Montreal local here. The title of this post isn’t entirely clear/somewhat misleading. The accident was back in 2022, the driver responsible for the crash fled Canada, was extradited, and plead guilty this week. F*** this guy.

He fled Canada to India and later somehow entered the US and then extradited straight back to Canada.

Indians literally treat countries immigration like a video game. Its so tiring for other countries that are trying to do it the correct way.

It's been weird watching this change, I used to think once upon a time that someone driving "off" must be day drinking, now it's shifted to "they're on their phone" the amount of people I see swerving all over just to catch a glimpse of them and see they're watching TikTok videos or other nonsense while driving on the freeway is mind blowing....

Drinking and driving Texting and driving F*** all on their cellphone and driving

Toomanyeastereggs 1 day ago +132
Here it’s treated almost as bad as drink driving. The fines are penalties are massive and they are rolling out AI cameras to catch people doing it. It barely makes a dint.

I remember when mythbusters tested out the mechanics of drunk and text driving, and found the texters were even worse because the drunks still had their eyes on the road more.

Yeah, I personally feel it's more dangerous. At least you have SOME reaction time vs none.

Oh man the yell that same line almost everyday except the word you donkey at the end. I could almost guess correctly 90% of the time as I'm approaching them from behind. They either driving 15-20 below limit or can't seem to pick a lane.

BarnacleMcBarndoor 1 day ago +43
Driving down i75 two days ago. I watched a truck pulling a large camper (probably 30ft), and while we rode along side him he was looking down at his phone more than he was looking at the road. I would say he was probably looking down for 15 seconds and up for 2. In those 13 seconds, that full size truck and 30 foot camper could absolutely be devastating to someone’s life, all because the dude couldn’t be bothered to do talk to text or wait until he’s parked to play Angry Birds. I think if you’re caught texting and driving, the first offense is $300 fine. Second is $1000 fine and you lose your license for 1 month. 3rd offense is $2000 file, lose license for 6 months, mandatory driver’s ed, and retesting for license. It’s THAT bad out there; I can’t be a passenger because it allows me to look around, witness other drivers and become disgusted with the people I share the road.

I worry that this will happen a lot more in the coming years. Once the iPad kids start driving, its going to be a lot more scary to drive.
69
CheesyPZ-Crust 1 day ago +12
Well the iPad kids haven't crashed their vehicles into buildings 4 times in less than a year in my small town, unlike the elderly drivers who somehow keep doing that... Phones are 100% another additional potential distraction for driving, but repeating the age old cycle of "new generation is dumb in comparison to mine" is such a dense comment. I drive for work at my job and anecdotally the demographic I most often see on their phones while in traffic are the adults. Bonus points if it's an SUV or truck
12
legit_doom_scroller 1 day ago +31
Bad news: the iPad kids *are* driving. Good news: they’re actually better at controlling their device addictions than their parents.

16
Kronzor_ 1 day ago +126
100%. Distracted driving is the next generations drunk driving. The views on it are exactly the same. Tons of millennials use their phones while driving with the justification that they always used their phones while driving and they're good at it. It wasn't illegal then so we're not going to change now.
126

I was at a job orientation at a veteran’s home in early 2000s where we were in a conference room with the head administrator giving a talk and I watched a young woman spend the entire time texting on her little flip phone. She was looking directly at the administrator resting her head in one hand and her other hand was under the conference table texting, while occasionally glancing at the response for a split second
19

3
Kronzor_ 1 day ago +28
Exactly. And I'm 42, and I heard the exact same about drinking and driving. My generation (mostly) never drank and drove, but we used the f*** out of our phones. And many still do.

Im 32 and grew up in the middle of butt f*** no where Alberta. My generation def drank and drove down backroads n shit. Grad party was held on some dudes farm and the entire backroad was just a line of parked cars. Cops posted up waiting for people to leave and caught soooooo many people drunk and trying to leave..

