Another person who everything I know about them, I've learned against my will. Can y'all (whoever keeps making people like this famous) stop putting trash on pedestals, please?

Right, but then how are they going to get clicks?
141
tyme 3 days ago +67
They get clicks because people choose to click. I know people who watch these kinds of shows. More than one has openly admitted they watch them because it makes them feel better about themselves. It’s a poor, and often detrimental, replacement for therapy.

Does this person know that all reality tv is scripted? As in, the “actors” are told how to act, just not precisely what to say. And, everything is edited after the fact to fit the producers’ narrative du jour.

Yes. They don’t care.

I think the real reasoning behind programming like this is to condition the public to be content with living a mediocre, unfulfilling lives. People see stuff like this and some think, "well my life doesn't seem so bad now", when in fact it is.
17
tyme 3 days ago +25
I’m more inclined to think the content creators realized people liked this kinda stuff, and started pumping it out. It’s not some grand conspiracy to keep us docile, it’s just content creators reactor to trends - as they’ve always done.

It's this because of schadenfreud. I think you're both right, though not so much in the planning to dumb down society. It happens and then it's exploited. Imo. A lot of people need therapy, but this is more often on par with watching a scary movie when you're emotionally numbed out due to intense stress or depression. That's also something I do. When I'm so spent emotionally and need a distraction, I usually go for a psychological thriller or horror movie. It's more common than people think. There's nothing wrong with it, so long as it's not be used as avoidance, or keeping you in a unhealthy mindset. If it's nothing more than a way to distract and recharge, then they ok and people shouldn't be made to feel like their less than for it. Or, that if you do this on occasion it means you're in denial of needing therapy. 🙄

True. This isn't some new thing either. I've been making similar comments since the days of Phil Donahue.

flamepanther 3 days ago
It can be both. The CIA has funded art, for instance. They don't tell the artists what to make, but they do choose what to fund. As for TV, I'm sure the shareholders playing Monopoly with the major media companies mostly want to make money, but I'm also sure they have opinions about the kind of messaging they want to promote.

Right, and thus, it generates 'clicks' which generates revenue. That's why it's done.

For real. I left Utah because I was tired of the Mormon religion dominating everything there. I still can't escape hearing about them because all these weird-ass reality shows keep fetishizing a terrible, patriarchal cult.

Reminds me of one of my all time favorite bumper stickers - *Stop making stupid people famous* Wise words that if heeded, would have created a wildly different world than the one we have now where a senile old racist bombs people to distract from the fact that he raped children.

Society went down this path 25 years ago when it decided watching sleazy reality shows was sufficient entertainment worthy of their time. Humans can be very simple creatures.
6
thecalmingcollection 3 days ago +14
Humans used to watch gladiators fight to death. We’ve never been that evolved.
14
TheModWhoShaggedMe 3 days ago +2
True, being natural followers and lame is not a recent phenomenon. Sadly, we have so many improved options *from reality stank* for entertainment at our fingertips compared to civilizations past and people still choose the base content.
2
MentalSky_ 3 days ago +1
Gladiators died and became less relevant. You didn't have to deal with them for 20 years

You're assuming that it's people upvoting this slop and pushing it to everyone's feeds; AI/bots are always contributing towards promoting current "show/movie/tiktok trend/YouTube shorts/wtv the f***" if it means getting our corporate overlords even a penny more per click or view.

My husband actually asked me about this woman today like he thought I would have all the tea 😭 I might follow tradwives but the ones I follow are definitely not this insane
0
StrangeCharmQuark 3 days ago +12
They’re barely tradwives, too. I was interested because I wanted to see some petty church lady drama, like ooh Dorene didn’t bring a side to Betsy’s potluck” but nah it’s just the same old trash as Real Housewives but everyone’s pretending to be better than everyone else
12
WhateverYouSay1084 3 days ago -1
Yeah I prefer the ones who actually think they're tradwives and don't just fake it for the cameras, like Jill Rodrigues and her myriad offspring. Also Paul and Morgan Olliges who are truly having a moment online.

I once had a wet dream, on the top bunk of a 6 bed train car, during a 12 hour ride across China, and had to sneak down to the bathroom to throw away my undies. Now you’ve learned something about me against your will.

I honestly don't know how you can consider a reality tv person put on a pedestal. Their entire claim to fame is being so outrageous it's entertaining to watch them live their life.
0
73maxwell 3 days ago
It’s not a pedestal, SLoMW is great because it’s breathtaking in the same way as a dumpster fire or train wreck. It’s absolute garbage but I love it. It’s the equivalent of eating a FatShack sandwich. There’s no part of it that’s good for me but I can enjoy it when I want something trashy.
0
wartopuk 3 days ago +1
You should never want anything trashy. You don't enjoy it when you want something trashy, you just have bad taste. People need to stop with this 'guilty pleasure' mentality and own their poor decisions and taste.

They're the least-Mormon Mormons I've ever seen. Why the Church of Latter Day Saints hasn't excommunicated several of them already is mind-boggling.
72

Because the church benefits from Mormonism being in the mainstream

Most of these people aren't even LDS, they're various different flavors of FLDS, so the church excommunicating then wouldn't really mean anything, but it's not like they do that much in the first place.
-4
fightingfish18 3 days ago +15
This is not an FLDS one you're thinking of Sister Wives. Most of the girls on this show are openly talking about being non practicing or leaving the church

From what I've seen, few mormon wives should have unsupervised visitation. They all seem a bit off.
157
Fair_Blood3176 3 days ago +110
Most if not all of these Mormon wives are NOT devout Mormons. Otherwise they wouldn't be wearing the stuff those women wear because they're secret underwear would be showing. That's a big no no. This show is a form of "white washing" for Mormonism. edit: NOT devout* sorry
110
chamullerousa 3 days ago +27
“White washing”? More like “trash canning”. Who would want to be affiliated with these sleazy abusive people on this show?
27
Fair_Blood3176 3 days ago +30
It's an attempt to "normalize" outsiders view of Mormonism with the rest of society. To make it seem like Mormonsim isn't as serious of an organization than it really is. IMO at least.🤷‍♂️
30
chamullerousa 3 days ago +8
Nothing about the people on the show is normal and no Mormon wants any affiliation with them or their behavior.
8
murrtrip 3 days ago -3
lol- it’s not an attempt at anything. They aren’t “saying” anything with this garbage. They just discovered these women are like a lot of other reality Tv stars and will do anything for attention. That means money. Full stop.

It's kind of a culture war in SLC. You're either super Mormon or super anti-Mormon. It's becoming less and less Mormon over time. Outside Salt Lake County though, I agree with you.

She’s an abusive spouse. She’s been Convicted and recent videos show her throwing a chair, that made contact with the kid. She should have lost custody rights well before this. Hell I think the record of Domestic violence was known before she even appeared or Mormon wives, and even was a plot point

SavathunTechQuestion 3 days ago +6
Yes and she was scheduled to be this season's Bachelorette (full season filmed and everything) before video became public of her throwing furniture at her ex-partner with their child in the room. So that season is canceled and ABC network is out a bunch of money, which is schadenfreude considering that the show does background checks before picking the star that would have revealed information about this incident from 2023. https://www.npr.org/2026/03/20/nx-s1-5754587/bachelorette-canceled-taylor-frankie-paul-mormon-wives
