Movies about narcissistic abuse

Posted by havefaith2641

anyone have any movie suggestions that depict narcissistic/verbally and emotionally abusive boyfriends or husbands? if the victim is a mom/single mom, that would be ideal. I don't think anything like this exists. I did just see gaslit by my husband though, so anything but that? if not, any movies that show the toxic levels and progression of what verbal/emotional abuse can have..id really appreciate it!

The Invisible Man is a movie that actually gave me flashbacks lol!  It just hit too close to home of what narcissistic abuse feels like. The isolating, the gaslighting, the way they get people to turn on you, and like the invisible man they can’t see the narcissist for why they are. It’s a painful experience when you’ve lived through this

Not a movie, a miniseries. But Maid.

Not exactly what you're asking for, but the movie Companion depicts abuse accurately, in my opinion.

Precious does parental abuse. Tough movie to watch.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Lady Bird depicts narcissistic abuse between parent/child

God damn, if that’s narcissistic abuse, I grew up in an insane asylum. Not saying it’s not but mine was so much worse.

This one doesn't meet your male abuser criteria, but it's the most famous and delicious of its type: Mommie Dearest edit typo

Looking things up, briefly, it looks like Gaslight fits your criteria. A couple others that might work, The Saxon Charm, Sleeping with the Enemy, and There Will Be Blood

I second Sleeping With the Enemy. Reminds me of my first husband.

The Invisible Man (2020) is actually a terrifying portrayal of exactly this type of man. It is a horror movie, but I think any movie about this type of abuse is generally horrofying.

It’s an old one and may not have aged well ( I might rewatch to confirm) but Sleeping With The Enemy starring Julia Roberts was a memorable portrayal of a woman escaping her husbands malignant narcissistic abuse.

Cable Guy does narcissistic manipulation and behavior well.

The original movie with Ingrid Bergman in it was called gaslight, where the term comes from. Also an old Julia Roberts movie, Sleeping with the Enemy, he is very controlling, eg. the angle the towels are hung on the rail etc, but not sure if there's gaslighting.

Not fully a fit but worth considering: Swimming with Sharks from ‘94. Described as: > Guy (Frank Whaley) is a young film executive who's willing to do whatever it takes to make it in Hollywood. He begins working for famed producer Buddy Ackerman (Kevin Spacey), a domineering, manipulative, coldhearted boss. When Guy also finds out that his cynical girlfriend, Dawn (Michelle Forbes), has been using sex as a career move, he reaches his limit. Guy decides to exact revenge on Buddy by kidnapping him and subjecting him to cruel and unusual punishment.

Fair Play might count. I’m not sure if he’s a textbook narcissist bc there’s underlying misogyny/gender relations stuff at play. But the male mc reminded me of someone I know irl who I’m pretty sure is a legitimate narcissist.

Someone here mentioned the series Maid which I think is the closest portrayal of something like this that I have personally seen. The main character's entire family system is toxic and narcissistic.  While it doesn't 100% fit your criteria, I also love the movie Red Rocket, about a former p*** star with a narcissistic personality. It is somewhat of a comedy, but also has a serious tone. It's a great portrayal because the man so clearly schemes and uses those around him to survive, including a young woman who is not even yet 18. (Obviously it isn't condoning that, but that is common among those with this disorder). It's a good story about a man who lacks any shame.

If you want a more modern take, The Invisible Man is very much about coercive control and manipulation.
