Are we going to actually believe the government? Or have aid groups also confirmed this.
ETA: Looks like its atleast the US Coast Guard which is a little more reliable than others but still they have only heard word themselves and no confirmation from any other groups but hopefully we soon will if I didn't miss the confirmation elsewhere.

Really suspicious that it made no mention of what happened and why there was no contact for a few days
Maybe they were boarded and detained by a certain coast guard

My best guess is that they turned off AIS to avoid being interdicted, and people freaked out thinking they sunk.

>> Later on Friday the US Coast Guard, which was not involved in search efforts, announced it had received a report at 10.36am (2.36pm GMT) that “the two vessels safely transited to Cuba”.
No explanation why they had disappeared to begin with but glad they were found safe.
On a separate but related note, given everything that's going on with the Iran War and how the US has betrayed its allies time and time again, why don't countries defy the bullying and threats and start supplying Cuba with oil instead of being terrified about potential tariffs that may not even come to fruition? I feel like Cuba has been forgotten ever since the war. It's so completely disgusting with this administration is doing. Can't wait for the complete destruction of the US empire.

The simple fact is angering the US will mean massive economic harm is heading your way. There's not too many nations that will risk that to help Cuba.

Cuba tied itself to the USSR decades ago and as such doesn't really have much of a relationship with Western countries in a position to help.

I understand that but is what the US doing even legal? They're not even letting Cuba's allies supply oil... this is out and out Mafia Style bullying.
My point is that its (former ?) allies are finally beginning to acknowledge injustice of what the US is doing by refusing to get into the Iran War - you think that they would have a stronger backbone and help Cuba under these extreme circumstances. Which country can survive without oil in today's society? they've now gone 4 months. What's not to say that Trump won't threaten to increase the tariffs regardless because NATO members didn't help with the war? Also didn't the US Supreme Court find the tariffs illegal? Bottom line Western countries are cowards. Cuba has stood up to the US for the past 70 years, Western country should learn something here.

They weren't. That's the whole point. That's why they were having blackouts for years.
And they were trading a bunch of people to do security for Maduro in exchange for oil.
They've been receiving it on charity mostly.
That just doesn't last forever

This is blatant propaganda.
Cuba had a very successful program where they provided doctors to many other Caribbean and South American countries.
In addition to that the massive tourist industry.
Other than those services above they have a large cigar and rum industry for finished goods.
Cuba is able to buy it's oil.

>Cuba had a very successful program where they provided doctors to many other Caribbean and South American countries.
Had.
The Peak: A decade ago, Venezuela sent ~100,000 barrels per day (bpd) in exchange for medical services.
The Reality now: Due to the collapse of Venezuelan infrastructure and more recent U.S. interventions in early 2026, those shipments have slowed to a trickle.
The Result: Cuba still has the doctors, but they no longer have a partner willing (or able) to trade oil for them at that scale. Other countries (like Brazil or Mexico) often pay for doctors in cash, but that cash is currently being eaten up by other crises.
>In addition to that the massive tourist industry.
Other than those services above they have a large cigar and rum industry for finished goods.
The 2025-2026 Slump: Recent data shows tourism arrivals in 2025 were nearly 25% lower than 2024.
The Paradox: To get tourists, you need air conditioning, cold food, and working lights. When the grid fails, tourists stop coming. When tourists stop coming, the government loses the hard currency ($USD/Euros) needed to buy the oil to run the grid.
The "Leakage": Much of the tourism revenue goes back out of the country immediately to import the food and luxury goods that tourists expect, leaving very little "profit" for fuel.
The infrastructure is old and collapsing as well
Analysts estimate that it would cost roughly $10 billion to modernize Cuba's electrical grid. To put that in perspective:
The Budget Gap: Cuba's current economic situation is arguably the worst since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.
Misaligned Spending: Interestingly, internal 2026 investment plans show that the government is still putting about 67% of its "strategic investment" into things like steel and cement (often linked to hotel construction and tourism) rather than the power grid.
Soviet-Era "Rust Buckets"
The backbone of their power is a handful of thermoelectric plants built 40 to 50 years ago.
The Guiteras Failure: The massive blackout on March 16th was triggered by a simple boiler leak at the Antonio Guiteras plant. In a modern grid, a single boiler leak is a maintenance issue; in Cuba, it caused a cascading failure that disconnected the entire country from Camagüey to Pinar del Río.
Efficiency: These plants currently operate at an average of just 34% capacity. They are so fragile that when the frequency drops—even slightly—because they don't have enough fuel, the machines automatically shut down to prevent themselves from literally exploding.
Cuba cannot afford to buy the amount of oil it needs or the infrastructure on the global market.
