>The official start of the next academic year would remain 31 August, he said, but said two weeks of "strengthening" learning would take place leading up to that date so students did not fall behind. This is so stupid in so many different ways besides the obvious ones when you start reading the article

It is a mess and probably the whole stupid idea falls apart. Millions of people in Mexico have to scramble with their schedules when their children are on school vacation, prolonging such a thing one month is going to make a very sizable chunk of those millions very angry. Among the most idiotic things that have come out of the mouth of the current president, who apparently many people in the international community regard as a particularly intelligent individual.

It not that big of a deal and in the last months of school there are already a lot of school breaks in Mexico anyways. The ones that seem to be protesting it most, don't even have chidren and are imagining some vapid boogieman invented by yellow media people because that's what they do as per their contracts, create a storm in a water cup as they say in Mexico. And no, it is not due to the world cup. There is a very strong heatwave this year all across the country and that does not help either. In fact, that alone could turn the regular school year schedule into a health problem for every state. So it is not a mess. Mexican people are used to interruptions of all kinds and getting back into routine when that is the call. They are party people and not WASPs. That does not mean they are irresponsible. It just means that the rhythm of life, work, and the school calendar is quite different from that of a typical US school year. And the Mexican president is a very accomplished scholar, so I don't know why you try to equate your lack of perspective and ignorance with her first hand knowledge and higher ed degrees. She was a mother, and a professor before she became mayor and then President. And she is the child of highly accomplished academics and married to one as well. She is the dream of every parent for their own son. It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands of legal cases are not being attended to because judges everywhere and their staff apparently needed a long Mother's day holiday weekend.

I don’t know where are you getting this “it’s not a big deal” evaluation of this situation but you are way off. There are plenty of families who have to move all kind of connections to have their children taken care of while they are working, either both parents work or it is a single parent household. It should be unnecessary to say this: you can’t let a 6 year old kid unattended, and make arrangements for having their kids in good care while they are earning money is a constant struggle for millions of people; so when vacations are in plenty of parents have to change things around, often doing things that are more inconvenient than when regular classes are ongoing. Denying that such people exist is baffling and insulting. What do you mean “party people”? Why are you using the term WASP here? It doesn’t make sense. This rescheduling, if going as first stated, will impact middle class and low income people, those are the ones I’m referring to in my comment. Generalizing people within whatever classification is simplistic and it doesn’t help in getting a good idea of the consequences of any given policy. Regarding the current Mexican president academic background: education level does not correlate with the ability of any politician to deliver good results. Carlos Salinas de Gortari has a PhD in Economics, and… well, let’s say his term in office is not remembered as glorious. And the President herself gave another example of the obvious fact that being an expert in some field - as corroborated by a PhD- doesn’t provide you with expertise in everything, when she answered a question related with gasoline prices dismissing the issue by saying that gasoline of lower octane can be used for all vehicles requiring higher octane gasoline.

JustRelaxItFits 1 day ago
Well, you probably do not live in Mexico to understand these dynamics. Secondly, there are plenty of experts consulted on the idea to begin with. Carlos Salinas de Gortari was a known criminal well before and after his tenure. So you don't have a comparison to make. Even today, courts in Mexico are closed. Why aren't you protesting that? It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands of legal cases are not being attended to because judges everywhere and their staff apparently needed a long Mother's day holiday weekend.

All my friends with kids are livid. I don't have kids and it doesn't affect me, so I don't really care. But it is a stupid idea. Only 3 cities are hosting matches why does it have to affect the rest of the cities? And even in the ones who are hosting, it could be limited to the days when matches will happen.

She was a mother, and a professor before she became mayor and then President. The most important school is at home. More time at home with the family is extremely important in the educational development of children. If the US did the same, there would be less violence and violence prone students growing anti-social stuck in being out there on their own dealing with strangers all the time and not learning and participating at home with their families. Even today, courts in Mexico are closed. Why aren't you protesting that? It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. South Africa's school holidays were extended over the whole world cup back in 2010 too. They made other breaks shorter and gave you assignment packs for each subject to do during the world cup break

Beginning_One_4393 3 days ago +74
The official reason is to help with city congestion and overcrowding, also classrooms here don't have AC, and we are expected to be hit with record heat waves. This being said, some say there is an ulterior motive. The unofficial version is that they are trying to keep a teacher's union from protesting during the World Cup. According to the union's guidelines, they are forbidden from protesting during school breaks, so if the school year ends early, they will not get the opportunity to cause chaos.
74
Elektron_Anbar 3 days ago +12
Out of curiosity from someone completely out of the loop: Why would the teachers protest during the World Cup? Is it just to use the media coverage of the event to put a spotlight on their problems, or do they have something against Mexico hosting the World Cup specifically?
12
Icy_Basket8229 3 days ago +19
This goverment promised teachers and other technically left winged groups that they would help them out of the tyranical mess left by the conservatives. Other things like thousands of dead and missing people have not chnaged. The "left winged" party betrayed them, so messing up the world cup is something they can do to protest internationally. At least this is what is supposed to be happening.
19
Elektron_Anbar 3 days ago +5
I see thanks for the reply!
5
Beginning_One_4393 3 days ago +3
Exactly. They are looking for leverage. They know that the government would be more than willing to negotiate if they were to disrupt by implementing blockades and picketing outside strategic areas. Basically, they threaten to inconvenience tourists as much as they possibly can. The CNTE (the aforementioned teachers' union) is looking for pension reform since pensions are meager and barely enough to get by.
3
EagleCeres 2 days ago +1
CNTE is not even the official Teacher's Union, that would be SNTE. But CNTE are the first to do strikes and other disruptive activities affecting all union and non-union teachers nationwide.
1
Beginning_One_4393 2 days ago +3
Yup. Thanks for the added context. They are the dissident faction within the SNTE. CNTE is mostly seen in the southern states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and Michoacan.

