>The official start of the next academic year would remain 31 August, he said, but said two weeks of "strengthening" learning would take place leading up to that date so students did not fall behind. This is so stupid in so many different ways besides the obvious ones when you start reading the article

It is a mess and probably the whole stupid idea falls apart. Millions of people in Mexico have to scramble with their schedules when their children are on school vacation, prolonging such a thing one month is going to make a very sizable chunk of those millions very angry. Among the most idiotic things that have come out of the mouth of the current president, who apparently many people in the international community regard as a particularly intelligent individual.

It not that big of a deal and in the last months of school there are already a lot of school breaks in Mexico anyways. The ones that seem to be protesting it most, don't even have chidren and are imagining some vapid boogieman invented by yellow media people because that's what they do as per their contracts, create a storm in a water cup as they say in Mexico. And no, it is not due to the world cup. There is a very strong heatwave this year all across the country and that does not help either. In fact, that alone could turn the regular school year schedule into a health problem for every state. So it is not a mess. Mexican people are used to interruptions of all kinds and getting back into routine when that is the call. They are party people and not WASPs. That does not mean they are irresponsible. It just means that the rhythm of life, work, and the school calendar is quite different from that of a typical US school year. And the Mexican president is a very accomplished scholar, so I don't know why you try to equate your lack of perspective and ignorance with her first hand knowledge and higher ed degrees. She was a mother, and a professor before she became mayor and then President. And she is the child of highly accomplished academics and married to one as well. She is the dream of every parent for their own son. It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands of legal cases are not being attended to because judges everywhere and their staff apparently needed a long Mother's day holiday weekend.

I don’t know where are you getting this “it’s not a big deal” evaluation of this situation but you are way off. There are plenty of families who have to move all kind of connections to have their children taken care of while they are working, either both parents work or it is a single parent household. It should be unnecessary to say this: you can’t let a 6 year old kid unattended, and make arrangements for having their kids in good care while they are earning money is a constant struggle for millions of people; so when vacations are in plenty of parents have to change things around, often doing things that are more inconvenient than when regular classes are ongoing. Denying that such people exist is baffling and insulting. What do you mean “party people”? Why are you using the term WASP here? It doesn’t make sense. This rescheduling, if going as first stated, will impact middle class and low income people, those are the ones I’m referring to in my comment. Generalizing people within whatever classification is simplistic and it doesn’t help in getting a good idea of the consequences of any given policy. Regarding the current Mexican president academic background: education level does not correlate with the ability of any politician to deliver good results. Carlos Salinas de Gortari has a PhD in Economics, and… well, let’s say his term in office is not remembered as glorious. And the President herself gave another example of the obvious fact that being an expert in some field - as corroborated by a PhD- doesn’t provide you with expertise in everything, when she answered a question related with gasoline prices dismissing the issue by saying that gasoline of lower octane can be used for all vehicles requiring higher octane gasoline.
13
JustRelaxItFits May 11, 2026
Well, you probably do not live in Mexico to understand these dynamics. Secondly, there are plenty of experts consulted on the idea to begin with. Carlos Salinas de Gortari was a known criminal well before and after his tenure. So you don't have a comparison to make. Even today, courts in Mexico are closed. Why aren't you protesting that? It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands of legal cases are not being attended to because judges everywhere and their staff apparently needed a long Mother's day holiday weekend.

All my friends with kids are livid. I don't have kids and it doesn't affect me, so I don't really care. But it is a stupid idea. Only 3 cities are hosting matches why does it have to affect the rest of the cities? And even in the ones who are hosting, it could be limited to the days when matches will happen.
10
JustRelaxItFits May 11, 2026 -2
They should relax. It will be for the better. Even today, courts in Mexico are closed. Why aren't you and they not protesting that? She was a mother, and a professor before she became mayor and then President. The most important school is at home. More time at home with the family is extremely important in the educational development of children. If the US did the same, there would be less violence and violence prone students growing anti-social stuck in being out there on their own dealing with strangers all the time and not learning and participating at home with their families. Even today, courts in Mexico are closed. Why aren't you protesting that? It's actual weekday, a Monday, a business day everywhere in the world and NOT an official holiday of any kind in Mexico. Many do not.

