Movies where there’s some kind of a relationship between a mentor and hard-to-reach student. Also could be any stand-in parental type figure to a “lost cause” type of kid. Doesn’t even have to be a kid, just someone who needs guidance in any way (even if they don’t think they need it), which leads up to some kind of cathartic moment with them and the mentor.
Part of me wishes this movie had come out before Good Will Hunting so it would have gotten more acclaim than it did.

The story itself was determined to be absolute bogus, but *The Blind Side* covers that if you look past the real life events and just care about the film take

Two teachers for the price of one!
Now that I think about it, Platoon (1986) also falls into this category…

I saw an Italian film a few years ago called Il Champione (The Champion) which was about a young prodigy soccer player with issues who is given an ultimatum by his club to finish school or lose his contract. They hire him a tutor and the film is largely about their relationship- including the big cathartic moment on both sides.

If you're looking for that specific mentor-student dynamic, 'Finding Forrester' (2000) is often cited as the closest vibe to 'Good Will Hunting'. 'Whiplash' (2014) is another incredible take on that relationship, though much more intense and adversarial. For something more classic, 'Dead Poets Society' (1989) is a must-watch.

Classic "teacher tries to teach the class of no-hopers" story, except the gimmick is the teacher is Donnie Yen playing a burnt out military vet

Crossroads. Ralph Macchio as a classically trained guitarist on the road with an old blues man played by Joe Seneca. Dealings with the devil lead to a blues 'cutting heads' contest with their souls on the line.

It's not the main focus, but Edge of Seventeen with Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson.
