"This is the same proposal from Senate Democrats—and Republicans—that Johnson rejected days ago, calling it a “c*** sandwich.” So, he ate a c*** sandwich. That's my entire takeaway from this and I will not consider anything less.

there was nothing "jaw-dropping" or "shocking" about what little Mikey approved. Both GOP and Democrats in Senate wanted something positive done, but d***-tator and his little squire are trying to force "Save Act" to steal the 2028 elections. it is on the table in front of all of us.

"Little Squire" is pretty good. I like "Keebler Elf" better.

Prior_Coyote_4376 Apr 2, 2026 +273
It’s *kind* of a win, but it looks like they’re going to use reconciliation to do ICE/CBP funding which only takes a simple majority. Still, it’s nice to have even a brief optical win for a moment
273
CT_Phipps-Author Apr 2, 2026 +241
I mean they'll try to but the fact is that Democrats not caving more or less changes the entire political machinery. It also was actually about Johnson trying to show up the Senate. Which means Johnson's power is broken over the party.

MetalMoneky Apr 2, 2026 +59
GOP Speaker of the house continues to be the worst and most thankless job in Washington.
59
aBrickNotInTheWall Apr 2, 2026 +49
It's hard reconciling the false reality Republicans live in with the real world and that's kind of his job. Take the crazy demands of his delusional colleagues (not to say he isnt) and try to apply them to the real world. I'm glad that everyone degenerate enough to want the position is faced with such tiresome task. I'd still be more glad if they changed tho
49
Quasigriz_ Apr 2, 2026 +20
IDK, maybe if he did his effing job: pass a proper budget. However, dudes not the first one to fail. There is a long tradition. My hope is that one day, they’ll realize they’re the bad guys and start being adults, but I’m not gonna hold my breath. All the shutdown BS is due to every Congress failing to pass a proper budget. It’s been this way for far too long. Maybe, if the House misses their budget deadline it triggers an election and we could literally clean House. A boy can dream….
20
SidratFlush Apr 2, 2026 +6
That would be a great idea. If the current members can't work together a complete election is held for all seats and the people decide who to send or return. Democracy in action.
6
UnguentSlather Apr 2, 2026 +9
What could we possibly thank this dork for?
9
MetalMoneky Apr 2, 2026 +5
Thankless was probably the wrong word but that job had completely destroyed the careers of the last 4 occupants. It seems like a death sentence for anyone taking it.
5
UnguentSlather Apr 2, 2026 +5
Until they become serious legislators with actual budgets and bills to propose that make any sense, it will remain as sacrificial position. Considering that the GOP is all in for whatever idiotic fever dream Trump has on any given day, this is unlikely to change soon.
5
robokomodos Apr 2, 2026 +3
Turns out if you agree to lead the Shit Circus, you get covered in shit
3
IolausTelcontar Apr 2, 2026 +1
You don’t think that’s the fault of the crazies on the Republican side and not the actual job itself?
1
MetalMoneky Apr 2, 2026 +1
oh it's totally the fault of the crazies, but I just have no idea why anyone would want the job. Honestly they should have just let the Dems have the gavel
1
KinkyPaddling Apr 2, 2026 +1
I don’t think Johnson ever had any power. He’s just a puppet for Trump. He remains Speaker only for so long as he sides with Trump. Thune and McConnell had far more of their own power as Senate Majority Leader, in that they both were able to buck Trump without consequence.
1
gakule Apr 2, 2026 +55
Having them burn their only reconciliation bill(s) they have left before midterms is a great outcome - they don't have the ability to cause further harm with other bills. Of course, this is going to bring out the "democrats do nothing, nyeh!" crowd of absolute numskulls, but they were going to be there no matter what.
55
MiracleMan1989 Apr 2, 2026 +16
There’s also limits for what can be in it. It’s unlikely they make a case to include all the anti trans bullshit in a budget bill.
16
ShambolicRubel Apr 2, 2026 +6
Can’t wait to see how they try to put the Save Act into it.
6
smurfsundermybed Apr 2, 2026 +1
I can only think of one way, and it's impossible and they would hate it. As a component of the act, full funding for providing every single eligible voter with the documentation required by the bill, at no cost, before the next ballot is cast, along with automatically sending the necessary documents to all soon to be eligible voters on their 17th birthday.
1
Bittererr Apr 2, 2026 +18
I don't know why people act like they're going to have to "burn" reconciliation on this. The bill can be infinitely large, the reconciliation bill last year was around a thousand pages and accomplished an entire year's worth of the Republican agenda all at once. More funding for ICE will be a footnote in another thousand page bill, like it was last year.
18
gakule Apr 2, 2026 +6