On a regular year, City Congestion is greatly reduced when kids are home. It makes sense to do it during the world cup, I would go as far as to say it is necesary despite the difficulties it can bring to families. It is not that deep or evil
1
No_Dragonfruit_1833 2 days ago +1
Teachers rarely protest this close the shool cycle's end , because thats just more work for themselves The teacher union is very organized on their strikes so this doesnt really affect them, is just a choice to decrease public transit and a bunch of conspiration theories riding the hype
1
Luccfi 3 days ago +199
It has nothing to do with the sport but rather about reducing the number of public transit services users to avoid its collapse during the World Cup as the cities will be flooded with tourists.

If you are talking about the Queretaro game it was confirmed by the journalist that started the story (David Medrano) that he made it up, there was a brawl inside the stadium but there wasn't a single death, all that info of people dying came from him and he had to do a public apology later because he made it up to "be the first to report it". [https://www.mediotiempo.com/futbol/liga-mx/david-medrano-se-disculpa-por-cifra-extraoficial-de-17-muertos-en-queretaro](https://www.mediotiempo.com/futbol/liga-mx/david-medrano-se-disculpa-por-cifra-extraoficial-de-17-muertos-en-queretaro)

Maybe they’re talking about the [Querétaro–Atlas riot?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quer%C3%A9taro%E2%80%93Atlas_riot?wprov=sfti1) I tried google murder football game Mexico but there’s a cartel shooting from last year that came up first. Or maybe they’re talking about the [Murder of Otávio Jordão da Silva?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Ot%C3%A1vio_Jord%C3%A3o_da_Silva?wprov=sfti1#) He was a ref that stabbed a player during an amateur game and then was, among other gruesome things, lynched by football spectators. But that game took place in Brazil, not Mexico.

For those that don’t know, basically our idiots in command don’t want tourists getting bothered by locals during the World Cup, and kids do generate a boat load of traffic… oh and some States want classes to be over sooner because of the heatwave, I can understand those cases. However they could still pull a classes from home scenario but noooo, that would be too difficult to do.
147
Luccfi 3 days ago +47
Northern Mexico and Yucatan ending it up a month earlier makes sense because temps can get up to 40-50ºC in many cities during a heatwave and in the case of Yucatan with very high humidity which basically makes it hell to be outside.

is Morena, they are dumb as f*** and just want an excuse because they know the Public Transport System is going to collapse in the summer (they also are probably trying to avoid the CNTE and other teacher's unions from starting shit as they are not allowed to do protests if the School year is over). Going with the "doing it for the kids" was their dumb populist way of trying to sell the idea and of course it didn't work, the last thing parents want is an extra month with their kids at home.

Basic mathematics? Why would I need school for something I learned how to do in 30 minutes when I was 5?  And History? Notice how bad the average person is at it, just like Biology and Geography, while those with passion for it know stuff they don't teach in school. I learned English from cartoons and video games, same as most of my classmates, while those that didn't know it before school learned enough to pass the tests but not enough to hold a proper conversation. School programs cram 10 different subjects in a year with 20+ lessons each, the majority of kids just memorize the material and forget it by next year outside of the most basic of common knowledge. I've had classmates having to redo years or just drop out of school altogether because they struggled with the material, instead of discarding them from the system and they ending with some minumum wage job how about changing the system to help find what they do in life? Youth unemployment is going up but at least they know what ribonucleic acid is!

There was no communication between the president and secretaries regarding this. The decision was made in a matter of 12 hours. The secretary made it seem official while the president said it was being considered. The way and the timing of this announcement sounds pretty much like a smoke wall. It's been pretty effective so far.

It is honestly pretty wild that the government is just cutting a whole month of school just to make room for a soccer tournament. I get that the World Cup is a massive deal, especially with Mexico hosting, but prioritizing that over kids' education feels so backward. Parents are already struggling enough as it is, and now they have to figure out childcare for an extra month while the country basically turns into a giant tourist zone. It just seems like a massive slap in the face to families who actually live there.

Eh, Americans and Europeans get that amount of vacation, the problem here in Mexico is that whether you increase or decrease the quantity and length of garbage it's still garbage. From the side of the parents having to arrange for childcare definetely sucks. I only gave my insight as a student back then and what teachers go through. School shouldnt be a free daycare service either. If no one is there to learn is teachers and students wasted time

everybody says school shouldn't be daycare, but, why not? what do these people think the difference is between daycare and school? School is daycare, obviously, but that doesn't mean we don't want children to work and be taught. It's the safest place where children can socialize and work and play, nothing wrong with that.

It’s okay if they downvote as a Mexican I don’t feel represented by that piece of sh… she’s not a good president, everything is becoming more and more expensive in the country. People can’t even pay for a kilo of tortillas, tomatoes, onions, Chiles, meat, chicken you name it. She only cares about the World Cup and every time she’s confronted at the mañaneras by reporters about bad stuff going on in the country she always says they’re wrong and stuff like that. They don’t know about those things because they’re not in the country simple as that.

The world cup in USA? I hope it's the greatest shitshow of all times, as it's fitting for current USA.

Do you think parents are just going to take the month off work to take their kids to soccer games? 😂 Given the articles around latest ticket prices being upwards of $3,000... That doesn't seem likely on so many levels. So nah, I don't think it'll be appreciated
