Mando is such an incredible actor, particularly that final season of Better Call Saul. I think last year he got fired from some show, and I was worried his career had hit a wall. Great to see him in the new Spider-Man film, and this as well

Yeah, Vaas was only the villain for the first half of the game. There was the whole second half on the southern island with Hoyt as the main villain leading the privateers. That part wasn't nearly as good as the first half with Vaas though.

IIRC Far Cry was where he got his major break. They wanted a quiet, stoic character, but when he auditioned he did the complete opposite and didn't get the part. Then, a few weeks later they called to tell him they loved his audition so much that they wrote a new part just for him. He ended up being so good that the marketing completely ignored the "big bad" in favor of Mando's Vaas, who was the henchman of the big bad, and the forgettable big bad ended up only being in the last like 20% of the game. He's still my most memorable antagonist in gaming.
Anyone who hasn't seen it should checkout his "definition of insanity" monologue from Far Cry 3, it was so good they made it the original promo for the game. From my first time seeing that I knew the dude was going places.
51
ProjectNo4090Mar 24, 2026

They also made him the main character on the cover art. The actual protagonist, Jason, is buried up to the nose in sand beside Vaas and most gamers never even noticed Jason was on the cover art.

Yep, people need to stop thinking all Anime is the same. Comparing those two is like being leery about a new Warner Bros production because the company made both Blade Runner and The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
7
dikaia1622Mar 24, 2026
+12
I respectfully disagree. Bebop can definitely be done, and netflix One Piece was made with the lessons learned. John Cho was a great name attached to get the project made, but as Spike Spiegel??! For One Piece they actually cast actors that greatly resemble the characters they're supposed to be portraying - which is thankfully becoming more common in these adaptations.
12
silvertwo777Mar 24, 2026
+7
John Cho did well as Spike, I don't know wtf are you people talking about. The problem is the script, not the casting
7
aftyMar 25, 2026
+1
He was way too old. I think he would have been a great pick if he was 15 years or so younger. That said, he did as well as could be expected and the scripts were definitely the biggest issue.
1
dikaia1622Mar 24, 2026
He's a fantastic actor and he did a fantastic job. I'm not trying to disparage the man's ability, but 1) he's older than Jet and looks it 2) talent is only one piece (haha) of the puzzle, if you're adapting a visual artform like comics/manga, you need people that are larger-than-life pretty. I actually enjoyed Netflix Bebop, but if they want wider commercial appeal they need to understand what makes these things work in the first place.
Netflix One Piece cast look like they were designed in a s*** laboratory.

Honestly, it depends on the seires.
Sometimes it's the type of alloy they are made of called Gundanium, others it's a acronym like "General Unilateral Neuro-link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver", or just even a "Gun" that is used to "Dam" / hold back threats. Prob several more, I'm honestly only familiar with the Wing and Seed universe since that was what was on TV.