They certainly did not accomplish a year of their agenda with it. They can mostly change funding and taxes, not really any laws in a significant way.
6
Bittererr Apr 2, 2026 +1
With funding you can direct billions and billions of dollars to a paramilitary force directly loyal to the president and then the president can accomplish a bunch of policy purely via executive order. That's precisely what they did last year.
1
gakule Apr 2, 2026 +7
But you just said the whole year was covered via reconciliation. Now it's executive orders? His executive orders have largely been ineffective and regularly shot down in court. Sure, it all still sucks, but maybe we stick to the facts as they are.
7
Due_Bluebird3562 Apr 2, 2026 +1
>force directly loyal to the president and then the president can accomplish a bunch of policy purely via executive order. Well why haven't they done that here? Simple... because EOs are ineffective for large scale items in the agenda. An EO can be struck down just as fast as it is 🖋️. For real policy you need legislation. Congress IS the legislative branch after all.
1
Slggyqo Apr 2, 2026 +15
ICE was fully funded for the rest of trumps presidency already anyway. They got almost 100 billion dollars from the OBBB , which was an overnight 10x increase in their budget. It’s insane that anyone is even considering giving them more money. Take money from ICE to pay for the war in Iran, not medical care.
15
The_Lost_Jedi Apr 3, 2026 +1
It's not 'fully funded.' What they did was allocate a ton of money for ICE expansion over the next 4 years, that is presently being used to fund current operations and salaries of existing ICE agents. They wanted, and want still, more money to fund the regular operations so they don't have to raid that slush fund. I otherwise agree with you though, claw that money back and fund stuff that helps people, not hurts (but these are Republicans we're talking about, the only people they're interested in helping are the ultra wealthy).
1
IPredictAReddit Apr 2, 2026 +67
Democrats get so much unnecessary flack for not "doing something" even though the things they can do, like this, are largely optical because they don't control the House. If D's hadn't done this, half their base would be complaining about them being "controlled opposition" and "both sides are the same!" Which all just serves to weaken Democrats image with their own voters, even though they're doing the right thing.
67
temporarycreature Apr 2, 2026 +44
I'm not sure the flak that the Democrats get is unnecessary because when they do finally get control of Congress history has shown that they pretend everything goes back to normal and they don't actually do a lot to make sure things don't fall apart again should they lose support.
44
krazytekn0 Apr 2, 2026 +19
This. Democrats get blue waves based on the Republican policies that get enacted being horrible, then they don’t reverse those policies and we end up with republicans in power again the next cycle
19
asianApostate Apr 2, 2026 +15
You can't reverse those policies with just congress unless you have 2/3rds, which they have not had in a few decades.  They can prevent bad legislation, appointments, and start investigations like they did with Jan 6th.
15
TransitJohn Apr 2, 2026 -1
Always an excuse. Amazing how Republicans get their heinous shit done without 2/3.
-1
CrashB111 Apr 2, 2026 +6
Name something Republicans have done, that actually involved passing legislation and changing the law? You can't, because they haven't. Everything they have done has been via Executive Orders that immediately get revoked by the next Democrat in office or tied up in court. Or via their capture of the legislative branch via Trump's sycophants. They are fundamentally incapable of passing lasting change via Congress. All they are able to do is tear stuff down via activist judges or executive action. That works to destroy things but you can't really build anything that way.
6
xdre Apr 2, 2026 +5
Because it's far easier to obstruct and destroy than to build up.
5
rabblerabble2000 Apr 2, 2026 +13
Republicans also always have control of the judiciary, which goes a long way towards hampering meaningful legislation. On top of that, the GOP almost always votes in lockstep, whereas there are always a handful of moderate dem spoilers who vote down anything progressive.
13
TransitJohn Apr 2, 2026 -7
Always an excuse why Democrats can't do anything.
-7
rabblerabble2000 Apr 2, 2026 +9
Not an excuse, just a recognition of real world limitations.
9
TransitJohn Apr 2, 2026 -3
That only apply to one political party, for some reason.
-3
FrogsOnALog Apr 2, 2026 +4
Yes. Tax cuts are a budget thing and you can raise taxes too which is what democrats did. Harris wanted to raise them more but we don’t tax cut / day 1 dictator guy again. Also I think there’s another 2/3 you’re missing and that’s the *co-equal* branches of government. Want to guess which one the democrats don’t control? Want to guess which one gutted Roe and the Voting Rights Act of 1965?

