TIL it can be impossible to find the manufacturer info for private label eye drops. I’m looking at the packaging for the stuff I got at Target and can’t find anything. Even the NDC info on the FDA’s website doesn’t have it.
172
cobalthex Apr 4, 2026 +38
recall information will have it however
38
ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 4, 2026 +554
This is why when it comes to eye stuff…buy name brand. This isn’t the first time nor will it be the last.
554
No-Tomatillo-7566 Apr 4, 2026 +265
My eye specialist told me to avoid Visine. Said it was actually [harmful.So](http://harmful.So) that's one name product to avoid.
265
misfitx Apr 4, 2026 +195
Systane preservative free is my favorite.
195
BobMortimersButthole Apr 4, 2026 +48
This is what my eye specialist recommends.
48
ShibaVagina Apr 4, 2026 +36
Yeah, my eyes are fucked and I have to buy these. The preservatives mess with your eye healing itself. They're expensive as hell though.
36
ComtesseCrumpet Apr 6, 2026 +4
Systane and a heated eye mask to get blocked ducts flowing again have pretty much unfucked my eyes.
4
Nethersworn1 Apr 5, 2026 +9
Genteal is good too
9
Interjessing-Salary Apr 5, 2026 +7
Systane is like heaven in eye drops for my eyes. I occasionally have to use them and every time it's sweet bliss putting them in.
7
ltmikepowell Apr 6, 2026 +1
Also Refresh PF works really well for me. I often get the 100 vials pack from Costco.
1
ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 4, 2026 +56
Yes Visine is dogshit. Actually like not good for your eyes.
56
Robotboogeyman Apr 4, 2026 +37
My perception of visine has nothing to do w health, just keeping your eyes from being super red while stoned.
37
OutToBeatTheFrey Apr 5, 2026 +10
Lumify and keep the drops cold.
10
shrub5 Apr 5, 2026 +1
Lumify is fantastic. Worked like a charm for me for about 2-3 years. Then, out of nowhere my eyes started getting super red and the lumify drops didn’t seem to help at all. I went to a specialist and they told me that I likely had developed an allergy to the lumify drops themselves. Despite saying that he too recommends them to patients, that “around 1-10 people will randomly develop an allergy to lumify at some point, and we don’t know why. Just use lubricating drops and use some other redness relief drops very sparingly when needed, like for a wedding or interview or something.” Sure enough, I stopped using them and the redness calmed down. But oh man do I miss being able to get completely stoned and still feel comfortable in public, because weed makes my eyes RED.
1
Good_vibe_good_life Apr 5, 2026 +9
I like Rhoto, expensive but works better.
9
YourMomsTunnelTour Apr 5, 2026 +6
The red Rhotos are my lifelong favorite.
6
saladmunch2 Apr 6, 2026 +2
Same. The gf hated them because it was like putting menthol in your eye but I liked it about them lol. Refreshing.
2
SpiderDijonJr Apr 4, 2026 +1
Been using it consistently for 20 years and my eyes still work pretty darn good.
1
rando1459 Apr 4, 2026 +8
If your eyes work pretty darn good, what do you use Visine for?
8
I_like_Mashroms Apr 4, 2026 +20
Red eyes....from... Allergies?
20
Disastrous_Room_927 Apr 5, 2026 +4
I have allergies right now.
4
adolfojp Apr 5, 2026 +21
Visine is harmful because many of their formulations include vasoconstrictors and antihistamines which can cause problems when taken long term. It's like taking Benadryl or Afrin every day. But try telling that to my brother. He's unfazed by terms like rebound hyperemia and his eyes keep getting worse.
21
wutfacer Apr 5, 2026 +17
A lot of people take antihistamines every day (environmental allergies, pet allergies, etc)
17
Harp-Note Apr 5, 2026 +2
Yep. I've been on cetirizine for years at this point. For chronic rashes. :(
2
pivovy Apr 5, 2026 +6
Yeah, definitely don't take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every day. I have sleep problems, ended up taking it for quite a few months every night, and got super fat. Took forever to lose that weight. Still working on it.
6
adolfojp Apr 5, 2026 +8
Prolonged use has also been linked to dementia. It’s criminal that they don’t put that on the label. (Maybe try glycine powder. It works miracles for me.)
8
chrysophilist Apr 5, 2026
Hot take: diphenhydramine should not be over-the-counter given its side effect profile, dangers of routine use, and potential for toxicity. That shit should be prescription-only. Same for acetaminophen while I'm on my pedestal, and I'm not the first to say it.
0
sleepymoose88 Apr 6, 2026 +3
Wait, Benadryl has a weight gain side effect? My primary care a couple years ago told me to start taking it daily alongside my Zyrtec when my allergies got really bad. My weight has ballooned over the last couple years with no real change in my physical activity or diet. I’m pretty routine and eat the same stuff for breakfast and lunch every day and we cycle through the same 20 low cal lean meat dinners all the time, minus holidays. I thought I was just getting old and my metabolism or testosterone was dropping off.
3
pivovy Apr 7, 2026 +2
Yeah, definitely. From my experience at least. It's slow, but you'll def gain some, it was the same way with me without any changes to diet or activity. Then I read somewhere that people gain 10% of their weight, and I slowly stopped. Quitting was pretty unpleasant but not too hard.
2
sleepymoose88 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Yeah it’s been slow and gradual. 185 to 205 over the last 2.5 years. Slow enough to make me think I just gained a bit of weight over the winter or did some emotional eating, but it’s been damn near impossible to shed. I looked into it more and even Zyrtec/its generic are to a lesser extent correlated with weight gain even as a phase 2 antihistamine. The phase 2 ones were designed to not go through the blood brain barrier but Zyrtec still sorta does, so I’m stopping Zyrtec as well. If things get bad allergy wise, I’ll switch to Allegra generic which is the only one that does not cross the blood brain barrier at all.