“Your Grandpa would drive me and your uncle to the bar and make us sit outside so we could drive him home” Wtf Grandpa, they were 12 lol
19
Aciuaciu 1 day ago +5
I had forgotten all about this--My Grandpa made my mother drive when she was 12 and he was intoxicated. Mom drove into the front of a hardware store and obliterated every trash can, garden tool, and bag of manure on display in front. The tank of a car was unscathed. Thank you for this!
5
8fenristhewolf8 1 day ago +11
I mean, I'm actually kind of surprised Grandpa even bothered with DDs. From talking to my own dad, it was way more likely they would just drive home drunk.
11
Substantial_Policy60 1 day ago +7
My dad would have road beers like every time he drove too. How many times he’d get pulled over and they’d just dump it out and let us on our way. It took yeeeears and him finally getting into an accident hitting another vehicle after hitting black ice before he finally got a DUI..
7
Kronzor_ 1 day ago +5
I mean go to a golf club now. Every over 50 just drives home still.
5
Kronzor_ 1 day ago +3
We mostly did. Just the old boys that always did it kept doing it. I'm in my early 40s and (mostly) no one in my peer group ever drank and drove. But we all used out phones.
3
SolSparrow 1 day ago +2
Also road design allows it more in North America. In the EU most driving is around roundabouts not sitting at lights long enough to get bored and want to scroll. Same on highways, the super-straight design is killer for attention and increases boredom and fatigue.
2
GMGarry_Chess 1 day ago +3
the views on it are actually much different. people are very strongly against drunk driving, but people are on their phones while driving everywhere all the time. even cops do it.
3
Kronzor_ 1 day ago +5
The views today yeah. But the views in the 70s and 80s were like they are today on distracted driving. Everyone was drunk driving. Probably even the cops. I used to hear stories from old boys that if a cop pulled you over and you were too drunk to drive, he'd follow you home so you'd get there safely.
5
legit_doom_scroller 1 day ago +2
Hahaha I know it. Remember those videos of people being interviewed who were pissed off they couldn’t drink a beer on the way home? Look it up. Hilarious.

2
Duketogo133 1 day ago +2
Yeah never said it isn't an issue. Just that it's no longer my first thought once I see someone driving really wildly, and it feels much more normalized.
2
WreakingHavoc640 1 day ago +2
And a big part of the issue is that there are no real penalties for doing this. Start suspending people’s licenses for a year at a time, fining them heavily, *and* making them pay to take safe driving courses/classes. No mercy, no second chances. Follow through with every person and no exceptions. Guarantee more people will start putting their phones down when they drive.

In a world with CarPlay/android auto, Bluetooth (either integrated or a standalone device), and ai voice assistants, there’s absolutely no reason to be fidgeting with a phone while driving unless you’re a f*** face idiot. And as someone who has to work in the insurance industry, it’s these same people who 1) raise premiums for *everybody* and 2) complain the most about insurance prices. Like, my bad bro; I know you want to pay $40 a month, but you have 3 at fault wrecks, 4 tickets, and need an SR-22. F*** off my phone

I have a high screentime. That said, when I’m driving, the phone’s hidden in the center armrest cubby. When anyone messages, either I’m hearing through the voice assistant, or it is waiting until I’m parked somewhere safe. The only time my phone is being used the same time as I’m driving is when my wife is using it for something.
20
HyruleSmash855 16 hr ago +1
Same thing. I have an older car so if the drive is long enough I have a external CarPlay display I put up for those drives so my phone, same thing is under the armrest in the center of the front of the car. Off and away so you don’t think about it is a good approach

91
Syrairc 1 day ago +33
It's treated nearly as bad or worse than a DUI in much of Canada. In my province for example, first offense is an instant roadside 3 day license suspension on top of fines and demerits on your license. Unfortunately it's very hard to get caught as a commercial truck driver - cops can't really see what you're doing up high.

They need to start monitoring truck drivers and permanently revoking CDL’s for shit like this. Absolutely unacceptable. I don’t care how much time you spend on the road, I don’t get to f*** off on my phone while I’m working, do your job and pay attention. We had a local family absolutely destroyed by a dump truck driver who was f****** off on his phone and rear ended them at 55mph while they were stopped at a f****** light. Smashed all the children in the back of the mini van and the mother driving lived but was trapped and all she could do was scream for her children who were crushed in the back. Lock that driver away for life.

