Congrats to Mexico for taking steps towards universal healthcare for their citizens!

Trump notwithstanding, the US has sent military and drug enforcement aid to Mexico for decades. How much does this funding allow them to afford this? It’s a legitimate question and one that applies to any nation receiving aid of any kind.

You realize only Americans believe this non-sense right? It's not a legitimate question. It's a loaded question to push a narrative that the US government wish to push upon their citizens. Drop it. Your allies are sick of it. Sincerely a Canadian.

skrilledcheese Apr 13, 2026 +14
Fellow American here. We give them aid to enforce our failed drug policies, that's not really a gift. Also, we pay more for the shitty healthcare system that we have. Meaning we would save money by implementing a single payer system here. Don't get mad at foreigners, don't get mad at foreign aid. Get mad at billionaires and our corrupt right wing politics.

Maybe the question you should be asking is why doesn't the US provide universal healthcare for its own citizens despite being able to afford trillions on "defense"?

sagesbeta Apr 13, 2026 +1
I do no man it's the us that funda, trains and sells weapons to the US. Mo's of the operations to "help" we actually spy on the country it's well documented that they killed I for and before, it's even in the Epstein if you look for it.

It won't be long before Mexico has a higher average standard of living than the US.

US citizens will be sneaking over the border for it.

delicioustreeblood Apr 12, 2026 +79
They already do. Some dental care is so much cheaper there, even with travel costs.

morbie5 Apr 12, 2026 +6
Mexico won't be foolish enough to give universal coverage to illegal immigrants

PersonoFly Apr 12, 2026 +7
Or maybe they will be kinder.

sagesbeta Apr 13, 2026 +2
It's in the constitution, it would be inhumane not to do it.

Their private health care system is stellar - I saw three specialists & had lab work / imaging done at a private hospital in CDMX. The hospital was nicer than the one in my city in the U.S. Appointments were easy to get (no wait), cost the same or less than my co-pays, I was respected and paid attention to in a way that doesn’t happen here & found out more in 2 weeks there than I had in a year putzing around with my health insurance. The whole trip was less than my deductible, and I got stellar care.

Another_Slut_Dragon Apr 12, 2026 +2
We get Americans up here paying the tourist rate for medical work. They say the full tourist rate in Canada is usually cheaper than their co-pay.
2
texachusetts Apr 12, 2026 +7
Soon Americans will have to pay tariffs, tax’s and possibly compensation to American health care companies for treatments received in Mexico or other parts of the world.

I've legit considered just retiring there along with a handful of peolle I know. Not like, come down and gentrify the neighborhood eith America, but the lifestyle is just becoming more appealing. Stuff like this only makes it moreso.

Hi. America here.  We wish we had universal Healthcare but we supposedly need bombs more.

tegat Apr 12, 2026 +44
Your pharma/health insurance needs profits more. Not that US military budget isn't bloated, it is, but it have bigger problems. US spends 18% of GDP on healthcare and 3.4% on military. 2% is supposed to be the minimum for military, so reallocating would bring additional 1.4%. Significant, but not groundbreaking. Definitely not enough for universal healthcare. Fixing the horribly inefficient system will bring far more. France spends 12% on healthcare and 2.1% on military for comparison.

Horat1us_UA Apr 12, 2026 +5
Someone needs to pitch senators they could increase millitary budget if they introduce universal healthcare
5
Hat_Maverick Apr 12, 2026 +2
Someone should pitchfork everyone with more than $100 million
2
Awkward_Silence- Apr 12, 2026 +8
Goes to show how effective brainwashing/propaganda is. The US would actually save a ton of money by moving to a Universal Healthcare System. The government is already spending a higher % GDP on the current Medicare system than most other countries entire universal systems cost. Just means gutting the health insurance, pharma and other adjacent industries. So a hit to big political donors wallets, and a shift in many insurance jobs which would likely disenfranchise voters of whoever initiates it