Care to elaborate?
1
NibittyShibbitz Apr 5, 2026 +1
My sister scolded me for using Visine. Also for nasal spray. It's not good for regular use, but I only ever used either very occasionally. My eyes stay dry and irritated a lot now that I am older and only ever use lubricating drops. I need to check what I have against the recall lists.

WalletFullOfSausage Apr 4, 2026 +87
That’s why it’s Rohto only for me. Damn it burns good.

"It's like dropping menthol into your eye but you will feel like your eyes have been power washed" - how it was described to me and it was spot on. That being said I did get the one with menthol in it.
29
JiffSmoothest Apr 4, 2026 +30
Rohto gang, stand up. I recall my first application with fondness, and burning.
30
Good_vibe_good_life Apr 5, 2026 +1
If you get the red one it doesn’t burn…
1
theboywthagreenscarf Apr 4, 2026 +17
The burning tells you it’s working
17
Smokes_LetsGo876 Apr 4, 2026 +35
Fuckin rohto man. Me and my friends ALWAYS had a bottle back in high school. Absolute best drops to get rid of red eyes from smoking weed.

I don't know what brand I used a few years ago but it made the whites of my eyes unnaturally white. Still red around the eyelids, which made me look even crazier lol

Rohto Z Pro! is the only way to go
1
KimJongFunk Apr 4, 2026 +47
This is so true. I have dry eyes and I have to vigilant about which brands I use because there have been so many recalls over the years. I prefer the single use drops because they haven’t been affected by recalls as much. The recalls mostly seem to affect multi-use bottles.
47
gospdrcr000 Apr 4, 2026 +19
Idk if rohto is the best, but I like them the most.
19
Loo-Hoo-Zuh-Er Apr 4, 2026 +11
Opcon-A has been my friend since I was a teen. Dog allergies and dryness after a shower make my eyes so itchy. That stuff immediately cures it.
11
FuckeenGuy Apr 6, 2026 +2
I love opcon-A. Use them all the time, bc my eyes really enjoy being itchy I guess. Those eyedrops are the only ones to knock it out every time
2
Contemplating_Prison Apr 4, 2026 +43
Bauch and Lamb had some fucked up contact solution like a decade ago. FYI most generic brands are made in the same factories as the generic
43
So_spoke_the_wizard Apr 4, 2026 +4
Two decades ago. Yes, they fucked up the development of Moisture Lock. They have had many new solutions that were developed after the lessons of that mistake. And you know the FDA was all over every new product after that.
4
RichtofensDuckButter Apr 4, 2026 +20
I will never use anything other than Refresh brand.
20
CreepingCoins Apr 4, 2026 +13
This was recommended to me by the person who did my LASIK and I'm still using it 20 years later. I mean, not the same bottle, obviously.
13
Levarien Apr 5, 2026 +2
Same. Ophthalmologist recommended them after diagnosing me with Epithelial Corneal Dystrophy. I pretty much carry them with me daily in case i start to feel the dryness or itchiness coming on.
2
GTdspDude Apr 4, 2026 +26
Single use saline drops, preservative free - yes the packaging is worse for the environment, no I don’t give a shit it’s my eyes
26
Tasty-Traffic-680 Apr 5, 2026 +2
They're like mini mondo squeezers
2
pricklysiren Apr 4, 2026
This is the way