The user you’re talking to is one of the captains of the group of people who constantly shit on democrats.
3
Prior_Coyote_4376 Apr 2, 2026 -1
“one of the captains” lmao you make it out to be some kind of conspiracy I just think that when we lose to Trump twice, this guy maybe isn’t the answer to our leadership problems: https://www.instagram.com/p/DLlxiT1oo2F/
-1
FrogsOnALog Apr 2, 2026 +2
Obviously you’re not a captain and don’t lead some group but shitting on dems is all you ever seem to do.
2
Prior_Coyote_4376 Apr 2, 2026 +1
No, it’s just all you ever seem to notice since this is a left-leaning bubble and in an effort to not circlejerk that means I’m interested in internal critique when I participate here, because I genuinely cannot fathom how we lost to Trump twice and believe that it requires the party to have an existential crisis Instead the DNC literally buried its own autopsy report after telling us all not to criticize them until it came out. Are you going to defend that or will you admit that if the DNC wants people like me to shut up, they should at the very least give us their own critiques of themselves so we can collaborate with them on solutions. They explicitly do not want grassroots organizational support while the right welcomes it, and it’s a defining factor in why we’re losing. So as far as I’m concerned, I can’t possibly be harming our chances more than not having that kind of participation at all will.
1
FrogsOnALog Apr 2, 2026 +2
Lol oh please if an article title even includes Jeffries or Schumer in the title people here lose their shit. Also if the autopsy report came out I guarantee you would still be whining about it.
2
The_Lost_Jedi Apr 3, 2026 +1
This is exactly the kind of stuff the Democrats should've been doing all along. The problem has been that too many of them were unwilling to dig in like this, and even if it was only a handful in the Senate during some the earlier shutdown fights, that was too many. And I'm not just talking about listnookors or social media complaints either, the House Democrats were utterly pissed that Schumer and a couple of other Senators caved right after they (the House Dems) had voted in lockstep against. The Republicans blamed the Democrats, and enough of the Democrats caved again in the shutdown fight after that. Hopefully this gives them an appetite for more of it, because the Republicans shouldn't be looking to Democrats for help without noteworthy concessions.
1
Prior_Coyote_4376 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Democrats don’t really get politics, is the problem. They have no idea that you can do things outside of casting a vote in Congress. The concept of using their office as a bully pulpit or a focal point of organizing to lead a movement is just completely lost on them. 50501, Indivisible, No Kings, Fuel the Flare, all of these are grassroots movements from people who are FAR less empowered than your standard even state Assembly level Democrat. We have reporting about how these groups reach out to Hakeem Jeffries and the DNC, but Jeffries dismissed them as “annoying”. That’s a completely fucked way to react to your constituents organizing after you admit you don’t have leverage to do anything. MLK Jr wasn’t a politician, and he sure got a lot done at a time when he was a second-class citizen simply because he was willing to actually do coalition-building politics. Democrats don’t do that anymore. That’s where they get completely deserved flak. I mean seriously: https://www.instagram.com/p/DLlxiT1oo2F/ “Protecting your healthcare is as American as baseball, motherhood and apple pie 🇺🇸” How f****** condescending is this bullshit? You know Elissa Slotkin stole that exact line for her SOTU rebuttal right? “as American as apple pie” like come the f*** on, you can’t even write your own stump speeches? Then what is your job because you’re not writing legislation, you’re not building coalitions, you’re not doing media pushes, you’re not recruiting new younger talent, you’re not writing your own books or speeches, you’re not protesting, you’re not building mutual aid networks, you’re not spotlighting constituent case work… literally what is your job????