A month?! Holy moly. They must reeeeally like their football.  Imagine all the double income parents trying to find someone to baby sit their kids while they are at work for a whole  month.

ebenseregterbalsak May 9, 2026 +163
South Africa's school holidays were extended over the whole world cup back in 2010 too. They made other breaks shorter and gave you assignment packs for each subject to do during the world cup break

Beginning_One_4393 May 10, 2026 +74
The official reason is to help with city congestion and overcrowding, also classrooms here don't have AC, and we are expected to be hit with record heat waves. This being said, some say there is an ulterior motive. The unofficial version is that they are trying to keep a teacher's union from protesting during the World Cup. According to the union's guidelines, they are forbidden from protesting during school breaks, so if the school year ends early, they will not get the opportunity to cause chaos.
74
Elektron_Anbar May 10, 2026 +12
Out of curiosity from someone completely out of the loop: Why would the teachers protest during the World Cup? Is it just to use the media coverage of the event to put a spotlight on their problems, or do they have something against Mexico hosting the World Cup specifically?
12
Icy_Basket8229 May 10, 2026 +19
This goverment promised teachers and other technically left winged groups that they would help them out of the tyranical mess left by the conservatives. Other things like thousands of dead and missing people have not chnaged. The "left winged" party betrayed them, so messing up the world cup is something they can do to protest internationally. At least this is what is supposed to be happening.
19
Elektron_Anbar May 10, 2026 +5
I see thanks for the reply!
5
Beginning_One_4393 May 10, 2026 +3
Exactly. They are looking for leverage. They know that the government would be more than willing to negotiate if they were to disrupt by implementing blockades and picketing outside strategic areas. Basically, they threaten to inconvenience tourists as much as they possibly can. The CNTE (the aforementioned teachers' union) is looking for pension reform since pensions are meager and barely enough to get by.
3
EagleCeres May 10, 2026 +1
CNTE is not even the official Teacher's Union, that would be SNTE. But CNTE are the first to do strikes and other disruptive activities affecting all union and non-union teachers nationwide.
1
Beginning_One_4393 May 10, 2026 +3
Yup. Thanks for the added context. They are the dissident faction within the SNTE. CNTE is mostly seen in the southern states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and Michoacan.
3
desrtz May 11, 2026 +1
On a regular year, City Congestion is greatly reduced when kids are home. It makes sense to do it during the world cup, I would go as far as to say it is necesary despite the difficulties it can bring to families. It is not that deep or evil
1
No_Dragonfruit_1833 May 11, 2026 +1
Teachers rarely protest this close the shool cycle's end , because thats just more work for themselves The teacher union is very organized on their strikes so this doesnt really affect them, is just a choice to decrease public transit and a bunch of conspiration theories riding the hype
1
Luccfi May 9, 2026 +199
It has nothing to do with the sport but rather about reducing the number of public transit services users to avoid its collapse during the World Cup as the cities will be flooded with tourists.
199
Poku115 May 10, 2026 +109
Almost like our cities aren't equipped for this and its the civilians that are gonna take the brunt of this while the government keeps filling their pockets
109
N0N4GRPBF8ZME1NB5KWL May 10, 2026 +13
“They must really like their football” while everyone in the country is complaining about this stupid decision.
13
ryuzaki49 May 10, 2026 +5
> They must reeeeally like their football We do, but basically the government is doing everything it can to keep us inside our houses so tourists can enjoy the cities
5
MarvinTraveler May 10, 2026 +3
And that’s why this stupid proposal is probably going to die next week. Plenty of people in Mexico are pissed off just trying to find a workaround.

I mean Mexico is where the Murder Game happened. They might be psychopaths for it.
-39
Luccfi May 9, 2026 +32
If you are talking about the Queretaro game it was confirmed by the journalist that started the story (David Medrano) that he made it up, there was a brawl inside the stadium but there wasn't a single death, all that info of people dying came from him and he had to do a public apology later because he made it up to "be the first to report it". [https://www.mediotiempo.com/futbol/liga-mx/david-medrano-se-disculpa-por-cifra-extraoficial-de-17-muertos-en-queretaro](https://www.mediotiempo.com/futbol/liga-mx/david-medrano-se-disculpa-por-cifra-extraoficial-de-17-muertos-en-queretaro)

Murder game? Did I miss some news
9
cmackchase May 9, 2026 -27
Yes, and the TLDR is the losing team fans decided murder was an acceptable response to the winning teams fans. And before you ask, odds are the only place to find video of this at this point is on some real evil ass websites.

WorkAccount6 May 9, 2026 +26
Nobody knows what you are talking about

The_Pelican1245 May 9, 2026 +14
Maybe they’re talking about the [Querétaro–Atlas riot?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quer%C3%A9taro%E2%80%93Atlas_riot?wprov=sfti1) I tried google murder football game Mexico but there’s a cartel shooting from last year that came up first. Or maybe they’re talking about the [Murder of Otávio Jordão da Silva?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Ot%C3%A1vio_Jord%C3%A3o_da_Silva?wprov=sfti1#) He was a ref that stabbed a player during an amateur game and then was, among other gruesome things, lynched by football spectators. But that game took place in Brazil, not Mexico.

