Movies that went under the radar?

Posted by IllRagretThisName

I’m looking for some good films that I might have missed in the last ten years, just because they might have been outshined by some blockbuster and/or other financial or marketing reasons. What would you guys say are good films that flew right under the mainstream radar in the last 10 years? I don’t know if it is just me, but it feels like there are just no quality movies being made anymore. I can’t remember the last time I saw a film and thought “Well, damn.” So, I’m kind of hoping that some lesser known films are out there, or things that mainstream media slept on, that will change my mind. I just turned on “Cold Storage”, which is some horror or the other with Liam Neeson that I never heard of before. Let’s see what disappointment this will bring as I await your responses. Thanks all.

oh and *Watcher* (2022) with Maika Monroe, if you like psychological suspense thrillers. inspired by Rear Window, Rosemary’s Baby, and Charade

My Old Ass on Amazon Prime. Practically no marketing for it at all and the trailers they did show made it look like a low-stakes comedy with Aubrey Plaza. But I watched it and it's freakin' a seriously touching coming-of-age story that feels surprisingly authentic and heartfelt. I thought it was great.

Yes! So good. And I don't think this is a spoiler... the time travel works! You just go along for the ride.

I've recommended Brigsby Bear to everyone I know and I'll do it here again. It's incredible. Also, Freaky Tales was an instant cult classic the minute it came out. So there's another fun one.

I second Freaky Tales - so good!

Such an amazing film. The studio execs did them dirty by adding in a prologue which sort of ruins the experience So to anyone who hasn't seen it yet, do yourself a favor, go in blind and either watch the directors cut or fast forward through the prologue.

Suppose minor, first 5 min of the movie spoiler.... I had a hard time mentally tuning back into the movie when at the start when the base was literally blowing up (or perhaps imploding), she was running down the hallway, banging on people's doors, to alert them that the base was blowing up. The noise from the explosion, the base shaking back and forth and the compromised structure allowing all the water in, would for sure alert anyone more than her banging on a door for 2 seconds would. Absurde.
1
Saritiel Mar 31, 2026 +1
Oh man, I didn't enjoy that one. The premise is cool, but every single time they started to build tension and intrigue there was an imediate action sequence that killed it. It felt like it wanted to be Alien, but the director didn't trust that people wouldn't lose interest if there wasn't an explosion on their screen at least once every 10 minutes.

The Guest from 2014 is criminally underrated - Dan Stevens absolutely kills it as this mysterious dude who shows up at a family's door claiming to know their dead son. It's got this perfect 80s thriller vibe with a modern twist that'll leave you thinking about it for days Also check out Wind River if you haven't yet, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen in this murder mystery set on a Native reservation. Way better than most of the mainstream stuff that came out that year and barely anyone talks about it

IllRagretThisName Mar 31, 2026 +2
Man, am I glad that I posted this topic. Everything about your first paragraph has me already convinced. Including the vibe and twist. Adding Wind River as well. 🙏🏼

The Father (2020). Amazing, but I hardly ever see it on top whatever lists
6

Very true. Also strange that not many good movies came out in 2020 so nothing really overshadowed it.

Everybody's radar is different, but: Confess, Fletch. Cold in July. The Empty Man. The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. Blue Ruin. Vast of Night. Rebel Ridge.
3

I loved the empty man!

Bob Trevino Likes It - 2025 movie that was beautifully written and acted. Very emotional and relatable. Snack Shack - 2024 teen comedy. Very old school style movie, super fun. Wheelman - 2017 Frank Grillo movie where he's a heist driver. Intense and fun.

*Bad Times at the El Royale* *Four Lions* (died laughing, such a great movie, really smart. kind of reminded me of the humor in Spinal Tap) edit: my bad this is 2010 but it’s so good *Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes* (super low-budget time-travel comedy made during quarantine, so good)

Bros opened against Smile and was utterly crushed. The audience for either is obviously very different from the other, but Bros was a genuinely fantastic film that was in theaters for like 11 days and disappeared.
2

I wanted to root for Bros but I got tonal whiplash. A few funny moments but not enough to save the plot.

Maybe this thread should be retitled 'Movies that got sold to streaming' instead Mitchells vs the Machines (Buried by Netflix. SO funny, written by Chris Miller and Phil Lord of Project Hail Mary) Annihilation (sold to Netflix by you-know-who) The Green Knight (sold to Amazon) Booksmart (should have reached Easy-A's level of cult classic) La Chimera (was released same time as Challengers so Josh O'Connor couldn't promote both)
2
Twigling Apr 1, 2026 +1
> Annihilation (sold to Netflix by you-know-who) Ah yes, David Ellison tried to ruin it: *"Due to a poorly received test screening, David Ellison, a financier and producer at Skydance, became concerned that the film was "too intellectual" and "too complicated", and demanded changes to make it appeal to a wider audience, including making Portman's character more sympathetic, and changing the ending. Producer Scott Rudin sided with the director, who did not want to alter the film. Rudin, who had final cut privilege, defended the film and refused to take notes from Ellison."* *"On December 7, 2017, it was announced that, due to the clashes between Rudin and Ellison, and the shift in Paramount's leadership, a deal had been struck allowing Netflix to distribute the film internationally. According to this deal, Paramount would handle the American, Canadian, and Chinese release, while Netflix would begin streaming the film in other territories 17 days later."* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annihilation_(film)#Release

