>S.B. 2632 offers loans to local governments to help pay for damages and recovery from Winter Storm Fern in January. The bill originally included a provision that loans would be charged 1% interest monthly. > > Reeves accused Deweese of moving for unanimous consent in the House to remove the word “monthly” from the line dictating the interest rate, meaning the interest rate for loan recipients would be 1% annually. **That’s** what he’s upset about. He’s trying to claim that the House amended the bill after it was presented for signature, but the article verifies that’s incorrect and it was amended before delivery. He’s pissed off that they can’t charge storm victims a 12x higher interest rate on their rebuilding loans.

He just wants to casually have all the cities in the state paying on 12.7% loans? That’s like predatory car loan bad.

That's almost as high as my student loans were.

Wait what? I always knew in the US student loans were the norm and is run by private corps like fanny Mae but I never actually looked into it. I just assumed since education is so important that even if you have to pay for it it’d be on something like an interest free or at least low interest rate loans Anything above 5% is egregious. American interest rates aren’t even that f****** high! What is the justification?

thisvideoiswrong Mar 31, 2026 +296
So there are a few things to understand about the US system. First, education is never discussed as a benefit for society. It's an individual thing, you choose to get an education for your own benefit, so because you got such a nice thing you can't complain about the costs. That also means that if you were smart you'd get an education in something that's going to pay well in a decade, and if you fail to predict the future accurately, or worse you get your education in something worthless like the history of fascist states or the workings of alternative economic systems, then you deserve to be poor. There's also some difference between federal loans and bank loans, the federal ones usually being slightly less predatory, although apparently federal loan interest rates have skyrocketed over the last few years. Either way, though, you have to understand that this isn't like a normal loan, they're taking a big risk on you, since you don't have any income yet and there's no car or house for them to repossess if you can't pay. So obviously it would be unfair to the lender to expect them to charge a normal interest rate, or if it were legal for you to declare bankruptcy and have the court let you out of it. The poor innocent banks need careful protection from these greedy malicious college students, obviously. All of that being said, the current federal interest rates [can be found here](https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/loans/interest-rates) and are between 6 and 10%, not 12%. But federal loans don't cover everything, and private loans can be a very different story, totally dependent on who you got them from and when. So it's definitely a very messed up system deserving all the sarcasm in the world. Edit: I also have to add that this has a direct impact on our medical costs, as well. Every doctor has to first go through college, during which they'll collect a bunch of debt, and then go through even more years of medical school, which is even more expensive and has even worse loan rates. So, by the time they get to actually treating patients as full fledged doctors they're drowning in debt. They have to have high salaries just to keep up, and then more on top of that before it can begin to look worth it. Add that to the horrific inefficiencies of our insurance system, and our refusal to make any attempt to control costs, and here we are.

One could argue that since the loans are practically inescapable, they are zero risk to lenders but that sounds like socialism /s

The only time any of my loans were under 6% was during Covid. I was able to refinance one of my 12% ones down 7.8%. my 7% ones went down to 2.25 for awhile, and my federal loans are fixed at 6.25%. That's why we are bitching about student loan relief. It's not that we don't want to pay them back, it's that the interest rates as so high, a lot of us can't pay them back. You pay every month, and sometimes it doesn't even cover the interest, and they apply it to accrued interest before they apply to principal, so you just never get out of it. I've been paying for 15 years, and just paid my last private loan off two weeks ago. Interest totals have been nearly 50% of the principal balance. Meaning, I didn't just pay an extra 6% on top of my principal. Let's say I borrowed 30k. I paid 14k in interest, so on just that loan, I paid what I borrowed 1.5 times. Now multiple that by all 6 loans I had. It's not that we don't want to pay back what we borrowed, we would just like the same low interest rates banks and corporations get to utilize. I started my adult life owing $1200 a month in 2011. That was practically everything I was making, and since they were all through different servicers, it was the lowest payment I could get, being on all of their income driven repayment plans. I was luckily able to take advantage of the low interest rates during Covid, and got a better job during that time. Between Covid, and the SAVE plan being tied up in the courts right now, I've made two payments on the federal loans since 2020, and they only recently started accruing interest. The only way I was able to speed up repayment was because of a global pandemic that killed millions, and interest relief.

