Movies like ”Almost famous”, ”The Way way back” and ”Little miss sunshine”?

Posted by Affectionate_Math592

I love those movies, are there more like them? Movies which are pretty lighthearted. I feel like they don’t make movies like that anymore. They all tell about roadtrips, growing up, love, and they have interesting characters. They are all pretty colourful and also tell about USA (but it doesn’t have to be American movie)

Adventureland. And this is an old one but if you like a good coming of age movie, Stand by Me is a classic.

DogMamaLA Apr 2, 2026 +18
OMG I \*\*LOVED\*\* Adventureland. It was a tribute to the 80s :) Stand by Me is also excellent.
18
BattlinBud Apr 2, 2026 +2
But like, in a way where it feels like it was made by people who actually grew up in the 80s. Not, like, the way Ready Player One was "a tribute to the 80s".

Would Chef fit this category? Kind of heavier stuff at the start of the movie, but it is a road trip with a life affirming story.

Absolutely great addition!

Yees I love Chef!

stray1ight Apr 2, 2026 +6
I completely missed this movie when it came out, and weirdly found it through watching Binging with Babish. It instantly became a classic to me for a billion reasons. I'm a divorced single dad; I watch films of cooking/ chef content and love cooking for myself ... nearly everything about this film lands perfectly. Sidenote - I need more Leguizamo in my life overall.
6
SolidDick Apr 2, 2026 +5
I just rewatched Chef recently, it's a really good movie. We all need more Johnny Legs in our lives. Dude brings it 100% every time.

Oh man, check out his spoken word specials. I realize this genre isn't for everyone but my wife I love him and his special blew us away.

I loved The Chef Show that Jon Favreau did with Chef Roy Choi afterwards as well. It's definitely one of the more relaxed cooking shows I've watched.

Some great mentions here but I would also like to add The Station Agent (2003), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), and Captain Fantastic (2016).

I came to suggest Captain Fantastic. Great, somewhat overlooked movie
8

Captain fantastic is excellent and on the note of Vigo mortenson, check out man a walk on the moon
6
MaleficentLettuce Apr 2, 2026 +3
Love Captain Fantastic and it's exactly what the OP is looking for. King of California is great, too, but built around a heist instead of a road trip.

JohnnyJayce Apr 2, 2026 +20
Elizabethtown is a fun watch. Doesn't start as lighthearted, but once Kirsten Dunst enters the screen it's uphill from there. Has all you asked for, road trips, growing up (in a sense), interesting characters and tells you something about small towns and locations of USA. Leap Year is a bit sillier movie, but Amy Adams and Matthew Goode had great chemistry. The road trip happens in UK though, not US.
20
chocolateyflow Apr 2, 2026 +3
I second Elizabethtown. It's a genuinely feel-good movie. Orlando Bloom's acting isn't always great, sometimes it gets a little too cloying, and it feels kind of all over the place structurally. Still, even with flaws, it's hard not to feel better after watching it, at least for me.
3
ThatCaviarIsAGarnish Apr 2, 2026 +2
Lovin' life...lovin' you!
2
JohnnyJayce Apr 2, 2026 +1
Yeah I feel like the movie would be even better with someone else as the lead. I just rewatched the movie couple days ago and in few scenes I kept thinking "Dylan O'Brien would be so good in this scene". That would be impossible though since he's like 15 years younger than Bloom lol. Jake Gyllenhaal would work though.

Almost famous helped me make up my mind and quit my job, sell my car etc and move abroad
16
Haydzo Apr 2, 2026 +17
Yea same with me. John Wick helped me avenge my dead dog and kill with impunity. Moving abroad though, I think that's maybe a stretch too far.
17
Chickenshit_outfit Apr 2, 2026 +1
Not really, it was always in my mind i wanted to do, watching this finally gave me that final push and why not try and go for it. If it didnt work out can always move back home. Been here 24 years now