mav194 Apr 4, 2026 +5
Agree to the highest degree. You only got one pair of eyes, and you can't repair em. Saving $4 is not worth all the risk (even if low) it can bring.
5
getdatwontonsoup Apr 4, 2026 +11
They’re all the same product in the factory, the label is added after the fact. There is no difference for some generic and name brand
11
RaisinDetre Apr 4, 2026 +7
Then why does this box of Cheese-Ums crackers taste like shit?
7
getdatwontonsoup Apr 4, 2026 +1
keyword “some”
1
medisherphol Apr 4, 2026 +1
and what you makes think eye drops are different than Cheese-Ums? The name brand tastes the same as the store the brand?
1
babblelol Apr 4, 2026 +1
I was wondering why my eye drops were orange.
1
Iohet Apr 4, 2026 +1
Fewer production lines would lead to some difference compared to cheese c****** snacks
1
medisherphol Apr 4, 2026 -1
Come on. You're just grasping at straws.
-1
yautjaisforlovers Apr 4, 2026 +6
I’ve never looked at the statistics but I feel like name brand is recalled far less often. I buy my drops from Costco and regularly check on them.
6
Every-Development398 Apr 4, 2026 +2
Yeah, funny enough this is not the first time a recall has happened as well.
2
xbleeple Apr 4, 2026 +4
Eye drops was where I finally snapped on the “generics are the same” BS. I got a bottle of generic, super strength, once a day pataday from Target and I had to put more in under 12 hours later bc my eyes were itching again. That just does not happen when I buy the brand name.
4
hextanerf Apr 4, 2026 +7
My physician for allergy told me that there are 1% and 2% variants. Could it be you bought the 1%.
7
xbleeple Apr 4, 2026 +3
Twice a day is the .1%, once a day is the .2%, extra strength is .7%. I even double checked to see if I’d accidentally grabbed the wrong kind, it just *did not* work the same
3
ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 4, 2026 -7
Generics legally have to be the same STUFF in the bottle. Same formulation. Buttttt they can sometimes be slightly off or slightly less well manufactured. Certain generic meds for example can say like “100mg” but can be actually like 95mg. Like some pills will be ever so off. Usually not an issue for most people, but for some, even that small difference can be sensitive. Whereas name brand will be 100% identical every single time. Every pill in the bottle always made in the same exact location, sourced from the same manufacturer.
-7
wutfacer Apr 5, 2026 +2
That's not how regulations for generics work, at least in the US
2
Wasting_my_own_time Apr 4, 2026
None of that is factually accurate. Good day Sir.

The Trump years are going to haunt us for generations due to all this deregulation
181
zelman Apr 4, 2026 +51
While that is true, it is unrelated to this story. There are drug recalls every few weeks for many years. -a pharmacist who has to check stock for recalled stuff often.

What do you think causes manufacturing quality issues?? Deregulation. It’s the whole basis of capitalism for these huge corporations- they’ll do everything possible to save a buck and will just take a slap in the wrist fine for it after.

Why don’t you link something that proves your point? The person you are talking with has no concrete evidence, but you don’t either, so you can’t just say “you have to prove your point with evidence otherwise I’m right by default!”

Brother there is not a specific piece of legislation for every business that does this. There were sweeping moves towards deregulation starting during Trump’s first presidency and we feel the effects now because that shit takes time to show consequences.

Work in eye care. Buy systane, refresh or theratears. Preservative free if you can afford the added expense.
2
Brilliant1965 Apr 5, 2026 +3
I buy name brand, either Ivizia, Refresh or Systane because of all of the recalls and problems with eye drops

I literally bought a bottle of eyedrops a couple of hours ago for my son. It wasn’t these brands but now I’m paranoid.