For those that don’t know, basically our idiots in command don’t want tourists getting bothered by locals during the World Cup, and kids do generate a boat load of traffic… oh and some States want classes to be over sooner because of the heatwave, I can understand those cases. However they could still pull a classes from home scenario but noooo, that would be too difficult to do.
147
Luccfi May 9, 2026 +47
Northern Mexico and Yucatan ending it up a month earlier makes sense because temps can get up to 40-50ºC in many cities during a heatwave and in the case of Yucatan with very high humidity which basically makes it hell to be outside.
47
Honest_Roof7373 May 9, 2026 +7
But these conditions aren't that different from every year. Why do it?
7
Luccfi May 9, 2026 +18
is Morena, they are dumb as f*** and just want an excuse because they know the Public Transport System is going to collapse in the summer (they also are probably trying to avoid the CNTE and other teacher's unions from starting shit as they are not allowed to do protests if the School year is over). Going with the "doing it for the kids" was their dumb populist way of trying to sell the idea and of course it didn't work, the last thing parents want is an extra month with their kids at home.

Wtf? How can you degrade the education of a generation just for some football? That's practically criminal.
601
Honest_Roof7373 May 9, 2026 +157
Even worse, there's only three cities where games are going to be held. And they did this to the whole country. Complete idiots. Fortunately, the backlash was so big that they are reconsidering.

Kids gonna be worse at reading just to watch Mexico get knocked out on pens after winning 90% of the game.

Idk, in the US the lady month of school is usually not that important. Especially the last couple weeks. I think the bigger issue for parents is child care.
1
LogRealistic4111 May 11, 2026 +1
If a month without classes were enough to ruin a generation's education, then they were ruined from the start lol
1

sometimes the rest of the population is taken hostage by fanboys...
1
cinyar May 11, 2026 +2
During the last world cup 70% of Mexicans planned to watch their team play. It's not exactly some minority sport.
2
L_Cranston_Shadow May 10, 2026 +2
Given how much of the country is taken hostage by the cartels (figuratively, if not literally) at any given change, soccer hooligans running things might be an interesting change of pace.

America does, it has become part of the education system for small towns to be so focused on youth sports at the expense of education people think there is nothing wrong with it.
-31
Funicularly May 9, 2026 +26
How can I make this about America?! Also, when has America ended the school year a month early for a sporting event?
26
JohnTheUnjust May 9, 2026 -21
U know yo're on listnook where a majority of users are from america? Nah, couldn't be. They end a school year later and with summer school to make up for their youth sports.
-21
cubing_frog May 9, 2026 -61
Oh relax 🙄. The kids and families of those who are academically focused and want the education will still put in the effort to study despite the extra time off.
-61
StormWhich5629 May 9, 2026 +35
Well shit why have school at all? The kids and families of those who are academically focused and want the education will still put in the effort to study, right?
35
HollowDanO May 9, 2026 +14
Right? Like parents have to go to work to afford food and housing and expenses for children. Just stay home and focus on academics with your kids. Who knew it was that easy?

Yeah I can tell. "Socializing and how to write" instead of "how to socialize and write" or "socializing and writing" C minus
12
StormWhich5629 May 9, 2026 +25
Basic mathematics? History? Sorry you went to dogshit schools IG
25
Marace55 May 9, 2026 -17
Basic mathematics? Why would I need school for something I learned how to do in 30 minutes when I was 5?  And History? Notice how bad the average person is at it, just like Biology and Geography, while those with passion for it know stuff they don't teach in school. I learned English from cartoons and video games, same as most of my classmates, while those that didn't know it before school learned enough to pass the tests but not enough to hold a proper conversation. School programs cram 10 different subjects in a year with 20+ lessons each, the majority of kids just memorize the material and forget it by next year outside of the most basic of common knowledge. I've had classmates having to redo years or just drop out of school altogether because they struggled with the material, instead of discarding them from the system and they ending with some minumum wage job how about changing the system to help find what they do in life? Youth unemployment is going up but at least they know what ribonucleic acid is!

Like every other country that cares about the WC. Actually watching games at school are one of the best memories from when I was young lol.

I don't even like football and I remember watching a final at school once. It was a good time!
6
henne-n May 10, 2026 +1
Dito. I don't remember which games we watched but it was fun.
1
pumpkinspruce May 10, 2026 +5
I remember a few times our teachers turning on the TV to let us watch NCAA games in March, particularly my seventh-grade English teacher who was a huge Indiana basketball fan.
5
rainbocado May 10, 2026 +6
It has nothing to do with watching the games. It’s about not crowding public transit. Same reason they are also asking people to work from home.
6
FaceShrine May 10, 2026 +11
There was no communication between the president and secretaries regarding this. The decision was made in a matter of 12 hours. The secretary made it seem official while the president said it was being considered. The way and the timing of this announcement sounds pretty much like a smoke wall. It's been pretty effective so far.
11
Samski877 May 9, 2026 +59
It is honestly pretty wild that the government is just cutting a whole month of school just to make room for a soccer tournament. I get that the World Cup is a massive deal, especially with Mexico hosting, but prioritizing that over kids' education feels so backward. Parents are already struggling enough as it is, and now they have to figure out childcare for an extra month while the country basically turns into a giant tourist zone. It just seems like a massive slap in the face to families who actually live there.
59
Ill-Prior-8429 May 11, 2026 +1
Eh, Americans and Europeans get that amount of vacation, the problem here in Mexico is that whether you increase or decrease the quantity and length of garbage it's still garbage. I had more vacation time that kids nowadays and it was my generation when they started taking time away, and my education was actually better.

