don’t have self-control and it’s not realistic to ask people to get rid of their smartphones either.
There’s no “freedom” when a company knows exactly how to manipulate your impulses, at this point, the only thing that we can do to change the current state of affairs is to switch to a new medium, something in between a smartphone and a dumb phone. We’ve essentially created a tool so powerful that it now completely consumes our lives, and i think we’re starting to realize that we miss having a bit more seperation between our private, public and work life.
It’s like, EVERYTHING is on our phones, and we’re only entrenching ourselves deeper. We need to disengage before it’s too late and forget how to function and socialize and work irl without our phones.

KGM's legal team showed the jury internal documents from Meta in which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives described its efforts to attract and keep kids and teens on its platforms. One document said: "If we wanna win big with teens, we must bring them in as tweens," and another internal memo showed that 11-year-olds were four times as likely to keep coming back to Instagram, compared to competing apps, despite the platform requiring users to be at least 13 years old.

Yes. And what's especially disturbing is that social media addiction is actually worse than smoking. Smoking is bad, for sure, but the consequences don't hit until decades later (although some kids with lung diseases or asthma get harmed early). Social media impacts child mental health immediately and profoundly. Adult mental health, too, but the truly evil corrosion is what these companies are doing to kids. Although it's pretty clear they've fucked up the social contract with their f****** social network.

Back when they banned smoking on planes, I remember it starting with the US-based carriers and then expanded to international flights with origin/detination in the US. Aeroflot got a waiver because they claimed people wouldn't fly unless they could smoke. Any flight over 3 hours allowed them to smoke and they threatened to sue the US and require all US-based carriers hire Russian speakers for their flight crews. They finally backed down in 2001. They completely banned smoking in 2014. China still allowed pilots to smoke in the cockpit until 2017!
My boss smoked heavily and took frequent trips on Lufthansa to Frankfurt. When I would pick him up after his return to the US, he would chain smoke all the way to the office and be in the worst mood. One day I picked him up and he was happy and didn't smoke. I soon discovered why. He made friends with the crew in business class and found out they would all go smoke in the kitchen in the 747.

Big tobacco realized they were actually in "the flavor game" and [used it's leftover flavorings and additives from cigarettes to create popular products when they purchased food companies starting in the 1960's, but mainly 1980-2001](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37682074/). Cigarettes spike dopamine above baseline 150-200% to create addiction. Big Tobacco hyper-engineered ultraprocessed food just like they did with cigarettes to create addiction, but UPFs can spike dopamine *over 300%*. [Next there should be litigation and payouts](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1468-0009.70066) for the consequences of their effects on the health of society.

UPFs, especially with some specific preservatives (look up the 2025 BMJ NutriNet-Santé study), are killing so many people and it’s going to take decades for anyone to even admit it. Also it’s hard af to shop for non-UPF food in the US. Even a lot of canned soup has “natural flavoring”.

There were equally damning documents released about how the sugar industry knew how addictive and harmful sugar is and that they scape goated fat as being the number one culprit in health issues... Funny how history is littered with people like this: get a good idea, make it successful and a societal good/need, then push it well past the point of necessity to where it becomes overwhelmingly harmful and ruins what positive legacy they may have otherwise established for themselves.
Heck, we have a handful of them living in the US right now: Zuck, Musk, Gates, Bezos.

Fritz Haber is the example that caused me to leave research science and devote my career to regulatory in my field.
He, along with Bosch, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with ammonia as a chemist that enabled fertilizer to be made on a massive scale, enabling much of the population increases that occurred in the 1900s. Same technology was used by him to create chlorine gas in WW1 for the Germans and he became known as the father of chemical warfare.
He continued researching further chemical weapons for the Germans. When the the nazis came to power, he resigned. But his work was used to generate Zyklon B, the chemical used in Nazi concentration camps to assist in the killing of millions of Jews.
Several of Haber's own family members died in those camps. Another branch of his family moved to the USA. His grand-daughter devoted herself to researching an antidote for the chlorine gas her grandfather developed, but was told it needed to wait and that she must aid in the development of the atomic bomb. She killed herself.

> I mean this was a single person and the case sets a precedent.
FYI, in legal terminology, it literally does NOT set a precedent.
Lower courts in civil matters don't set binding precedent like higher courts do. The next court to hear a similar case can happily decide the opposite.
But it does give everyone an idea of what is happening. If they have thousands more cases pending, this suggests what might happen in future trials. If they try 10 of these cases and 7 of them are multi-million verdicts, there will be a different outcome than if they try 10 of them and only 1 has a multi-million verdict.

TheCrimsonDaggerMar 25, 2026

This isn’t necessarily a good thing as the argument isn’t really about the addictiveness of social media but rather the failure of the companies to protect kids from it. The response isn’t going to be preventing companies from tuning algorithms to create addictions but rather preventing kids from accessing it. Naturally this will be done through things like verifying government IDs which “coincidentally” also expands the mass surveillance apparatus. In the end kids will still find ways to get around these restrictions and the only thing that changes is the further erosion of privacy.
79
KnightInDulledArmorMar 26, 2026
+34
Yeah this is a pretty predatory case for the big tech companies. They love shit like this because it makes everyone have a stupidly simple knee-jerk reaction that only empowers them (require IDs for everyone, destroy data privacy, increase censorship), while the actual hard work that would be required to help kids (education for social media use, mental health services, comprehensive online privacy reform) gets completely ignored.

First off, most of that money will be going to the team of lawyers she hired for the case, they did a bang up job getting evidence that Meta and YouTube knew their algorithms were bad, and they did a great job convincing a jury that the companies knew, and didn't care.
Second, most of that money is coming from punative damages, no funding trying to make her whole. It's similar to the hot coffee case in the '90s where the lawyers showed that McDonalds knew about the temp, or in this case knew about the mental health damages, and the jury is saying "since you knew this was a problem because of XYZ reason, you are ordered to pay more in damages because you did not take reasonable steps to stop this."
Finally, in most cases that include punative damages, that amount gets reduced a lot during appeal. Again in the hot coffee case it went from about 3 million, down to around 600k, most of which went towards lawyers and medical bills.
The best way you can try to get a settlement like this would be to gather evidence that your use of Facebook, Instagram or YouTube has cause financial harm to yourself either by psychiatric bills, or medical bills. You can always try to make the argument with lost wages, but those generally go nowhere. Then you would need to find a team of lawyers who are willing to take on your case which also won't be easy because although the precident is now set, these things take time and money to build up. It's easier now of course, and the lawsuit after the next will be even easier, but it is still time consuming and expensive regardless if you would have a "slam-dunk" case.

Im sure there is a litany of data to back up this assumption, but my sample size of 1 believes that with the US citizens being broadly pissed at everything and feel like their voice is being heard less and less, cases involving those in power are one of the few outlets for the general public to express that contempt. Obviously, these guilty or liable findings come from evidence that points to that, but on the flip side, the federal government is failing to secure convictions in court against those charged with more "empathetic" crimes.
I basically assume at this point any case involving this administration, large corporations, the ultra-wealthy, etc will be found guilty unless its obvious the evidence shows otherwise. Everyone is furious and they are going to smash that punish button as much as they can.
