We see British actors playing "Standard American" all the time, but it usually falls apart the second they have to do a specific zip code. A lot of the time "Southern" just becomes a generic drawl, or "New York" becomes a cartoonish mobster voice.
However, some of them absolutely nail the nuance. Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown (that Delco accent is notoriously impossible) and Christian Bale in The Fighter come to mind. Idris Elba - the Wire had me fooled.
I didn’t know Damien Lewis was British from watching Band of Brothers

No, they didn't. Even considering the difference between the white and Black Baltimore affectations, neither were pitch perfect. Idris did a better job, but it sounded more like he was from a NYC borough than Baltimore.

Walton Goggins on the first time he met Herriman:
>"So I agree to do Justified. I get on a plane, I connect through Detroit on the way to Pittsburgh, and as I’m making my way from one gate to another a guy comes up to me with this heavy Aussie accent. He says, “Are you Walton?” And I said, “Yeah, yeah.” And he said, “I’m Damon Herriman.” And I said, “Well nice to meet you Damon.” Then he said, “I’m playing Dewey,” and I thought, no, man! No! They have an Aussie, this gentrified, polished, world-traveled Aussie playing Dewey Crowe? Are you kidding me? No! And I had all these fears and insecurities from that conversation. And then the first words came out of his mouth in that read-through and it was like, Oh. My. God. That guy is brilliant. In a million years I wouldn’t have seen it. And he killed it. Gotta disagree, so many actors go too hard on the "oohs and aahs" of the Midwest accent. It always comes off plucky and like a parody. Like, yeah it's there but it's a little bit more subdued. Almost sing songy, whereas when actors do it it comes out too emphasized and always pulls me right out of the performance.

As a non-American both Frances McDormand and William H Macy from the original movie sounded pretty spot on to me.
I knew a guy from Lethbridge, Alberta who sounded almost exactly like the Deputy in Fargo.

Daniel Craig is pretty good at multiple versions of the U.S. southern accent. He’s got the Knives Out accent, which is different from what he used in Logan Lucky. I’m pretty sure a lot of that movie was set in WV, and he did a decent job with the accent

Do Kiwis count? Melanie Lynskey does an incredible American accent! She's one of the only actors doing an American accent who can say the word "anything" the same way we do. My tell with British (or Aussie etc) actors is that word. They usually say "eh-neh-theng" rather than "eh-nee-theeng".

Ian McShane, Deadwood and American Gods. Guy nails it.
And I have to say Andrew Lincoln from The Walking Dead, Rick.
I recently saw a show with him called Coldwater and it was really weird and good and he plays the literal opposite of Rick. That dude is VERY British lol.
So many awesome actors are British and we don't even know. Mel Gibson was the first actor I found out wasn't American, and I was gobsmacked. I just didn't think they could do that lol
EDIT: Forgot Gary Oldman as Drexel in True Romance. Not only did he play and American, he played a white American that thought he was black lol

It's based on foote, but is a cartoonish version. I've read that it was intentionally over the top. This is Foote: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nS7ekJUwWuA.
Craig... I dunno, changes the pitch too widely sometimes? Doesn't quite hit what syllables to drag for how long? It just sounds like a caricature. Which works for the movie, but it's not right.

Cold Mountain is an interesting litmus test for this. Story is set in NC but accents are all over the place. Far and away the best is Jude Law. Donald Sutherland is doing Charleston, Renee Zellweger is doing Texas, not sure what the f*** Philip Seymour Hoffman is doing (easily his worst performance notwithstanding his opioid Katniss sequel).
Also, Kate Winslet in Mare of Eastown and the women in Task: Alison Oliver (Irish), Emilia Jones (British).

I’m gonna zag and say Brits have a tougher time doing the so-called “generic” accent than going hyper specific.