gsustudentpsy May 9, 2026 +29

19
Redditor_exe May 9, 2026 +22
A week I could *maybe* understand, but a month is INSANE. Mexico aren’t even nearly as good as they used to be, these days they’re on par with the USA at best
22
jorgespinosa May 10, 2026 +4
Furthermore only 3 cities are going to have matches for the world cup, there's no reason the whole country has to be affected by this
4
Andromeda39 May 10, 2026 +3
When have they ever been good? At least in South America we’ve always made fun of how bad they are and how easy it is for them to go to the World Cup every four years because they compete with even worse teams.
3
RaceDBannon May 10, 2026 +9
Advocating for the suspension of children’s education for a sporting event is peak 2026.
9
Icy-Computer-Poop May 10, 2026 +5
That is deeply fucked, Mexico.
5
DanimalPlays May 10, 2026 +2
Thats a lot of bullshit. It's also not like this was sprung on them out of nowhere, they could have started the year early. Really they should just go about business a usual. What does school have to do with the world cup? Put the games on in classrooms and use it as an opportunity to teach about things related to soccer if you want people to watch it.
2
MyAccountWasBanned7 May 10, 2026 +2
Why the f*** would a proposal to deny children an education for A MONTH so they can watch football even see the light of day in the first place? Does the whole world just prioritize stupidity now?
2
dirtymoney May 10, 2026 +5
if you come to Kansas City to watch the world cup.... just know that a LOT of restaurants here have suddenly made tipping mandatory with gratuity fees in anticipation of foreigners not tipping. IMO it is just a dirty thing to do to tourists. So ask ahead if time before going to a restaurant.
5
rakor96ns May 10, 2026 +6
As a mexican, going to school during world cup is so useless. Neither teachers or students want to be there and we would have the whole opening ceremony and matches on tv with a sort of food party. Source: me, 2010 south africa vs mexico opening match
6
jorgespinosa May 10, 2026 +6
Yeah it was nice but let's be honest we only watched the Mexico matches and the final, it's not like students were so eager to watch Slovenia play against Algeria
6
Poku115 May 10, 2026 +7
Not useless for double income houses my guy.
7
rakor96ns May 10, 2026 +4
From the side of the parents having to arrange for childcare definetely sucks. I only gave my insight as a student back then and what teachers go through. School shouldnt be a free daycare service either. If no one is there to learn is teachers and students wasted time

"free daycare" ah yes cause taxes and tuition arent a thing. You sure you are an adult?

everybody says school shouldn't be daycare, but, why not? what do these people think the difference is between daycare and school? School is daycare, obviously, but that doesn't mean we don't want children to work and be taught. It's the safest place where children can socialize and work and play, nothing wrong with that.

It is not a big deal and a very welcome change. There is a major heat wave all over the country and the last months of the school year are already fraught with breaks and holidays. Parents need their kids at home too for longer time so that they can stay close to them. Not everything revolves aound becoming drones for a corporate world that is vanishing day by day.

This is actually hilarious 😂😂 Kids will be celebrating this, but the adults are gonna be fuming, lol. Was this plan proposed a long time ago, or was it a last minute change to the school calendar???

Historically, sports events and specially soccer have been a tool for Mexico's idiotization. Over several decades the media has pushed the sport so much that it has basically become a religion for many people. Families have been divided because of their favorite teams.

Soccer. Other sports (especially outdoors) are actually worth it.

It’s okay if they downvote as a Mexican I don’t feel represented by that piece of sh… she’s not a good president, everything is becoming more and more expensive in the country. People can’t even pay for a kilo of tortillas, tomatoes, onions, Chiles, meat, chicken you name it. She only cares about the World Cup and every time she’s confronted at the mañaneras by reporters about bad stuff going on in the country she always says they’re wrong and stuff like that. They don’t know about those things because they’re not in the country simple as that.

The world cup in USA? I hope it's the greatest shitshow of all times, as it's fitting for current USA.

Do you think parents are just going to take the month off work to take their kids to soccer games? 😂 Given the articles around latest ticket prices being upwards of $3,000... That doesn't seem likely on so many levels. So nah, I don't think it'll be appreciated