LOL if you think Ben Nelson was gonna vote for Universal Health Care in the 21-day window in which Democrats had the supermajority. Obamacare was absolutely 100% the furthest step that could have happened in any scenario. We got as much as we could possibly get, and your retrospective "both sides" is just plain ignorance. Look, you and I are probably in the same coalition and working for the same goals. So as someone who will gladly pick up whatever cause you're interested in, let me tell you something: this sort of ignorance to how legislation and policy is made only serves the people who want to stop this coalition.
24
Thrown-Away-User-23 Apr 2, 2026 +13
I mean that is holding the less accountable party in this mess to a higher standard. That's fine except demonizing the main group that stands to continue making some progress in slowing this nonsense until we can start reversing it will impact their actual success in doing so. Pick-a-side isn't my favorite style of politics but it beats fascism squarely. We shouldn't make perfect the enemy of good.
13
Gen_monty-28 Apr 2, 2026 +16
What does this even mean??? When democrats have power they do big things. The window you are talking about was remarkably narrow with only a few months where Dems had a super majority and had to ensure Joe Lieberman would support any healthcare bill to have a chance. Ted Kennedy dying also really hurt the momentum for the healthcare fight at a critical moment. Yes Obama had to scale back ambitions to get something through but it still helped tens of millions. But no just claim universal healthcare was really on the table when it wasn’t and ignore what Dems actually achieve when they have a narrow opportunity.
16
FrogsOnALog Apr 2, 2026 +2
Control of all three branches?!? Lmao buddy the House and Senate are part the same f****** branch…
2
IolausTelcontar Apr 2, 2026 +2
And we still would have had 18 years of Rs dismantling it.