thingsorfreedom Apr 1, 2026 +2
Don't forget those hefty origination fees. You are also paying a lot if interest on money the banks pocketed before giving you a smaller amount to pay for school.

campelm Mar 31, 2026 +10
Congress sets the rate and there's different rates for subsidized and unsubsidized loans. My subsidized loans are pretty reasonable. The unsubs are the highest interest rate I'm paying for anything (I don't have cc debt). Higher than car, house etc
10
kelpyb1 Mar 31, 2026 +8
Notably, this is for public loans. A loan as high as 12% is likely a private loan.
8
Sitchrea Mar 31, 2026 +5
Yep, the current federal student loan APR (as set by congress) is 6.39%.
5
DaughterOfTheStars18 Mar 31, 2026 +5
My federal student loans have rates between 3-10% I was 18 when I got some of those with no credit history. Some I’m (apparently??) being charged interest on daily now. I took out a total of like $50,000. I owe over $68,000 now. America sucks.
5
techleopard Mar 31, 2026 +9
This .. was... the entire reason we needed to forgive the loans. There are millions of people walking around with loans averaging 9%, and they are negatively amortized, so they have spent decades just GAINING principle that is then charged MORE interest. The "payment plans" offered by the DOED do not actually pay off the loans. Anything less than the minimum standard payment will never reduce the size of the loan, only grow it. Yet we needed all these payment plans to HIDE the fact that over 60-70% of them should now be in default. That would do more than cripple borrowers. That's millions of people who won't even be able to get jobs because they owe thousands to the government, and then can't get public assistance aid. Starting to look ugly now, right? But no. Let's just squeal moronically about PeRsOnAl ReSpOnSiBiLiTy like that will undo 30-40 years of economic depression and a lack of life savings. Let's not even talk about giving teenagers massive loans using master promissories with lending terms that would never be permitted in any other kind of loan due to how predatory it is.

Moshimoshi-Megumin Mar 31, 2026 +4
Federally backed loans are 7%, but they cap at about 10K a year. It isn’t enough unless you go to a local state university, which isn’t the best option in some fields. Private loans depend on lot, especially your/your co-signer’s credit. They can go as low as 4% and as high as like 18%. The justification is…because they can. Like everything else in the US, if there are no laws against it, they’ll rob you as much as they can. And the people writing the laws are financed by the people doing the robbing, so nothing changes.
4
wyldmage Mar 31, 2026 +2
American interest rates aren't that high? * Typical credit cards offer 16 to 30% interest rates. * Typical short term loans (payday loans) were often 20-40% APR until those got shut down by the government. * Typical bank loans are 10-20%. * Typical student loans are 6-10%. * Typical car loans are 5-10%. * Typical home loans (mortgages) are 3-7%. All of these numbers are a a LOW point right now. If the federal reserve raised interest rates again, they'd all go up.
2
High-Priest-of-Helix Mar 31, 2026 +3
Most of this isn't true. Federal student loans are run by the government, full stop. The gov hires private companies to service the loans, but the money goes back to the government. Fannie Mae deals in mortgages, not student loans. Loans are absolutely predatory, but they're in the 6-9% range, not 12+.
3
RolliFingers Mar 31, 2026 +45
Federal student loads only go so far, I was only able to borrow ~50,000 from the feds, which was only ~20% of my total tuition costs.
45
Equivalent_Bunch_187 Mar 31, 2026 +30
The real shame here is that a degree is costing you $250,000. I went to what was considered an expensive private school in my area in the early 2010’s and it was 24k a year for tuition, room, and board.
30
RolliFingers Mar 31, 2026 +14
True that. It was out of state tuition, because the degree I wanted was offered at a grand total of 5 schools in the US. (For context, this was mid 2010s). Additionally , it took me 5 years because I went into it with like only a single year of *true* highschool education, as I spent most of my H.S. career in vo-tech classes or working a co-op job. Thankfully I came out of it with a good career (even if it's not in that field) or I'd be TOTALLY fucked. Even so, fresh out of college, I was paying nearly 3k a month, and only able to survive because I was living at my parents. Tuition is completely out of control.
14
dingosaurus Mar 31, 2026 +9
> I was paying nearly 3k a month How. The. F*** are people supposed to actually live paying that much? I'm *reasonably* well paid, yet my take-home would be destroyed by that being twice what I pay for rent + car loan
9
RolliFingers Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yeah, I really don't know. Like I said, I was lucky that I could live rent-free with my parents, and I had a piece of shit car that I owned outright. Because nearly all of the ~50k/year was going directly to student loans. After refinancing several times, I'm still paying ~1,300/month on a ~130k principal. I'm extremely lucky that I haven't struggled as hard with this as I could have, and I KNOW there are people much less fortunate than me who are basically fucked for the rest of their lives.