There's still lots of good stuff out there. 2025 had one of the best slate of movies we've seen in a while, several of which I thought were instant classics: Sinners, One Battle, Bugonia, Blue Moon, The Secret Agent, No Other Choice, Weapons, etc. Here's 5 from 2025 that I enjoyed and thought flew under the radar: * Eternity * Rental Family * Good Fortune * Roofman * Predator: Killer of Killers
3
_wtfareperfectplaces Mar 31, 2026 +4
I loved Eternity. Such a great concept.
4
chadowan Mar 31, 2026 +1
Just watched it last night, it's a great concept that's really well executed.

These would be my recommendations of lesser known movies that definitely flew under the radar; - Equilibrium with Christian Bale - Serenity (you'll need to watch the TV show first though, Firefly) - Where to Invade Next (super interesting documentary film) - Pink Panther movies with Steve Martin - Beowulf - District 9 (somewhat more known now but definitely a sleeper hit) - Fracture (panned by critics and IMDB this is honestly such an underrated gem) - Vantage Point (honestly one of the best multiple perspective films I've ever seen) - The Hurt Locker (achieved great success in USA but abroad it was quite the sleeper film) - Wanted (to my knowledge it was a bit of a cinema flop but has now become a cult classic) - Das Boot (due to it being in German it probably is not that well known in English speaking countries) - Miami Vice with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx (for some reason Michael Mann films just never seem to achieve the widespread recognition they deserve) - Collateral with Tom Cruise (another one that wasn't big in cinema but has become a cult classic) - News of the World (a new era of streaming films so many seem to fly under the radar as if you don't have that service you'll never hear about the film) - A Man Called Otto with Tom Hanks (same as above) - Greyhound with Tom Hanks (same as above) - Raya and the Last Dragon (animation films have kind of fallen out with adults but this one is definitely one of the few recent ones adults can still enjoy) - Vice with Christian Bale (Bale is always so great to watch but this one definitely flew under the radar) - Don't Look Up (if you had Netflix you've probably seen it, if you didn't then you might not be aware of it) - The Bucket List (if you've not seen it, it really is a must watch!) - Constantine (quite the controversial film especially in religious regions but a great vastly underrated film if you've not seen it yet!) - Enemy at the Gates (I've yet to meet anyone who has seen it, vastly underrated war film) - Memoirs of a Geisha (honestly this film should have been a clean sweep of award season and should have gained both critical and commercial acclaim and yet it just didn't for some reason. Easily the most underrated film on my entire list) - Johnny English and Reborn (comedies in general just don't make waves like big action blockbusters) - Wasabi with Jean Reno (a film almost no one will have heard of with only 45,000 ratings on IMDB) - Soylent Green (I know you said recent but this is an old classic from 1973 that really more people should watch even still today) - Quigley Down Under (with only 27k ratings on IMDB you'll be shocked how unknown this gem of an Australian western film is with great acting by Tom Selleck) - The Campaign (another comedy that just didn't gain widespread recognition due to the fact it is a comedy) - Monster with Charlize Theron (another one like Memoirs that really should have just swept critics and audiences alike but for some reason didn't land at the time, vastly underrated) - Blood Work (probably one of my all time detective murder mystery films, yet with a meager 50k ratings on IMDB this is completely unheard of film) - Quick and the Dead (a great modern take on the spaghetti western yet completely flew under the radar) - The Highwaymen (great synergy between Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson but because it is a streaming film most people haven't heard of it) - The Creator (panned by critics and audiences alike, this is an underrated sci-fi epic) - The Client (a murder court film that is vastly underrated) - Mutiny on the Bounty (another way beyond your date range, but this 1962 classic has long been forgotten by modern audiences) - Uncle Buck (a feel good family film that most people that probably will not have seen) - The General's Daughter (with only 68k votes this is another great murder investigative film though a very graphic one, viewer discretion definitely advised!) Sorry if the list is long but hopefully some of what you were looking for?

The Silent Night Deadly Night remake (2025) Practically no marketing at all, and it’s definitely no movie of the year, but I thought it was a lot of fun! I mean, I had really low expectations, so that may have helped - but I still liked it.

When Independence Day came out, my mom took me that week to the movies but as the theatre was filled for ID4 she bought tickets for Dragonheart instead and it was a wonderful movie that no one was talking about, I remember a few days later we went back to the movies with my grandma to see ID4 and again it was full and no tickets so we just watched Dragonheart again lol, and my grandma loved it too. But I’ve never met anyone even by accident mentioning that movie. I watched it with my SO and mother in law a few years ago and they both loved it.

Here's the thing: When I see "there are no good movies anymore, now watch me watch this B movie," I strongly suspect that B movies are *all* that person watches. As for movies that actually *are* "under the radar," I listed them in an previous reply. Another way of putting this: Whenever someone says "They don't make good movies anymore," the first thing I would *like* to see is a list of the last 10 movies they *did* see.