If it helps the Dems realize that they should be utilizing 100% of their obstructive power at this point in US history, then that is a positive.
8
LunaLovesly Apr 2, 2026 +3
Sure but there's goes their reconciliation. Ice is highly unpopular too so that won't do them any services for the midterms either and will help lock in a dem win more. We need Dems in office who will prosecute these fucks and you don't get that by sitting on your hands going "what can we do"
3
arwinda Apr 2, 2026 +3
If they use reconciliation, the problem comes back later this year. Around the time of the midterms, will see another big shutdown.
3
Anti_Up_Up_Down Apr 2, 2026 +2
That is a win, now they can't use it for some other garbage legislation
2
Arickettsf16 Apr 2, 2026 +2
>they’re going to use reconciliation Fine, let them. You only get to do so many of these so they can waste it on this if that’s what they want to do.
2
Bob_Obloooog Apr 2, 2026 +2
That probably won't pass with the senate parliamentaian. Thune already said he'd abide by her decision.
2
ericstc Apr 2, 2026 +2
Not just an optical win. It's also a denial of Trump's demand to pass the SAVE act. This bill as a whole can't pass muster for inclusion in a reconciliation effort, according Senate leaders, so Trump badly wanted to use the shutdown as leverage to enact it now. We'll see if they can part and parcel it out in smaller pieces, but the teeth of it (like full proof of citizenship at voter registration) are unlikely to make it without new maneuvering.
2
bprevatt Apr 2, 2026 +7
They didn’t cave to Dems. They caved to their own incompetence. And the polls that show Trump in the 30’s.
7
KazeNilrem Apr 2, 2026 +68
Unfortunately they will still come out on top in terms of the funding. Which is what made this entire situation bs. They will pass a bill without funding the two entities. Then they will rely on the reconciliation bill to pass funding for the two, which made the whole screwing over workers completely unnecessary. We could have had this done a long time ago. We could have trump use EO (granted illegally) to get them funded this whole time. But no, it is all political bs. These people disgust me.
68
FigmentRedditUser Apr 2, 2026 -38
Yep. It's amazing how many people, Mike Johnson included, don't seem to know how this process works. The Republicans are winning with this deal. There are no reforms. There is no funding either for ICE and CBP but Repugs can resolve the later issue later via reconciliation process which can't be filibustered. The Democrats have lost.
-38
END3R97 Apr 2, 2026 +21
Reconciliation can only be used once a year though. Making republicans use it for this instead of something worse is still a win (and just about the best Democrats can get out of them)
21
CrashB111 Apr 2, 2026 +24
>The Democrats have lost. No, no they didn't. But don't let that stop you from doom posting anyways.
24
NicolasCageFan492 Apr 2, 2026 +24
This is not true. 1. It hasn’t happened yet, 2. Reconciliation requires everything to be related to taxing and spending, so the senate parliamentarian will likely take out anything unrelated to taxing and spending. You’re just blackpilled or you have an agenda. You’re a gamer, so I assume you’re blackpilled because the real world doesn’t give as much dopamine as video games.
24
Suthrnr Apr 2, 2026 -1
You almost made a good point and then went down the "video games bad" brainwashed boomer take that politicians shovel out, lol
-1
NicolasCageFan492 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Video games not bad, I like games, but they do deliver a lot of dopamine and it causes people to become detached from the real world because things that are not video games are not as appealing. It’s like eating lots of sugar making other foods seem less sweet by comparison. Just my $0.02 as a former gaming addict.
3
Due_Bluebird3562 Apr 2, 2026 +2
>The Republicans are winning with this deal. There are no reforms. There is no funding either for ICE and CBP but Repugs can resolve the later issue later via reconciliation process which can't be filibustered. Utilization of reconciliation means that their primary agenda (which is currently trying to pass the SAVE Act in some form or fashion) takes a backseat to ICE bullshit.

The optics of a failed political philosophy, in this case the Republican trampling of the Constitution, is in some cases all that matters. In the simple world of Truck Stop, Dive Bar and Boardroom politics it is everything that matters. As the article above points out, this it's a quite simply a win... for all Americans. This win or loss for politicians is the same primal state of fear they live with every day, a system they created which allows the future of their jobs to rest on how they voted for a single bill. Their jobs rely on their party supporting them, which means they have to support their party for good or bad. This explains completely the dismal state of American politics. What they all seems to forget is their vote is also the driving force behind whether everyday Americans can afford food, drive cars, and not be arrested for looking to brown. We are a two-party system, for better or worst operating under the umbrella of a Democracy of 50 States united together by a document of Constitutional Law, which each State agreed to follow, to insure all people in each state are treated equally. We now find ourselves in chaos, a state of confusion created by petty men who want to change the Constitution in order to benefit the small wealthy minority in our country, whether it hurts the vast majority of Americans no matter which party you belong too. Our current government ruled by Trump is wounding all Americans daily. They do this by taking money from wealthy Americans who consider themselves our ruling class. Who are no more than average Americans with a lot of money, who have elevated themselves to become members of a ruling class, by the simple rule of allowing themselves to be bribed. We now live in a country not ruled by a Congress that answers to the people who voted for them, but by a Cartal, led by an vindictive Warlord who controls the purse strings of America, named Trump. As Voters we must Overthrow and Fire this Warlord, as he has taken the control of our government out of the hands of the people, by lies, intimidation and fear, and further crashed the independent Political party system in our Country, by turning the Grand Old Party, a comedic pseudo-Christian far right movement, he renamed MAGA, which supports fascist rules of law, as a way of enriching himself and those around him, in ways that is destroying our Sacred Democracy. We must instead bring our government back into the hands of the Voters themselves.

Props to the Democrats for sticking to their guns on this one. Hopefully it’ll embolden the Party to maintain its backbone for future resistance (and I think the [30+ flips of various seats across the country has given the Democrats the confidence to fight back](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/democrats-win-another-special-election-170917184.html)).