1
AnnualPerspective108 Apr 2, 2026 +9
Dude that's wild that Almost Famous had that kind of impact on your life decisions. There's something about those coming of age road trip movies that just hits you at the right moment and makes you realize you need to shake things up. I had a similar thing happen with Into the Wild back in college - watched it during finals week when I was stressed about my future and it made me completely rethink what I wanted to do after graduation. Ended up switching majors and taking a completely different career path. Those movies have this way of showing you that life's too short to play it safe all the time
9
LamppostBoy Apr 2, 2026 +1
I must have been too young. I saw it at around 12 or 13, and while my older sister was obsessed, I couldn't see what the big deal was. Maybe if I watched it again, I'd get it, or maybe at 35, I'm too old.
1
ThickGreen Apr 2, 2026 +1
In my opinion, the best ages to watch and rewatch are at around 17 and 24, when you are the same age as the protagonist and again once you are the same age as Kate Hudson’s character.  At 35 you would have perspective of having lived through those ages, and perhaps have experienced unrequited love or disappointment in your heroes that you would be able to relate in a new way.
1
horsenbuggy Apr 2, 2026 +5
Have you read or listened to Cameron Crowe's recent memoir? He tells the real stories from his wild life that inspired that movie. It's called "The Uncool." I highly recommend it if the movie meant that much to you.

Everybody Wants Some!! Dazed And Confused American Graffiti The Last Picture Show (this one is heavier on the drama and more wistful if you will, it's great though and touch on the same themes) Sleepwalk With Me Ghost World Edit: Another new one that came out last year, it's fantastic: [Eephus](https://imdb.com/title/tt28332337/). Such a simple little movie that becomes this profound meditation on life and the human spirit.

Away We Go (2009). It stars Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski as an expecting couple traveling around and deciding where to settle before their child is born. Super full of heart and laughs and no one EVER talks about it!
6
Lonely_Noyaaa Apr 2, 2026 +10
You're right that this flavor of film has become rarer, and part of the reason is structural. Almost Famous and Little Miss Sunshine were mid budget studio or specialty films with adult casts making original stories, and that specific s*** in the market largely collapsed between 2010 and 2020 as studios moved toward franchise films and prestige awards drama. A lot of what would have been those movies now gets made as limited series instead.

OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE!!! A movie that came out at a time when a lot of great movies were being made, and kinda got slept on. Underappreciated film IMO. *How many people named “Drugs” could you possibly be acquainted with, Mr. Dunphy?*

I just watched Apollo 10 1/2 and I think it fits this perfectly. It was the most delightful movie I’ve seen in a while. Nostalgic and coming of age, even though I wasn’t alive during the Apollo 11 mission. It only serves as a backdrop for a family growing up in middle America during this time. I’m going to recommend a little-known film called “The Lucky Ones”, starring Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins, and Michael Peña. It’s a heartfelt road trip movie about three veteran strangers on leave, trying to get home for various reasons. It’s lighthearted and funny, and always makes me feel good. “Everybody wants some !!” Is a good one Same director as dazed and confused “Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) is a coming-of-age comedy film written and directed by Richard Linklater, set in 1980 at a Texas college, following a freshman baseball player as he navigates the party-filled, unsupervised world of his new teammates. The film stars Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, and Glen Powell, and is known for its nostalgic look at college life, focusing on the antics of the baseball team as they prepare for the season. “

I found mumblecore from trying to find more movies like that and most the films in that genre are great and fit the bill. My favorites are Safety not Guaranteed and Paddelton but be forewarned Paddleton is very sad.

This is a deep cut, but Flirting (1991) Features a very young Thandie Newton and Nicole Kidman. It’s a really good film IMO.

Almost Famous is my favorite movie of all time. Another one that reminds me of it is actually Good Will Hunting which just has the run and gun filming style

I always group High Fidelity in with Almost Famous. If you like one you will probably like the other.

Little Miss Sunshine is not that light-hearted though.

Maybe I remember it wrong. I just rememberd it was good. Altough I just watched Children of Men and oh man that movie was dark, depressing and it had like zero colours.. So maybe it was my reference point so everything becomes lighthearted lol. I’m also not native speaker so maybe I don’t understand the meaning of the word fully.

Warm Bodies. It's a Zombie movie with a lot of heart.

I’ve only seen Little Miss Sunshine, so I’ve got two other films to watch. Based on that I’m going with Lady Bird.

Staten Island Summer. Lesser known. Written by Coljn Jost of SNL and has a few SNL folks in the cast.

This feels like it's structured like other posts that got a lot of engagement. Might this be created by a bot owned by listnook? You can't see OP's post/comment history. OP's cake day was a couple years ago but listnook could fake that. It's not a bad question but this is our ecosystem.
