This is what should’ve happened for more child actors

A lot of child actors have stage parents who are just as damaging

Miley’s comments mention that in the linked article.
Her parents were already successful and “stable”, so she wasn’t a child star whose career was the main family source of income.
So her parents didn’t have the motive to be as overbearing as many other stage parents.

First hand account: Was one the show for a few episodes, background.
One of the crew, some English lady name Tina, pretty much told us to piss off and do not bother anyone on set, don’t eat their food, don’t breath (that’s standard Disney treatment on any set for non-Union background)
Complied each day, one of them I was waiting for the crew to eat first for lunch (we are told to go last)
While waiting with my fellow background Billy came up ask asked us what we hadn’t started eating yet, we told him we were waiting for the crew first. He said “No, no you guys are part of the crew, go in front of me and get yourself something to eat”
Not 20 seconds later did we hear Tina start barking at us and rush us when Billy cut her off and said “Leave them alone, I told them to go eat”
It’s non of my business to judge Billy’s personally life posted in the tabloids, all I’ll say is he had our back that day. Grateful, thanks for letting us eat lunch Billy!

They are. There are more protections in place for their earnings, education, and mental health overall. It's not perfect because there are still shitty, manipulative parents, but it is better than it was.

OH hell yeah. Entire laws have been passed and under-18 set work is severely restricted. and it's not catch-all. A baby's time on set is incredibly limited. it's highly dictated now.
and in general the North American unions have made a huge push in the last 10+ years to improve hirings, workplace behavior, deal with bigotry etc
28
The_MagicMar 19, 2026

Its better today than it used to be, especially on a union set. Still not the ideal environment for kids though.

Of course. Relatively speaking we live in the safest, most convenient era of history. And these aspects are only improving as time goes on.
The problem is that "safest" in this context is relative to the past, not the likelihood that something bad will happen due to negligence, abuse, or otherwise. So long as Hollywood continues to hire children as actors, there will always be a non-zero percent chance of risk. The best we can do is mitigate that risk to as close to zero as possible.

I’m really close friends with a famous child actor. She told me the difference between the kids who were able to live a normal life after acting and those who weren’t was the presence of a parent on set.

She seems very well adjusted as an adult. How was she not protected? Her going wild happened in her 20s - like most folks - and served her career post Disney. Dolly Parton is her godmother and has always supported and mentored her. She’s probably one of the luckiest child stars in a generation when it comes to protection and parents knowing the industry. Her and her dad had a falling out post divorcing her mom, but she was an adult then - they’ve recovered.
Edit: and Dolly has seen some shit as she started at 14 in the industry in a much rougher era for women.

> Her going wild happened in her 20s - like most folks - and served her career post Disney.
My assumption was that her going wild in her 20s was an intentional attempt to distance herself from the Disney image.
24

Yeah - It was both imo. If she left Hollywood she would have still had some sort of era less curated. People judged her for it way too much.
4
VictorReal_MonsterMar 19, 2026

Also her wild was *exceptionally* mild compared to a lot of others than came not long before here (Amanda, Lindsey, Brit).
I remember her getting caught smoking weed as being the beginning of that era and the most she did was reveal some skin and get some tattoos, had a messy on off relationship with someone her own age.
Literally normal people shit

Are there fewer child actors in the industry now in 2026? Or are we just hearing less of their names because none of them have the talent in comparison to the likes of the Olsens, the Fannings, JTT, Anna Sophia Robb, Josh Hutcherson, Canadian Teen Actors of the 2000s-2010s, etc?
4

Granted it is still not that recent but you are skipping over a generation of Zendaya, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Jake Paul, Olivia Holt, Dove Cameron, Peyton List, and I am sure more I am forgetting.
9
bebespeaksMar 19, 2026
+3
That generation was happening on TV by the time I was in my early 20s, and I was already emotionally removed from even the most intense episodes of Good Luck Charlie (I still am confused which few episodes were produced WithOUT a laugh track, I want to watch those ones only to see the difference). Seasons 10 and 11 of Degrassi (the Ali drama and Eli bipolar issues) were the last two seasons of any teen show I kept up on.
3
Draw-Two-CardsMar 19, 2026

At least you went out on peak. I actually find it crazy that this generation doesn't have a Degrassi.
4
bebespeaksMar 19, 2026

I wish today's kids had a simplified tv show like seasons 1-2 of Degrassi, without chaotic and over exaggerated plots and 25yr old actors playing 13-18yr olds (ahem, Jason Earles at 28yrs old playing Jackson on Hannah Montana, and Corey Montieth 27yrs old playing Finn on Glee). I never watched Euphoria but heard it was just sex and drugs for 22-30yr olds cosplaying as teenagers for Netflix money.
1
Draw-Two-CardsMar 19, 2026

I love the show but the first episode of TNG has Emma moments away from being raped by a sexual predator and the season ends with Ashley taking ecstasy and actually being raped.
3
VictorReal_MonsterMar 19, 2026
+2
Yeah TNG was dark and full of terrors haha.
But I will maintain it's actually one of the better 'educational' tools, because it wasn't ever really that preachy imo, it was just here are some kids and their lives are messy, if they just talked to their parents it would mostly be okay (since we could have literally watch those parents go through the exact same things a decade prior)

Back then Disney/Nick basically made household names, now everything’s spread out so no one hits that same level of fame. Plus a lot of shows cast older actors to play teens anyway.

possibly relevant:
It occurred to me a few years ago that there aren't *near* the amount of kids/family movies like there were in the 90s. Three Ninjas series, Mighty Ducks, Sandlot, Beethoven, Surf Ninjas, Matilda, Hook, Parent Trap, It Takes Two, an entire slew of Disney Movies like Halloween Town, 13th Year, ~~That snowboarding one with the kid from Hawaii~~ Johnnt Tsunami, Smart House, etc.
I admit I havent kept up with everything that the disney channel has put straight to tv or D+ in the last 10-15 years, but it certainly feels we dont see near as many kid oriented feature films.
Im...actually struggling to think of any recently, actually.