5
Were_Bear Mar 31, 2026 +17
Some student loans go through the government, but the government will only give you so much. Should you need more than what they decide, and remember college/university is stupidly expensive in the states, you also have to get private student loans which can absolutely reach 12%. I had one that was at 11.5% for my final year.
17
eezeepeezeebreezee Mar 31, 2026 +8
Man that’s crazy Not sure what your thoughts are on this but to me, paying for education is one thing and a whole other can of worms, but charging over 10% interest on a student loan seems extremely fucked up.

It's not even loans to individuals, it's loans from the state gov to local govs. The goal must be to stop local governments from seeking state money. That's the kind of interest you pay on private non-mortgage loans, which makes it pretty clear he wants small local governments to take those loans from private lenders (and enrich banks even more). I'm sure there are plenty of Chinese firms willing to step in and lend money to rural America, and shortly own huge swaths of it.

>“I believe very strongly in what the Bible says, and the Bible’s very clear that ‘Whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life,’” Reeves said. “And, that is my worldview, it’s how I believe, it’s what drives me every single day, and I think it’s what drives a large number of Mississippians. We should take necessary precautions with respect to COVID, but we also understand that we do have everlasting life if we believe in Jesus, if we believe in God the father, and I certainly do.” Interesting guy, wonder how he feels about Leviticus? >“If one of your brethren becomes poor, and falls into poverty among you, then you shall help him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you. >Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you. >You shall not lend him your money for usury, nor lend him your food at a profit.”

If the loan interest is only 1% that makes the NPV to the lender go into the negative when the WACC is 5 to 11%.  What Im saying is a 1% interest rate will limit the amount of liquidity provided.
2
JunkSack Mar 31, 2026 +2
Its a loan from the state to local municipalities right? I know the state still needs to keep things in order, but the point should be to help their citizens, not make sure it’s a “sound financial investment”. It’s like saying USPS “loses” money every year.

This is so dumb. Here's the timeline: * March 12: Mississippi Senate adopts the conference report on SB 2362. * March 13: Sen. Tyler McCaughn (R-Newton) makes the motion for unanimous consent from the Senate to remove the word “monthly” from S.B. 2632. Senate agrees. * March 16: State House Speaker and  Lt. Gov. sign the bill and send it to the Governor. * March 17: Sen. Hob Bryan (D-Amory) brings a motion about modifying the language of *a completely different f****** bill.* * March 30: Governor Dumbfuck vetos the bill accusing Bryan and the clerk of conspiring to change the language of the bill after it was voted on, because he thought Bryan was motioning about this bill on the 17th.