"Key Distinctions murder vs manslaughter: Foreseeability Level: Manslaughter involves a substantial risk of death, while Second-Degree Murder often involves a grave and highly probable risk. Subjective Mindset: A court will look at whether the accused actually knew their actions would likely kill someone, or if they were merely incredibly careless. Reduction: A murder charge can be reduced to manslaughter if there was "sudden provocation" (heat of passion) or if the actor was too intoxicated to form the intent to kill. In summary, when death is very foreseeable, the line between murder and manslaughter is often drawn by whether the court believes the accused was simply extremely reckless (manslaughter) or wantonly indifferent to human life (murder). " I don't know about anyone else, but I'm thinking it's entirely foreseeable that taking your eyes off the road for periods longer than a second when driving a large transfer truck at highway speeds, is quite likely to cause death. It smacks entirely of IDGAF.

Murder requires intent to kill.
5

That’s not entirely true. There’s a legitimate argument here that the accused knew operating that vehicle while distracted could lead to this outcome so 2nd degree murder could apply.

Road traffic accidents kill many thousands of people every year. There are all sorts of reasons for it. The best solutions we have are mandatory safety improvements in vehicle design and driver controls. Seatbelts, airbags, antilock brakes, crumple zones, these save lives. The next step needs to be with controls. LIDAR sensors. Automatic braking. Steering assists. Road vehicles need to be made as close to idiot proof as possible because as it is, you can be the best driver in the world and an idiot can still kill you on the road. And this is doubly true for commercial vehicles. With the technology available right now we could be doing a lot more. I feel like the race to 'self driving' vehicles has distracted from the much more achievable and much more practical goal of 'a vehicle that won't let you crash'.

it's literally a deadly weapon... any infraction/accident should be treated as such. but then, look how we've made a "gun" so ~~blaze~~ BLASÉ to own/use... we're fkd.

A phone can tell if you’ve had a wreck but can’t detect if you’re driving. Phones need to be smart enough to see if you’re driving and disable everything except voice calling.

Girl today was merging on the freeway with cellphone in one hand and Dunkin’ Donuts big ass iced coffee in the other. I’ve seen people on FaceTime while sitting on the damn freeway. When the phone integrates with the car via Bluetooth, the car should disable all games, all FaceTime, all social media. You get to make calls and use the map, that’s it.

Yes. Also some car manufacturers are downright criminal for allowing videos and other shit to show up while driving.  I have a Dacia and while it is a c**** car even for some dumbass reason they decided to allow pop ups that show up while driving with Google maps. It is really distracting enough already to cause a crash (e.g. when you want to close the pop up by sliding it), dunno how people are oblivious enough to read text messages and shit while driving.

I’m scared to read the article. Every time I hear about these crashes it always involves an Indian man hardly able to drive. Not trying to come off as racist or anything.

“Hours later that evening, he flew to India after buying his ticket at 3:37 p.m.” Mmmhmm

In the US trucking used to be a good paying union job with benefits. Then the unions got destroyed and trucking became a gig job. Then it got outsourced to Indians. Never seemed to me there was a shortage of truckers - the companies just didn’t want to hire enough truckers. Then the companies fired truckers for not making impossible deadlines, then told the US govt they needed H2B visa holders to come here and do the job - so they could blackmail immigrants into overworking for little pay. My husband takes Ubers and was telling me about his last driver from Pakistan and how nice he was. I said, “Why Pakistan? They’re are a bazillion locals who want to drive people around for money in the summer when the 1% come here, get drunk and need a designated driver.” Our son even wanted to do it on summer weekends. My husband told me the guy drives here in summer and in Boston (hundreds of miles away)during the rest of the year. Like, what? Now they’re importing Uber drivers to hop around the country when locals are readily available? How does that even happen? Who sponsors migrating uber drivers for H2B visas?Uber considers drivers to be ”contractors.” They’re spinsoring H2B “contractors“ who move city to city?

This [study](https://archive.unews.utah.edu/news_releases/drivers-on-cell-phones-are-as-bad-as-drunks/) shows cellphones and driving should not mix

These are the actions of addicts. Phone addiction shouldn’t be underestimated.

My fear isn’t dying due to a terrorist attack, it’s dying because someone is on their iphone while driving.

I was just thinking the other day how it seems like I never see any of those "using your phone in the car is illegal" ads or even hear it on the radio. Of course I thought about this after seeing someone sit at a green light for 20 seconds until they got honked at. Do cops not pull people over for that anymore? I remember it was a huge thing like 10 years ago
