For his new album, Charlie Puth knew he wanted a yacht-rock song. So he gave Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins a call.

Rare Mrs. Miller reference! Me and my dad used to listen to her and laugh our asses off to the degree where all bad singers were “Mrs. Miller”.

Damn, I barely know who Charlie Puth is, but the fact that Michael McDonald would record together with him almost makes me wanna check him out. Almost.

He's incredibly talented. Just did an interview with Rick Beato on YouTube you should check out. I don't know that I like his music, but I respect how much HE respects music and music history. Really likeable dude.

I love his voice, but not his music so much. He has perfect pich evidently. Wish I could read this article, but it's paywalled.

I think he's a genius musical talent and he makes music I just loathe

How and why is Charlie Puth's "genius" a nearly universal talking point? What exactly makes him a genius? Does anyone actually like his music? Please don't say perfect pitch or whatever. Jimi Hendrix couldn't tune his guitar and Beethoven couldn't even f****** hear. Perfect pitch is not a sign of musical genius.

personally as a casual listener of charlie puth, i'd say it's definitely because of his sense of harmony and keeping it simple while making it also interesting which is extremely on show in this album and less on his other ones i think most of his abilities shine in live performances as he lets his jazz part go a bit wilder, his quick reharmonizations (e.g. national anthem even though it was heavily influenced by whitney houston's version and i forgot who composed it for her), voice leading are really good and they're really present on voicenotes and this album as a lyricist? eh, he's alright, nothing too groundbreaking but musically he has an enormous amount of talent and i still think he's trying to find the right balance of easy enough to listen to while also being complex enough to use his extensive knowledge on which is a line a lot of pop jazz artists try to walk on but find it extremely difficult to stay constant and not go too much in either direction anyways for a really quick example check out his "how long" performance live at bbc i believe which has a few great reharm sections and listen to "boy" for a really amazing piano solo

Not sure why you're being down voted. There are a handful of musicians I can think of that are so insanely talented but the stuff they're best known for is so deeply irratating to me. It's a reasonable assessment, especially in such a subjective field.

The song with Kenny G is fire, but this loggins and MacDonald song also rips

“Show You the Way” by Thundercat w/ Michael MacDonald and Kenny Loggins is a 🔥 track. I guessing this isn’t much different.
