I'm not convinced there is even a legitimate defense. Their only reason for being at MLG seemed to be to regain his favor and negotiate to avoid being spoken about by him. They capitulated until their viewership declined and the heads at MSNBC said, "Okay, no more changing the approach, bring back the Trump snark." Honestly, we probably wouldn't have known about this meeting at all if it hadn't been leaked on social media or mentioned by Trump himself before it was discussed on air, imo. Nothing to defend. When you are a journalist you maintain your credibility via professional distance. Go to Mar A Lago if there is a story to be told. There was no story. It was a humiliation ritual, where he scared them into capitulating, then ensured they had to get on air to explain this sudden shift on Trump. Humiliation, just like Romney forced to have dinner with Trump during his 2016 cabinets discussion, hoping to be Secretary of State, but ending up being nothing.
