Everyone knew this was coming.  Russia's plan is to destabilize surrounding countries, bolster fervent, and try to install russian-friendly governments. And Moldova is a prime target as they already have a controlled region and further control means encirclement for Ukraine.

I think we're pretty much at the start of WWIII now. Early stages maybe, but it's here.

It's sort of like how Japan Invaded China in the mid 30's but people only consider the war starting in 1939.

It'll be interesting years from now to hear discussions of when it actually started. Ukraine invasion? Iran attacked? Venezuela head of state captured? When you have so much to choose from then you're definitely in world war territory.

It's so fucked, and it bothers me how no politicians are taking the situation seriously. Declaration of war for ww3 will be made on twitter. Declaration of war for ww4 will be drawn in clay.

It will likely be similar to WW2 with multiple dates depending where you are. The historian debate answer will be the Russian invasion of Crimea (the Japan invasion of China analog). The standard European answer will be Russia invasion of Crimea (Germany invaded Poland). The US answer will be Iran invasion with Israel likely using October 7th.

Ukraine invasion...which we then funded and supplied Ukraine so that we were not fighting the Russians directly. Remove Syria from the game. Remove Venezuela from the game. Attempt to remove Iran from the game. Probably remove Cuba soon. China then takes a gamble on taking Taiwan. Question will the USA and EU countries have built enough of a stockpile of weapons and ammunition before China attempts to take Taiwan, and Russia invades the baltics?

I think that's actually far from certain at the moment but at the same time it wouldn't be all that surprising if it works out that way, or at least escalates much further from today's position. It's a bit of a weird setup though, with no clear A/B sides. russia and Europe would clearly be on opposing sides, but russia is already seriously depleted and is heading towards being a semi-puppet of China. Iran is obviously a shit, and although the rest of the middle east seems to at least lean towards Israel, patience there seems to be thinning with both Israel and Iran. There's a good chance of China invading Taiwan, but I don't think China has any appetite for wider war with Europe or anyone else. India, Pakistan, etc. always has the potential to kick off on a larger scale. Africa seems to have constant war, but nothing that likely spills outside of Africa. The US is a wildcard. Technically they're in NATO, but have also threatened invasion of two NATO countries (plus a load of non-NATO countries). They're allegedly allied with Europe, but are being puppeted from russia while also constantly bickering with russia's own puppeteer. So who knows what side they'd be on, if any, or if it would be the US vs everyone else.

One of my history professors theorized back in the 00's that it would be hard to define the actual start of a World War III because it would likely be a mixture of terrorism and appeasement and so far he seems to be right

That has been the consensus for a few years now. World wars don't start overnight, they're a ramp-up over time.

I’d go for the opposite: towards the end of the Long Cold War. The Ukraine War exposed Russia as a paper tiger. China doesn’t have the ability to project it’s power yet. The US is fed up with the multinational institutions it needed in that war. It’s picking off Russia’s allies one at a time.

So if that's the case.. why would the US alienate all its close allies like trump did? I rather think it's a ego thing without much strategic plan. He can so he does- and trump apparently will face no consequences for whatever misery he is producing.

Because hes a narcissistic moron who gets his beliefs from fox news, it isn't more complicated than that, its why he keeps talking all that "they need us more than we need them". The entire world is moving away from america as a trading partner because they've now shown they're unreliable.

Doesn’t need them, they don’t need it? It doesn’t need European Allies to hold Russia in check on the continent and they don’t need it, they can manage that. With Russia weaker than expected balance of power shifts and you want to tie Europe up a bit dealing with Russia rather than giving us an easy life because then the US can act more in it’s own direct interest because Europe is too busy with Russia. Your camp mate is outside fighting a bear, he’ll win, but in the meantime you can look at his secret stash of p**** mags and eat all the chocolate. It’s certainly about ego but more in how things happen not what. The President of the United States has options not free rein because that’s just the way leadership works? You can’t really *force* other human beings to do anything ultimately. You get paths of higher and lower resistance. That’s why the broad sweep of Trump’s foreign policy in terms of what actually happens rather than is talked about isn’t *that* different to anything Biden or Obama did. The speed is different, there’s more violence around it but the direction is broadly similar.