Oregon is down in the 40s in most education rankings that I've seen posted lately to r/oregon and r/portland. Take that how you will. I sub, and am a lifelong resident. Edit: when I was in high-school in the early 2000s, we were consistently top 10 in the country.
43
Paid_Redditor Mar 31, 2026 +22
I’ve been entertaining the idea of moving to Oregon, and school systems were one of the first things we looked into. I don’t think Oregon education is necessarily bad, but rather they rank extremely low because there is no requirement for kids to be in school and therefore a shitload of kids don’t go to class in comparison to other states that require kids in seats for funding. In return those kids are failing classes at a high rate, simply because they don’t go.
22
mmmeeeeeeeeehhhhhhh Mar 31, 2026 +2
Yes but also the schools don't really where your kids are, so that adds to those statistics. From experience, multiple kids at multiple schools, your child may very well be at school and the school wouldn't know it. I have received the school's absent calls for my kids just to have their dad (my ex) check the tracking app they follow eachother on, and nope, my kid is at school in class, or on a fieldtrip that 6 teachers and myself signed permission for. And I am absolutely not the only parent who has experienced this.
2
dreamnightmare Mar 31, 2026 +11
Both. My sister is a Kindergarten teacher here (Mississippi). They made major changes to reading over the last ten years. Back to phonics instead of sight words and actively screening for dyslexia for example. At the same time Covid wrecked the rest of the country’s scores. I’m willing to bet Mississippi drops back down in the next few years. Maybe not all the way back down but definitely not in the top ten. That being said Mississippi schools are thrown off by the crazy underperforming schools that the regular ones simply can’t compensate. It’s not as bad as it seems. The average school is pretty decent. We had whatever was the highest ranking the government gives for schools at all of the schools in my county at one point.
11
lethargy86 Mar 31, 2026 +6
Both for sure. There are a lot of places that were historically good education-wise that have been getting hit hard by cuts and terrible, corrupt literacy programs. They're expensive and do not improve outcomes (and if anything, make it worse, by discarding phonics--just google anti-phonics--it's literally dumbfounding). Another reply is highlighting Oregon. Case-in-point for the current anti-phonics swing that hasn't course-corrected yet. Its teachers are 50/50 on whether they've been trained on scientifically-proven reading instruction. That's perhaps one of the biggest issues. We're seeing the impact of expensive college education. Kids aren't learning because their teachers frankly didn't learn so well themselves, by getting teaching degrees from cheaper online colleges with demonstrably inferior programs. I mean, they'd be financially ruined by going to a more expensive college for a career and commensurate paycheck as a teacher. But why can't these thriftier institutions just instruct teachers on how to teach kids how to read properly? Surely, it can't be *that* expensive? Beats me. Whole thing is really messed-up.

Moreso when you heavily invest in training educators on the science of reading with a heavy emphasis on phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary, you can improve.

It’s literally NAEP scores which are the same test for all states. But go off.

Crazy part is that the man won reelection by a mere ~27000 votes. For red Mississippi, the 2023 election was “hella close.”

Raus-Pazazu Mar 31, 2026 +16
Hope for the best but as a resident here, you 'might' get a surprise upset in a governor's race, or maybe a senate seat, but that won't be enough to turn anything here blue by a long shot and you can count on it getting corrected by the voters come the following cycle. There's a swatch of blue, but there's a lot of disenfranchisement that keeps their turnout low enough to not count for much, and there's so much fear mongering misinformation that energizes the GOP base here that nothing is going to change for another two generations in the absolute best case scenario. Even if you did squeak a win with a Democratic Governor, they'd be hamstrung by the regular super majorities in both the House and Senate.

LivingCustomer9729 Mar 31, 2026 +10
Oh I’m very aware, I live in the state. For the complaining I see towards Reeves from Republicans, they sure didn’t care when they voted for him the second time. If Presley had won, like you stated, our situation would’ve been similar to Kentucky’s.

dreamnightmare Mar 31, 2026 +7
Mississippian We nearly voted in someone else last go around. It was actually super close. I knew they were scared when I received almost weekly a flyer in the mail listing all the “Evil democrat” things the opponent did. Some of them were comical (He bought a piece of Hunter Biden’s art) because they really had to scrape the barrel for the guy who seemed to be just a normal dude who was competent at his job. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Usually you barely know an election is happening. Some signs around and stuff but nothing crazy.

Simon_Jester88 Mar 31, 2026 +6
From what I remember he gets really skinny, then gets muscle work done, which leads to the BPC but then it is all lost when he lands in a vat of lard, eats it all and becomes fat again. A roller coaster of events truly.

Favorite part of the article is when he brings into question whether any other bills he’s signed while in office were edited before he signed them. Like gee if only someone would bother reading them before he put his signature on them.