RedditReader4031 Apr 12, 2026 -4
It comes down to WHO withdraw save money. Cumulatively, as a nation? Yes, that the accepted conclusion. But why would my employer, who doesn’t offer any benefits, and therefore, doesn’t carry the cost of health insurance, willing pay more in taxes to provide it universally? That’s just bad business, no matter how you look at it.
-4
Hannibal_Spectre Apr 12, 2026 +5
Why does your employer pay taxes at all? Surely that’s bad business, no mater how you look at it. Hmmm… they are legally required to. I wonder if there is a simple way to get them to pay for health care? I think a better question is why you feel the need to speak up for an employer that provides you with no benefits. FDR had some good things to say about companies paying less than the wages of decent living.
5
RedditReader4031 Apr 12, 2026 -2
The amount of taxes than a business can pay is not infinite. I have great respect for capitalism and those who practice it well. As far as benefits being provided, I am low maintenance and don’t want anything from my employer or my neighbor, via taxes taken from either. FDR also believed Americans have a freedom from want. Who is supposed to pay for that?
-2
Hannibal_Spectre Apr 12, 2026 +6
I’m certain if given the example of an employee in your benefitless company that developed cancer you would probably suggest Gofundme or the church. You americans are hilarious. Almost every other country has this but you. Endless money for bombing brown people but no money for your people. You actively screech at the idea of paying LESS if it means everyone gets covered. Propaganda is a helluva thing.
6
RedditReader4031 Apr 12, 2026 -1
Presumably, an employee with cancer wouldn’t be able to work and so would be out of the company. This isn’t a high tech or big money financial services company, it’s a staffing agency that places minimum wage guards and warehouse workers. State mandated wages are about double what the work is actually worth. Providing benefits or not providing benefits wouldn’t matter. As far as any assistance they might get, that absolutely should be in the form of voluntary charity especially since cancer isn’t contagious.

LLJKCicero Apr 12, 2026 +1
Nah, we already spend a shitton of our GDP on healthcare, amount of funding really isn't the problem. The problem is exactly *how* it's funded.

S0LO_Bot Apr 13, 2026
We could afford more bombs right now if we had well-implemented universal healthcare.

More bombs sir, bigger bombs.

As usual Mexico beating the US on social issues. legalized gay marriage, decriminalized possession of pot now healthcare. The US is 10 years behind Mexico.

Mexico is marching her citizens towards a better future. America is taking her citizens backwards into uncontrolled uncivilized territory.

America is letting the techbros high on their own farts and weirdo designer drugs march them towards reinstating the feudal system

MexicanEssay Apr 12, 2026 +2
Nah it's all just corrupt inner circles making backroom deals and lining each other's pockets. In both countries. The only difference is the US is doing it blatantly right now, while Mexico is in a more traditional "pretend to help the people" phase.

You clearly have not visited Mexico

clone69 Apr 12, 2026 +6
This. All the foreign media sees is what Sheinbaum wants them to believe. This will be just like when Trump claims to have ended the war he started: we already had a universal healthcare system, but AMLO cancelled it because it was "full of corruption" (which, in actual Spanish, means it didn't have his brand and couldn't take credit for it) so now they replace it with what looks like the same but will actually be worse, and with Morena's colors, and you can be sure with a huge contract for someone of his inner circle.

Mexican living in Mexico… this is a Garbanzo beans project, we have had social security for a long long time, those that work on the formal sector can include relatives from the first direct bloodline to this service. Here is the tricky part, out of the 130M citizens, only around 23.5M pay the IMSS tolls. You can do the math. This and the previous government also have reduced spending over 7 years on public healthcare. The system was never really good but it could save you in a very dire situation, but any Mexican will tell you that they rather go to a private doctor than going to the current death trap public hospitals have become. Now imagine our public healthcare being free for everyone… when there aren’t medicines, proper infrastructure, doctors, rooms for patients, medical equipment, etc for those that do pay the taxes… it’s just insanity. Mind you the current government has done a terrible job managing all their “Star” projects, not even kidding all of them have malfunctioned within less than 2 years of being implemented. If you as an outsider think this is great, think again, Mexico is in terrible shape right now and implementing programs that will inevitably backfire won’t help out anyone.

clone69 Apr 12, 2026 +12
That's what happens when the foreign media doesn't know the inner workings. They hear "universal healthcare" and don't stop to think how it will be sustained. And don't get me wrong, I have my IMSS and they provide me with my medication, but for higher specialties? They gave my dad an appointment to have him evaluated for knee surgery in 18 months because they don't have enough staff. They had previously refused him that surgery because "he doesn't walk that much, he doesn't need it", when he doesn't walk much because of the knee issues he has. Bottom line is, as we are now, the current public healthcare can barely be sustained and is always on the verge of collapse. I don't want to find out how they will screw this up like they have done with their other mega projects like the airport, the oil refinery and the train. This time the number of lives involved will be much larger.

All those downvotes are either by Morena bots, or foreigners that funny understand that this is the case. They are just speeding up the collapse of the IMSS.