The corrupt GOP governor vetos a bill because he wants to charge local governments 12% interest, instead of 1% interest - this tracks with everything we see from the corrupt and feckless GOP Idiots that get elected in our country.

makina323 Mar 31, 2026 +55
Imagine using tax money to help people. How dare these savages.
55
jackrabbit323 Mar 31, 2026 +22
California takes a lot of c*** from other states, sometimes rightfully so, but why do we pay taxes to prop states that are little more than third world countries, run by people who hate their our own citizenry?

Everyone in Mississippi didn’t vote for this and it’s incredibly difficult to leave a state with one of the lowest average incomes in the country.

As a native Mississippian, the only thing that would surprise me about my home state government would be if they did anything at all that was for the good of the people.
18
Cheap_Grocery8634 Mar 31, 2026 +17
It's wild that the real scandal here is trying to squeeze desperate communities for more interest. This veto tells you exactly who he's working for, and it's not the people cleaning up after a storm. No wonder the corruption feels so blatant.
17
PrivateBozo Mar 31, 2026 +2
That bill is about keeping poor areas poor. the truly ironic part is MAGA hates and distrusts the government yet most of them have lived their entire life in an area where their people have run the government their whole life.

Native Mississippian here. Incest isn’t really a thing in Mississippi. I’ve never met someone who was the product of it from here. Alabama, however, I’ve met at least three confirmed examples. I really wish I was joking.

Several_Zombie7330 Mar 31, 2026 +15
It's truly appalling that the core issue here is trying to profit off disaster victims with predatory interest rates.

Sweet sweet special tater tot. Like a bucket of mayonnaise left in the sun. Just driving the state of Mississippi off every bridge he can.

War1today Mar 31, 2026 +9
S.B. 2632 offers loans to local governments to help pay for damages and recovery from Winter Storm Fern in January. The bill originally included a provision that loans would be charged 1% interest monthly = 12% annually. The governor is angry that the interest rate was changed to 1% annually which was approved by both chambers and was the intended number in the original bill.
9
Tedsallis Mar 31, 2026 +8
F****** turd wanted that 12%. Such an a******.
8
guy_incognito42069 Mar 31, 2026 +15
No offense Mississippi but damn he looks like the most Mississippi governor possible. Like pull straight out of some movie about the south where it turns out he’s like grand cyclops or whatever dumb shit they call themselves in the Klan.
15
Daddio209 Mar 31, 2026 +7
Holy Hannah! The REAL story her see is: MS Legislators did something to help their constituents and local government. The Governor refusing to sign the bill, and making a bunch of false claims and threats because giving Mississippians a break at the expense of his doners is EXACTLY what's expected/not news
7

Stay classy, Mississippi. Heaven forbid you make one single good god damned decision. Fuckin Peter Griffin looking moron.
5
asimplescribe Mar 31, 2026 +6
He wants the 1% interest rate applied monthly instead of annually to those that needed loans for winter storm recovery. The rest of the government got together and removed the word "monthly" and he is upset that his constituents are not paying a 12X higher interest rate.
6
rgumai Mar 31, 2026 +13
I know Mississippi is purported to be the dumbest state in the US, and that is correct, it is.
13
Infamous-Sky-1874 Mar 31, 2026 +12
Oh, someone tell that clerk that allegedly changed the language of the bill that they are now the Senate.
12
buzzsawjoe Mar 31, 2026 +6
Sorry I don't have time to read all the comments right now; maybe somebody already said this? 1 percent compounded monthly isn't 12 percent per year.
6
mfknnayyyy Mar 31, 2026 +2
If I'm understanding it correctly, it would equate to 12.86% annually if interest is compounded monthly. Simple interest would leave it at 12% annually.
2
StruggleBoy1999 Mar 31, 2026 +5
The entire government is compromised of "criminal acts" god forbid they try to pass something actually helpful to the people.

Republican Vetos bill that would mean those affected by a huge storm would pay less to the companies profiting from the storm. Wants Affected victims to pay 12 times what they would under the vetoed bill to the companies profiting from the storm.
3
Strangewhine88 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Too bad the people that bought themselves a Governor Tater are even dumber than he is. I’m sure there’s a work around for Oxford McMansion owners either way.

So basically either Reeves is to ignorant to realize 1% a month is 12% a year, OR more than likely THAT is what he wanted. No republican't cares about anyone's hardship, all they care about is MONEY.
